Mike Tomlin hearts the Ravens in '09
[UPDATE: Be sure to vote in our related poll right here.]
According to Pittsburgh newspapers, at the NFL owners meetings, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked who should be favored to win the division next season. He picked the Ravens.
"You have to like Baltimore. They won 11 games last year with a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback. They have a good football team. They have a great defense, they have a quarterback who proved he's their quarterback of the future, he's a guy on the rise. You have to respect that."So my immediate question: What kind of game is Tomlin playing? Don't trust his poker face for a second. The defending Super Bowl champs beat the Ravens three times last season and they'll start next season as division favorites.
His track record as a sports prognosticator isn't too hot. For what it's worth, Tomlin's pick to win the AFC North before last season: the Cleveland Browns.
(Another AFC North coach hasn't swallowed quite as much purple Kool-Aid as Tomlin. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis picked the Steelers: "They're world champions, they're division champions, so they've got to be the team to beat and Baltimore's probably a close second.")

Hey, what do you expect? Tomlin say he guarantees that the Steelers will repeat? Anyway, the Steelers BARELY won each of their three games last season. It could have very easily been Baltimore in the Superbowl, and Tomlin knows that.

Tomlin's a douche!
Posted by: David | March 25, 2009 2:33 PM
At the very least, there is no prohibitive favorite in the division. The Ravens had late leads and chances to win in all three games against the eventual champs.
And depending on the Jay Cutler sweepstakes (which could end up having him in Cleveland given that they already have to young QB's to deal) who knows what is going to happen...

Tomlin's just trying to take the pressure off himself and the Steelers, he's not stupid.

I Agree with David's comment...well said sir........

Tomlin knows that the Ravens are coming strong with the way they handled the Steelers last year . You have to admit that for a few breaks their way and the Ravens would have won all three games against the Steelers and the lack of seasoning on our part hurt their chances . This year with a whole year under his belt , Joe Flacco should eliminate those mistakes and tight games will be in our favor . And it won't hurt to get a franchise wide receiver either in the draft .

I actually already liked Mike Tomlin before this. He makes it a lot harder for me to hate their team. Then again, their D-Bag fans always manage to remind me of why I loathe this team so much.

Ravens = Pathetic Losers

The refs can't help the Steelers two years in a row. They won them their last two superbowls.
Posted by: Shadow | March 25, 2009 3:51 PM
I have to admit: The Steelers beat the Ravens each time they played them. Never in human history has one team beat another three times, yet the loser is somehow proclaimed better than the winner. Especially when that winner won the Super Bowl.
I love Baltimore. But Ravens' fans are the biggest babies. Wah, wah, wah! Call me when you win something...
Posted by: itisme | March 25, 2009 3:52 PM
D-Bag?
What do you got to say about Pittsburgh and its long list of dirty players.
Your star linebacker showed it when he hit a much smaller guy unnecessarily and then sucker-punched him in the head when he was on the ground. (Remember, even the commentator said he should be thrown out of the game.) That was another example of dirty (despicable) play. Is you and your team proud of that?
Who was taught as kids to play like that?
Posted by: Tom Cole | March 25, 2009 3:58 PM
@ Shadow: It has happened in history. According to Derrick Mason on NFL Network, the Titans beat the Jaguars three times.
Anyway, on topic. Honestly, no offense to the Browns or the Bengals, but all this time it seems like it has only been the Ravens and the Steelers competing for the division. I was more than happy with our(Ravens) season last year, and I'm sure we'll have a great, if not better season than last year. Of course, with the Steelers being the champs, that gives the Ravens something to prove, and I believe it will come down to the wire for who wins the division, like last season.

