Orioles: Retreat apparently is an option

The Orioles pitching staff has been the victim of non-support for much of the young season, but there is no excuse for what has happened the past two nights. The Yankees and Nationals have combined to score 26 runs in a total of 15 innings, and the Nats still have three innings to pile on some more runs.

This is the same Nationals offense that had scored a total of 12 runs in its last five games, but Jake Arrieta struggled from the outset and gave up six runs in 3 2/3 innings and reliever Jason Berken gave up six more in just one inning of work.

It was a disturbing turn for a team that already had suffered a series of painful losses this week to the Red Sox and Yanks. Jeremy Guthrie will try to restore order Saturday afternoon, but who knows what he'll have to offer after having his pitching schedule disrupted by the need for him to pitch in relief late Wednesday night.

Not-so-fun fact: Friday night's game marked the ninth time in franchise history that the Orioles have allowed at least 13 runs in back-to-back games. The record is three straight, set Aug. 10-12, 1993.

Meet the new O's, same as the old O's.

If there was ever a game that required Gonzo's unique talents, this is it. I was wondering why Buck didn't drag him out to get pummeled by the Yankees yesterday.

O's in free fall....I keep believing the bottom has been reached and I keep being wrong.

Buck really needs to pull a Hal McRae and throw some stuff around the office tonight. What an embarrassing week for this team.

now tell me, why did buck bring gregg into the game? is he pissed off at him? He brings the closer into a 10 run game?
What the hell is that all about? Is that the 'managing out of the box' he's been talking about?
This is just all too funny tonite.

Jim66,

No, Jones is not the complaint tonight. His play on those two balls just exemplifies the evening. ANd I'm sorry, but if he's a good CF, he's suppose to catch that ball. Again, it would have been a very good play, not a great one.

But your point is well taken. On a night like this, there's no reason to pick on one player. All and all, this is not a major league baseball team.

Gonzo out, Patton in.
Klein in, gregg out.
Snyder plays, scott sits
Bell at 3b, reynolds bench
Berken out, simon in

crap in, crap out

Fire Macphail. Fire Buck......

Nah just keep goin.....I don't want it to be said I never post on here when things are bad...

This would be a bad time right now, correct?

I got nothin...but the great thing about baseball is they get to come out tomorrow and start a winning streak!!!

Go O's!!!!

No worries, fellas.

We're only 4.5 games out on May 20th!

Nevermind the fact that the last four games have shown us some of the most pathetic baseball we've seen in these fourteen years of futility.

Nevermind the fact that The pitching staff has given up 30 runs in 24 hours.

Nevermind the fact that the "bullpen" gave up five home runs tonight.

Nevermind the fact that we just loat a horrific game to the last place team in the NL East.

Things are about to turn around!

Andy's a such a breath of fresh air after Flanagan, Duquette and Thift!

Woo!

The good news: A record breaking night for the Nats. Runs, Home Runs, and more.

The bad news: It was against possibly the worst team in baseball.

I'm sorry Baltimore fans, but I don't even know how you can watch your team most games. The Nats aren't very good, but at least there's hope for the future. There's no questioning of whether the organization wants to improve the product on the field each year.

As once a fan of the Orioles, I'm more convinced than ever that I made a good decision when converting to the Nats a couple years ago. Angelos will never allow you to have a winner, I just don't understand how you can take much more.

Again, all teams have some good players. The Orioles have far to few however. Been that way for a very long time. Sad to see things haven't changed.

The games like these two happen and I don't hurt because your not supposed to win them. It is the ones you are supposed to win but don't that tear my heart out...

Yeah natman. You guys have Jason werth for the next 42 years. That should get you to the top quicker than the O's.

nb,
See, doen't it feel good to remain upbeat about this team?

I'm with you, tomorrow we start again and Matusz is coming back soon... cheer up man, it's getting better....you just don't know it yet

To bad Peter that today isn't Friday the 13th. It would be part of the Orioles 13 issue that they seem to be currently having.

