Orioles: Weekend warriors?
The shroud of fatalism has settled over the Orioles the past couple of weeks has gotten almost suffocating, but everybody who has spent any time watching baseball knows that momentum can shift at any time. The Orioles have been streaky during the first half of this season, so it's fair to assume that they'll have another good streak before too long.
Will it start in Boston? There's no logical reason to think so, but this team has defied any attempt to figure out why it does anything. The O's pitched pretty well during the early weeks of the season, but didn't score a lot of runs. They got the offense in gear for a while in June, but stopped pitching effectively. Even the individual players have been enigmatic -- most notably Mark Reynolds, who has 20 home runs and 20 errors entering the four-game series that starts tonight at Fenway Park.
The pitching staff has struggled badly over the past nine games. The starting rotation has an 8-plus ERA and manager Buck Showalter has had to plug holes in it with Triple-A callups Chris Jakubauskas and Mitch Atkins. The hitters have been absolutely pitiful with runners in scoring position.
Things look so bad that Rick Dempsey just said on the pregame show that tonight is probably the Orioles' best chance to win one more game before the All-Star break, and Rick's a pretty positive guy.
I'm not quite so certain that the O's are overmatched. I think they'll at least split this series, because the Red Sox are having pitching problems of their own and -- though there is no logical basis for this -- the pendulum has to swing back at some point. It always does.
Once again, I'm looking for Nolan Reimold to continue to make a case for more playing time. This is his opportunity to make some kind of statement with Luke Scott on the disabled list. I think he knows that and isn't going to pass it up.
First pitch awaits.

Pete you take your postive attitude to the extremes. How is this team going to turn it around eventually when they now have 3 pitchers in the rotation now that shouldn't even be in the major leagues. I know it must be getting harder by the day to think about what to say but please pete leave the kool aid alone. This team is heading for a down ward spiral like you have never seen.Andy you should be ashamed of yourself for allowing a franchise to get to this point.

Pete's reply: Bob, I didn't say they would eventually turn it around. I said they would have another hot streak. Not a very wild prediction, since every team has one periodically. And, while I'm critiquing your comment, did you really say I'm going to see a downward spiral like I've never seen. Where were you at this time last year, when I saw a downward spiral like I had never seen before.

Pete, I understand trying to be positive, but this is truly a reach. This is a very bad team, and before we know it, it'll again be one of the 3 worst teams in all of baseball. . . . .just like every season.
I know Andy inherited a mess, but wasn't he suppose to be different? Let me ask you, if another gm started next month, wouldn't he be inheriting a mess? Take away the spring training facility, which we had to move anyway, and his four years have been just another disastrous run.
We can't blame things on trembly anymore. As bad as he was a manager, he literally was just the latest scapegoat. Isn't it about time the front office is held accountable for this mess?

Pete's reply: I never did blame Trembley. Everybody knows where the fault lies.

Pete,
Over the years the finger pointing has been pointed at every single person in the Organization. However, there has only been one consistency throughout that whole time. We have read the stories about PA wanting to win so badly and the players saying he is a great owner, but it isn't working. Does he love this team enough to step aside? It sounds like I m picking straws here but how else do you explain this many losing seasons and the way which they do it.

Not overmatched? The Orioles are not overmatched by the Red Sox? The Orioles don't have nearly the offensive power the Sox have even without taking into account that the Red Sox are going to be hitting against Orioles pitching. Now, if the Orioles were hitting against Orioles pitching, it'd be more even.

I give credit to anyone that can still be positive about this franchise at this point. It never will get better, that much is obvious.

pathetic. we are just pathetic. we keep thinking this must be rock bottom. but it isn't. we stay at rock bottom. there's no lower to go. it's just a vast wasteland out there. nothing on the horizon. just more bleakness and darkness.

Pete:
Forgive me for not keeping up with your insights: "everybody knows where the fault lies"
Could you refresh this fan of 45 years (minus the Angelos period) as to where you know the fault lies?
Thanks.

"Everybody knows where the fault lies"? I think this is the closest Mr. Schmuck has come to calling out MacPhail and Angelos, without any equivocation. I love it! After years of laboring to come up with new storylines and positive angles, it must provide at least a little relief to finally call a spade a spade. This organization stinks and it is no more competitive now than when MacPhail took over 4+ years ago. Injuries and bad breaks are part of the game that every team must deal with, not a perpetual excuse for never-ending losing.

Pete, I'm not making the slightest of excuses, but this team has the worst luck. Look at the Pirates...the Jays and Orioles are way more talented, but they're worse than Pittsburgh.
Toronto takes a flyer on a career bench player/utility guy, and he goes on to lead the planet in HR. The O's have made some bad signings, but NONE have ever worked out like that. The Rangers catch lightning in a bottle with Vlad last year, and this year, with Vlad and Lee, the O's catch lightning up the butt.
It just doesn't make sense the things that go wrong with this team, even when they make solid-to-good choices.

An O's fan since '68. When is enough enough? Here we are on our way to the 14th straight losing season. Angelos has destroyed a once-proud organization. It's all about profit for him. Truly a disgrace that our beloved O's are owned by someone so unworthy.

The blame angelos because he won't spend money mantra is old. Fact is, no amount of money is going to get enough quality players here to make a difference. If he only cared about money, he wouldn't have paid $14 million for Lee and Vlad. He's not stupid. He's seen the charts. He knows that he's not going to put butts in the seats with a crappy team on the field.