Us David's all agree Tomlin's a douche!!
Posted by: Davids | March 25, 2009 4:09 PM
Marquise, I wrote that. Not shadow.
And re-read all I wrote: "Never in human history has one team beat another three times, YET the loser is somehow proclaimed better than the winner."
Don't read one without the other. People here are trying to accuse the Ravens of being a better team than the one that beat them three times. How does that happen?
Posted by: itisme | March 25, 2009 4:29 PM
You have to appreciate Tomlin. He speaks his mind, unabashedly, and is a helluva coach.
He also knows that combined through 3 matchups, about 1 minute and 20 seconds separated his team from Super Bowl to AFC runner-up -- the overtime period field-goal win, the disputed touchdown with 43 seconds left in Baltimore, and the Polamahu interception return for a TD. Turn either of those plays around, and he's watching the Super Bowl on his 63" plasma, not coaching it.
There's a healthy respect in his tone, not boastful. And I'm sure he's thinking that his luck might not hold out against the Ravens this fall.
Posted by: Tony Armstrong | March 25, 2009 4:39 PM
You Ravens fans cry about everything...the man is giving the Ravens props and you still CONTINUE to cry about the Steelers.
Posted by: Brian | March 25, 2009 4:40 PM
There's ONE main reason the Steeler's won 3 against us and the won the superbowl! Ben Roethlinsbooger! If he wasn't so damn elusive in the pocket, his face would have been sacked in the turf and his recievers wouldn't have #$## forever to get open for him to dump a pass to them for game changing broken plays!
Posted by: Mark | March 25, 2009 4:41 PM
With all due respect to all the Davids, Tomlin is a damn good coach. He coached his team to 3 wins against us and won the Superbowl. Did the ball bounce their way? yes. Tomlin also put his team in a position to win, when the ball DID bounce their way. That's good coaching.
My hope is that one day, we'll be debating over which HOF coach is better: Tomlin or Harbaugh. So far, Harbaugh has shown greatness and I look for the trend to continue. Of course, he's gotta beat Tomlin this year. Beating the Steelers thrice would ice it for me (beating the Colts would be a sign of greatness too :-)
Posted by: SC_Ravens_Fan | March 25, 2009 4:42 PM
1) Obviously, Tomlin's blowing smoke!
The champs are always the favorite until they lose.
2) The back and forth over which team is dirtier has become BORRRRIIINNG!
Both teams have had their moments and, yes, I hate Hines Ward...and wish he were playing for the Ravens.
3) Tomlin has shown himself to be an excellent coach, so far. But remember, we were thinking the same thing about Billick after the Super Bowl win.
4) Steeler fans, don't you have your own blogs?
Posted by: UT Cal | March 25, 2009 5:09 PM
I'm not going to sit here and say that we were better than the Steelers last year. We weren't, plain and simple. We were beaten three times by the better team (albeit by not that much). Tomlin is, and will continue to be a class act (not to mention without Cowher's tendency to spit when he speaks). He's a good coach and a likeable figure (like Harbaugh). Steelers fans are still D-Bags.
Posted by: Mr. Deez | March 25, 2009 5:14 PM
i'm the biggest raven fan ever. and to hear a pittsburgh steeler fan say that he honestly doesnt think that the refs won his tean two super bowls is pathetic in its self. according to me i didnt know hines ward had 4.3 speed when that mysterious pass interference call was made during the super bowl, jus like the mysterious offensive interference in 05 or 06 who cares.
refs= steelers super bowls.
Posted by: guy price(oklahoma) | March 25, 2009 5:18 PM
You're also the Ravens' simplest fan, guy price(oklahoma), if you think that a game, any game, is decided on one play. How many times did the Ravens punt in those games? How many stalled drives??
How many 3rd downs did the Steelers turn into first downs? Yes, it's true, teams actually manage to squeeze in quite a few plays per game. Try watching 4 quarters, and you'll see that there's actually more than one play per game...

