Could Michael Vick have worn purple?

In some alternate reality, Brian Billick is still the Ravens head coach and the team went through three quarterbacks last year without finding a long-term solution. (Oddly, also in this bizarro reality: Steelers fans eat salads, Americans drive on the left-hand side of the road and Chinese food is best served smothered in melted cheese.)

So if Joe Flacco never set foot in Owings Mills, if John Harbaugh, Cam Cameron and Hue Jackson never took up office space in The Castle, the big question Ravens fans would be debating these next several months would be: What about Michael Vick?

According to today's Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Vick is planning on returning to the NFL as soon as possible. He has no choice: Vick needs to make mad cash to pay his debts. I don't think those Payday Loans shops will front you money unless you have a job. (According to the AJC story, Vick's planning on earning $10 million a year when he returns to the league. And in unrelated news, I'm planning on taking Scarlett Johansson out for caramels this weekend.)

So let's dip a pretend foot into this pretend reality: Would Vick be worth the risk?

It's a tough question to answer. As the Ravens proved in the real universe last year, the real solution lies with drafting a young quarterback that can stabilize the franchise for years to come. But if that wasn't a draft-day option, I'd have no problem with a team like the Ravens taking a run on a guy like Vick down the road (again, in our alternate reality).

Vick will likely be a free man this summer and he'll likely apply for reinstatement to the NFL before 2010. By then, he'll still be an exciting player. Vick was only 26 when he played his last game; he'd be 30 years old at the start of the 2010 season. Plenty of quarterbacks have posted some of their most successful seasons at age 30 and beyond.

Though the Falcons steadily declined Vick's last couple of seasons, you don't want to attribute that entirely to Vick. His passing yards, in fact, slightly rose over his final three seasons, as did his number of touchdown passes. And don't forget that in 2006 -- the last season before Bad Newz Kennel was boarded up -- Vick rushed for more than 1,000 yards.

He'll make some team better. It's just a matter of a general manager taking a chance and a fan base offering forgiveness.

I'm in the camp that believes sitting in a prison cell is paying one's debt to society. It doesn't mean you have to like him -- you don't have to hire him to babysit your children or walk your miniature schnauzer around the block -- but the NFL need not punish him harsher than the court.

So the question to you: Would you have been willing to cheer Vick in a Ravens jersey?

sadly, yes.

Never! I would either find a new team or stop watching the NFL all together if he was a Raven.

I just don't want the circus atmosphere. I just want Xs and Os talked about. If the Ravens brought Vick in, fans would have to deal with stories about animal rights activists, etc., instead of football. I'd much rather read about Joe Flacco's and Kenny Britt's developing chemistry.

Don't get me wrong. I'm ok with bringing in a circus show if the player bringing it to town is really talented. But with Vick, the talent doesn't offset the circus. I don't care how good he would look in the Wild Cat (which won't work against better teams).

Interesting hypothetical...

Here's another one. Do a story about how Kyle Boller is slinging touchdown passes up and down M&T Bank Stadium. Now there's a #7 we all know and love...

First of all it would be too messy. Plus, I don't want a quarterback that runs for a 1000 yards; running quaterbacks have never had sustained success in the NFL. Steve Young and John Elway won it all only after they learned to get the ball to their playmakers and scramble only when they absolutely had to.

NEVER! Players need to understand that playing in the NFL is NOT a right. As much as they downplay it, they are role models. How insane, 10M/year after sitting in a cell.

His debt to society may be paid (which I don't think it has) but he should NEVER touch a football professionally again.

Sure, I would.

God created us to be masters over the animals. (We rule.)
Don't take this as being acceptable for what Mr. Vick did.

YES. haha but I wouldn't mind if we picked him up in THIS universe. Vick was one of my favorite players before the dogfighting scandal and now that he's payed his debt to society I will root for him again whatever team he's on (assuming the Colts and Squeelers aren't viable options). The only non-Ravens jersey I've ever owned is an away Vick and I still keep it now that it's ungettable.

