O's: Tillman's troubles
Chris Tillman's start this afternoon began with such promise. He struck out four of the first six batters he faced and seemed to have a little more pop than the last time we saw him up in the majors. Then he allowed eight hits over the next 2 1/3 innings and left the game with one out in the fifth.
It was a tough assignment, of course, getting called up from Triple-A (where he's been pitching okay) to make a spot start against the Yankees, but Tillman was once considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, and not just by the Orioles scouting staff. It's just not happening.
That said, he's still quite young and I'm still of the opinion that the deal that brought him along with Adam Jones and George Sherrill for Erik Bedard was a great trade.
Now, for the second act of the Orioles minor league shuffle. Zach Britton takes the mound momentarily for the night portion of the day-night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. I'm going to predict that he does better.
Update: Can't remember making a worse prediction than this. I'm going to go back to watching and waiting.

So much for your last prediction Peter. Just another embarrassment. Is it me or does Rick Adair need to be moved out? Since Connor's exit, this pitching staff has gone so far back.

So much for the Britton improvement prediction...this team is just a continued embarrassment. Does anybody wonder why Rick Adair's performance isn't being questioned more? Since Connor's exit this pitching staff is AA caliber at best. So sad...

Well, Peter, that prediction didn't quite pan out. In the wretched, miserable, flop-filled, failure-frenzied, god-awful, beyond embarrassment, shockingly shameless, endlessly agonizing Era of Angelos, Peter the Grate, Asbestos Boy, the Scourge of Camden, it's a precarious proposition to expect anything from this organization but public humiliation. Now let's see if they trade Jeremy Guthrie, their only competent starting piticher, for a couple cans of corn.

" I'm going to predict that he does better."
Peter, i'll give you a mulligan. Try to keep it in the fairway this time.

We need to get yet another pitching coach to work with the young pitchers. We started just a few years ago with great hopes for Britton, Tillman, Berk, Matuz et al . Three pitching coaches later, maybe we can get the fourth coach to change their arm slot, grip, release point, leg drive, and cup size and have some of the best darn single A pitchers in all of baseball. Please explain Schmuck, how one team can hose so many well ranked, well regarded (outside of the organization) prospects in such a short time?

Hey Peter
A little 'off' on that prediction re: Britton!! I was hoping for better;that has to be one of the worst Oriole pitching performances ever. Berken wasn't much better.
In fact, most of the staff has been terrible lately and the time spent in AAA ball by Tillman and Britton didn't seem to help at all. They both seemed to be worse which begs the question-where's the 'arms'?
Tillman is over-hyped and a pounding like Britton took may set him back indefinitely. Matusz has taken huges steps back and while Arietta has 10 wins, he's far from a sure thing. Guthrie can usually give you a solid outing but he's likely gone soon(he probably can't wait to get traded!)
Deep down Buck is seething right now with today's double embarrassing losses and he'll end up packing it in before his contract is up. He didn't know how bad this train wreck of a franchise is and right now, things are only going to get worse.
Buck's 'legacy' will be no better than Trembley, Perlozzo and Hargrove's(you can add others that I've missed)
McPhail has been an absolute failure as a GM and the fact that people like Pete are still mentioning his only decent trade-the Bedard one, speaks volumes about his tenure with the O's. Yes, we 'won' that one but basically it boiled down to Jones for Bedard .
Unfortunately, there have been 5 bad deals for every good one. Most free agents have been busts, with the exception of Hardy/Koji and we are left with guys that are well past their prime and only signed here because no one else wanted them. These players then hope that a contender 'saves' them from the scrap heap-kind of like the lemon that has been sitting in the lot for months!
Anyway, just my periodic rant, brought on by tonight's debacle, which shows front and centre how far this once-proud franchise has sunk. Maybe Buck will start warming up!

Well so much for the return of the young guns. Tillman and Britton combine to give up something like 12 earned runs in 5 innings of work. Can't anybody here play this game!?! High time O's fans broke out the brown paper bags. Either put them over your heads or barf into them because this team makes you sick with embarrassment.

The Orioles line-up in the 7th inning of the second game might be the worst in ML history.

If they trade Lee, MacPhail looks an idiot for signing this guy basically for 4 months for $4.8M. Then again, he looks pretty stupid for signing him for anyway.

Nice prediction.

From an MLB.com article about Derek Holland's shutout today:
"TORONTO -- Derek Holland had a two-run lead with two outs in the second inning, but a walk, an infield hit and his throwing error gave the Blue Jays runners on second and third. That's when manager Ron Washington went to the mound.
"I thought he's going to argue the call ... I didn't think anything of it at first," Holland said. "But he ripped me a new one, that's the best way to put it."
Whatever Washington said had the desired effect. Holland was brilliant from that moment on, pitching his third shutout in his past five games in a 3-0 victory over the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre."
Buck had that fire last year. I haven't seen him even come close to "tearing anyone a new one" this season. He's gone soft and has failed to light any kind of competitive fire under this team like he did last season.

Pete,
With the benefit of hindsight, would you like to change your prediction in the last sentence?
Posted by: Harvey | July 31, 2011 12:58 AM
Amazingly Britton did worse. Still think he will be the better pitcher in the long run though. Hope this doesnt damage his confidence too much

How do that prediction go, oh great Orioles Insider?
Posted by: BeermanColdBeer | July 31, 2011 5:50 AM
Well your prediction certainly didn't come true. 17-3??? Tell me this. Has the pitching coach been tinkering with Britton's mechanics too? Seems since Connors left all the pitchers have gone down hill? What is going on with this?
Posted by: bob | July 31, 2011 7:54 AM
Nice prediction, Pete!

By the time you post this it will be probably be Labor Day and Britton will be getting another call up after getting shelled back to the stone age against the Red Sox and Yankees. I tried to figure out his ERA but my calculator didn't have enough fields. Your run of reverse lock predictions appears to be at an end. But we still love you, wherever you are.

Well, you were a bit off when you predicted Zach was going to have a better outing in the 2nd game. 15-1 when I turned it off. Kogi must be so happy to get out of town.

Pete; I`m writing this on Sunday--needless to say you were just a LEEETLE off with your prediction. All these kids are so young that their upside is endless. The sad thing is there`s nobody to coach em up.These boys have had no consistency with coaching-and its` hurt them. I think that all these kids are talented, and hopefully, with the right coaching they will eventually be successful.

If Tillman was the only highly hyped prospect that has failed to live up to expectations, I wouldn't be too upset. Sadly though he seems to represent the norm instead of an exception. Whether it's because they aren't getting the needed instruction in the minors, or because they just weren't all that talented to begin with, the O's not only don't produce any real stars, but very few legitimate, average quality major league players out of their farm system.
Since they also don't want to spend any money on top quality free agents, it's pretty hard to see any light at the end of this very long dark tunnel.

So much for that prediction, huh,Pete. Was not a big fan of AM before this last round of trading, but could not have predicted the complete and utter collapse of this pitching staff.Sure does make Connor's resigning seem that much more interesting.Wonder what he knew that isn't being told.

Pete, how goes the prediction? Joking.
Posted by: JoeW | July 31, 2011 9:44 PM
Peter, I don't think you be coming back in your next life as a fortune teller! Britton was much worse!
Good trade though...I'm hoping for good things from Davis and Hunter. In fact, I'm praying/begging/the entire 9 yards that they do well for us!
