Ben Roethlisberger: yesterday's hero in Pittsburgh
Ravens fans: looking for a little red meat to start the weekend?
If so, you may want to check out the excellant Sports Illustrated cover story on Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's travails by veteran sportswriter Jack McCallum, which you can read here.
The title alone will be like an early Christmas present for Steelers haters: "The Hangover: An NFL Superstar's Repulsive Behavior, the Ultimate Expression of Athletic Entitlement Run Amok, Has Forced Even the Most Diehard Fans to Question Their Team and Their Football Faith -- And Made a Small Town in Georgia Wish He'd Never Paid a Visit."
What's most striking about the piece is how Steelers fans have grown weary of Big Ben's antics after the latest sexual-assault accusation against him, this one by a 20-year-old college student, who says he forced himself upon her in the restroom of a bar in Milledgeville, Ga.
McCallum cites one example after another of Roethlisberger's arrogance, sense of entitlement and demeaning treatment of women in recent years, painting a damning portrait of an out-of-control ego in a superstar quarterback that's been grating on the blue-collar sensibilities of the Steel City for years.
"Cynics will no doubt assume that Roethlisberger can reclaim the city, possibly with a few touchdown passes, perhaps with a strong playoff game, probably with an AFC championship and certainly with a third Lombardi Trophy," McCallum writes. "Sports fans are too fickle, too in the moment, for us not to believe that success wouldn't have them climbing back in the Big Ben bus.
"But make no mistake, this schism between superstar and town is a serious one."
And this is a seriously great read. You won't want to miss it.

Not that I'm defending BR, and not that I blame you for jumping on the story, but you'd be standing on slightly higher moral ground if you hadn't misspelled "excellent" in your second sentence...

The SI article is outstanding and well written history of Ben R's negative behavior and the pattern that is so alarming. If you had holes in what happened this article at si.com will fill in the blanks.

I'm a Steeler fan, and a Rooney fan. Why I respect the Steeler organization is because of the way they handle it. I was a fan of Ben, but not anymore, and I'll stand shoulder to shoulder with many other Steeler fans waving goodbye when they get rid of him, and I'd rather they did, it's the right thing to do. Either way, I will no longer support BR as a Steeler fan as I do not support any other NFL thug who thinks that because he has exceptional skills on the field he can impose his will on those around him. Pittsburgh the city and the team have been good to Ben and he abused that trust and respect. Now it's time for him to go, things will never be the seem between Ben, his team mates and the fans.

Wow. I read the police report and the excellent Pittsburg newspaper reporting about the latest sexual assault charge, and I think the SI article gives Roethlisberger way too much leeway. WTF is up with the anonymously sourced allegations that the accuser was "obsessed" with Roethlisberger? What does that have to do with anything? Her story was consistent with the stories of multiple witnesses. Anyone who looks closely at this story can see that Roethlisberger, at a minimum, sexually assaulted this woman. But due to police misconduct and societal prejudice against women who file this sort of charge he'll never be held legally accountable. Personally, I'm done with the Steelers and I'm done with the NFL. This is the last straw.

I am not sure how spelling relates to morality but poor editing is the norm with this paper. I wish the Sun would fold and the Washington Post would expand its Baltimore sports coverage. But for now if I want to read about the Ravens I am stuck reading this rag.

I am a Steeler fan and BR had a large part to do with us winning two SBs in 4 years. But just like LT, the behavior went too far and I have no qualms about getting rid of him and going with BL until we develop a QB of the future. We are still the Lord of the Rings(6)

BRs behavior started long before he hit Pittsburgh, people have been enabling him all along his path to this moment. Any Jr High coach will tell you, the stars get treated differently by teachers, staff, coaches, team mates girl or boy which ever the case. This didn't just appear out of nowhere, and its not going to go away with words, he needs to do BR version of My Name Is Earl and get that list out and start making amends!

I went to school at Miami with this pig. He was a pretty nice guy back then but showed signs of entitlement, as so many star athletes do. He has now gone completely off the rails and obviously needs psychiatric help. And to Ben: Good God, man, put your face on a diet...it's gigantic, blubbery, and disgusting.

Went to high school with him. He was just like this in high school but everyone covered for him. I knew it would come back to haunt him someday!