Of course. Football is football. if you are in purple I'll cheer for you.

I'm not sure where people get off on saying he should never play football again. should all criminals remain unemployed?! He is a criminal that has paid his time and is now trying to rejoin the workforce based on his marketable skills. Whether that be a carpenter or quarterback is really irrelevant.

That wouldn't happen even if we didn't have Flacco. Too many red flags, although he is an elite runner with a strong arm. He is not a passer and his stats began to rise over those three years because of the talent around him got better. Of course his O-line was trash and he was almost always being chased, but even when they did hold up he was an average passer at best. By the time he gets back he may still be fast, but not at his old football speed. This was a nice theory but in reality we've needed a strong arm QB that can throw with accuracy and read defenses. Vick wouldn't even be an option. Not saying he wouldn't be a QB in the NFL, but he may have to come back as a rb/wr. Bottom line is whoever brings him in will probably want the ball in his hands in space where he is most dangerous. He would be a perfect fit for Miami and their consistant wildcat formations.

We all have fallen short of the glory god. He made a mistake..one that has costed him more than just the money.....his self respect. I believe everyone is intitled to a second chance. What's your private sin? Would you like a second chance?

I think it's pretty sad that people jump all over Vick on something they don't understand or know about. Did you know that first time child molesters get less time then Vick? That's how you know we lived in a messed up society when dogs have more value then children. People act liked he killed people. I'm a dog lover and have one of my own, but I'm not a psycho or a tree huger I should say, or PETA fanatic. The guy is a great athlete, one of the best of his time, and you would be an idiot not to want him on your team. Before this incident Vick never had any run ins with the law and was an upstanding guy in his community. Give the man a second chance, this is America right?!

Love him or hate him, Vick is an exciting player to watch.

No Way. He is an average QB at best. And he is a CONVICTED FELON dog murderer.

This is the player I want on my team:

Here's the best part of the article:

"“Grrrrrr” or “Buddy Lee,” as Kelly is affectionately known by his teammates, isn’t afraid of anyone or anything. When he visited me in San Diego in 1999, we ran into the Chargers’ stud running back, Natrone Means, and several of his teammates. As some of the guys walked by our table and said hello, Kelly asked if one of them was Means.

“Yes,” I told him — and the next thing I knew, Kelly was out of his chair chasing after Natrone and his party. He stood nose to nose with Natrone and said, “No disrespect, but when I get in the league, don’t run in my direction because you’ll end up on your back in the backfield, and you’ll be lucky to have a 25-yard game.”

Understandably, Natrone’s teammates bounced in front of Kelly to protect their star player. But Kelly didn’t budge.

“I’m not here to fight, just to make a statement to Mr. Means,” he said. “Now, if you want to fight, I will kick all your asses.” Natrone simply wished Kelly luck and moved on with his crew.

When I incredulously asked Kelly what he was thinking, he replied, “Jack, you don’t understand, but the only thing I know is to compete. It’s hard for me to sit still. I wish I could wrestle and play football 365 days of the year.”

Never! I had been very seriously thinking of selling my PSL's & tickets until last year so NO, NEVER would I have gone to one more game to watch the blind leading the blind. Hell, I have that home all the time. Why would I pay those prices when it is already costing me a song & a dance every day & I already know what's going to happen & what the outcomes going to be.

You gotta remember how bad our QB situation was before Joe Flacco........Now that you remembered the answer is absoluetly YES

It could have happened if the Ravens didn't get Flacco. I would have been against it, even before he was killing doggies I thought he was supremely overrated. Yeah he could be exciting to watch, at times, but I'd actually want a QB who could pass accurately.

I think he should get a second chance but even if Flacco wasn't here I would not want him anywhere near the Ravens.

Back when Billick was the coach and Flacco wasn't the QB (or even drafted?) the thought crossed my mind that this could happen. Why not? Pay your debt, be hated by everyone and help the Ravens sink further into becoming Raiders East . . . but don't you think he'd want too much money for what he actually does (oops--did)? Ozzie would never go for that. And Billick isn't around anymore.

