Terps still get no respect
The new AP Top 25 basketball rankings are out. And if you're wondering if Maryland made the list after the great run the Terps have put together recently, the answer is no.
No, check that. The Terps actually did make the list. Only their mention came under the heading "Others receiving votes," where it was noted they received a paltry 57. Which was 55 votes more than Wake Forest, Murray State and Cornell received and 56 more than Clemson tallied, if you're looking for a silver lining here.
A lot of this, of course, has to do with Maryland's RPI ranking, which is only 36. (RPI measures strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule.)
And a lot of it has to do with the perception that the ACC is watered-down league these days.
But Terps fans will look at the teams the AP rates 22-25 -- Texas A&M, Richmond, Baylor and Northern Iowa -- and be convinced Maryland got hosed again. And I'd agree with them.
Gary Williams has railed for years that the Terps get no respect in the national rankings. This latest poll will have him doing another slow burn.
If the Terps beat Clemson Wednesday at Comcast Center and Virginia Tech Saturday in Blacksburg and STILL don't crack the Top 25, look for the top of his head to explode.
That should be some sight, too.

Comments
We don't want the Terps feeling they are a top 25 team just yet...this might be some addition motivation to go really hard Wed and Sat before showdown with the evil empire.

Kevin-
They lost to William and Mary, and, they still are 19-7. 1 other team has 7 losses, and that is Mich St. Every time it looks like MD was about to prove they belong in the top 25 they lost. This was the first time this season they did win the game before the new rankings.
As far as if they win these next 2 games, yes, then they would be in. But.....that ain't happening. They get destroyed on the boards every game it seems, and Clemson will end the home game streak.
In fact, It wouldn't surprise me to see the terps lose out, and fail to make they tourney with a 3-8 record against RPI top 50.

What else is new. Are you kidding me?? Northern Iowa and Richmond over Maryland. Sure MD got blown out by Duke but the favor will be returned at Comcast. Hope the players take this as a slight and use it to close out a very good season.

I agree with you Kevin... however, let them not be ranked and no into the tournament as a #9 or higher seed (as they always do) but this time let them prove their value in the tournament. I don't want them ranked, if a trip to the elite 8 isn't reasonable.

I think that the current team is more talented than any Maryland basketball team since Strawberry and Ebique were seniors and McRae and Mike Jones were juniors in 2006-07. Unfortunately, the team doesn't really have a solid victory over a good team this year. The non-conference losses to Cincinatti, Villanova and Wisconsin, and the loss to Duke have negatively affected the perception of the team. The loss to William & Mary (a decent team) didn't help either. So, the stakes are higher with games against VA Tech and Duke and the ACC tournament coming up. I could see the Terps winding up with somewhere between a 4th seed and an 8th seed in the NCAA's.

Screw the rankings. They are always a joke. I hope Maryland doesn't get ranked the rest of the reular season. That should realy piss Gary off and then he and his Terps get that "us against the world" atitude. That usually translates into big wins.

I just hope the Selection Committee shows the Terps some respect.

I think Terps are playing well now....but their schedule is a problem...no wins against a quality opponent home or away....hopefully either game at VT or home against Duke will change that

Ryan ar you a duke fan? Did Gary beat you as a child?
Terps will lose out? Give me a break. And don't start talking about how they should not be in because of the amount of losses. Gtown has 7 losses including ones to USF and Rutgers and they are ranked 11 and 13 in the polls.
Marylands worse loss was to Cinci who's RPI is 56.

I do think MD belongs in the top 25, but I would be cautious if I was a terps fan. MD is the tale of two teams. The one that plays in Comcast Center and the one that doesn't play in comcast center. The team playing at home can beat anyone but the team playing away from home struggles. The last time I checked, the Terps won't be playing in the comcast center when they are in the tournament. I dont see them going far in the tournament because of the way they play on the road. They might be able to beat VT on the road next weekend, but even then, I don't think you can just throw out the way they have played on the road thus far.

The reason the Terps aren't in the top 25 is because they are a sorry, nothin team.

i've been a fan of the terps since jerry greenspan played on the team. how many of you know who greenspan was? but md hasn't beaten a top 20 team this yr. o.k. maybe fl st was ranked in the top 20 when we beat them. but that's iffy. in a year at this moment there is only one team in the acc ranked in the top 25 and md hasn't had any significant wins what do you expect. those who really know basketball think the acc is a lesser b'ball conference this yr than the big east, big 10 and the big 12. they may even think that so far this yr the atlantic 10 is a better conference.