The Bullpen Stinks!
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Apparently, the same place Jake Arrieta's fastball. I don't know! Non existent. Boy, I am glad the O's shut him down last season making a world of difference for the 2011 season let me tell ya! Did he even use his fastball. I didn't see his usual 95 or 96 mph??!!??

Also, the jam up with Adams,Pie, and Russell on Pie's long drive to right center! Somebody better know something. Did Pie miss the stop sign at second or Russell pulled a Russell?

My brother texted me said the Nationals don't ever score 6 runs a game and they manage to do it twice in two seperate innings in one game. Leave it to the Orioles to let a line up that doesn''t have Zimmerman, instead they have a 43 year old fat guy DH'ing with a batting average below the mendoza line!

Jayson Weth got healthy with two long ome runs!

Ok ya'all g night! I am aggravated more then ever! Vlad had another multi hit game. Can't wait for next week when the Royals come to town. They're going to put 34 runs on the O's in on game. I think their offense is twice as potent as the Nationals! Woo Hoo watch the plan unfold

Bartender! I'll have what smitty's havin'.

Got the ball rolling now.
Especially after Monday's loss, when you have to start wondering about Buck's motivations lately after he brings the horrific Gonzalez into a game he had absolutely no business being in, in Fenway Park of all places. He of all people should know better that it does not take much to trigger this club, which has absolutely no margin for error, to get going on another run of terrible baseball.
On that front, so far so good. The only issue is that this is not a bunch of really good players having a bad stretch, this is a below average leaderless bunch on a 13-23 run since the Yankee Stadium meltdown.
No easy answers here. I got my money on him not finishing his 3 years here.He simply won't be able to take it.

Someone remind Mark Connor that the Orioles drove Mazzone into retirement.
It took some doing, but they were up to the challenge.

Can't really describe the Yard tonight. Only 24k for two teams within what.... 30 miles?

Can it really get worse that that? I mean it was a beautiful night, with no school tomorrow..... and 24k?

Obviously it's because both teams are as pathetic as it gets. It's just on this night, the Nationals made the O's look like the team they basically are.

It was fun watching the ball fly out of the Yard though. If you weren't careful, you'd get a bad case of whiplash.

Nat fans are fun spirited. They know their teams sucks like the O's, so I didn't see anyone really gloating.

smitty,

Good job posting after another bad night my man. Good form. I hope you're thinking about those 20 games for 2012 should the O's win your predicted 97 games.

I am a little confused though brobro. If the house is only half built, meaning they won't compete until 2015, where does the 97 wins for this year come in to play?

You mean 97 this year, then 130 wins in 2015?

Holy Gazoo smitty

maybe it's time buck started worrying about what his GM is up to, and how to get his pitchers to keep the ball in the park, rather than worrying about Theo and the Yankee strike zone. Perhaps he can worry about that when the Os can stay on the same field as those 2.

Well, I tried to remain optimistic, but now I'm ready to call it. This season is over, and there is no hope left for this team.

It was fun for a bit deluding myself that they would turn it around, but I was wrong.

Roberts is done. Lee is done. Vlad's still hitting for average, but the power is gone. Reynolds is a bum. Hardy looked like he may be the only decent off-season acquisition, but that’s been proven otherwise these past few games. Jones and Markakis have hit their ceiling; if anything, it seems like Markakis has regressed.

Don’t even get me started on Luke Scott.

The pitching has become a joke, which is really saying something, considering how low the bar has been set these past few years. Thanks Conner.

About the only bright spots on the season have been Wieters, Britton, and…. Wait, I think that’s it. And I’m just waiting for their inevitable epic collapse.

That’s what we do here in Baltimore.

If it makes you feel any better...
Orioles will win today.

2 4

If it makes you feel any better...
Orioles will win today.

2 4

Like Orange today

Well buck seems to have officaly lost this team. Andy you should be very proud of yourself for putting together another horrible team. Now you can all stop wondering why bobby valentine and any other manager with good sense didn't come here.

Blancione

I agree with you . Could I add that we also can stop wondering why prime free agents wont/didnt come here ?

I like to see Andy try explain why he should return as our GM next season .

