Bring on the Steelers
The NFL just released the 2011 regular season schedule and the Ravens open at home against the evil Steelers, which will be their third meaningful game against Pittsburgh in their last eight games (including playoffs). It might be even more meaningful, however, if the lockout clips off the first game of the season and it has to be moved to the end of the schedule.
I suspected that might be the reason for the imediate showdown, but a quick scan of the other schedules did not reveal a pattern of divisional season openers. If such a conspiracy was in play, you'd think the Jets would open against the Patriots and the Cowboys would open against the Giants or Eagles.
There are some interesting openers. The Saints will play the NFL champion Packers in the Thursday night opener; the Giants will travel to Washington; and the Jets will open against the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
I'm pretty sure the season will start on time, anyway. Based on my experience covering many baseball negotiations, I suspect the NFL labor dispute will get settled about a week after training camps are supposed to open.

Let me start off by saying I'm a huge Ravens fan. I'm not one of those fools that think Ozzie is the worst GM of all time or that Harbaugh is a terrible coach (as if somehow him being the coach for 3 years and making the playoffs three years in a row is some sort of coincidence). But I have no faith in the Ravens to beat Roethlisberger (or Manning for that matter). I pray every time that they will beat them, and I get sucked into believing they'll end up victorious during each game. But until they actually win that game, I refuse to believe it will happen.

What an amazing schedule. 5 prime time games... Hey Couch Coach. The Steelers didn't even make the playoffs 2 years ago. The Ravens went deeper in the playoffs the past 2 season than the Colts. You're a moron.
The Ravens season can't begin too soon. Anything to get peoples minds off the dreaded Orioles.

Has anyone been to pittsburgh? Has anyone seen why players hate to live in pittsburgh? Ever seen a modern day steeler admit they love to live there? Never happens.
Baltimore's nothing to brag about, but at least the surrounding area's are terrific. Pitts surrounding area's are backwoods and worse. It's really that bad folks.
Pitts beat the Ravens last year. That's correct. The previous year though, Pitt doesn't even make the playoff's, only to whine for months that they were robbed.
Have you ever seen the fans in the baltimore area who root for Pitts? Says everything you really need to know.
This is all Sidd has. It's his life. Let him have it and his qb who by the way... hates it in Pittsburgh. Even everyone in that town knows it. How sad is that for them knowing that even their qb, the face of the organization, hates where he plays?
I understand Sidd. I really do.

bf, I appreciate your passion. As a native of Pittsburgh who relocated to Maryland 10 years ago I can tell you that both areas are fantastic places to be from. I am one of these Steeler fans you talk about living in the area. I have to say that I really enjoy Ravens fans and there passion for football and never quite understand the stray fan that needs to drag comments unrelated to football into the equation. Pittsburgh is often named as a most livable city in the US and many Steelers players reside there and give back to the community long after retirement. You have a great team bf and would be best served to focus positively on the Ravens. I just hope we have a season opener on 9/11 so our teams can start the NFL off in real Ravens/steelers style. May the best team win.

@Phebs,
There is a lot of truth to what bf wrote about.
And of course there is a lot of truth in what you wrote about. Nothing is cut and dry. You sure are the exception to the Pittsburgh trolls we see on Baltimore sports forums.
I think most of us treat Steeler fans with respect when they come to our stadium, but I'm afraid I can't say the same about going to Heinz field. Personally, I think that has to do with the level of fan emancipation.
Most of Ravens fans don't come from the city of Baltimore, but rather from the surrounding areas. I'm sure it is the same in Pittsburgh.
Although, Pittsburgh is one of the areas of the country filled with prestigious academic institutions, the level of education of people living in and around Pittsburgh, leaves much te be desired. And most Steeler fans are blue collar and not well educated. And it shows when you attend an NFL game in Pittsburgh, and the way they treat you. It's hard not to be biased about Pittsburgh fans if you are a Ravens fan who's been to Pittsburgh for Ravens vs. Steelers.
And most Pittsburgh fans in the Baltimore area, are Yankee fans and Laker fans too. I have never met a Steeler fan who is a Pirate fan, but 90+ % of Ravens fans are also Oriole fans.
I think you and I can have a few beers and get along just fine talking Steeler Raven football, but as I said, you're the exception and not the norm.
If you go to M&T to watch games, you will find that in general Ravens fans are very tolerant compared to other NFL fans. And if you've seen Ravens fans in Pittsburgh, you will know that they are less obnoxious than Steeler fans in Baltimore.

It's a shame that Raven fans show so little respect for the game. Why in the world can't you just enjoy the game for what it is - two great teams playing great football. I have found very few, if any Raven fans who are educated enough to discuss the game. The Steeler fans coming to your stadium are not treated with respect - We sit there and try to watch a great game and have to put up with morons yelling in our ears and throwing food at us.
It always amazes me at the misconceptions people have about Pittsburgh and the fans. Pittsburgh is consistently rated one of the Top 10 cities to live in. 75% of the people living in the area and the majority of the Steeler fans have a degree, the "blue collar" days are from the 90's, so please let it go.
Pittsburgh is not a dirty steel mill city any longer - perhaps you have not had the pleasure of being shown the city to enjoy what it has to offer. And the majority of the players from hockey, baseball and football live in Pittsburgh year round and are very involved.