You's Davids all are without any class. Anonymous @ 2:53PM has it right: Tomlin's just trying to take the pressure off his team. He's like the coach who talks up each upcoming opponent as the greatest thing since sliced bread, and bemoans his pathetic team's fate to have to face such a powerhouse. Then his team goes out and just waxes the other team.
Posted by: trebort49 | March 25, 2009 6:12 PM
If the Steelers do wind up beating the Ravens next year when they go head to head then it would take all of the starch out of the team and the fans. Can you imagine how it would make everyone feel if they were beaten one more time by them. Tomlins' comments seem to be a setup for what he probably believes to be a big disappointment for The Ravens and the Ravens fans. Everyone knows that the Steelers are the team to beat next year.
Posted by: paranoid | March 25, 2009 6:13 PM
What else do you expect Tomlin , to say?
They did win all 3 contests, but they could have easily lost 2 of those.
I can't stand the Squealers, but I do admire the job that Tomlin has done. He definitely seems to be a players coach and a very good HC ,in general.
Let's see what happens this year.

Tomlin is "The Man" he knows what he is doing - that got him the ring. Pitt versus Baltimore is the best thing in Sports - a true slug-fest - all other games mean nothing. When they play each other its three Super Bowls a season; all other games are side-shows. Too bad they are not in separate conferences. Lets enjoy it while it lasts, and I hope it does.
Posted by: Yorkshire Raven | March 25, 2009 7:06 PM
Our main problem is that our "reward" for finishing second is playing New England and Indy, while Pittsburgh plays Miami and Tennessee
Who would you prefer to play?

Steelers fans in Baltimore and Maryland: You have a great team and a great city. Now go home. If you don't like our football history, our city, and our state, know this: it is as good as yours, and Baltimore didn't win its NFL Championships and Super Bowls with steroids and referees help. You can look it up, many of your storied heroes from the 70s are already dead from steroid abuse. Your storied ownership cut Johnny Unitas, one of your own. Is there a statue of Bradshaw yet at Heinz Field? I think not, that would be as stupid as he is.

haha to all the steeler fans. your coach doens't even believe in your team. i do agree with david. a franchise reciever like calvin johnson and the ravens would be set.

Hey! I am a Raven fan and I hated the Steelers for a long time until last year. They showed that they were a team that deserves respect. They play as hard as the Ravens. They have good defense like the Ravens. And they have a good tenured QB. "Big Ben" is to the Ravens as Elway was to the Browns or Montana to the Bengals. I gotta respect his game play b/c the champions make great plays. He has done that consistently the past 2 years. Thank you Tomlin for the vote of confidence. It is clear that he will use that as motivation to get the Steelers moving forward. I can hear him now saying before the Steeler-Raven game to his guys, "Prove me wrong!"
As long as Tomlin has "Big Ben" and “Dick” LeBeau, they are the favorites. The Ravens must prove that they are just as good. No more lip service. No more trash talking. "Just Win Baby!"

Tomlin knows that R. Lewis disappeared in the second half last year, and will be one year older next season; Bart Scott is Raven's history; and the sophomore jinx awaits Joe F. He's messin' with your heads now that he also knows the Ravens don't want to face him in prime time.
Posted by: Iron CIty | March 25, 2009 9:55 PM
Baltimore fans may be babies but Pittsburgh people have got to be the ugliest people this side of Tucson. Steelers beat the Ravens three times last year, but all of those games were highly contested and one ended on what was widely considered the most controversial play of the year. Not to mention, how many starters did the Ravens have on IR going in to the AFC championship? BTW Go Pirates! Talk about "win something".
Pittsburgh= God's little snot rocket.
Posted by: RavensFanInCali | March 25, 2009 10:15 PM
Listen, the Steelers were better last season because they got the decisions. They got some help from the refs, ignorant players (Johnson), and ignorant plays (Flacco pick6). None of the matters though. Calls went against the Steelers as well. They had ignorant plays and players too. That is football. You go out and play the game. The winner feels great and the loser is sore. Do not act like Steelers fans take the high road when they lose. Nobody does anymore. I defy you to show me any NFL team and there collective fans that lose a game gracefully. It just does not happen.