Convert

I have to say I cant blame you for adopting the Nats . They work hard to put a competitive team on the field .

Sadly , I havent reached my breaking point yet ........

Some understand, but do the rest of you know what is going on in this organization?

People have huge jobs that affect this team... jobs they have no right occupying.

CAN THE SUN PLEASE DO A STORY ON AM'S LAME NEPHEW.

LOOK AT THE LIST AGENT ORANGE PUT UP A FEW DAYS AGO

LOOK AT IT........

And in case anyone forgot already..... Just in case you woke up will full of hope and vigor......

The Baltimore Orioles Lost last night to the Washington Nationals 17-5.

Like Convert says, it was a record breaking night for the team in Washington.

And yep... they showed many of the highlights on ESPN last night and still this morning.

I give a pass to Jake since the guy was due for a stinker. But the Pen? The Pen that so many of you ignorantly said would be a strength of the team?

10 runs - that's a great night.
12 runs - wow, that's a huge offensive night.
14 runs - ok, now it's getting ridiculous.

17 runs - oh, they're playing the Orioles.

17-5 - against the Washington Nationals.

Not that it matters, since the O's will win somewhere around 70 games, thus the season remains meaningless, but 17-5? Against the Nats?

Pretty awful stuff. After the Yankees blowout, I was pretty sure that it was the annual sign of the wheels coming off. I definitely didn't expect giving up 17 runs to the "Walgreens Natinals".

Sigh.

Robert L, that was a brilliant (and hilarious) point about Gonzalez.

Wayne, you're enjoying this. Remarkable.

My concern is the culture of the ballclub. They can go on a tear to begin the season, but that losing mentality is a hair's breadth away. All it takes is a little shaken confidence, and they're playing like they're back in Bluefield for ten to twenty games. You can turn over pretty much the entire roster over four years, and you can bring in a fantastic manager, but when the very culture of the ballclub is dysfunctional (thirteen years will do that), it's like a nagging virus that won't go no matter what treatments you administer along the way.

Dysfunction runs deep. Shoot, even Wayne can tell you that. He's an expert on dysfunction.

Maybe Buck just needs to share his magical spring training video with all of Birdland.

Why is there no criticism of Andy MacFail ... man has put out a terrible team ... and Buck has to stop the daily excuses ... get mad as hell ... he can do that without naming players ..he acts like he doesn't want to hurt some millionaire's feelings... I am weary of watching this team. Are they not even a little embarrassed -- if not for them for us.

Look on the bright side. The National's hitters have got to be exhausted after last night. They'll probably only be able to put up 8 or 10 today. It's early yet, anyway. No need to panic. We're only 5 games out of first. And even if things are a little rocky this year, it never was about{fill in the blank year} anyway. It's about rebuilding through the farm system. And we are going to start as soon as we get one.

Lee Macphail IV has it all under control, right Uncle Andy?

This is Turdland!

This team has no heart. Arrieta showed no life he pitched like he was going through the motions.

The pitching staff has no aggressiveness. They would rather nibble on the edges and pray that the other batter swings when they dont they serve up a thigh high fastball down the middle of the plate.

This team is playing like a team that is getting paid to show up. Just like in the past 4 years this team has no interest in winning. This will cost another manager their job.

The orioles kill me! it just keeps getting worse and worse! Why is Gonzo here? What stage of the "plan" are we in? Is JJ going back on the DL soon? Does comedy Central own MASN??

Gonzo - A ball - learn how to pitch
Berken - release outright
Accardo - back to AAA ball
Rapada - should never pitch to more than 2 batters
Bergensen - Long relief in AA

Mark Reynolds - release outright

How to beat the orioles -

Throw first pitch down middle of plate - observer oriole batter watch it go by

Throw pitch 2 outside observer oriole batter whiff

Throw pitch 3 slider outside and low and win

GTAABTB,

That is a very good question, and since Andy and his nephew won't say, how could we ever figure it out? We are apparently rebuilding in such a complicated and complex fashion that people outside of our legendary front office are unable to grasp the strategy.

