Orioles: Thanks Joe...
Bartolo Colon was in complete control of Wednesday night's game. He had pitched shutout eight innings and allowed just three hits. He had walked one and struck out seven. He had thrown only 87 pitches -- an amazing 61 of them for strikes.
So, why did manager Joe Girardi go to Mariano Rivera to pitch the ninth inning?
Because he has Mariano Rivera to pitch the ninth inning, of course, so it's almost impossible to second-guess the decision to bring him into a one-run save situation. Except maybe this time.
This was one of those games in which the Orioles were happier to see the closer come into the game than the other team. They've actually had some success against Rivera and they had some again, scoring a run in the ninth to hand him his third blown save of the season. It also was his eighth career blown save against the O's.

And Thank You Vladdy! for the Sac Fly... that some of us thought was a home -run.
Otherwise, I think the O's would be hitting the showers right now and Showalter would wrapping up he post game interview!
We're still in this!
Come on O's finish them.
PS It was good to see Gregg have a strong 9th and Koji looked good too (10th) Since, I have been negative again on Gregg gotta give him some dap even though it's his job!

does buck think so lowly of fox that he doesn't even let him pinch hit for luke against the lefty?
That is luke scott, not ted williams
Hey Buck, it's not ted williams

Pete,
The Yankees have done everything they can to gift-wrap this game, but the O's are refusing the gift.
That said, here comes ... drum-roll please... the bold prediction: O's Win!
Posted by: Mesotheliangelos | May 18, 2011 10:37 PM
Meso, let's hope so. Gift-wrap is right. Two consecutive innings of loading the bases... squandered.
Ah, the entrance of Jeremy Accardo. That may end things quickly enough.

this game is killing me.
Posted by: paulie | May 18, 2011 10:56 PM
The Orioles need to get rid of Mark Reynolds as fast as they can. It does not matter where he goes, just out of Baltimore.
Useless. He is useless.
My prediction: Mark Reynolds will be somewhere else besides Baltimore by the All Star game, because he is that bad.
Posted by: jim66 | May 18, 2011 11:21 PM
Brandon Snyder walk off?
that should be in the 16th right...
how many consecutive gold gloves did Brooks win? 16 huh...
Posted by: paulie | May 18, 2011 11:26 PM
Peter,
Your reply to Meso on the last subject was asinine.......
To go that far out of your way to defend the O's and AM was beneath you.
So Tex was in front of the NY media, with his Yank shirt and hat on...... and he said he was a Matingly fan..then said he was a Yankee fan.
That's your proof that the O's weren't lying? Give me a break and more importantly.... do better work.
Tex now saying that the O's showed the LEAST interest of the five teams involved should be embarrassing to you and the SUN. Where was the reporting? Where was the digging?
I'll tell you where it was...... so far up AM's azz that you didn't see sun for days.
Enjoy looking in the mirror tonight, and all means, don't write anything that ever comes close to resembling the truth about this organization.
You're now a true Insider Pete..... Congrats
..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Wayne, you're reply to me from a computer during the game exposes you again as the ultimate poser. You claim to be a season ticket holder, but obviously had better things to do than go to the game....either that or your mom insisted you come home after the 10th to be ready for school.
Posted by: wayne | May 18, 2011 11:29 PM
Snyder's in for Vlad and due to come up fourth in the 14th.
Game winning home run, coming up for the O's this inning...