And what kind of moron names their dog fighting compound "Bad Newz Kennel"? I'd choose "Falls Road Center for Canine Training" . . .

Where's Quincy Carter when you need him??

Some of your are on your high horse at the moment. I think a fair number of people would say differently if he were a WR and could earn the Ravens a ring.

Least us Ravens fans forget, Ray Lewis pleaded guilty to OBJ. A fair number of Ravens have had so many run in with the law. Can we have selected Memory?

I would not want Vick simply because he is a run of the mill athlete thinking a strong arm makes them a QB. If the Ravens saw something to bring him in so be it. I would not have been "Holy Roller" bin "I will never watch the Ravens blah, blah, blah..."

Why?

This is a league that consists of people who have done far worse. How many beat women? How many have killed drinking and driving? You still support the teams, the league, do not take a stance now simply for Vick. Do not spite your nose now and be selective. He did his time, paid his debt.

Again, Ozzie has done so many things with aging free agents, you trust his instincts. Even though I highly doubt the Ravens would tinker getting him. I think the events that already un-folded were the last straw. Billick was gone, new blood was coming.

Better Question: What happens if Joe Flacco looks so-so and the team moved up to select Matt Ryan. Would the lack of QB in Atlanta mean all is good between Vick and Blank? Would he be gearing up for another year with the Falcons?

no Thanks.......unless we get Matt Jones and Dante Stallworth with Plaxico as a back-up......for that Vick LOSER........

Vick would have to donate a LOT of money to the Humane Society--we're talking saving the lives of thousands of dogs here--before I could root for him.

But if he tried to do right by man's best friend, I'd root from him from then on.

I trust Ozzie Newsome. If Ozzie thinks it would be a good move, and if Vick was a good player/citizen, I wouldn't invite to dinner or play withmy dogs, but I'd find a way to be OK with it.

It would bring new meaning to Rays pregame statement ."Any dogs in the house?" and I am sure the loud speaker would not play -Who Let The Dogs Out.

Does this team still have K9 ties from Cleveland days. If yes than I can see why he would come here.If not let him go to the DAWG POUND.

YES!!!!

1. He paid his debt to society.
2. In Bizarr-o world we would still be looking for a QB.
3. The rapper T.I. tried to buy untraceable weapons and get a year in jail... almost a year and a half later? George Bush, did... enough said. And Vick is supposed to keep being drug for over 3 years for fighting dogs? There is someone fighting roosters right now in KY!
4. He who hath not sinned... and forgivness!

A writer wrote: Steve Young won only after he learned to get the ball to his playmakers and scramble only when they had to... as an argument why running qb's dont work... didnt Young when the league MVP the first year he was given the opp to play after Montana got injured...?

Sure I'd love to have a person that is capable of DROWNING, BEATING, SHOOTING AND ELECTRICUTING animals....what a great character addition.

WHY NOT!?!?! He's paid his debt to society! I would welcome him here now to back up Flacco. With Vick in our (alternet reality) at the helm, I would love to go to Cleveland every year just to see the mutt fan's responses. Believe it or not, there's a large segment of the population who doesn't even believe he shoulda been arrested for this in the first place! Kill deers or kill dogs, no matter how you do it, is still killing animals. Who cares?