Posted by: kdog | March 26, 2009 2:39 AM
As a native of Indiana and also a Ravens fan, I can easily say that the Ravens-Steelers rivalry has a more than passing similarity to the Indiana University/Purdue University rivalry.
In the IU/PU rivalry, the fans and members of both teams can respect the other, but deep down, the fans and members of both teams HATE each other - and it's not just one sport, it's every sport: baseball, basketball, football, soccer, wrestling, tennis, golf, track and field, etc., etc.
Yes, respect and hatred can go hand in hand.
I respect the Steelers, but I still hate them. I don't expect it, but you wouldn't see any tears from me if the Steelers suffered five or more consecutive years at the bottom of the AFC standings, starting next year.
Posted by: Critter69 | March 26, 2009 3:05 AM
Here is my problem. Why are we talking about that other team in the AFC North. I don't care about the other teams coaches, players, fans. I care about the Ravens. So let's stop talking about them and focus on the Ravens! Why talk about something you hate isn't it better to talk about what you like? Lets talk about the draft, Matt Birk, Ray Lewis anything Ravens and nothing else that is AFC North because I don't give a rats a$$ about the rest.
Posted by: Andy | March 26, 2009 7:42 AM
I think it's a smart move. Most if not all pre-season predictions are wrong. So if he's wrong on this one, and the Steelers win the division, it's good for him.
Plus, it's a motivator for his team to not sit back. To know that your coach thinks your division rival is a team to watch should keep them going all the way to December.
Posted by: John | March 26, 2009 8:44 AM
why doesn't he just come out and say that he's intimidated by the Ravens, they got lucky in all three games last year (lucky field goal, lucky TD, and another lucky TD). They take advantage of a rookie quarterback and I'm supposed to be impressed by that? They've had a horseshoe up their buts all last year and Tomlin knows it. Every call went their way and now they realize that won't be the case next year.
Posted by: Steve Ravens365 | March 26, 2009 9:54 AM
Well said Critter! The city of Baltimore and Pitt are very much alike just like their football teams. If you look in the mirror do you hate what you see?
Posted by: George Samryk | March 26, 2009 10:08 AM
Steve Ravens365, you're the biggest baby in this room. "Lucky field goal, lucky TD, and another lucky TD". Take advantage of a rookie QB? Think the Ravens ever did that? Think the Ravens ever benefitted from a questionable call? At least some of them are man enough to say that a game never comes down to one play. Unlike yourself...
Posted by: ItIsMe | March 26, 2009 10:34 AM
I do not have ANY PROBLEM with Tomlin's comments. It makes logical sense. I can only assume that MAESE wrote his dribble when coming from one of his "EDGAR ALLEN POE" favorite trips.
Posted by: jj thomas | March 26, 2009 10:53 AM
The Raven's have been way too inconsistent this decade. Every other year they alternate between winning and losing records. If this trend continues there is no way they will win the division. Maybe in 2010?
Posted by: Tony | March 26, 2009 10:58 AM
I wish my name was David so we can keep this douche bag thing going. It's hard to respect the steelers when their fans are classless d-bags. Is the NFL not a business where teams can move, so how can u fault the fans. We have history too, like the greatest game ever played. For some reason the NFL allowed Our history to pack up in a mayflower truck and the rest is history. And why the h*#! u douche bags on our blog site.
Posted by: von | March 26, 2009 11:29 AM
I am a David and think other ones are the D-bags.
Wow, you fans need to really stop trying to blame the refs every year when you loose. I have zero respect for most of the fans in this town with all of the crying I've heard over the past 8 yrs living here. You guys are 1-4 over the past 2 years and if the Steelers would have played the starters 2 yrs ago would have been 0-5. Three years ago was the only year since you won the Super Bowl that you were even competitive. I guess the refs screwed you every time huh? bunch of babies.
Posted by: David | March 26, 2009 12:11 PM
You guys are stupid because all players play the game dirty if they could get away with it. It's football not powder puff ball. Tomlin is a great coach who doesnt believe in boasting. That's all! Pittsburgh won their last two super bowls because they were the better team, not by penalties. Because penalties were called on them too. Penalties are part of football. So Shadow and all the fag Davids get a life and dont be sore.
Posted by: Ace | March 26, 2009 12:29 PM
The only difference between the two teams last year was that Big Ben was a little better than Flacco, due for sure from experience and possibly (only time will tell) due to talent. The rest of the teams are a wash, both teams with great, tough players. Go back and play last year again, with QBs switched, and the Ravens win. No knock against Flacco. Tomlin is posturing, but he also knows Flacco should close that gap. Ravens though must successfully compensate for loss of Bart Scott to stay with Pitt.
Posted by: Tom in FL | March 26, 2009 12:54 PM
It amazes me that so many football fans are taking time here to express their views, both Raven and Stiller fans. It's March 26th, but I can hardly wait for another Stiller-Raven game, can you? What a great rivalry. I am a Raven fan, 100%, but I'm going to refrain from making negative comments about Pittsburgh, the Stillers, or their fans. I am just going to say that the Ravens had a terrific season last year, NOONE expected them to get to the AFC championship game, and with a little bounce of the ball here and there and a healthier team in 2009, they'll win it all. Remember where you heard it first, and it'll be nice to put the Stillers AND their fans in their place. Can't wait.