jim66,
I'm willing to withdraw my entire 401k and bank savings, sell the house and everything else. Take all that money to Vegas and bet them against Reynolds' expected production for the year, and I'm very confident I would be a very wealthy multimillionaire in heartbeat.
Posted by: Mesotheliangelos | May 18, 2011 11:37 PM
Gonzalez -gone.
He should be DFA'd by Friday if this team has any guts.
That was bush league crap.
Enough is enough.
Posted by: jim66 | May 18, 2011 11:48 PM
Well that's a few hours that I will never get back. Will the O's ever finish the deal? Unbelieveable, the freaking bullpen does it's job and then it's Gonzo time. Alas, it IS Gonzo time and we got Gonzoed bases clearing triple.
Innings before:
Pie just misses.
Vlad does what he was supposed to
Scott can't come thru with clutch hitting
although he played a decent 1st base
You know on Vlad's infield single. I think I would have sent Pie! If Tex threw him out, then he threw him out. I could have dealt with that.
Fiddlesticks is all I can say.... FIDDLESTICKS!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: The Squirrel | May 18, 2011 11:50 PM
IS Gonzo AM's guy.... or his nephews?
He is a disgrace and he exemplifies the disastrous run for AM.
He was brought i last yr to be the teams CLOSER, which was a mistake since day one.
The reason he has stayed on the team since is 1) AM wants to save face, and 2) money.
Gonzo acts ticked off every time he does something bad.... problem is, he looks that way every game.
It may not be tonight, but at some point, the Yanks will retaliate. Too bad it can't be AM in the batters box instead of some poor, innocent player.
You're a loser AM..... You've lost more than anyone in the LAST 20 years.
Now Yank fans are chanting in your own park..... which only magnifies your incompetence....
Posted by: wayne | May 18, 2011 11:53 PM
They just beat us with a hand tied behind their back. They had 3 relievers that were "untouchable". And on the road.
And we still lost.
I wish I could make myself stop following this team. Maybe next year.
If the Orioles front office had any semblance of pride in their work, Gonzalez would be DFA tomorrow.
And I typed all of that before his punk ass beaned the yank backup after he blew the game on his first pitch. That punk move moved our STARTING ROTATION!!! MY GOD WHAT DOES THIS GUY HAVE TO DO TO GET CUT>
HE LIES LAST YEAR ABOUT BEING HURT, DIRECTLY TO THE PEOPLE THAT GIVE HIM A $10mILLION CONTRACT.
HE IS A TERRIBLE PITCHER
HE BEANS A SCRUB IN THE HEAD WHEN HE BLOWS A GAME.
Are the Orioles still a major league team or are we a AAAA team?
Posted by: Mike in Columbia | May 18, 2011 11:53 PM
Pete, I need your help with this one. Why in the world would Buck bring in tomorrow's starter for what amounts to an inning of mop-up duty?
He should either have brought in a) used Bergesen, since it's his day to throw; b) Arrieta, and skipped his start Friday, keeping Bergesen and everyone else on regular rest; or c) Jones, putting Fox in left and Pie in center.
What a waste. Can you please shed some light on this decision?

