Ravens: Mason not convinced lockout will cause crime wave
Ravens player rep Derrick Mason was asked after Tuesday's unsanctioned players workout at Johnny Unitas Stadium whether he agreed with Ray Lewis's controversial contention that a lengthy NFL labor stoppage might cause an increase in street crime.
If you didn't see the ESPN interview, here's what Lewis said: "Do this research. If we don't have a season. Watch how much evil, which we call crime, how much crime picks up, if you take away our game...There's nothing else to do."
Mason tried not to cast himself in opposition to Lewis when he was asked for his reaction, but he obviously could not help himself.
"I respect anybody's opinion,'' he said. "Ray's a passionate guy, and of anybody I respect him as a football player and a person. But I'm not naive or arrogant enough to think what I do is going to affect John Doe or Mary Sue when they are at home or out there walking the street. I'm not going to be that arrogant.
"My life and what I do doesn't necessarily affect someone else on an everyday basis. They might get disappointed because we're not playing on Sunday, but for them to go out and change their whole lifestyle based on what I do. That's pure arrogance, I think. I'm not going to think that. But you respect everybody's opinion. If he felt that way, he felt that way for a reason."

We need to lock out reporters talking to players...... Until there is football to talk about, nothing good will come of it.

I've got to agree with Ray Lewis.
If there's no football on Sunday afternoon, I can't think of anything better to do than rob a Best Buy.
What a goon...

Mr Lewis,
Statistics show that as the temperature drops, so does crime. Therefore, crime will actually drop during football season. Do actual research.

It will certainly give Ray Ray plenty of time to make more "Old Spice" foam man commercials. What an idiot!!!

As someone who has lived in the ghetto of Philadelphia (not quite 46th street, but close enough on 42nd) and in several Northern African cities with a LOT of poverty surrounding, I think he makes a point that if there isn't something to do people go looking for something to do and considering man's nature (depravity of man is not just a theological concept but easily ascertained via experience -- everyone has been wronged, often most likely, and wronged in return -- and psychological observation).
Here in Africa, when there is Champions League soccer or World Cup soccer people watch. Even the multitudes of poor street kids who always seem to be making trouble are sitting outside coffee shops on soccer days watching, waiting, and talking about the games. I think what Lewis has to say, while he is not a scholar and likely hasn't funded his own research project, has some validity to it. And, it seems to me, that Derek Mason has probably not entirely understood the point Lewis was trying to make, in that it was not meant in an arrogant way like Lewis himself because he played football was saving the world.

I love how brave and tough you guys are, calling Ray and Derrick names behind the anonymity of your computers...

Doug M. has a point. If the Sun reporters want something productive to do why not interview Lee Macphail IV and ask him why the Oriole farm system is in shambles, and how he got the job after being fired from three teams.
Posted by: Gil | May 24, 2011 5:17 PM
Second line: "While posters are ignorantly saying 'you're an idiot ray' and such, you come to the table with sophistication and intelligence."
Third line (paraphrased): "Derrick Mason is dumber than a freakin' stump."
You're an inspiration to us all, wayne!