I say this as a die-hard Ravens fan, but the Steelers earned the Super Bowl last year. They beat us three times (barely) and then got it done in the playoffs. Sure they got some good calls, but so did the Patriots and so did Jordan all those years. They still won. The tables will be turned soon, and I sure as hell won't give a rip if we win because of a few calls. Winners grab their opportunities. I tip my hats to those sobs.
Posted by: Ravens123 | March 26, 2009 1:43 PM
Yeah this is just Tomlin blowing smoke, he's not a dumb guy he knows the Steelers, right now, are still the favorites for the AFC North. The Ravens have a shot to win the division but still need to have a strong draft before they push the Steelers out of first. They're close but not quite there yet.

Keep in mind that being close to winning games is no where near the same as winning them. A loss is a loss and last time I counted the Baltimore Ravens were 0-3 against the Steelers. Until the Ravens beat the Steelers, quit your trash talking and respect the best.

Congrats to you and your Steelers Mike. You guys beat the Ravens with two suspect penalties. I remember the year before the Ravens beat the Steelers 27-0 both games!! What happened then? Same team right? yup. Good news is that this year will be better than last year. Last year, the Ravens were down both starting DB's, had a rookie QB, rookie coach, a bum line, and did not have big threat wide receiver. This year, we have to shut down corners, with an experienced nickel back. Also the Ravens have experience now with Flacco and Harbaugh, they are in their 2nd season. Bum line is now more experienced and should mature to a solid foundation. Good news for the Steelers is that you still have those yellow towels to wipe the snot out of your nose when our defense bangs up your team!! Can't wait till 2009!!

So if Tomlin says that the Steelers are going to win the division champs and that they are going to crush the Ravens, that's locker room material for the Ravens.
And quite frankly with his analysis of the team, you can't really deny what he said. The Ravens won 11 games last season with a rookie HQ, a young QB on the rise. He basically just pointed out the Ravens played beyond expectations last year and there's no true indication that they will do any worse this upcoming season.
Don't think however that Tomlin doesn't believe the Steelers can win the division however? Think again.
The bottom line is though that Tomlin simply isn't giving the Ravens any locker room material to post up, though I don't think the Ravens need a whole lot more motivation for themselves if they want to get to the superbowl. They know they are going to have to beat Pittsburgh, a team that went 3-0 on them last year, that itself should be some kind of motivation.
All in all it's a new season coming up, everyone is 0-0, let's enjoy the pre-season when it comes and allow the Ravens to focus on their week 1 opponent (it won't be Pittsburgh) when kickoff begins.
Posted by: Tim | March 27, 2009 2:17 PM
Tomlin knows the Ravens are his biggest challenge every year. I don't think any NFL rivalry is uglier or more brutal than Baltimore and pittsburg. Though I Resint the devil out of them beating us 3 times, every single game was close (The first one was thrown away. Thanks Jarret Johnson.) Anyway I know both games will be awesome. And may the Steelers score....nevermore
