Foxworth Raked Over Coals
One more note left over from the Ravens 17-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday:
One of the joys of covering Ravens away games is reading the game stories and columns in the local paper the next day.
Here what Cincinnati Enquirer columnist Paul Daugherty had to say about a certain Ravens cornerback who struggled all afternoon against Bengals wide-out Chad Ochocinco:
"The Bengals have better athletes than Baltimore at a few key spots, namely cornerback and wide receiver. Poor Domonique Foxworth. The Ravens paid him big bucks last February to be a high-functioning cover corner. The man couldn't cover Eight Five with a tarpaulin and a tranquilizer gun. Foxworth fell down twice, just in the first quarter."
Ouch. That has to be the worst hit Foxworth's taken in weeks.

The problem is, it's TRUE!

The other problem is, Carr, Washington, Walker, and Landry are even worse, if that's possible.

Well he's absolutely right , and I live here in Baltimore ,and i'm a big Ravens fan , but our DB'S really suck including Landry , who looks totally lost out on the field and has anyone notice at times that he seeems scared to really hit anyone !

Not only did the Cincinnati paper rip Foxworth but the paper also let everyone know that Ray Lewis was no where to be found in the locker room after the game! He said Benson could not break the 100 yard mark prior to the game and he did not stay around to answer questions after Benson ran for 117 yards for the second time against the little birdies. Another very poor showing by the Ravens. Another classless act by Lewis, could not take the heat and he left the building!

I believe we are over-reacting to generalize that we are completely ineffective on defense. I've been leaving blogs everywhere that there might be a "silver-lining" to yesterdays loss. Welcome Lardius Webb as a starting Corner. He came in when Fabian was injured. Guess what happened? Cincy didn't score another point the entire 2nd half. Yes, Ed Reed's stripping of the ball from 85 helped, but clearly Webb starting as a CB helped tremendously. I understand that Chris Henry was out when he got injured, but up to that point he had only caught 1 pass. So be upset which I completely understand about the exposure our secondary has, but more importantly appreciate the fact that lurking is potentially that shut-down Corner we've wanted since Summer Camp. In case you forgot, his Combine Report reads as such: "Webb ran the fastest 40-yard dash for a cornerback at the 2009 NFL Combine with an official time of a 4.46. Webb also bench pressed 225 pounds 15 times, had a vertical jump of 36.5 inches, and a 20-yard shuttle of 4.1 seconds..." If Harbough is reading this, please start Webb as a Corner on Clevelands' best receiver on Monday night. If he struggles early, take him out for a few plays, coach him up, let him regroup and throw him back in. I am telling you the fact that we are playing Cleveland on MNF, could be just the perfect situation to start him as a CB and watch him roll heads.
17 points to Cincy (all in the 1st half)
0 points in second half to Cincy
7 points to Denver (all game)
Again, I am not playing down the fact that our Secondary is a serious exposure area, but start Webb and then lets reassess afterwards.

Jbud - Really? a classless act by not wanting to talk to the media after getting outplayed? That's a ridiculous statement. Yes, they got beat - even beat bad. But classless? Stop, enough with the misplaced vehemance. He doesn't usually speak to media, even when we win. They seek him out, so he does do some interviews but he rarely speaks immediately after a game. Get off the high horse.

I am disappointed that he did not include our other big bucks bust, Chris Carr. Also, Dwan Landry was supposed to negate the need to resign Jim Leonard, but he too deserves honorable mention. Finally, does anyone know whether the Ravens plan to honor Matt Stover at the Indy game? We were supposed to not miss a beat when he was not invited back. One game from the Super Bowl last year and we decided to develop a new kicker. Now Matt may get to the Super Bowl after all!

Who could disagree with that assessment? I only dread Peyton coming to town. Probably 5 or 6 TD's by air. With Ozzie such a good judge of tallent, how could he be so wrong on Foxwortless and Washington?

The truth really hurts. Foxworhtless has got to be close to the biggest bust in recent memory. I thought McAllister was bad but this guy is horrible. Gotta beleive his Ties with the owner at Maryland had something to do with it. But Hauschka the kicker....talk about taking the wind out of our sails. I did not think we were going to miss Rex, Bart, Chris and Matt this much. Anyway the Cincy columnist is 100 % correct.

Man, what did C-Mac do? I've never actually had to work with the guy but that he isn't back here yet makes me wonder how bad it must have been. He's really that much of a jerk that Harbaugh can't swallow hard and pick up the phone?

To Mr Cowherd, you will be able to save the Sun a lot of money if you would just stay home and check this address out. newsvoyager.com It lists all of the papers in the US. Next time stay home and use this web site. You could have written a story about how Ray Lewis was missing in action after the loss. He could not be found for a comment in the locker room. He was the one that said Benson could not run for another 100 yard game against the Ravens defense, wrong again Ray!
Posted by: Jdub11 | November 9, 2009 3:53 PM
Did you feel the comments are unwarranted? Foxworth is a bum, and as the previous posters mentioned so is everyone else in the secondary excluding Reed. Webb did a commendable job after 31 went down & should start the rest of the season. Never thought I would miss CMac the way I do now.