All we need to know is that we are rebuilding. There is no time line. There is no time frame. It's just rebuilding time, and we shouldn't be asking stupid questions like when are we going to win. That denigrates the brilliant minds PA brought in to oversee the rebuilding.

Maybe it is time to start thinking about where these fringe players have been coming from in trade. Having they been traded from winning ballclubs?

Scott: Astros are below average
Pie: Cubs have had a couple of OK years, but otherwise not so good
Gregg: Cubs (see above), Blue Jays not so good recently.
Accardo: Blue Jays?
Tillman: Mariners have not been real good.
Patton: Astros
Reynolds: Arizona (remember Buck was there and he must be Buck's buddy)

And that is naming a few.

So when Nick M. is hitting 280 trade him to a winning type team. trade B rob to winning team. Guthrie to a winning team and find good players in return.

That is what the Royals, indians and marlins do.

Lets not build a team under false pretense. If you are going to rebuild with young players do it that way. How many senior citizen ball players do the marlins have? Or the Indians? those are models teams for the O's. Build like they do. This formula is not a winning formula.

Snyder should play everyday right now. Lets see if Josh bell can play here along with Ryan Adams. And exchange Gregg and Gonzo for the best two pitchers in the minors at the given time.

Klein may be on an innings count: He can handle the bullpen. And Double AA has a guy, Clark who is pitching well. Long relieve would suit him right now.

Management needs to think outside this box they have. New philosphy is really needed at this point.

Let's go O's.

can we just change the name of the team to Cubs-East?

It used to be that as a Baltimorean or Marylander you would speak with pride about the Preakness and the Orioles.

But because of politicans' unwillingness to save horse racing in MD, and PA's poor ownership, we can look to neither one with pride.

It's so easy to see what needed (and still needs) to be done with both - investing and leadership. Sure would have been nice to see a renovated Pimlico, a strong horse industry throughout the state, and a baseball team that was strong top to bottom like it used to be. Oh well....

The Vets are counting their money, the Rooks are reading and believing their press clippings. The GM was hired for his baseball "blue blood" to legitimize the ownership, not his ability in running a MLB operation. And the Manager is already nearing the end of his fuse before he explodes. Other than all of this, all is fine in Birdland.

Wayne, remind me where I said I was surprised...?

You bet I enjoy 70 wins--I always enjoy an Oriole win. I'd enjoy about 25 more per season, too.

What's mystifying to me is how an Oriole win leads you to complain, and an Oriole loss (or even a streak of losses) leads you to start crowing and lording over other folks. Riddle me that, Wayneman.

The past four horrific losses have left me angry and bitter.

I'm going to pull the wool over my own eyes for a few minutes with some...

Fun Facts of the Day:

- Mark Reynolds has a .910 OPS over his last seven games! WOW!

- Since bottoming out with a .192 average on April 10, Matt Wieters, the guy all the "experts" labeled as a bust heading into this season, is hitting .292 with an .824 OPS. He may not be "Joe Mauer with power", but that's damn good production from a catcher. Oh, and he's still crushing it with RISP: .548 batting average, 1.573 OPS.

- Vlad still doesn't like to walk, but at least he's taken five free passes in May after refusing to do so in April. Vladdy's hitting .364 this month with an .889 OPS. And he's hitting .306 on the year! Looks like he's not done yet!

- Another Oriole is creeping up to the .300 mark: Adam Jones is currently sitting at .293. He was miserable in April, hitting .218 with a .674 OPS, but since the calendar turned, he's been the best hitter on the team, putting up a .386 average and a .929 OPS. Jonesy's also got 12 walks already this season, putting him on pace for a career high, 48! And! He's got five stolen bases and hasn't yet been caught stealing!

- And now, everyone's favorite whipping boy: Nick Markakis. Poor Nick has been the subject of much abuse this season, following up a disappointing year in 2010 with a .204 average and a .561 OPS in April of 2011. But since the calendar switched to May, old Nick is back to his old self, at least in terms of batting average (.324) and OBP (.393). It should also be mentioned that, after hitting just two home runs and two doubles in 98 April at bats, he's got two home runs and two doubles in 74 at bats in May. Still, he's going to have to really pick it up to avoid career worst in two-baggers. After ripping 43 or more from 2007-2010 (and 25 in his rookie season), Nick's currently on pace for just 15 doubles. Yikes.

