Schmuck on the run

Obviously, I haven't been around for awhile. I'm in Southern California on some family business and soon will be headed for Las Vegas for a little R&R. Hope you understand. I'll also be taking a long vacation later in the month, but we're planning to juice up the blog again in December.

In the meantime, if you haven't already, you can take a look at my lengthy Q&A with Maryland womens basketball coach Brenda Frese, which was in yesterday's print edition. I would have posted a link sooner, but we originally planned to run the package leading up to Saturday's opener against Monmouth and I got caught flat-footed when it was moved up on the schedule.

Anyway, if you missed it, you can take a look right here.

How much time off do you have? Looks like the Sun must be a socialist sympathizer.

Great, great interview with Brenda Frese. Thank you for doing it. She is wonderfully refreshing and I actually liked the Q and A format for this story. Enjoy your time off.

Pete, hope the poker gods are on your side when you get to vegas. My predition as to whom the orioles will sign, adam larouche, see he fits perfectly into the pattern that the orioles have been accustomed to. Get him after he has put up good numbers instead of picking him up each of the last 3 years when they had a chance. See we like to pick ball players up in the real prime of there career's almost to the extent of being washed up. They are the only free agents we are able to acguire.GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN

Oh thank goodness. I was very worried.

blancione,

Don't forget Jon Garland. That will be the innings eater that we are all hoping after AM "watches the market devolop", following the bargain buys and projects aquired at the non-tender deadline.

That's where the bar has been set. Before it was Aubrey Huff and Kris Benson.

And no doubt squeeze in a Double-Double or two?

Pete's reply: In an amazing display of self-discipline, I only had one.

Hi Pete ~ That was a great article, and you did an awesome job of asking great questions with sensitivity. Thanks for using your talents to share with us. My prayers go out for Coach Barbara and her family. Although..... being a graduate of Monmouth University, we would love to see an upset!
Enjoy your time in California and I hope all is well with your family....

mr. schmucker:
2 biography recommendations (they both read like suspense novels!).
1. Wired by Bob Woodward (John Belushi) and 2. Careless Love, The Unmaking of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick.
regards.

Pete's reply: John, thanks. I read "Wired" many years ago. Gripping and tragic. I'll check out the other one when I get a chance. Right now, I'm suddenly reading "LA Noir," which I got at the airport when I forgot to take my Korean War book on the trip.

Mr Schmuck, get ready for the unemployment line!

Pete's reply: I don't think I'm going to get any unemployment insurance. I still have two jobs, not counting the one where I have to put up with you.

Mr Schmuck, get ready for the unemployment line!

First of all that isn't very nice!
Second, you're a "Bird Brain!

If Schmuck does indeed join the line.
He should have company joining him.

Like for example the "Stockstill Boys" for being "Incompetent"
Then, Andy MacPhail should be given the "Heave Ho" just for being Andy MacPhail..... what a shameful effort on his part! Shameful!

dave,

Jon Garland would not be a bad pick-up. As more of a ground ball guy, he would be a good fit for OPACY and at 31, would fill the "veteran innings eater" role more than adequately.

Cliff Lee isn't coming to Baltimore. If you look at the next tier of FA starters, the pickings are slim. Jon Garland isn't much of a step down from Carl Pavano.

The O's will never buy an "Ace" under MacPhail. The best hope is that Matusz develops into something close next year. His last 2 months showed that it is a possibility. Guthrie, Matusz and Bergesen are probably the only locks for the rotation at this point. Arrieta had a decent showing, so you could probably mark him down as #4, but that 5th spot is still up for grabs and no one knows whether Tillman or Britton are gonna be ready to grab it. On top of that, you don't know if one or more of our young pitchers will get traded (I'm thinking one of Arrieta or Tillman will go) as part of a package to fill one of the needs for a corner infielder.

Having a guy like Garland in the middle of the rotation to eat innings would not be a bad thing.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