Gary, BS. Bf is correct. Ben hates Piits and anyone listening to him knows that's the truth. I too have spent al lot of time in Pittsburgh. It is so not the place you describe. Calling it depressing would be an understatement. He's also correct about the surrounding area's. They don't have your Howard county, Eastern shore area's. It's truly a depressing place. One better understands how the Steelers are their (your) entire lives.

@Gary,
I had an immediate family member who lived Oakmont PA (right outside of Pittsburgh) for 4 years and I visited 3-4 times a year. I have been to Heinz field for Ravens games. I have seen/experienced the ignorance and lack of education first hand. Granted my opinions are shaped by my experiences, but I'm not the only one who feels that way. There are Ravens fans who are jerks as well.
And that family member I'm talking about holds advanced degrees and had a six figures managing job for one of the biggest companies in Pittsburgh, and coulnd't wait to get out of there.
This is not a knock on the Western PA area or its folks. It's just the truth. When I make the trip from Maryland to Western PA, I see an area that looks like they're 20 years behind in every aspect. It also appears that people have too. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the economy. Property taxes in Allegany county have not increased in 10 years! What does that tell you about the prospect of the economy, education and jobs in and around Pittsburgh.
The truth hurts. Nobody is saying Baltimore is better. We're just sharing our personal experiences. You're welcomed to share yours.
I'm sure there are people here who think I'm full of BS and others who agree with what I say. That's life.

How 'bout dem O's, hon? Bad pitching or are the slumbering bats of OPACY finally waking up?
Posted by: JohnBoy | April 20, 2011 11:49 AM
Ever wonder why Steeler fans travel so well? Actually, they don't. The first chance they get, they relocate. That's why they are all over.
Posted by: Gil | April 20, 2011 2:40 PM
well said , Gil
Not only they leave their home city , but they travel all over other cities/teams websites . LOL
Go Ravens
Posted by: allan | April 21, 2011 7:54 AM
Since this isn't about the orioles I won't mention the closer and how he should be sacked, however Larry, dem O's aint dreaded, they needed. Good win for the O's both on Thurs and Wednesday.
Sorry Pete, no one cares who the Ravens play first, just as long as they beat Pburgh and everyone else.
Gil, you called it, any young person (including football players) would not want to live full time in Pburgh. Their fans are proud though, and they do not have the same stigma as Red Sox fans or Yankees fans who are from Boondocks, North Carolina or Bourbon, Kentucky, most Steelers fans are from there, they just leave.
Did I forget the yankees fans from Delaware?
Posted by: G2 | April 21, 2011 8:47 AM
@G2,
I beg to differ. Most Steeler fans in the Baltimore area may be from Pittsburgh or surrounding areas, because Maryland was a logical choice for a lot of them to migrate to. However, thousands of Steeler fans at the Colosseum when they play the Raiders, can't all be from Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is not a big city and the population surrounding it is not that huge. They're like Yankee and Redsox fans. They're everywhere. There is only one explanation for that: Band Wagon. But that's what winning does.
I've sat next to Steeler fans at M&T who thought that Byron Leftwich plays for the Jaguars. That should tell you something.

There are also many fans in the area who picked Piits to root for after the colts left. Then when the Ravens arrived, they stayed with the Steelers.
Now think about that. You live in or near Baltimore, you get an NFL team, yet you don't change your allegiance when you do get a team. What kind of person does that?
I became a 49'ers fan when the Cots left. I still like them. But when the Ravens arrived, they immediately became my team of choice. That's what normal people do. That's what you do if you're proud of the area where you live.
Those that stayed Steeler fans are just strange. They're the stubborn type who likely beats their wife or neglects their children. They think it's cool to be different.
They're usually very lonely people who have no family and few friends. They do however, have their pick up trucks with their Steelers sticker on the bumper.
And they also come onto to Blogs about the Ravens. This is what they have. This is who they are. Feel sad for these people. Very sad.

@bf
5 points
1. At least I have a real name
2. Boy that loss hurts you a lot..oops. never seen a championship team allowing such a big lead evaporate and you know that beating Steelers without Ben isn't the same which is exactly you did in 2009 at your home game. We missed playoffs because we lost to KC,Oak with deplted secondary not because of you. When Ben played..he kicked your butt.(mason dropped a TD in end zone)
plus going to playoffs and not even going to SB does not really count as a successful season although I do give ravens of 2009 a lot of credit for beating Pats (believe it or not, I was rooting against Pats). Oh did I mention, when we played you in playoffs, we kicked your butt 10 and 08 (Picked off Polamalu)
3. So what if there are steelers fans in MD/VA..From experience most of them moved here because steel mines closed in 80s and circumstances made them to move. Why should that make us Ravens fans. We might (hello no never) do that if steelers leave Pittsburgh but until that happens, we are Steelers fans and if that bothers you well just leave with it.
4.Forgot to mention that 3rd and 10 catch by Hines Ward which kept the drive alive
5. Ravens have a good team who can challenge Steelers but until they do that accept that Steelers have a clutch QB, Great defense and HOF WR who makes clutch catches and overall more playmakers who thrive under pressure
