Ravens: New column is up
Sorry, but I just got back from a couple of days off and spent the day putting together a Ravens column for tomorrow's print edition. Of course, you can take a look at it right now if you click here.

While it may take some time for Brady and Branch to get onto the same page again, it isn't exactly the same as the ancient, scandal-ridden QB meeting a WR who had never been part of the system before for the first time.
While the stockpiling of draft choices while the Patriots are in a retooling* mode was correctly mentioned, there is also another component involved here. The Patriots will need to assess the needs of those draft picks.
New England has second-year WR's Julian Edelman and Brandon Tate on their roster as well as rookie, Taylor Price. Edelman doesn't strike me as being a deep threat but what little I have seen tells me he could be a Wes Welker type. Two Wes Welker types at the same time won't be much fun for the Raven D who will probably be spread out all over the place this Sunday.
The point is the Patriots may already have Moss's successor as well. I seem to remember when Bledsoe went down, laughing that some guy named Tom Brady was going to QB the then 0-2 Pats. I'm not so quick to laugh at the Ravens' good luck. In fact, I'm leaning very heavily towards picking New England this week and just hope I'm wrong.
(* - For any other team, it would be rebuilding but New England is unique in that they can contend while the turnover is happening.)

This is a game where the offense needs to step up. As good as the Ravens D has been this year and traditionally, they can never shut the door on teams like the Pats. and Colts. The Pats offense is going to rack up some points on the Ravens, just accept it. This will be an awakening for a Ravens pass defense that has not been tested anything like what it is about to be.
But, the Pats defense is made of tissue paper and string. If the offensive line protects Flacco and opens holes for the three headed monster like they did Sunday, and the Joe Cool version of Flacco plays all game, the Ravens can win this in a shootout.

If they play the run-first, smash-mouth game they played in the divisional playoff round, the Ravens will beat the Pats.
If they play the cutesy, throw first offense, Ravens fans could be in for a long afternoon.
I hope Cam reads this blog.
