Military Bowl: Fridge's fine farewell

If you read me regularly or listen to me talking sports on WBAL, you know that I've been highly critical of the NCAA and the bowl selection system -- particularly in regard to the way Maryland was dropped to the bottom of the bowl pecking order in the ACC.

My feelings haven't changed, but I'll have to admit that the soft matchup for Maryland created a nice opportunity for Ralph Friedgen to go out on a very high note. The Terps started off a little slow, but they took the ECU defense apart in the second half on the way to a very lopsided victory.

So, Friedgen gets to go out holding a trophy after a nine-win turnaround season. Guess that's about as good as it gets under the circumstances.

Not to mention his 2 Million Dollar buy-out to pad things, just a bit.

Ridiculous that we played this crap team in such a crap bowl. Glad Ralph sent a message by beating the piss out of them. Nice job by Pam Ward saying Maryland has never been a football school. I am sure Randy White and Boomer Esiason appreciated that. Sure they're not USC, but the Terps have been good before and there is no excuse for them not being good again. Bring on Leach.

Pete, that was'nt a good way to show us a spinoff of a Leach offense. Those boys hardly knew how to run the rock and the Terps pretty much manhandled everything they threw at 'em.ECU is'nt what they say they are, judging by this game.Damn shame we had to play a mismatch for a bowl and their coach!?he needs to lose more weight than Ralph does!! Da'rel Scott went out in style and all the coaches deserve a big pat on the back for propping the football team up this week.I'm proud of what I saw on the field today and glad that ad Anderson stayed incognito considering what he's triggered at Maryland. We lost a good man and old school coach who had his team on the way up(with coach Brown).

Friedgen showed NO CLASS in running up the score. Up by 31 with 8 minutes left and you throw the ball? 4th and 8 with 4 minutes left and you go for it? No Class Ralphie; none at all. You got two million dollars in your pocket for mediocrity played out before an empty stadium and unsold sky boxes. Spare us the crocodile tears. Take your money and run.

The score had nothing to do with ECU. I suspect that Friedgen told the ECU coach that at the end of the game. It wa spriceless seeing the look on Kevin Anderson's face near the end of the game. You could tell he was taking gass. Seems he definiely didn't want a result like this. MD didn't run the score up on ECU. They ran it up on Anderson.

Hopefully the Terps will win 10+ from now on, no matter who the coach is, but that walking scr0tum Anderson should be fired tomorrow morning

Money controls things in sports just like most of life. The bowls are controlled by a bunch of fat cat white guys who don't want to give up control although eventually they will.

Just because Maryland has some talent at times doesn't make it a big time football school. The community simply never supports it fully. It lies in the dead zone between Baltimore and Washington. Basketball does better because it requires a much smaller crowd to succeed.

I think Ralph was a fairly solid coach who wanted to be at MD. If they get anyone who has a lot of success it will be unlikely they can retain the coach. It takes a rare coach that turns down the big money to stay as a college coach.

Ralph should never have been fired. Mike Leach may not sign and he has UMD over the barrow. If no Leach, where do we get a better coach than Ralph. Plus the D carved up ECU's spread offense like MD never did against WVU so it gives us hope against WVU at Byrd next year. The deal for Ralph and the new coach will cost UMD 5 million next year. The fans in the area are NFL smitten and it will always be a struggle to fill the stupid Suites at Byrd. Byrd is easily one of the worst college stadiums in the ACC. I have two special chairs just to deal with the benches. I was really down on Ralph in the Miami game for trying not to lose and losing. But based on efforts against FSU, NCS and ECU, he should have gotten a chance to take this team to big things. My guess is they will be ranked 22nd this year and preseason 14 next year. Give Ralph a month to game plan and you get blown out in bowls. Too bad Mote retired because this would have never happened.

