Boise State: Wake up call
I'm totally stunned by Boise State's loss to No. 19 Nevada late last night, and maybe it was my fault. I was watching the game, but went to bed when the Broncos took a 24-7 lead late into the third quarter.
I fully expected to wake up to a 38-7 victory that jumped them over TCU and into position to play in the BCS title game if either Oregon or Auburn stumble. Now, though I can't harp on the big-conference conspiracy to keep them out of the title game, I can start harping on the big-conference conspiracy to keep them out of a BCS bowl game.
Spare me. Boise State won 24 straight games, beat Oregon and TCU last year, and finally loses on the road against a Top 20 team because the Bronco's kicker missed what amounted to an extra-point-distance field goal, and they drop from possibly playing in the BCS title game to settling for the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.
Meanwhile, Alabama has lost three games and just blew a 24-point lead yesterday against Auburn, but the Tide will definitely play in a better bowl than Boise St.
It's playoff time.
If you get a chance, check out my column in today's print edition of the Sun, or click right here to read it on the Web site.
Shameless radio plug: I'll be whining about Boise State today from noon to 3 on "Sportsline" (WBAL 1090 and WBAL.com). Of course, I'll also be whining about the Orioles coming up short on free agent Victor Martinez and looking ahead to tomorrow's game between the Ravens and surprising Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I'll be taking calls all afternoon, so you're welcome to join in the conversation.

I'm glad Boise State lost, because the thought of them in a title game is utterly ridiculous.
Here's what I think. Boise State's problem isn't that they can't get a title shot after a 12-0 schedule against the likes of Hawaii, Toledo, Louisiana Tech, Idaho and Utah State. It's that they can't get a higher-quality schedule because of a lack of major conference interest in playing them.
So why not create a solution to the real problem, rather than joining the rabble in calling for schools like Boise State to get a title shot even with a lackluster schedule? (that is, addressing the symptom instead of the cause) If the BCS conferences are really interested in protecting their little cartel, why not force them to agree to a set number of contests against top mid-major programs. It would be easy enough to mandate that BCS schools all play a game or two a year against schools from conferences like the WAC, and if a simple concession like that helps tamp criticism of the BCS system I have to think the big conferences would have to agree to it (as well, television carriers would likely be in favor of replacing cupcake contests with more competitive games). This would also eliminate the flexibility of individual scheduling, the real reason schools won't book a date with Boise State ("why should I book a game I can lose when my conference competition is scheduling a cupcake?")
Then, if Boise State went undefeated with a few more major opponents on their schedule it would be easier for people like me to take them more seriously as a national title contender. But this would leave it up to the teams to decide on the field, rather than sportswriters.

I completely agree with Andrew. The same goes for TCU, who has played Oregon State, Tennessee Tech, BYU, Air Force, and UNLV, to name a few games on their schedule. Meanwhile, Alabama, though it has lost, has lost to three ranked teams. Auburn, don't forget is #2 in the country, while Boise State (supposedly #4) struggled with #19 Nevada.

Had to feel for Boise state after their kicker choked on not one but two chip shot field goals in about 2 minutes.I thought the first one was good bur with Nevada having those short field goal posts we'll never know. The kicker hasn't had to kick in a pressure situation all year and it showed.

Is it really necessary to post comments like those from f***you above? Show some class, Mr. Schmuck. My preteen son reads the sports blogs on the SUN site regularly - I did not think it was necessary for me to pre-screen the comments there, especially on your blog.
As for f***you, your potty mouth does not impress anyone. Try to express your opinion without resorting to the language of middle school boys trying to impress their friends.

It is time for the pro-playoff folks to find a new poster child. The polls this year were fixed from the start to pave the way for Boise. They have the SAME RECORD as un-ranked Hawaii and played essentially the same schedule. The only explanation for their absurdly high ranking is a conspiracy.
What now cry babies? :)

Maybe if Boise State wants to play in the title game, they should join the PAC-10? How hard is it for a school to join a difference Conference? The ACC had Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Miami join. I'm sure Boise State can do the same.

As a Nevada alum and a current Baltimore resident I can only say WOOHOO! Sorry if it bums you out Pete, but the Pack is back. Nevada has only lost once all year too- a 2 point squeaker of an away game to Hawaii. I hope we get to go to a decent Bowl game. I also hope, as does PghSteve, that your censors do a better job regulating comments. I thought each one got looked at, no? Anyway, go Pack!

Not so fast my friend!
To say people are cynical, when 13 years of data is looking you in the face is ridiculas!. After demonstrating futility like only the Pirates over the same span, what would entice a quality FA to come to Balmore? Our committment to excellence, post season a love for crab cakes? Wake up, as Dennis Green said, we are what our record says! Two months at the end of season when having been mathematically eliminated by July 4, doesn't a season make. If you don't believe me ask Buck!
Two years ago on this blog, I noted the day AM were to decide to spend a little money, it wouldn't work because of our reputation and it would take a lengthy committment to winning and spending money, not like a faucet you turn on and off. What agent would recommend this outfit unless the player has an injury or declining in talent!
You can call this cynical, I call it reality and only once YOU realize that offering a little less (or in Tex's case) a lot less, agents and players want a long-term committment of prosperity, not a one year shot in the dark! Our reputation proceeds us! Its not confederate Dollars, it's a lack of long-term committment.
Please tell it like it is and quit protecting a terrible GM and inferior leadership structure.
The truth will set you free!

Every other team in the NCAA is judged by their accomplishments in the current year. Not Boise State. For the Broncos they "beat Oregon and TCU last year" and somehow that means something this year to Broncos fans.
Looks, Boise State has had an outstanding program. But "spare me" your justifications that playing three competitive games in a season is similar to playing competitive teams in all but three games. That does not mean they were not deserving of playing in a BCS bowl game, I still believe they are, but the argument against BSU is still valid. And until you start using previous years as justification for their performance in the current year you will continue to prove that to be true.

I typically don't follow college football any further than what I can't escape. I have followed Maryland a little bit more the past two years mainly because my daughter now goes there. I even went to a game there.
It has been inescapable the talk about Boise State. I know Peter has championed their cause but I'm not sure if it is because of Boise State themselves or to draw light to the perverted "system" of playing for and/or being named National Champions.
I overheard on NFL Sirius radio Boise State was up 17-0. I had decided I would do an impartial (easy for me to do) look at Boise State's undefeated record the next day and set it against the backdrop of whoever the teams were ahead of them. That little exercise became moot when I found out they missed two FGs to lose in OT.
If the sadness for their loss is because of the team itself, it seems they have still accomplished quite a lot. That may be little solace for the fans regardless if they were long-timers or new to the bandwagon.
If the sadness is because this would have proven once and for all the college system of naming a National Champion is bogus, then perhaps the loss is actually good for you.
Had Boise State run the table and not played for the National Championship, there would have been howls aplenty. But that is all there would have been. The Powers (i.e. The Money) would have dragged their feet and the undefeated non-champion would have been a footnote only as time wore on.
Logic has historically had little effect as being an incentive for any change. That's why history is full of wars. If empires can fall while whistling in defiance, the little ol' NCAA has little to worry about.
