Orioles: Jordan's stock goes up (updated)

It's funny how perceptions can change in a heartbeat. The Orioles remain under legitimate fire from fans and outside observers for their inconsistent player development, and scouting director Joe Jordan has not escaped their wrath. He drafted a lot of good young players, but people tend to point to the clinkers -- like the time the Orioles took Billy Rowell ahead of Tim Lincecum -- when they're venting about the long decline of the organization.

So, if Jordan deserves your scorn, why are the Philadelphia Phillies interested in hiring him as their director of player development? He just interviewed with the Phils and we'll probably hear in the next few days whether he gets offered the job...and accepts.

Instant update: Jordan just confirmed by text message that he has accepted the job with the Phillies. Get Dan Connolly's full story on Joe's departure is right here.

Good luck to Joe Jordan, and even better luck to the Phillies.

Peter-
Here is the thing with Jordan. What good players?
He gets credit for something and I just don't see it.
In nearly 10 years he has YET to draft a single impact player. When you look at all the impact players drafted in the last 8 or 9 drafts.

PLUS, We are consistently drafting in the top 5. How is that possible?

Townsend, Rowell, Hobgood, Snyder, MATUSZ. He took Weiters. The projected #2 overall pick who fell.
Ok. Weiters is a very good defensive catcher, who calls a good game at times, and hit 20 HR.

So, in 9 drafts, he got 1 player, who happened to be the consensus #2 pick that fell to him, basicallly a must take situation. Where not even he can screw it up.

Bon Voyage.

If only the STockstills would get the same call. At least we know the Phillies won't be drafting Hamels, Howards, Rollins, Utley's, etc. anymore.

If you're implying Jordan was good, fair enough, but where are the reports of the real problems within the organization?

I read where Angelos wants to spend on players, and Andy improved the organization by trades and ST facility, and Joe Jordan had success with the draft. What I'm not reading is why we continue to fail. If all these people are good baseball men, is the answer simply a culture of failure? Because all these good people should have at least been able to get the club to 75 wins ths year, or sooner.

I don't know the real reason why people can come through Baltimore and then go elsehwere onto success. We are not 1 SP away from contending, our younger players are underdeveloped, so next year is bleak as well.

Since the Phillies hired Joe Jordan, maybe there are a lot more holes in the org than we know, and Jordan was doing a tremendous job with what he had. And if so, no new GM will ever be able to fix them anytime soon. Just wish I could read what the real problems are with this club, if everyone is all so darned good a what they do.

JORDAN was highly respected by the oriole officials and may succeed further with the phillies talent and scouting.. I personally wish him well but wish our new guy could have had him to choose from..

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
