One more tribute to William Donald Schaefer
If you get a chance, check out my column on the passing to Maryland political icon William Donald Schaefer. I realize that better journalists have weighed in on his amazing career as mayor of Baltimore and governor or Maryland (not to mention stints in the city council and as state comptroller), but I thought I'd focus more on his impact on Baltimore as a sports town.
He was a complex man who had his warts, but no one can deny that he was one of the most important political figures in the history of Maryland. And no one can deny the role he played in the construction of the Camden Yards sports complex.
Here's my take, which will be in tomorrow's print edition of the Sun and on the Web site right here.

nice article, Pete.
He was a Baltimore Original and many people, myself included saw in him many of the only-if-you're-from-here-can-you-really-appreciate-it style aspects of his character.
The good Mayor taught this lifelong county resident to be proud of the city and embrace it as my own.

Not a bad tribute, Pete, and there's no doubt WDS did many exciting things, but it's a tad annoying for many natives that some get so carried away with the Inner Harbor landmarks that they make it sound or imply that "Baltimore was nothing before the Inner Harbor was rebuilt". Not to dwell on attitudes from over 30 years ago, but if the 1979 Angels (or any other AL team from that time) had the mindset that "there wasn't any reason to leave Cross Keys other than to go to Memorial Stadium" -- well, their perceptions were simply wrong.

Great piece on WDS. I think he was at the center of the biggest event in the sports world in the last 50 years. When the Colts moved it caused many dominoes to fall and a construction boom that lasted 15 years across all sports. One can only wonder what would have happened if the Colts didn't move.