Boy, that was fun!

not brooks obviously has no grasp on the concept of sample size.

Todd Pickle obviously didn't read the first, second and last sentences of my 12:20 post.

Jeff in all fairness don't you think the time has come for Andy to take some serious heat for the failures of this club during his tenure. His free agent acquisitions have been costly and very ineffective, we are stuck with lots of dead money on this team right now with no way to move them. Enough is enough Jeff

...............................................................................................
Jeff Z's reply: Yes, absolutely. I thought that the time had come for that last year.

Posted by: blancione | May 21, 2011 12:03 PM

Well then can somebody please tell me why he hasn't and has flown completely under the radar

The Orioles' offense basically quit after the sixth inning Monday. Other than Reynolds' homer, most of the hitters were getting themselves out on one or two pitches against the Sox relievers, instead of working the count. Then came MacPhail's latest stupid signing, Kevin "I Don't Go After Hitters" Gregg, who basically demanded the closer role Koji had earned. There went that game.

Wednesday, Presley's Peons spent eight innings watching Colon pitch on the outside corner without adjusting to it, then Buck makes perhaps the dumbest non-move of the season in the 11th by letting Luke "Can't Hit Lefties" Scott hit instead of pinch-hitting Fox, which was the best chance to win, as Weaver would have. Scott and Wieters then both refuse to try for a bases loaded walk, and we know what happened.

We root for a bunch of losers. Can't spell Orioles without loser.

Ahhhhhhh I love this!!! I can eat my big macs and watch this BS and know I did my job lol. If Buck cant save this team from MacFailure and Petey the greeky nobody can hahahaha see ya later suckers!! Im rich *itch!

I got a job with the Red Sox. Cant wait to play you bums again!!!

Jeff; What concerns me as an Oriole fan isnot so much what`s happening this year, but for the future of this franchise. It appears that Brob may be done,as may Dlee. Reynolds is what Reynolds is--an ineffective player with a terrible hitch in his swing. We`ll need a new infield as well as arebuilt bullpen. How many years can we keep turning the roster over? Do not put the blame on Mcphail people. Put it where it surely belongs-- on the shoulders of Mr. Angelos. He is detached ,dispassionate and totally devoid of any urgency to win. When was th e last time he made a public appearance? As a losing franchise we must overpay to attract free agents IN THEIR PRIME!!! The fans of this once proud franchise deserve better instead of being the Pittsburgh Pirates of the A.L.,and the laughing stock of baseball. Just sell the team Mr. Angelos and GO AWAY!!! Posted by apathetic in birdland!

Season starts and hype begins be excited - the normal losing begins blame players - blame angelos- blame manager and staff - fans fight- blame warehouse- football starts

Until this team at least gets 500 avoid OPACY like herpes!!!

well i see their patience is wearing more thin every day...6 batters have seen a total of 15 pitches

guthrie, up to his old 2 out tricks

what did snyder do? or should i not ask?

not brooks,

I'm with you on Reyes or Prince, I think they're studs. But I also think that you were in favor of Dunn over Derrek Lee, which I disagreed with at the time. You're the first to point out sample size, so the same can be said for the 2010 off-season free agents. What Andy had done in years past, vs. this off season are different tactics. I'd take Vlad and D-Lee over Josh Willingham and Hideki Matsui, and I'd be surprised if you wouldn't too. (is it the Lefty bat?)

Reyes is 29 and going to be one of the top 3 free agents. Regardless of the dollars, the O's need to be a contenteder to contended for Reyes. Or, instead of the 8 year deal he would get this off season, the O's would have to put 10 year's up and the most money by like 12%. As Mes said, "the loser tax".

You have to figure that the Reyes contract will be in the top 7 of all MLB contracts. Adding a "loser tax" means the #1 contract in all baseball. Is Reyes that guy for the O's? I'd say no.

