Ravens: No problem

Apparently, screwing up the first drive just got the Ravens offense and defense even more fired up. Joe Flacco led the Ravens on long touchdown drives on their next two possessions to take a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter and Kyle Orton has not been able to get the Broncos offense in gear.

It kind of reminded me of that scene in "Blazing Saddles" when Gene Wilder warns everyone about Mongo.

"If you shoot him, you'll only make him mad."

Better news: Ray Rice looks like his old self. He has run the ball very effectively and elusively, though I'm hoping he saves his best for the first offensive play against the Patriots next week in Foxborough.

Looked like the Ravens were on their way to a route, but have been stymied since the second quarter.

Flacco looked good, but Fouts summed up
his problem--he feels pressure, can't find his main receiver, and makes errant throws off of his back foot.

Good win.

The Ravens played great in the first quarter and great in the fourth quarter. Their real potential will be seen when they play a full game.

This could have been an big score, more like 42 or even 50+ points if they played their A game for 60 minutes.

Pete 4 and 1 is great , but if this team doesn't generate more pass rush it will all start to catch up with them. Kyle had all day out there today and had 2 long passes nullified because of penalities, looks good because we wore them down in the second half but mark my words about the lack of pass rush.

Pete's reply: I definitely would like to see more sacks, but they got consistent pressure on Orton. He seldom was standing still back there, but give him credit for taking advantage of those two big opportunities. He can thread a needle. Flacco impressed me with his touch at times, too, but more with his judgment.

Baltimore we do have a problem.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
