Today in sports

If you were looking for a watershed day in Baltimore sports, I guess today would be right near the top of the list. The Orioles wrap up the 2010 season with a chance to sweep a four-game series from the Detroit Tigers and there's a fairly important NFL game going on over at Heinz Field.

I'm guessing you know how important that game in Pittsburgh is -- even at this early stage of the season -- but why don't you check out my column on the subject right here if you haven't already. It'll be good for my self-esteem, which has been sagging since my deflating defeat at the MCW event in Dundalk a few weeks ago. Kevin Eck continues to duck me, by the way, so I may have to go on a "Bum of the Month" tour. I wonder if Roch has any nights off coming up.

There's a lot of great reading material on the Orioles and Ravens in today's newspaper and on the Web site, including a voluminous profile of Peter Angelos by Childs Walker and Jeff Zrebiec's story about Andy MacPhail's offseason plans.

While you check all that out, I'm heading for the man cave to watch the Ravens.

Gotta love MacPhail. "Bold can't be a code word for stupid or a code word for hurting the future to get through the next year." Hey Andy, "stupid" and "one-year stop-gaps" were your modus operandi for the past two offseasons- nobody is suggesting we do that again.

"Bold" has a definition in the dictionary and nobody has suggested that it means stupid or short-sighted except for you. That final paragraph doesn't make you sound like a wise baseball executive- it makes YOU sound stupid. And that isn't a code word for anything but stupid.

At least you're up-front about your biases, do you think it is inherently stupid and short-sighted to sign quality bats and true front-line pitchers to big contracts??? If this is the case, maybe you aren't GM material, at least not in the AL East.

And Peter- note the comment about how they expect someone with Showalter's experience and presence to have more involvement in the offseason than the last few managers. Hmmm, that sounds suspiciously similar to one of the main arguments people on here were making to replace Trembley at the end of last season. There is no doubt our last offseason would have been different (and our opening day roster) had Showalter been in seat a year ago. The way things worked out, all we ended up with was a wasted year (as Zrebiec astutely points out when he comments that the team's shortcomings now are identical to what they were the last two offseasons). You already had 50+ games of solid performance under Showalter to rebuff your stubborn insistence that he shouldn't have been hired earlier, but now you have Andy MacPhail pointing out that we would have had a different offseason last year had Showalter been here. Clearly, obviously, without a doubt and inarguably, this season would have been substantially better if Showalter would have been hired a year ago. Case closed.

Hey Andrew,
How many other "stupid" GM's have won 2 World Series?
You can probably google it or something.
What have you achieved that gives you the right to call very successfull people stupid?
Really?

Oh yeah Andy, Who is this front line starter you would have signed? Burnet Maybe???
Keep your day job and let the proffessionals run a baseball team.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