Pete,
About your answer to my "lack" of evidence on Teixeira wanting to be a Baltimore Oriole.
To borrow one of your favorite lines: Way to see the forest for the trees.
For the longest time, the contention among fans and journalists has been that Teixeira didn't want to come here. You are absolutely right. I stand corrected. I have no evidence that he wanted to come here. Au contraire, I have plenty of evidence to support the claim I've refuted for years. In his own words, Teixeira said that the O's were the team with the lowest offer of all? A Superstar looking for a big payday when he hits free agency is not going to accept low-ball offers from the clowns in Baltimore. If anything, he would be offended.
You're right. I'm wrong. Teixeira didn't want to come here.
Let me ask you this? Would you consider Baltimore if you felt they are not really trying to sign you?
Somehow I have a feeling, you're already working on a spin-job with your next article about Mark Teixeira's latest comments. Anyone wants to bet me on that? I'm in a betting mood tonight.
Posted by: Mesotheliangelos | May 18, 2011 11:59 PM
And PS: I agree Gonzalez should now be released. Not only does he cough up the lead, he then throws at a guy like an idiot and costs us one of our starters to clean up his mess. Unacceptable and I hope Buck makes an example of him.
Posted by: Christopher | May 19, 2011 12:00 AM
You said it all wayne. He is absolutely Andy's guy and pretty much defines the talent evaluation of this franchise. Watching the Yankee fans in the first row around the stadium makes me sick to even be an oriole fan. This franchise brings the entire city down, making Baltimore a national joke
Posted by: Tim | May 19, 2011 12:00 AM
And I'll add another comment, this one directly to the "reporters" that cover the Orioles.
Does any one of you have the guts, or pride in their work, or care enough about how well you do your job, to ask either MacPhail, or Showalter, or Friggin Angelos -
Why is Michael Gonzalez on this team?
Posted by: Mike in Columbia | May 19, 2011 12:02 AM
Does it ever occur to you guys that you force Pete (and others) to go to that extreme because of your constant harping at the other end of the spectrum? I wouldn't do wayne the justice of agreeing with him on something either, because he's an attention-seeking blowhard who just loves to get a reaction out of people.
If Pete's bad for going to one extreme, how bad are those who constantly run to the other extreme for some extra attention?
Posted by: Christopher | May 19, 2011 12:04 AM
pathetic...
Posted by: Rainmaker | May 19, 2011 12:04 AM
really...that's the way it ends. lead off hit, a walk and...and...
blah. grr. and sigh.
Posted by: paulie | May 19, 2011 12:07 AM
Mike Gonzalez has no idea where the ball is going when it leaves his hand. He's done.
The Orioles failed to score a run against a reliever making his major league debut.
What, does this team need to go on a mean ass losing streak to get the dopes running the show to do something different?
Posted by: jim66 | May 19, 2011 12:08 AM
Chris, I agree with you about Guthrie. To me, this is just another sign of how they totally disrespect this guy at every step. He may be the most rested of the starters, but you don't put that guy in the game in that situation.
I'm no fan of Andy's. I actually think he has more than proven he's not the man for this job. He's just awful. But I've also lost some respect for Buck. Maybe he's just been unlucky, but his stubborness with the lineup all season, along with his handling of the bullpen has taken some of the shine off his luster.
Meso and wayne, I agree big time with you guys about Tex. Pete's response was bush, and speaks to how the Sun unconditionally backs the team at every turn.
Posted by: Bob | May 19, 2011 12:30 AM
Wayne and Bob,
That's cool. I respect Pete regardless. He has his opinions, and I have mine. I'm irrational at times because I'm a fan. He his more level headed because he is a professional, and not necessarily as emotionally involved with the team as you or me.
I guess I should consider myself "privileged" that he takes the time to read what I write and engage in conversations, because arguing with Smitty, Paulie et al over AM is no fun after a while.
It's actually fun when Pete chimes in. It's a bit more intellectually challenging. He should engage us more.
now ... Cue the Christophers of the World to tell me not to flatter myself.
Posted by: Mesotheliangelos | May 19, 2011 12:43 AM
Hard fought game, but once again, Gonzalez forgot to pitch and not THROW.
And Mark Reynolds is a frontrunner for the Garrett Aktins free agent bust award!
Posted by: walt | May 19, 2011 3:09 AM
I know the Orioles had numerous opportunities in this game and to cite just one example might be considered by some as a bit narrow in scope.
However, since he seems to be on a roll, I cannot help but point out that yet again, Mr. Showalter failed to make a managerial response when , in the 11th inning, Girardi brought in a tough lefty, Boone Logan, to face Luke Scott with the bases loaded.
I think 99 out of 100 managers would have pinch-hit Jake Fox for the left-handed-battng Scott in that situation.
But Buck just sat there and let Fox watch as Luke struck out on four pitches.
You know, they call it "percentage baseball" for a reason. Girardi recognized it immediately. And it goes BEYOND just the percentage factor.
Percentages simply tell you that a lefty pitcher will fare better against a lefty batter.
But KNOWING YOUR INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS tells you that a pitcher of Logan's style and power would stand a better chance against a batter of Scott's style and power.
It was a no-brainer to bat Fox there and Buck failed to do so.
He also failed when he brought in Gonzalez.
If Guthrie was part of a contingency plan for the final inning, then why could he not have been used INSTEAD of Gonzalez in the same inning ?
And why not Bergesen instead of Guthrie ? Why mess up Guthrie's routine ?
Just stupid managing.
Posted by: Bear the Birdfan | May 19, 2011 5:39 AM
Perhaps Buck can get AM in the office and give him a little pep talk, you know, something like..'It's him or me, you decide".
There's no baseball downside to letting a few of these guys hit the street.
Can Gozo be fixed? Reynolds? What's the real value of Fox if you won't pinch hit him?
You bring Snyder up, and the kid is gonna sit on the bench. Why? Who cares. You're not winning the division.Start managing like it.
Posted by: jim66 | May 19, 2011 7:32 AM
Shrewd move by Buck by putting in Guthrie. This allows Guthrie to avoid facing Sabathia and avoid another frustrating evening of pitching a good game only to lose because of the hitless wonders.
Posted by: Tony | May 19, 2011 8:51 AM
The Sun should do an article on all the underachieving relief pitchers our GM has trotted out during his tenure. They are to numerous to recount here. Lets get someone who can evaluate talent and develop a farm system that produces.
Posted by: gilgamesh1 | May 19, 2011 8:54 AM
@jim66
It's him or me, you decide".
Who's the him in this case? I am confused. As for managing, we still have a sporting chance. Problem is Vlad was clutch last night, the rest of the team was not. We are wasting Vlad. Like I said before I might have sent Pie when A Rod sent that throw down the line. Tex had to slide and dive going towards the outfield. I am not sure if he could have made that throw! What did the O's have to lose. John Russell is either too conservative or pushes the envelope too much there's no in between with him
Tony, you really think that? The O's usually hit CC pretty good. We just haven't won any slugfests with him since opening day with Guthrie in 2009.
You're right though, I wouldn't waste Guthrie, maybe Bergy can come thru for us!
Posted by: The Squirrel | May 19, 2011 8:57 AM
jim66---I was also waiting for the Fox for Scott pinch-hitting move that never came. Buck should've countermoved Girardi's move when he brought in the lefty to face Scott with the bases loaded and one out. Scott looked pathetic on the strikeout!
Posted by: CurlyC | May 19, 2011 8:58 AM
On the base of bad managing: Luke Scott also came up to bat with a man on 1B (13th/14th inning eludes me), no outs...team play says bunt and get the guy over to 2B.
That is managing. That is winning baseball. No he made the first out and the runner did not move over a base.
Side note: The first pitch strike to Markakis was lousy with bases loaded and 2 out in the twelvth inning. That was really an at bat changing pitch call. Though that was not the only one. The umpire was not great.
Also some of the complaining on pitches was excessive by the Yankees. One instance was A rod. The third strke call on him was right over the plate. That may have ired the O's team. Although no defense of Gonzo (WHO SHOULD BE GIVEN A LENGTHY WINTER BREAK STARTING TODAY).
Posted by: Dan F. | May 19, 2011 9:02 AM
This team has lost 4 games this year that they should have won, games where the supposed improvements to the lineup and the bullpen were going to pay dividends for the young starting staff, which has acquitted itself quite well, even without Matusz.
So when Matusz comes back, what changes? Just another well pitched game, that's all.No more runs. No fewer bullpen collapses.
The young staff and Jones and Weiters have done their part-they've gotten better. But this is playing out as just a dysfunctional one-dimensional lot of pieces that don't fit well together. Injuries, almost injuries, plain flat out piss poor performances from veterans who continue to play so poorly that moving them becomes not only problematical but impossible.
When searching for an identity, that's a tough place to land.