Prince is maybe a different issue, and I'd be more comfortable giving him the most money in baseball (or top 3). But still...dicey.

Andy has put reasonable deals on the table to free agents, and been willing to discuss...he's just not made the desperate move of over paying.

Honestly, given how the market played out, would a 4 year deal to Carlos Pena for 40 been a bad move? I dunno....that could have been and interesting move. But remember...it's the Al Lefties the O's were trying to address.

This started from your comments about how Andy is the same. He's not. He's doing some things differently (free agency, trades for youth, "projects", Spring Training facility, Draft & development) and some things are in fact the same (Winning, Scouting).

I get it, there's room for improvement. But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are improvement's.

Same resutls. Different path.

YES,

Jeremy came through for my Fantasy team today. 7 inn, 0 runs, .085 whip and it even came with a W. For being on such a bad team, this guy's a stud.

Weiters also has been on fire for me... another 2 hits tonight.

Awesome guys......

What is the book on Snyder? Is this guy a legitmate candidate as a first baseman of the future or is he simply all we have right now?

Gotta love this team. This will be a fun summer.
Got to send some kudos out to whoever is the head of pro scouting is also.
These Macphails probably all have a couple more World Series Titles in them.
I think it's great that Andy's nephew gets a chance to work with his very accomlpished uncle.
Isn't this some kind of new thing. I mean who ever heard of someone that's related working for the same company.
Next thing I'll find out is it snows in Buffalo in the winter.

IT SNOWS IN BUFFALO IN THE WINTER>.....

got it

Can someone get this idiot smitty off the blog? What a joke he is. Not only does he come off as a complete clown, he may be the most unintelligent poster this blog has ever seen.

smitty, no one minds when someone is a true Oriole fan. But when you come off so crazy, you ruin the credibility of anyone who truly follows and cares about the team.

Gils points about Andy's nephew are so on the money, it's not even debatable. The guy has never done anything. And his claim to fame is working with an uncle who given us awful baseball 4 of the last 13 years?

You're a blowhard smitty. Your information is always useless. Useless because you make a fool of yourself, each and every day.

Thanks Tim,
I hope you at least enjoyed the W today. We've had a rough time coming by them lately.
I don't know though. Your idea of getting me "off the blog" seems kind of Marxist to me? You a supporter of Chavez by any chance. Not to get into politics, but man.
Don't care much for that old free expression idea eh Tim?
Gil's opinions are just that. So are mine. Feel free to ignore....
and if you can't tell the difference between serious and kidding I can't help you there.

I have to admit smitty, you really no longer make any sense. I will stand by this team through thick and thin, but no one can defend the pro scouting. Hardy has done a solid job, but he's still missed more games than he has played.

Vlad is ok, but in reality, he's an over paid clean up hitter who has 16 rbi's, and will probably be on the team for one season. The rest are bust, added to the bust from last season, and during most of Andy's tenure.

Andy has accomplished good things in the game of baseball. But so did many fine baseball men in the 1980's. It doesn't automatically mean they should be in important positions in 2011.

I don't know smitty. Maybe if you just backed up the things you say instead of always being about hyperbole and being over the top, maybe people would take you more seriously.

So When is a batter on the other team gonna dive in the dirt to avoid a "pitch that got away from me"

or don't we do that any more?

As Paul Simon would say....
"Where have you gone Bob Gibson?"

Thanks jc....but everything on here is simply speculation and opinion. If I wanted to be "taken seriously" I would get a job writing warning labels on the back of the boxes of children's medicine.

@ Sean & JC

Vlad's still hitting for average, but the power is gone. Vlad is ok, but in reality, he's an over paid clean up hitter who has 16 rbi's,

I don't agree. I think Vladdy has changed his approach, because the hitters in front of him haven't been getting on. So instead of hitting flyballs, he's been making good contact and hitting singles and doubles. Once the hitters in front of him start hitting, then you're going to see more power from Vladdy. I guarantee it!

