O's: Kickoff countdown
The lineup for today's Grapefruit League opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates features J.J. Hardy in the leadoff slot, Felix Pie second and Mark Reynolds batting third. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you'll never see that combination during the regular season.
Brian Roberts was never scheduled to play in the road opener at McKechnie Field, so draw no conclusions from that. Nick Markakis rolled into the clubhouse this morning on skate shoes, so he's obviously fine. The regulars don't make a lot of spring road trips, but we've been told that designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero wants to play a lot. He'll make his Orioles debut in the cleanup spot, followed by Adam Jones and Nolan Reimold. The wind is blowing out hard to left, so I'm predicting Reynolds hits three pop ups and drives in six runs.
Brandon Snyder gets a chance to make a good first impression at first base, since it will be a few days before Derrek Lee makes his O's spring debut.
Today's crappy cellphone photo is of the home plate area of McKechnie Field in Bradenton, one of the truly historic spring training ballparks.
Instant update: The O's are off to a good start. Felix Pie just sliced a double over third base. moved over to third on a groundout by Reynolds and scored on an infield hit by Guerrero. If you recall, Guerrero had two infield hits in the intrasquad game, but this was no seeing-eye grounder. He hit a shot to the right of Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez and he barely knocked it down to keep in on the infield. I'm not doing inning updates, but thought you'd like to hear about Guerrero's first Orioles RBI and the long home run Nolan Reimold just hit to lead off the second.

Hey, Petey. So, you don't think that the regulars were willing to make this "road trip" had anything to do with the fact that it couldn't have been much more than a 25 minute ride, even on a rickety old yellow school bus, do you? Let's see who wants to go to (horrors) Tampa or Port St. Lucie. Good news about Nolan. Hope he turns some heads this Spring. Check out Primos by the airport on the Trail. Good, casual Italian.

Hey Wayne....notice that Reynolds moved the runner over with a groundout to 2nd? Sure, its early, but your recent diatribes indicated you felt that this was an impossibility! Rationalize THAT in your warped way, pal!
Pete....seriously, I'm "free speech" and all, but is there any way you could make Wayne go away?

Matt,
That may have been one of the best post in a long, long while.
Matt my boy, I never said that Markie Mark won't accidently move a runner over from time to time. Heck, over the course of 600 or so bats, even smitty could accomplish such a feat...
But I'm glad you noticed.... and happy that you'll be watching to see if he improves in this area over the course of this season.
By the way Matt...... Thanks for the double post.... Twice is always nice.
JohnBoy,
Hmmmm.... I wonder who you are? You're not new, so I wonder which other name you go by.
Anyway, thanks for posting from Field of Dreams. Even though I've heard it a thousand times, it's impossible to read those words without getting goosebumps.... if you're a real baseball fan that is.
Thanks again....

Post game notes:
The official scorer changed his ruling on the Reynolds groundout to 2nd. He ruled it to be a strikeout.
Wayne, I must be getting to you. Do you really have to mention me no matter what the subject of your your post is?
Actually you only say a couple things over and over again....and you do spell my name right..so there is that
I know the clock is ticking on your pretending to be an O's fan and I still say at 15 games over .500 you pull a Houdini.
So enjoy being a fake fan for a little longer and I hope your beloved Red Sox can't even play 500 against us this year.
I still can't believe they couldn't do better than that last year considering how awful that team was that AM assembled.
I wonder who will get to their 3rd World Series first? theo or andy?
you know who I'm going with..
Did you know Theo won his first World Series before Twitter?.... so I don't think that should count.

Wayne, you make me chuckle No conspiracy here-- just a long time reader and occasional poster-- when I think I've anything to say that people might like. No alter ego here. But you're right, I go back every Spring and read that little speech from Field of Dreams just to remind myself that it's not all about money and contracts and business. It's a game. Now, if we throw in George Carlin's little bit comparing baseball and football, and Abbot and Costello's "Who's On First", we have a trifecta. Enjoy the real first day of Spring, everybody. O's win, O's win, the OO-rr-ii-oo-ll-ee-s WIN!!

smit ole buddy ole pal....
Does it really matter that the O's played well against the sox last year? Really? That's a win for you?
I bet you've always come in at the back of the pack, in whatever you've done. I mean you get the biggest kick out of the most meaningless stuff.
But ok...... the O's played good against the Sox last year. I don't know that for a fact, but I'll take your word for it.
I'll be sure to bring it up to the dude that likes to sit behind me when the Sox come to town. Being that their fans completely take over our stadium, I'll see if it makes him mad. Hope so....
JohnBoy,
I like your style.

Go figure. Never occurred to me. Wayne isn't an Orioles fan. It was a tender moment for me when he referenced "our stadium" in his last post. She's slipping away Wayne; your loyalty is waning. Crucified on an AM cross. Here's wishing Buck and Co. some luck. Meanwhile, Wayne becomes another Orioles expat in the ever-expanding, knows-no-boundary Red Sox Nation. Go O's. More from the die hards; less from the blow hards. This is still my diversion, not my job.

Wayne, you really are a petty little man. Too bad you consider yourself an O's fan, we really don't need your type.

@Matt,
"Pete....seriously, I'm "free speech" and all, but is there any way you could make Wayne go away?"
--
... seriously, I think you're for selective free speech, or "free speech" as you call it. The kind of speech that is "free" as in agreeing with you "free".
And thankfully, being an O's fan is not some sort of country club membership, that you and others decide who to let in or out.
What's the matter? A little doze of reality hinders your eternal happy and optimistic personality? You really can't handle reading what Wayne says, whether you agree with him or not? Fine. But don't act like you belong here and he doesn't.

I know I heard this sentiment articulated before somewhere, and it fits this blog: every time I read Wayne and his apologists, I get a whole lot dumber.

Matt,
you are the funniest guy on the blog. I swear, I can't stop laughing. I have just never heard that before. I bet you have stopped Wayne in his tracks. You should be doing night clubs or even snl. I can't stand it. I'm just laughing so hard right now. Please no more. I can't take anyore