Gil-
I have the answer - "Because the MacPhail's like to keep things under wraps and doesn't like to discuss current baseball operations".
Sound familiar?
Posted by: dave in glen burnie | May 24, 2011 5:42 PM
Gil says
"Lee Macphail IV and ask him why the Oriole farm system is in shambles?"
uhhh cause it's not?
Look whos come through the minor league system the last couple years
Weiters Matusz Arieta Tilman Britton Berken Bergesen Adams Snyder
Yeah what a shambles....
Your leader Wayne has been prover a liar and fraud but I won't hold it against his followers...
but man now we have to hear about the younger Macpahil on every post?
And I'm obsessed? Yeah right
Posted by: smitty | May 24, 2011 6:07 PM
smitty,
The farm system is a mess and Keith Law and Ken Rosenthal say so. I think it's ranked 23rd or so. It's partly because Andy and his nephew don't know where Latin America is. They probably think it is the hispanic section on the south side of chicago. Of the players you mentioned Andy and his relative are only responsible for Tillman and he's not exactly lights out.
Why do you have to denigrate other posters by calling them followers? I post what I want and what I think. It just so happens that there are other people with somewhat similar opinions.
Besides, I think it is time that Lee Macphail IV is called out for his ineptness. But, he gets it honest.
Posted by: Gil | May 24, 2011 6:43 PM
Gil, So no love for them developing players either huh?
I believe most of the ones I've mentioned developed under the Macphails.
Pretty successful couple years if you ask me.
And Klein and Machado and several others in the pipeline.
Far from what you are trying to portray.
I look forward to another 3 years of the Macphail crew to have this organization not only be competitive but to win the Uncle his 3rd and the nephew his first World Series. Now that will be sweet won't it?
Posted by: smitty | May 24, 2011 6:57 PM
btw just messing by calling you Waynes "follower". You both are pretty caustic and both seem to hate some successful people with a passion but I see you are your own man.
Posted by: smitty | May 24, 2011 7:00 PM
To be fair, Gil, Lee IV is Director of Pro Scouting, so, according to his title, he probably doesn't have anything to do with amateur scouting
Posted by: not brooks | May 24, 2011 7:21 PM
smitty,
Blind squirrels like Andy and the boy stumble on a nut every now and then. Players signed are supposed to develop, not regress. The fact that the farm system has also regressed under the "clan" tells you all you need to know about their ability.
NB,
As close is he is to Andy, I'm sure he shares some input on all scouting initiatives. If not, look at the long list of bums he helped to bring in here, this years' group included. The Macphails are running the whole show, in my opinion. That's why we stink.

How many times have you called people you don't agree with Orioles employees, warehousers, sycophants, AM relatives....same damn thing.
Nice to meet you, Mr. Pot.
Posted by: Kettle | May 24, 2011 9:07 PM
It's funny how that works...
I've been accused of definitely being...
An employee
A relative
an idiot
a blind follower of andy
stupid
did i say a close relative...
for what am I called these things you may ask?...
because I support and continue to support a rebuilding effort of our beloved Orioles and didn't expect it to happen on someone elses timetable...
as thay say just "don't call me late for dinner"
Posted by: smitty | May 24, 2011 9:29 PM
nb - good point, which I am sure will be ignored. I have a question - as far as you know, do the minors fall under Pro Scouting? I would think it does.

Bob -
Don't throw my name in the mix.
Sometimes I agree with Pete, sometimes I don't. Other times I don't participate. I don't need to make it a point to disagree for the sake of arguement just to get attention.
I've only seen you post within the past week. When have I ever made it a point to agree with anybody since then?
Posted by: dave in glen burnie | May 24, 2011 10:35 PM
You're hardcore, Bob. I'm impressed.
Posted by: Agent Orange | May 24, 2011 10:53 PM

I had to scroll back to the top to make sure this started out as a RAVENS blog...

I think what Ray Lewis is saying is that if it wasnt for football on Sunday, he would have been more likely to be into illegal activity. There is another way of looking at it. If it wasnt for people taking time on Sundays for football, perhaps they would have more time to go to church and that would reduce crime more than anything else.

Settle down Bob or whatever your name is...the world and this blog don't revolve around your hurt feelings.
I rarely read this blog anymore. Too many self centered idiots.
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: NC, don't worry about Bob, who suddenly appeared and posted about 10 times in a day expressing outrage at my treatment of him and "wayne." For the record, I was just going to put wayne/bob/whoever in the penalty box for a few days, but I think his time here has passed. Hopefully, he'll move on voluntarily, with our thanks for keeping the blog alive all these years.
Posted by: NC Terp Fan | May 25, 2011 8:48 AM
Is this the end of Bob or Wayne???
The writing styles dictate it could be the same.
And the method of madness shows an exact ire.
Posted by: Dan F. | May 25, 2011 9:42 AM
Oh, Lord, I hope Bob, Wayne, and some others aren't gone, they're the only reasons to read this blog. After reading their drivel, I'm ready for anything.
And to be honest, they're not always wrong, there is some truth in what they say, that cannot be denied.
But boy, you'd think they think this is the '62 Mets.