Buck Showalter said he was going to the hall of fame today in his post game conference. I tend to agree. Vladdy is an exceptional hitter. I am glad that we have him. He gives us consistency!
Also, I love his approach in the batter's box. Stomps his feet, adjusts his helmet, wiggles, and swings the bat. I love it takes like 5 seconds for him to be ready. Love it!

Anyway, moving right along big day for Chris Tillman tomorrow. I would like to see another solid outing. I think he can do it and I look forward to watching him do so!

Squirrel,

I don't agree. When it comes to Oriole hitters, there's always an excuse. No one ever on base for him. They're not pitching to him. We hear this stuff every year.

Believe me though, Vlad is not the problem. I wish they were all hitting like Vlad in fact. That's a more a statement of how horrible most of the other guys have been though.

The important point is we know he likely won't be here next season, and the players Andy and his relative keep bring in are just weak, especially when you consider everyone they've brought in over the years.

jc..
Thanks again. Now I know what is the "important point". It's not the important point how he produces this year....no, the "important point" is "likely won't be hear next season".
good now I can forget about this year and start wondering weather we will re sign Vlad.
Hardy might not be here either. Is that the "imortant point"? or can I just enjoy watching him play as a secondary point?

Thanks jc for your very "important points". I thought we were just going to see how Vlad did this year as "important point" 1. But I see that's not the "important point". That would be that he might not be here next year.
Hardy might not be here either. Can I just enjoy watching him play? Or do I have to worry about a "more important point" regarding his tenure here?
Signed
Hopeful fan in Balto

P.S. If I am really Andy's nephew and one of my cousins is Director of scouting, should I be critical of my flesh and blood?
Any "important points" would be welcome.

You've got to love how smitty riles up the realists as much as wayne riles up the optimists.

Cool off, Tim. It's only a blog. Try to relax a bit.

Fun game tonight. Hope everyone enjoyed it!

I expect the Orioles to win today, making it 2 of 3. What we got from the 17-5 whipping though was more than any series. The team received tremendous national exposure, and we as Nat fans enjoyed rooting for the team that embarrassed for once.

The Nats are going nowhere this year, but at least we know that. Oriole fans though, always think they're going somewhere, and it's sad. Maybe it's the long history of the team. All I know is, 13 years is the new history of the team.

The Nats have hope for the future. The organization attempts to put a solid product on the field and we as fans appreciate that. I just don't know what it is Oriole fans appreciate any more aside from a few players here and there.

Good luck the rest of the season.

not brooks, But at least wayne is a millions times closer to the truth than smitty is. smitty literally ruins it for anyone else who attempts to back the Orioles. Being extremely positive is great. But when you're always on the wrong side of the facts, you just come off as a stupid person.

But you're right, it is just a Blog and I shouldn't let him get to me. Notice how his response to me is that I'm also other people by the way. I love when people do that, as if it makes a difference. And I love that I'm also jc. That guy's as much a jerk as smitty. Whatever.

I love how people resort to name calling.

Name calling is not an argument.

It's the conceding of any argument.

"2 + 2 = 4"

"2 + 2 doesn't equal 4....you stupid person."

Thanks for keeping it stimulating.

Someone please remind me....what was the only thing Andy did?

Oh yeah, the Bedard trade. Buck was hired by Nick Markakis, the guy who's over paid. Vald is a washed up past his prime player. B-Rob is a hypochondriac, and Britton is "prospect" which means nothing and is just another O's pitcher that isn't a Cliff Lee.

Yeah...smitty, you're the stupid idiot. Liking the Orioles is NOT what Orioles fans do. You jerk face. lol.

There's a big difference between an eternal optimist and a stupid person.

And, honestly, I don't think smitty believes a lot of the stuff he writes. In a way, he's just like wayne, except smitty's on the other side of the aisle. He goes way over the top just to aggravate the people who aggravate him.

One more thing: Who's the bigger jerk? The guy who annoys people with his eternal optimism or the guy who calls the eternal optimist stupid just because he disagrees?

Just a thought...

Here's one thing we can all agree on with anyone calling anyone else stupid: Let's go O's!

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