For those of you saying the Fridge had no class "running up the score," I say BULL. The aim of the game is to get points on the board! This is college football, not some rec league in the suburbs where everyone of your kids gets trophy for showing up. This is MD footall, and we were under-rated. Sending us 10 miles down the street for a bowl agains ECU? Please! If you want ot seriously talk about a lack of class: The "previous" MD Assistant Coach, Vanderbilt, and the new Athletic Director all displayed NO CLASS last week. The Asst. Coach who parlayed his public "head coach in waiting" status to up his value AND get himself a new job, Vanderbilt which didn't have the class to hold off on announcing the selection for 1 freaking weekuntil after the Bowl game, and the new Athletic Director for doing the same should ALL be ashamed. THEY DARKENED THE LIGHT OVER MD. The Fridge played for MD for God's Sake...and walked away from talks with the NFL for a Pro coaching job a few years back for this school! He deserved much better from the NCAA, his Asst. and the University! The UM President shouldl SERIOUSLY re-evaluate the AD NOW, and get rid of him since he has no clue how to treat legacy UM grads, players, and coaches! EVERY SINGLE ALUM I HAVE SPOKEN TO IS LIVID at how this was handled! Just wait til the AD goes after Gary...the man who brought the school the NCAA BBALL championship and the Comcast Center (:Williams Center" someday I'm sure) What an ego on this guy! Fire the AD!

Great news that MD won big today. Testament to the coach and team. It's a real shame that MD spent very litle time, effort and certainly money going after Anderson, Certainly no money was invested in media training for the new AD since he could not handle q press conference where his lack of training threw e coach under the bus. Ralph deserved better and Md owed him this- even if it was time for him to move on.
The entire AD search was a joke and it is now proving out in real life .

Ironic that an injury to the Friedgen choice for QB, Jamarr Robinson, saved Friedgen's season.

O'Brien's play was a huge part of the success of the Terps this year. Not saying the Friedgen should have been fired, but O'Brien was the choice. We was already red-shirted and showed more promise.

If Robinson kept playing, the Terps were looking at .500 at best.

Please stop with all of the hissy fits over Ralph's removal.
If anyone is to blame for the awkwardness of this inevitable coaching change, it was Friedgen and his agent.
It has been reported that Anderson the new Ad was not the one that upset the plan. But rather Ralph and his agent/attorney when they immediately started negotiations in the press for a contract extension after the NCstate game.
This occurred with the full knowledge that Asst Franklin was waiting on his eventual promotion to Head Coach with the $1million
penalty fee hanging over the university.
And Ralph's friend and assistant head coach and the university were about to be shafted by Ralph's new found ambition.
It was Ralph who went to Comcast after realizing that change was being proposed and created the turmoil.
All of this after a supposed dramatic season turn around. Which was facilitated by  playing a virtual division 2 schedule. There was not close to a signature win this season. The only close possibility was NCState which has been inept against Md for years.
If the Ralph supporters do not see the necessity of revenue generation from the football program then the future is not bright.
There has been minimum excitement for this program since the initial success generated by Ralph using his predecessor Vanderlinen's recruits. As soon as Ralph had to rely solely on his own recruits the program took a tail spin.
Also the wide open exciting brand of football that had most excited, faded quickly into the play not to lose, boring and uninspired performances we witnessed over the past 7 years.
Change became necessary and essential and am sure Anderson had no intention of embarrassing Ralph or the university in this process!!!

EC and Mricklen are exactly right on this. Ralph started this mess when he blabbed to the media that he wanted to continue coaching on a Joe Paterno contract, as long as he felt like it. That drove J. Franklin away and screwed Mr. Franklin royally, who should have been given the reins of the team this coming year. Now, Ralph gets his head all swelled up with a few wins over loser teams; and screws everything up. It's time for him to move on and wish the new AD good luck, because Mr. Anderson did exactly the right thing after Ralph drove J. Franklin away. Ralph was NOT going to get any contract extension based on his results on the field and in the stands. Bye-bye.

Hey Peter, how many people ask you what does Jenn Sterger have to do with Baltimore sports? Why do I see "Jenn Sterger pics" every time I log onto the sports page?

...............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I'm just glad they aren't Brett Favre pics, if you get my drift.
