Coming Tuesday: Schmuck interviews Ripken

It’s hard to believe, but the fresh-faced kid who burst into the Orioles lineup in 1982, caught the final out of the World Series in 1983 and broke Lou Gehrig’s supposedly unbreakable consecutive games record in 1995 has reached the half-century mark. Cal Ripken Jr. turns 50 on Tuesday, so we thought it was a perfect time to sit down with him and talk about his great career, his reaction to the Big 5-0 and his plans for the future. Here's a sneak preview of the video interview, which will be posted in its entirety Tuesday.

looking forward to it!

Finally! I will be able to post Cal on to my blog page of hot guys over 50. I've been waiting for this day.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: What about me?

Yo Pete,

You better check that site above
It's awfully saucy. I am not sure if Mrs Ripken would aprove.

In other breaking news.
I cannot believe Cal Ripken is 50.

Where does the time go?

Robin: Finally! I will be able to post Cal on to my blog page of hot guys over 50. I've been waiting for this day.

Pete's reply: What about me?

You can post Cal onto your blog page of hot guys over 50 if you want to.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Touche.

So ESPN just announced that Millwood has given up the most first inning runs since 1970.

So this means that Cal was 10 when a pitcher last gave up this many first inning runs. Ten......

Hey Matusz and Arietta. DON'T WATCH THIS GUY........... EVER

I feel like I should get something special for having the same birthday as Cal Ripken, Jr. Maybe he could send me some birthday tickets ;) haha jk.

Happy 50th, Cal!

Luke hits #100, moves him into a tie for 743rd place, along with John Kruk, and 1 ahead of a fellow named Atkins!

Hey posters. DON'T ADDRESS THIS MENTAL PATIENT........... EVER

smitty,

But you just did.

Besides, what did I say that wasn't true?

Too funny

Big Night.....

Brian's Bash seemed to be pretty successful last night.

I wish more would talk about this annual charity gathering (Pete wrote a Blog about last week). After all, it's for the kids the proceeds helping so many.

Brian's a class act. While many athletes talk a good game, Brian delivers in more ways than people realize.

It was also great to see a good number of O's show up for the event.

Was a special evening.

The year it became ingrained in my mind that Cal's birthday falls on August 24 was 1983 (his 23rd). That was the night Tippy Martinez picked off 3 Blue Jays in the top of the 10th inning after a Cliff Johnson homer put Toronto up 4-3. The birthday boy re-tied the game with a home run to lead off the bottom of the 10th before Lenn Sakata - who was playing catcher in the top of the 10th (which is why the Jays were anxious to steal) - hit a 3 run homer to win one of the most memorable games in Oriole history.

I wish more would talk about this annual charity gathering (Pete wrote a Blog about last week). After all, it's for the kids the proceeds helping so many.
****

uh... there is only a bit on MASN during the games almost ever other inning? Guess that is just MASN being shills for the team.

oh crap. guess this means I hate the kids too.

Sham-

How often have you heard about it on the local news, radio and other media? Of course MASN will advertise it, but not everyone is a baseball fan and therefore doesn't know about it.. The event isn't about Brian Roberts or the Orioles. I think a few of the Ravens and Nationals should get envolved too, which will make it huge

you people need to listen to wayne more. he tells the truth and calls out discrimination.

how can the warehousers explain this one?

Andino whose still at AAA is first in the international league in hits and with 73 RBIs. but AM won't bring up a power bat because that might help this team actually win.

but this is birdland and we choose to lose LOL

Precisely Dave.... Thanks.

SHAMsmit, You continue to show your lack of class and humanity.

No surprise there.

Maybe the O's will let Cal take over the MASN productions. I can't take the commercials anymore. The new one about the old guy (BRob) is beyond lame, but that one about staying on 3rd is ridiculous!

If Andino is a power bat, we are f%&ked!!!!!

Pete, what did you think of the work by Big Ben? I honestly thought he brought great insight to the game and seemed to given honest and insightful opinions. I would love to see him work the games regularly instead of Flanny. I am sorry, but Flanny has zero personality and seems boreg at times.

It's hard to believe, that the cub reporter who busted in with the OC Register in the last century, is interviewing Cal Ripkin.

I'm proud (sniff) to have read many Angels recaps written by that Schmuck.

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: You're showing your age.

wayne and dave-

where else should it have been? would 30 seconds on the 11pm with Rob Roblin made you happy? How about a reality show special? helicopter chase? What other 'media are you referring to dave?

While it didn't squeeze on the local news (at least I couldn't find it, but who watches anyway), word seems to have gotten around...

also... on Facebook.... Twitter.... and many other blogs... Pretty sure its gotten its share of plugs on WBAL Radio, no doubt 105.7...

Go take self righteous elsewhere. Always have to turn something into a negative, don't you? And don't talk to me about class...

Wayne and Dave-

Put too many links showing the coverage of Brian's Baseball Bash. Think it gets blocked because of that.

Too much to retype. Maybe it gets posted.

Either way, take the self righteous somewhere else. Not everything has to be negative.

You show your class with each post SHAMsmit. Your act is old and people know you simply respond to yourself in order to get support.

You mock an era of racism and you take a post about a great event for kids and twist what is said in a hateful way.

And the sad news is...from reading your post over the months, we know you sleep well at night.

So no Ss.... nothing self righteous here. We're just feeling a little sad for you.

tell it like it is, wayne baby!

wayne, mesoangelos, and keith rowe GET IT. they call out the koolaid drinking prejudice here.

how can you other people be so insensative?

as wayne said it first, you all have no humanity.

your the kind of people that pick isturiz over a real batting SS like andino, who could be making the difference on this team. but no, AM doesn't want to win and neither do you. why do you even read this blog?