This was very disturbing. I couldn't sleep and now I'm at work so tired I can't keep my eyes open.
Posted by: Gil | May 19, 2011 9:16 AM
First of all, wayne...I'm not your bro. I'd probably off myself if I was.
Secondly:
"The only people who go to extremes are the people who believe in anything AM has done for this team."
You go to extremes all the time. "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"
"Pete, you're just a corporate shill with your head buried up AM's @$$!"
Blah...blah...blah.
It's very clear you just love to hear the sound of your own self-important voice. THe truth is, no one here cares what you have to say. Your words have no value because they clearly come from ignorant anti-Oriole bitterness. The only reason people address you is because you make these forums insufferable.
Do you know what "fan" means? It doesn't mean pick a team you hate and dedicate yourself to trashing them and antagonizing their supporters as much as possible. It's clear you have no interest in seeing this team do well/giving credit when they do well, so get a life and leave already. I don't care what you say about how long you've followed this team - you are not a fan, you are not a supporter, so hit the bricks.
Take your arrogance and ignorance to Yankee Stadium - where you'll fit right in.
Posted by: Christopher | May 19, 2011 10:52 AM
BB,
I agree with you on Buck. Does he have an ear piece with Trembley calling in the moves?
My other guess is: MASN was looking for another take of their commercial on the "unconventional managing" style Buck employs. Afterall, perception means more to Angelos than wins.
Posted by: Mesotheliangelos | May 19, 2011 12:49 PM
Look, I get what Buck was thinking last night letting Scott hit against the lefty. I'm sure he's worried what if Weiters goes down...I only have 1 backup catcher & that's Fox.
What he had to do was roll the dice & make a call that he felt would be best for the team given all the consequences. As second guessers, we now know Weiters did not go down, Scott did & Fox just sat.
If it were to be done again, chances are Buck may say screw "what if", Scott couldn't hit a beachball right now let alone a 94 mph slider from Logan so "Fox, grab a bat".
This team continues to frustrate & their swing at the 1st. pitch approach is making me sick.
Last thing...Gonzalez should be put on waivers immediately. I could care less if the pitch that hit the kid just called up from Scranton was intentional or not...he is a disgrace to the uniform & is no longer capable of getting major league talent out. If I hear him say he's finally "figured it out" one more time, I'll lose the small degree of faith I still have in this team. He belongs on a bus riding the dirt roads of Southern Mexico looking for a game not staying in the best hotels, flying across the US all summer & collecting major league meal money.
If McFail has one ball left, he'd DFA him today.
We not only look like losers, we look like REAL losers!
Thanks Andy...anyone else left on the scrap heap you want to sign?
Posted by: jack | May 19, 2011 4:07 PM
I think - as history repeast itself - that Buck is startimng to understand what is going on with this team.
The Rwd Sox game was the same game that got Sam Perlozzo fired a few years back. Only now we go home and lose in the fifteenth ro the Skanks, followed by a wipeout by the same team.
They are falling back into their losing ways and have no desire to change themselves. And Buck is finding out thatr there is really no level to wait itself out.
We're screwed,, folks.. Musy have been a hell of a fun ride back to the motel.
