Ravens: Looking ahead
With Steve Bisciotti, Dick Cass, Ozzie Newsome and John Harbaugh on the dais and dozens of reporters firing questions, there was a lot of ground covered during the course of the Ravens' season wrapup news conference.
One of the headlines to come out of it will surely be Cass's announcement that the Ravens will not -- as they usually do every other year -- raise season ticket prices this year. Cass cited the uncertainty about the labor situation and also said that season ticket funds will not be used for club operations during a potential work stoppage. The money will be kept separate and fans will get it back with interest for any games not played because of a strike or lockout.
Cass also said that, unlike some NFL clubs, the Ravens will not lay off any employees in the event of a work stoppage. Employees may, however, have some pay reduction associated with a work stoppage, but will get any reduction refunded if the full season is played.
There were no great revelations about the labor situation, because Bisciotti and his fellow owners are under something of a gag order.
"I want to keep my money,'' Bisciotti laughed, "and Roger (Goodell) wants to take my money."
On the personnel front, Bisciotti made it clear that he would give Harbaugh a contract extension, probably finalizing it in the next couple of weeks. Newsome confirmed that Haloti Ngata's free agent status is a top priority, but the labor uncertainty may make it difficult to get a deal done before a decision is made by the NFL whether to lock the players out in March.
If you want to hear from the brain trust on Joe Flacco's progress this season, you'll have to wait a few hours for Jamison Hensley's story on the subject. The Sun had its entire football staff mobilized for the news conference, so look for several stories on the state of the franchise in the print edition and here on the Web site.

I'm a Steelers fan, but the way I see the Ravens' issues is that the problem with the Ravens can be summed up with "Quarterback Curse". What other team, after winning the Super Bowl, dumped their quarterback? After dumping Dilfer, the Ravens haven't done much on the offensive side. While Dilfer wasn't the best quarterback, he was the quarterback. The QB is the face of the team...so what do the Ravens do...they got rid of him and look at their QB situation since. Brian Billick, who was supposed to be this great QB finder, bombed. The QB position became a revolving door. While Flacco is good, he's still not getting the job done and it's not all his fault.
Blame it on the Quarterback Curse. Apologize to Dilfer for letting him go after winning the Super Bowl. Admit they should have given him at least one more year to prove himself. Maybe that will break the Quarterback Curse.

Is it just me or did anyone else stay in their house for two days following our loss to the Steelers? Not only was I frustrated, let down, and extremely depressed, but also furious at any person wearing Steeler memorabilia.
By the way, I haven't watched ESPN or any sport program since the loss and will only visit the Baltimore Sun to read information about our Ravens. I do not have any interest in postseason play in the NFL. Knowing the lucky, always getting ref call Steelers, and our new rivaled Jets are fighting for the AFC championship just makes twice as bitter. I love my Ravens and can only hope all the guys stick together for next year. I know Ray, Ed, and Flacco can lead them to the championship next year. As a loyal fan, I will always represent you, like wearing my Flacco jersey and Raven hat in the middle of Penn Station when the Jets fans are coming home from a home game. Team, please stick together and lets get that ring next year.
I always have and always will look forward to reading articles on the Sun, watching the John Harbaugh show, and GAME DAY on Sundays! Now step your game up and lock and load for next year!

Well J, the only point on which we are similar is I could not speak well of this game - when I could speak of it. I'm still bitter. I hate the Steelers more than ever - if that's even possible - and refuse to watch them play in the playoffs. But re-hiring Cam Cameron is inexcuseable. That I cannot accept. Of course I hope the Ravens do well next year, but they will fail again in the playoffs( if they have playoffs next year). As for the Jets - I hope they beat the Steelers. I hope they win the Super Bowl. Would that not prove that Rex was always a better option than our current defensive coordinator? I believe that it would. Yes Mattison of the "Rush 3 guys on Big Ben on 3rd and 20. Give him all of the time in the world. Do not force him to punt the football. Do not give the Ravens offense 2 minutes to win the game with a field goal". There were obviously physical mistakes made in this game - but the worst coaching mistake was made by Mattison by going soft on Roethelsburger on 3rd and 20. The game on the line, tied 24-24, and the Ravens with one great chance to win it with a field goal. That was the worst mistake of the game. Yeah, I know Cameron only delivered 28 yards of offense in the second half. But the soft rush on Big Ben was worse.

Firesale, I could not agree with you more. Adding towards your opinion of the Steelers, I won't even watch the game because I refuse to watch those bums. It will take me til the Super Bowl to get over the loss (as long as the Steelers are not in and an NFC team wins it all).
As for the coaching, at first I was displeased with the re-hiring of Cam Cameron. I now find that judgment to be to impulsive and realize the blame is more than just him. The offense was trying to find an identity all year. I don't think an offense should be labeled a "run team" or a "pass team", instead simply "effective" or "non-effective". Play calling should depend on the defense you're matched up against and what your team finds successful. Now that we have all of these great backs and receivers, Cam should really bare down and study/prepare for the next season. He did a great job in San Diego. The reason why Flacco didn't take a lot of shots down-field is because Cam built his playbook off a short-pass game he designed when Rivers was at the helm. I truly believe, if memory serves me right, that Rivers was only comfortable with short-field passing (in his early years) and that was effective/successful for him. I know this sounds extremely "out-there" but I think he tried to apply that same philosophy with young Flacco. Maybe it was suppose to help further Flacco in getting comfortable throwing the ball in the NFL.
As for Mattison, he's gone so lets not even worry about his idiotic 3 man rush schemes. As for the play where Ben just literally threw the ball up and Brown (I think that was his name) caught it, that was a mental mistake by our defense. There is nothing more frustrating than mental errors! The new guy Pagano we got sounds awesome. We need a defensive coordinator on that sideline with that fire and compassion. Rex leaving sucked but I trust our staff to know what is best. I truly believe our players have found an identity after that loss, and its "unity". Offense, defense, coaches all had physical and mental errors during that game and now have realized they all need to step up and be accountable. A team needs to play well in all phases of a game to win the Super Bowl, something we struggled with all year. Next year we need to play as a harmonic unit, one voice...or as Randy Moss says "One Clap."

Mattison on going to Michigan: "Best decision I’ve ever made"...He made this decision before the season was over, that's why he left so quickly. This has never happened to the Ravens before. Personnel has left, but only to move up or they were asked to leave. What other stories are going on that we are not being told?...
J...Cam Cameron is a disciple of " Air Coryell." That is an offense that is designed to stretch the field. The "short-pass" game you are referring to is the West Coast offense. So you have an OC that comes from 1 school, and a QB Coach (Zorn) from another school. No wonder Joe has no idea what is going on. Cam Cameron is coaching the same way he did in SD, with similar results. Drew Brees is there his potential is not realized, leaves and gets with a solid offensive mind (Sean Peyton) and wins a Super Bowl. Philip Rivers comes in and team consistently does not meet their goals. Great personnel, 'good' results, and then ultimate self-destruct' in the playoffs under conservative Marty S... All UNDERACHIEVING Squads...Does all this sound/look familiar? It should make any TRUE Raven fan EXTREMELY nervous.
