O's: Reim time

Nolan Reimold made good on my Orioles Xtra prediction tonight that he would hit a home run against Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia. It's a gift, but it doesn't seem to help me at the craps table.

I'd like to see Reimold start getting some regular playing time. He swung the bat pretty good a couple of years ago before he cut the season short to undergo surgery to repair a damaged Achilles tendon. He never really got untracked last year -- for a variety of reasons -- and was the odd guy out this year after a decent spring.

He didn't respond after he was optioned to Norfolk, but he has had some very good at-bats in his limited role up here. The Orioles owe it to themselves to find out whether he can be an everyday player, because he definitely has major league power.

At this point, the top 4 hitters in the O's lineup are 3 for 16 with no RBI. The bottom 4 hitters are 9 for 15 with 6 RBI. I know the big story tonight is matusz continuing to struggle, but can there be a bigger indictment of the roster MacPhail has put together over the past FOUR years than the stats above? Hey how about this year we think about getting a top-tier free agent to anchor this lineup? What do you think about that, MacPhail?

Well, here's to the 2012 squad...signing off till spring training (as usual).

Make that 4 for 20 and zero RBI from our 1-4 hitters. It is just sad, and the saddest part is that this is all we're ever going to get from MacPhail...

Just more of Buck's curious management decisions....Reimold clearly the young left fielder of the future, yet he sits behind the joke, Luke Scott and Mr. Baseball Felix Pie.....just more of Buck's curious management decisions.

Reimold is an excellent hitter with great plate discipline & hustle. Weiters, Hardy, Reynolds, Jones, Markakis and Reimold are above average to excellent players who can make the Orioles the team of the future. Scott is an adequate DH. Blake Davis looks respectable at 2nd. With more offense from 1st base, these guys are a solid part of our future..

Note Andy traded for four and the other four come from the Orioles farm system.

Don't trade our future for cast offs.

I agree wholeheartly. I thought he was great in 2009 and wanted him to be the Rookie of the Year, then the injury happened. Felt bad for him in 2010. Play Reimold!!!

The Orioles messing around with Reimold of reminds me of another Orioles player that never really got a chance in playing. Not same position (great AAA player, but got pulled alot) was the pitcher Rick Krivda. And maybe even Bergesen now.

I agree completely. Nolan should be our starting left fielder. I just don't get Buck's continued fascination with Pie, and Scott should be on the DL.

I like Buck, but there are 2 things about him that puzzle me greatly
1. What does he see in Robert Andino? He refused to play Ryan Adams at all and just kept running Andino out there day after day. Andino is a utility guy - period.
2. What doesn't he see in Nolan Reimhold? The guy hustles all the time, has some pop and is a better than average outfielder. Put him out there for an extended period and lets find out if he can play.

A few years ago a rookie Nick Markakis had a hot camp and made the opening day roster. He struggled through the first half of that season, battled through it, learned to make the adjustments to major league pitching, and became a very good hitter.

I wish this staff would give Reimold the same chance, because he demonstrated he has potential two years ago and in camp this year, but it's going to take the same patience that Markakis got, but if he is riding the pine most of the time he's never going to break through. He has nothing left to learn in the minors and while I love what Luke Scott has done when he gets hot, we have likely seen his ceiling.

I hope we don't let another good young player get away because we didn't stick with him, like Jayson Werth, John Maine, etc.

What in the world would the Orioles have to lose by playing Reimold in left for 2-3 weeks straight --- it's not they have a great left fielder out there. And it is not like the Orioles are doing anything but playing to reach .500. Buck, you are not now nor will you be at any time this year in a divisional or wild-card race. Make some changes we have all seen enough.

Pete; I don`t get what the O`s are doing. Luke Scott probably won`t be back, and this year - unfortunately like all the other years- should be a testing ground for all players regardless of age.Blake Davis got two hits and made a fine defensive play the other night. Andino was in the lineup the next night against a righty. Let these kids play .What`s the difference between sixty wins or seventy wins. This team reminds me of a scene in- The Natural when the players first get alook at Hobbs. The catcher turns to the pitcher and says another brilliant find by the front office.Unfortunately Garrett Atkins,Derek Lee and Vladimir Geurrero are not Roy Hobbs!!!

Pete - Reimold never got "untracked" last year? See this good piece about [mis]use of that term...which seems to only exist in baseball writing.

Pete's reply: Andy, thanks, but that usage is approved in the Ramdon House Dictionary and, anyway, it's a blog. I'm pretty sure my English professors would have forgiven me either way.

Pete,

I do not understand how a player like Reimold can hit home runs one night and be benched the next. Have you heard from anyone at the Warehouse about the rationale behind this asinine move? I have a feeling there is more to this than righty-lefty match ups. It's not like the rest of the righties in the lineup are lighting it up against righties, or anyone for that matter.

Obviousy Showalter says the PR spin, but doesn't feel the way you do (The Orioles owe it to themselves to find out whether he can be an everyday player)

This anemic offense is unbearable to watch anymore, Scott and Lee need to go, enough already.Play Reimold and Snyder it can't be any worse. Give them 3 months to see what we got.Scott has the biggest hole in his swing I've ever seen yet he plays everyday. I'ts getting impossible to watch anymore!

That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