LMAO. Some of yall are funny. ravens fans cant forgive vick. what ray and jamal did was worse. we forgave ray and we forgave jamal. vick was fighting dogs for entertainment. in case yall didnt know, in baltimore city people do it all the time with pitbulls. Im not into personally but my point is vick was scrutinized cause he was a black athlete doing something really stupid. something he should have paid for dearly but not with prison time. people always make negative comments about athletes and how they need to learn that they cant do whatever they want and get away with it. Everybody in this world makes mistakes and vick was someone who has made a very nice career for himself so why try to ruin him by sending him to jail for fighting for animals. Getting in trouble alone was probably enough scare to ensure he would never do it again. look at phelps. no one even hears about him smoking weed anymore. I guess doing drugs isnt as serious. anyway, i like flacco. he always seems extremely calm no matter the situation. He be looking kind of high too sometimes. Hope he not hanging out with Phelps. just joking.
To be honest, I never liked Vick. He was too inconsistant and not an accurate passer. I think his style of play tires out the offensive line cause they have to hold blocks longer in case he runs. I wouldn't want vick here cause we got flacco but if we didnt and we was still going through the quaterback slump we have been having for the majority of the time the ravens have been in existance, than yes i would take vick over boller and the rest of the crew.
ravens fans who live in baltimore heres a reality check for you high and might fans. we live in baltimore which is the murder capital of the world. we shouldnt be proud of that but it is what it is. with that being said we should be a little forgiving of vick. all he did was fight dogs. look what we live in everyday. fighting dogs is a crime i can forgive somebody for. especially if i forgave ray and jamal. some of yall need to stop.

NO.

And I know the Ravens are too classy of an organization to ever sign a person with the character of Michael "Ron Mexico" Vick.

Yes! He's paid his debts; time to get him back on a football field in a Slash role. Although, I would balk at the $10 mil price tag. lol

"TOY DEPARTMENT" this is the final proof that ALL of the media WRITERS (?) of the SUN have less the 3 grey cells and a mentality of less that a 8 month old.

This is not me speaking from a high horse nor am I a "Holy Roller", but I would never support a team that would bring in someone who tortured dogs until they fought to the death; then after they won or lost, personally beat them against concrete, drowned them or electrocuted them to death with no remorse. How can anyone look into the eyes of a dog and think about those actions and still think a few months in the jail would do anything to address that kind of sickness. Vick is a sociopath and I would never want to spend a dime of my money to support someone who could do that. He was only sorry he was caught. If he hadn't been caught he would still be doing the same thing, even now.

I wouldn't let him shine my shoes. He's a POS.

Why would you want him here?
To take Flacco's place? That wouldn't be "bizzaro world"....that'd be like "The Twilight Zone".
Someone will take a chance on him.
It surely won't be us. I'd see places like San Fran, Tampa or Minnesota.
And let's not forget about 'ol Jerry Jones.
If someone loses a starting QB, that could hasten one's decision making process.
What he did was an inhumane thing, in our eyes.
However, they kill ( and yes, torture ) dogs for food in other countries and cultures.
Any NFL teams moving to Asia?

I am not against Vick returning to the NFL but I will not root for him and would cease to root for the ravens if he was our QB.

Sure, he has a right to earn a living regardless of whether that be as a QB or a carpenter... I, although, do not have to root for him.

Vick is an average quarterback, with incredible athletic ability. His career QB rating is in the middle 70s. No way would I cheer for that scumbag. In fact, give me 10 minutes alone with him, and he'll never play again. No way he gets a job in the NFL. No one will take on that PR nightmare for a back up QB. CFL is the only place for him.

If we didn't have Flacco I'd welcome him to the Ravens will open arms, but his salary could be no higher than a million dollars. He's got to prove himself before he earns a average contract.

If he played his last game at 26 most NFL QB's don't even get good at passing till they're that old. Look at Dree Brees it took him that long, San Diego was so convinced he wasn't the quaterback after 3 years they drafted Phillip Rivers. Vick could have still been an amazing QB but 3 years out of the league is to much time to come back as a QB. Pacman Jones was out for a year and he came with no balls. He couldn't return punts like he was known too. He was right under Devin hester when Devin Hester was the real Devin Hester. Vick could have been good but to much time has passed, he should come back as a WR.

Let us know how it goes with Scarlett.

I would cheer for him. It amazes me that he had to go to jail at all for fighting pit bulls who last I checked, are still killing HUMANS!!!!! Wow. Such hypocracy.
