O's: Another head-scratcher

What is it about the Orioles that makes them so willing to help a struggling pitcher snap out of a funk. Jeff Francis is coming off a couple of difficult starts, so -- of course -- he has cruised through the first three innings, even though he clearly is struggling with his command.

He has gone to full counts with several hitters, but the O's just seem befuddled by his offspeed stuff, even though he is not a big velocity guy.

Meanwhile, Brad Bergesen looked great in the first inning, then dug himself a hole by walking Billy Butler on four pitches to open the second. He was actually fortunate to get out of the inning with only three runs across.

Instant update: Butler just hit a sharp grounder that nicked Bergesen. Lest anyone forget, he was the guy who drilled Bergesen in the shin in 2009 and cut short Brad's impressive rookie season.

Luuuuuuuuke! I had a feeling Luke was going to do some damage. I was disappointed with his strikeout earlier, because I thought he was going to launch one. He is seeing this guy pretty good.

Bold prediction. Luke hits another one.

Pete's reply: I'd like to jump on board with that prediction, but I doubt Luke sees Francis again. He's thrown a lot of pitches.

I have a theory on Nick Markakis after I saw him slide for that ball and missing it by 2 feet. I think his vision is not right. He may need contacts. I think that also explains why he is not seeing the ball well and swinging at junk. Markakis has been one of the better pitch recognition hitters in the league, since the day in stepped on the field. So what's happening right now is highly unusual.

Too bad. I was hoping to see if Vlad could go the whole season without drawing a walk. Damn you Jeff Francis!

But seriously, how have the O's not pounded this guy? Low to mid 80's junk and still making us look foolish...

better players

inept

Time to call the manager out again! Berken was very hittable tonight. He got lucky once. He should have been pulled out. With the winning run at 3rd you need to bring JJ to keep the ball in the infield and give you a chance to make a play at the plate. Poor managing. That's all I can say about that.

Good night everyone!

I bet the o's get more hits with two outs and nobody on base than any other team but they just can't seem to get the hits when they count. you watch a couple of games and you thank they are breaking out of that streak and then they turn around and do it again. my own personal opinion is I believe they are putting to much faith in lee, reynolds and vlad and they are just not doing the job, once a week is not getting it done. I don't know maybe buck see's something in them that I don't see!! they keep saying well they came over from the national league and they are not use to the pitchers well Ho Ho is the pichers mound 6" higher and the distance to home plate one foot further I don't think so. the pitcher still throws the ball and batter tries to hit it, same in the national as it is in the american league. I just don't think you can keep putting up with that they have already played 28 games, it's time to get more consistant and get it together if you expect to win something.

forget it

Re: dr. Schmuck's column on glass half full.
Peter, if orange kook aid were booze, you'd be in aa. Old inconsistent and undisciplined. Once again, Small Peter's thrift-store budget has brought us the halt, the lame and the warm bodies we need to contend ... In 1998. This new, improved roster will lose 90 games, without the flair or the mystery of previous teams firmly lodged in baltimore's sports hall of shame.
Somewhere, Rick helling is warming up, getting ready for his one-year, free agent deal (@ $8 million & you'll laud him as good in the clubhouse. But they don't play the games in the clubhouse. Mr. Selig: tear down this franchise!

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