Ryan, you predicted MD would lose out after the poor 1st half at NC State. You already showed yourself to be very weak at making predictions. Give up! If you're a MD fan, why don't you just pull for the team and enjoy this year's success. What's your problem? You can't just keep making the same prediction until they play their last game. Sooner or later you'll be correct.

I assume when you say "3-8 record vs RPI top 50", you are looking into the future and are not basing it on their current record. Top teams should also be considered for what they have done lately. The Terps have been impressive in 2010 and losing to Duke who is undefeated at home is not shameful. This Terps team is not the same team it was during the first half of the season.
I'm fine with the ranking because it gives them even more motivation. I question it because MD is # 2 in a traditionally strong conference, because 6-7 from the ACC are projected to be NCAA bound, because the Terps worst loss was in HI vs #58 Cincy early in the season, and because during the Big East "down years" they still had multiple teams in the top 25 even though their OOC schedule was weak. Much weaker than MDs is currently.

Ryan,
If you predict a loss every time the Terps play, you are bound to be right every once in a while.
So, congratulations on being right 7 times this year. I'm sure you have some actual facts to back up your prediction of losing outright.
Of course your "it seems" comment really seems to have a lot of seemingly concrete basis.
Nice work, champ.

Georgetown is 18-7, with 3 embarrassing losses to Old Dominon, USFla and crappy Rutgers. I thought losing to a CAA team doomed you to "Others Receiving Votes" territory?
Now, UMD hasn't beaten a highly ranked opponent, but losses came against pretty decent teams. They are 2nd in the ACC this year. That has to be worth something!
and Richmond? Seriously? they have 6 losses and play in the A-10. 80th toughest schedule.
BYU has the 148th toughest schedule. Haven't beaten a ranked opponent.
Northern Iowa has the 122nd toughest schedule, haven't PLAYED a ranked opponent.
How does Va Tech get more love than the Terps? They play the 188th toughest schedule and that INCLUDES ACC play! How do they do that? Is Blacksburg HS JV on their schedule?!?!
The RPI is idiotic, how is Siena one spot behind UMD? They haven't beaten a team in the top 50 and tout the 111th toughest schedule.
Not only do the voters think its cute squeezing mid majors into every orifice of the Big Dance, now they think its cute to squeeze them in the Top 25? Heres to lots of upsets of #5 seeds, Richmond, BYU, N Iowa by real schools...

Look at richmond's record. Both terps and richmond lost to W&M and Wake. Terps other losses to Duke, Villanova, Wisconsin - all Top 15 RPI. Losses to Clemson and Cincinatti, with Cincy RPI in the 50's. Richmond losses to A 10 teams, two with RPIs in the 80s.
The rankings are a joke, and frankly the RPI is a self fulfilling prophecy once the season gets under way. Always happens that the RPI over-values a league like the A 10, so then all those conference victories are over-rated. Terps are 2nd in the ACC, and have been destroying teams.
I like our prospects over the remainder of the season schedule and ACC tourney. Don't worry about the polls. GW will just use this as extra motivation

they shouldn't be concerned about being ranked until just before the ACC tournament. keep plugging. sneak up on them all. maryland basketball was the highlight of espn just a few days ago. not a small feat.

I've never been a fan of the "conspiracy theory angle" but I'm being tested this year with my Terps. Anyone who doesn't think the Terps have earned the right to be ranked in the top 25 can go suck a duke. Why is it so hard to understand that 5-2 is higher than 6-3 when calculating conference standings? Too many times this year I have seen espn and usatoday place them behind other schools when they should have been higher in the standings. For the most part the rankings are BS, but only ranked schools get previews on the sports related websites and better sportcenter coverage. Also our seeding will take a big hit if we're not ranked during selection Sunday. But on the flipside, I hope this obvious slight motivates them to crash the boards and defend with fire and PED-like enthusiasm for the next 10-13 games.
schedule..........4 games
acc tourney......3 games(1st rnd bye)
ncaa.................3-6 games

Hey Kevin,is there a reason you haven't posted my last 3 posts on here? All I've done is call Ryan out based on his previous predictions yet you still let him post on here and have not allowed a single one of mine to appear. What's up with that?Ryan got on another site and blasted the Terps after the loss at Duke and said Maryland would be lucky to finish 8-8 and he would by everybody on the site a drink if they finished with 9 wins.So I call him out and he still posts his nonsense on here and I can't get a post.Something is wrong with that picture.
