More Orioles follies

By most accounts, the Orioles should be about six runs ahead right now. They have banged out 10 hits in five innings against Jason Marquis, but were lucky to score two runs in the fourth inning -- on a terrible play at the plate by Nats catcher Wilson Ramos and an RBI double that was pitcher Zach Britton's first major league hit.

That gave the Orioles a two-run lead, which they were happy to give back an inning later, when an ugly throwing error by Mark Reynolds helped the Nationals turn a modest scoring opportunity into a four-run inning to take the lead.

The Orioles had two runners on and no one out in two other innings, but -- as has become their custom -- did nothing with those opportunities while they waited for the Nationals to mount a comeback.

How do these guys look themselves in the mirror? Or their teammates in the eye?

I'm tired of hearing about effort or how they're "good guys". I make less than ONE PERCENT of what some of these guys do, and if I went in every day and did my job as poorly as them, I'd be so ashamed to show my face. And I'd probably be unemployed. I am a big fan of Buck's, but where's the accountability he was preaching at the end of last season? I've seen no evidence of it this season.

Three straight singles to load the bases and Wieters grounds out on the first pitch. Shocking.

would it really kill weiters to take a strike in that situation??? bases loaded...new pitcher...this after swinging at ball 4 earlier...
man...
This is the worst bases loaded team I have ever seen

3 innings against the Os bullpen and stellar defense may be enough to get the nats a victory

hairston is a 241 hitter

buck may quit this weekend

accardo should be released right after the game. walking a pitcher.
Buck has seen a lot of baseball, but 67 games with this year's version of the Os
might have him on the couch shelling out good money for a weekly pep talk. His money would be better spent on a plane ticket home and away from the disaster.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: You got your wish.

16 hits so far and losing. Another massacre of thirdbasemanship by Reynolds. And, I've seen enough of Accardo thank you very much.

The list of this club's weaknesses is just too long for them to be taken seriously.

I wish Buck would start managing this team by now he should know what he has to do.

I can't watch Gonzalez or Reynolds anymore. I'm sorry Reynolds is not a good 3rd baseman and hurts the team more with his glove and his strikeouts than he helps with his homers in garbage time. When the game hangs in the balance he is not knocking in runs very often. If Reynolds makes the throw on the bunt tonight, the O's win the game. Instead it all unravels from there. Bring in another minor leaguer to play third that has an outstanding glove and can also hit .201 or better. Don't care if he hits HRs or not. Give our pitchers some help!

strange that the o's weren't wearing the road jerseys tonight. was it some sort of message?

Things are getting ugly. It's funny, but I am longing for the "good old days" of last August and September, when the O's seemed red hot.

Something IS wrong--either Buck has thrown in the towel, the new players are a disaster, or Buck is possessed by Dave Trembley.

This is a lovefest not a rivalry. They share broadcasts, announcer and mascots.

I guess the Jeremy Accardo 'era' is over. I actually thought he was going to be a good pick up but he really pitched badly lately.
On the other hand, so has Gonzalez and why is he still around?
Buck got outmanaged last night and he looks lost or disinterested-take your pick.
This team looks pathetic as it lacks plate discipline, the ability to hit in the clutch, not to mention zero team speed. Pretty hard to manaufacture runs when the the stolen base isn't even an option and most players are station-to-station on the base paths.
Factor in the fact that most starters can't pitch into the 7th inning, with half the 'pen ineffective on most nights and you have all the makings of a 68 win season.

Pete seriously how much longer can buck accept how reynolds is playing. His 15 errors leads the entire major leagues. You can't continue to get good pitching performances from this young staff and not make the routine plays behind them. Enough is enough. I thought buck was big on the word accountability well i am still waiting???

Not that this makes fun reading for us O's fans, but here's a somewhat dispassionate summary of last evening's march of futility:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/blog/archives/11966

The disparity in hits makes the game look a bit more lopsided in the Orioles favor than it was: the singles-machine had 18 hits and 0 walks; the Nationals had 10 hits, drew 6 walks, and had one reach base on an error.

I thought this type of baseball was over
after we hired buck. where is the showalter magic??? these guys are
playing like sandlot players...either the
coachs are stupid or the players are
not listening...where is trembly when u
need him

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