When the Ravens signed Foxworth, my immediate reaction was "All this money for someone else's nickel back?". Then I thought, " Ozzie knows a lot more about football than I do".
Well, maybe not...

While Foxworth nor the Ravens as a whole had a good game, OchoStinko only had 4 catches for 45 yards. Foxworth did something right after an ugly first half.
Posted by: Dan | November 9, 2009 4:11 PM
I guess it was still the bad calls by the refs that 'allowed' the Bengals to win and Benson to go for 100.

Foxworth looked exactly like he did when he was at Maryland--very poor. I have no idea whet the Ravens saw in him when he was a free agent from Denver. Evidently,Denver is a lot smarter than the Ravens when evaluationg DB's!!!

It seems that many fans are taking the game personal. You folks, do you really know and understand the game. The game is won as a team and no one player makes it so. The offense was off, the defense was off, coaching was off. The analysis from the editor was almost like the ones from the Sun pape-very weird and childlike. I think that Foxworth had a good game. No long balls, no tds thrown in his area, kept receivers close to the side to shield, that is what coverage is about. But of course you guys every week run from one area to another like little kids in a candy store that is so shocked that a store could have so much you don't know what you want. Last week some of you same losers were saying that the secondary was good-tis week you're on your schizo trip. The week before last in MN it was the kicker, the line, the coaches need fired. What's next? Do you really support this team? Oh by the way, no listending to this garbage that we post anyway. I do this to have some fun with a bunch of loser fans. I know the Ravens are going through transition, and it hurts to see them lose when it seems they should win. But if you are not on the field you can't even begin to rationlize what goes on. Did any of you losers play NFL, no, Pop Warne ball? If you did, it is different.

Let him have his fun, the Bengals are only good every 3-5 years, they have to get it all out of their system this year before they go back in the crapper next year

Kevin, you said:

One of my joys is to read your column and to realize that you are going home with another loss to the Bengals under your belt. It kind of leaves a lump in you throat not doesn't it?
Posted by: Jdub11 | November 9, 2009 4:51 PM
we need a cornerback or two, another wide receiver and a kicker that can make a feild goal when he needs to.

ray left the building like
elvis....
ngata holds the run defense
together on the d-line and
ray just mops up the leftovers
about 3-5 yards downfield...
ocho-cinco knows ray too well,
give him some deodorant and
he'll smell up the place every
other sunday.......

Take it easy on Ray Lewis, what do you expect from him? He was extremely disappointed in the defense, and in our team's inability to put pressure on Carson Palmer. Calling it classless is unfair and ridiculous, get out of here.
That being said, I think Ray is being a little hard on himself, and you all are being a little hard on the defense. The fact is, at the end of the day the Bengals only scored 17 points on the Ravens. In the second half the Ravens' D held them to 0, but even if the Bengals had scored another touchdown it wouldn't have been the worst showing we've seen from our defense.
Our offense completely stalled out. They did absolutely nothing the first half. To be honest, I wasn't comfortable with the offense's first half performance against the Broncos either. In this game, however, we didn't see the second half kick we were all hoping for. The offense seems inconsistent, and I think it's up to Harbaugh to figure out why. Take a look at the 4th quarter of the Vikings game, maybe? We need to start figuring out our strengths, and exploiting them, rather than trying to fix our secondary. It's not gonna happen. All we can do is step up the pressure on the opposing QB, and figure out what makes our offense click.

I played the position in my younger years;I think Dom should rethink what he learned in Pop Warner, high school, maybe college teams. Swivel hipping, short joppy steps, keep the legs moving,he does'nt need to make his cuts with the reciever all in one step.Yeh,he needs new shoes, too.Landing on your arse is the ultimate embarrassment for a cover def. back.I know the pro coaches teach taking your eye off the qb and run with the reciever but does he do his homework and game film an opponents routes, tendencies like Cincy did with Flacco and Mason? His salary means nothing to me,EXCEPT, other fans have higher expectations of him because of it.

I think another issue is the step back that the defense has taken overall. They seem to play up and down which is a reflection on the coaching staff. I guess I am spoiled as we have had two the best defensive coaches in all of football now who do we have..?

it won't be long for the Bengals are back in jail.

Lewis ia gutless. Every time I see him I can't believe he is even in the league.
Posted by: bengal9 | November 10, 2009 9:23 AM
They were not wrong in that assessment, he couldn't stay on his damn feet yesterday. Still, I think Washington is worse and he's the one who should be benched for Webb.
Posted by: Marcus | November 11, 2009 12:04 AM
Dom is trying to make his cuts with the reciever all in one step but he's really trying. After watching his butt warming on the ground in Cincy I suggest he stutter step to get to his man instead of relying on his long stride being so tall.Keep the legs moving in smaller steps should result in better breaks to the ball.I hope he considers what I'm suggesting.
