Schmuck: Too busy to blog?
If you didn't see me around yesterday, it wasn't because I was lying around ignoring the blog. The Schmuck still stops here, but Monday was a pretty busy day for the Baltimore Sun Sports department.
We had to dig up the latest developments on the Alfredo Simon case -- and Dan Connolly and Nick Madigan are doing a great job of that -- and there were the other small matters of the University of Maryland introducing the new Terps head football coach and the Ravens beginning to prepare for Sunday's playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Which is why I actually had two columns in today's print edition. Check out my take on the Randy Edsall hiring right here, and -- if you're not tired after that -- you can read my column here on why the Ravens caught a big break when they drew the Chiefs in the Wild Card round.
It isn't easy to be such a tireless workhorse, but I make up for it with my modest and humble nature.

it is a shame alfredo simon got himself into real peck of trouble, but i have to ask why he had a gun at the party. that might be a hard queston to get answered. i don't think it makes any difference who the maryland hires for football coaxh as for the matter who they have for basketball coach.maryland is like the orioles, they can't get the top of the line players. yes the ravens did get a very large break in not havng to play the colts. i believe the colts would blow the ravens away. i would like to see the ravens beat the chiefs, but i do not see that happening.

Maryland's treatment of the Fridge ended up looking messy. But Debbie Yow created a terrible situation with the whole "coach in waiting thing".
It was going to end ugly if Ralph got to the end of his contract and wanted an extension. Which he did!
It was going to end ugly if Franklin left and started recuiting Friegden's staff. Which he did!
Unless Anderson wanted to make his first big move to enshrine Ralph Friegden with "Joe Pa Coach for Life" status. The end was going to be an ugly divorce, and it was.
What's getting missed in all of the feelings of "The Fridge got screwed". is that Maryland just may have gotten the right guy for the job.
If Mike Leach would have come on board the offense would have gotten a complete make over, much like Michigan a few years ago going to the spread. Forgotten in the talk about Leach's system is the fact that many of Maryland's current players and those that have already vebally commited to MD would have been looking for another school.
Edsall's a program builder and he's had U Conn on a steady upward path for years. He sure came accross as a no nonsense guy who put the players at ease from the start.
If Anderson is a smart man he'll find a way to ease Ralph's pain. Edsall the builder can now start building on the solid foundation that Ralph Friegden left.
I hope Mike Leach can find his way back into coaching. He deserves to clear his name of the whole James thing and return to being one of the nation's top college football minds.
But if MD hired him and Mack Brown died suddenly, how long do you think it would have taken Leach to be on a plane to Texas?

Not a lot has changed..check it out for yourself
"Seriously,
This is what this team has come to? Duh, what do I mean 'come to'?
Picture Iverson when he talked about 'practice'.......... 'were talking about Hendrickson, not a real player.......but Henderson. Not a player, not a player.........but Hedrickson'
It gets more pathetic each day - knowing how bad this team is going to be yet again. It just never ends!"

wowowowowow,
I've been away for a day, and LOOK, wayne is all over the place.
This is my first post in a bit guys..... that's fine, as the one who comes on as me loves the attention.
Imagine you're him. No one ever responds to his real handle. But when he use's mine, he get all kinds of reaction. It's his new life....albeit living through someone else.... but it still works for him.
I have literally helped make someone else's life better and more worthwhile.
To the O's.....
I have no problem with the signing of Gregg. Nor do I have an issue with Reynolds, Hardy or Lee......
My problem is with the collection of new acquisitions. Collectively, they're projects, rentals......and most of all..... they're the cheapest players AM could get.
You all will spin it your way, and that's fine. The FACT is, AM loses baseball games more than anyone else has in over 20 years.
And one of the reasons AM loses is due to the acquisitions he makes. Historically (and especially since being with the O's), they're the worst acquisitions in the game... year after year after year....
Just look it up folks.
And hey impostor wayne.... THANK YOU for reposting my post from 1/4/10. As I was correct that day, I have been correct every day since.
I forgot about that post.. I love it when you remind me how right I've been. Some people are all talk....
You're proving how thoroughly correct my post really are.
Thank you!

Pete's reply: This is pretty amazing. I have the ability to identify the posters here and even I've lost track of who is the "real" Wayne. What would be really nice is if everyone who posted on this blog actually had enough pride to identify themselves in some discernable way, like Waspman or European Prof. I know who those guys are and they stand behind what they write here, which is refreshing and enjoyable. I'll say the same for bob, who almost never agrees with me and probably has ripped me more than anybody else here over the past three years, but he stands behind what he writes, so I respect that and appreciate his participation. The "real" wayne stays anonymous, but I know where to email him. The whole rotating identities thing has gotten really tired. This is supposed to be a forum to talk sports, hopefully in an intelligent way, not a place for a bunch of bitter, anonymous people take their frustrations out on each other.

@wayne
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every way.
I can't wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better loking each day.
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
but I'm doing the best that I can.
I used to have a girlfriend
but she just couldn't compete
with all of these love starved women
who keep clamoring at my feet.
Well I prob'ly could find me another
but I guess they're all in awe of me.
Who cares, I never get lonesome
cause I treasure my own company.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every way,
I can't wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
but I'm doing the best that I can.
I guess you could say I'm a loner,
a cowboy outlaw tough and proud.
I could have lots of friends if I want to
but then I wouldn't stand out from the crowd.
Some folks say that I'm egotistical.
Hell, I don't even know what that means.
I guess it has something to do with the way that I
fill out my skin tight blue jeans.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
when you're perfect in every way,
I can't wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
but I'm doing the best that I can.
We're doing the best that we can

Pete:
As a president of the BWAA, I wanted to pick your brain on the PED's and HOF voting.
Without full knowledge of who did what, and how much, for how long, how can writers begin to try and untangle this. There is a massive knowledge deficit the writers are faced with, and pretending to know who was a HOFer before use vs. after is rather...rash.
To me, with the lack of clear facts, there are only 2 options. Either they all go in, regardless, or none go in at all.
Watching a debate about all these players as writers try and rationalize this players or that players performance and actual/rumored/believed use of PED's is laughable. Are writers doing their due diligence and becoming Chemistry PHD's to get a better understanding of the strength's and weaknesses of various PED's used over a 20 year period of time. And how each individuals biology can affect the effectiveness of the PED's?
If Raffy used once, and A-Rod used daily his whole career...is there a difference? Can the writers really know the difference?
I think it needs to be an "all-in" or "all-out" type of thing. Anything other than that, and players will be adversely effected. Some guys that maybe used once will be kept out, but players that hide their very regular use get in.
Thoughts? (afterall...it's gonna be 20+ years of this debate, I'm just trying to understand this now as opposed to pulling my hair out over the 20 + years where the standards even on this topic will likely shift...and thus be inconsistent. And thus even more irritating).

paulie
The standard is whatever the individuals on the BWAA make it. Even when it comes to stats, you have your old school-types and the newer saber stat-types. It's not cut and dry and it never will be. There's no real criteria.
If I had a vote, I'd vote in Bobby Grich every single year. Log on to baseball-reference.com and you'll see that he was the best defensive 2nd baseman of his era and supported that with a solid bat. But because he didn't put up those sexy stats, he'll never get the recoginition he deserves and will probably always be in obsurity.
The same goes with the PED debate. Eventually, someone will have to be voted in. My gut tells me Barry Bonds,-eventually- for obvious reasons, but who knows. What the voters need to determine is 'who was the best in the steriod era?' and vote fairly.
I see it as a big popularity contest and will always carry controversy. Palmeiro has my vote if I had one, and so will Bonds. Also, outside the PED era, Tim Raines needs more recoginition.