Peter, I believe this is my first response but read you every day. FANTASTIC interview with Cal.

WAYNE: internet clown. Bitter, pathetic loser. If you were my brother, I'd try to get you help. Don't know how Baltimore's bloggers allow you to repeat the same stupid crap day after day (if you are officially diagnosed with a disorder, I apologize).

Bitter, angry 'Wayne', loser in life: If you died tonight, how many would come to your funeral? How many would care? You seem like an extremely bitter person who has had the good things in life pass them by. Being an a__hole does not mean you have to spend all of your life that way. People can choose to NOT be an a__hole.

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: BB, I appreciate the kind words for me, but would prefer it if we all could tone down the personal attacks. I've been guilty of it, as have many others here, but sometimes it just gets too unfriendly. As you all know, I'm a lover, not a fighter.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Why do you think I am smitty? If I was to come up with a fake name, wouldn't I do something that at least wouldn't start with an S?

I didn't mock racism, I mocked you, dope. Big difference.

I responded to your typical unrelated post (Schmuck didn't interview Cal Tuesday about Brian's Bash did he?) You said it was only covered by Pete. Search it on google... its gotten around. Maybe not covered by Rob Roblin for 30 seconds at 11, but it has been covered.

Stop hijacking the blog with whatever wayne thinks is important. Feel free to start your own blog (you should have the link).

Feeling sad for others, especially when you don't mean it, is self righteous.

Personally, I don't sleep great. I get stuck staying up watching TV and I have dry sinuses which makes me labor a little breathing. Don't worry, I am getting it checked out.

But I will stop, this is a post about Cal, not the beginning stages of Sleep Apnea.

Cal Comment-

I would like to thank Cal for teaching a generation of little leaguers the proper method of the side arm sling to first. Goes against baseball fundamentals, but hey, we all looked cool doing it! Guess it made due, too, 21 seasons in baseball later.

Look forward to him taking over the team when Angelos passes on to that big Silver Diner in the sky.

(Crap, that was insensitive to Greeks in the restaurant industry. Sorry wayne).

You know what else was great about Cal?

His .788 OPS. He played in an era before Sabermetrics and when walking wasn't the same as getting a hit. Teams weren't built around pitches taken and walks.

513 all time. I would definitely take him over Richie Hebner, Glenallen Hill, Marty Cordova, Phil Bradley and even High Pockets Kelly.

You know why baseball takes forever? The foul ball war of attrition and OPS. That and multiple mid inning match up pitching changes. But, I digress.......

Great post bb...... no really. Excellent stuff....

Pretty sure my buds at the park would come by the way. Perhaps even an usher or two. Who knows.

As for bitter?... nah - it's just a game. Do you know what bitter means?

angry? Yeah, I suppose I get angry that PA and AM continue to run this team into the ground. Perhaps Buck will turn things around. angry yes (at times), bitter...nah.

loser? Well I guess if I'm an O's fan, I must be. So ding ding ding. You got that one correct.

As for this being your first response. Why do you lie dude? Do you lie to everyone in your life?

Well yeah... I'm sure you do.

Come on brother.... the Blog is here especially for guys just like you. Lie all you want. Let it all out homie......

SHAMsmit,

I don't even know what you're talking about anymore. Do you drink heavily every night?

That's fine... but please don't go back and read what you write after said episodes. You may not like what you see.

Or maybe you will.

Wow, wayne. Accusing people of racism wasn't enough--now you need to accuse folks of alcohol abuse (see 11:35PM post).

Do you have any idea of how extraordinarily insensitive your comments are? Are you under the impression that they give you credibility?

Good grief, I feel like I need to wash off the dirt every time I stumble across one of your posts. Please consider adding a little sensitivity in your comments, even if people happen to be lampooning you right and left. If this blog means as little to you as you say, you should be able to rise above it, Wayne.

Great Blog Pete. I'm a long time reader although this is the first time I've written.

I agree with bb Pete. That wayne guy is such a tool. I read your blog a lot and as a first time poster, I don't like him. Why do you let him post so much Pete?

As a first time poster, i just don't understand. It upsets me very much, as a first time poster that is.

Go O's

First time poster

birdfan, you can't handle the truth and your a pansy that needs to grow up if you can't take the truth.

wayne is right about millwood, the guy has NEVER been good in his career. big surprise, AM signs him as the savior of the team in the offseason LOL

wayne, keep up speaking the truth, you are the voice of the smart people on this blog, the people who can't be fooled by all the liers

..............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Once again, when you talk about how much smarter you are than the other readers on the blog, it's always best to spell things right.

Thanks auntie,

I'm happy that you agree with the many posters who said Millwood was a huge risk. I mean it was so obvious by looking at his 2007 and 2008 seasons, not to mention the Rangers couldn't wait to unload the guy.

Just makes one ask,,,,,,, Why didn't AM and that wizard Lee IV see what many fans saw?

I know, wierd....

I'm just glad you're with us smitty

This blog is getting stale. I pretty sure that all the entries are by either Shamrock or Wayno...

Guys..get a life. Ahh, never mind we are Oriole fans....

ooohhhhh,

smitty gets smacked by Pete. Nice

Ahhh only true Orioles fans can show more passion by fighting on a Blog rather then going down to the Yard and enjoying a beer and a dog.

Oh well what happened to wishing Cal a Happy B Day! I had no idea that 50 was coming so soon.

Also, Robin you are way too saucy for this site!

Being as I didn't even post on this link before now, Just who is obsessed with who ol W?

Nice to be noticed I suppose

Birdfan from Birth-

Technically, I did had a glass of wine last night. So wayne is kind of right. It was from Sheldrake, an upstate NY red blend. Not sure if that pluralizes drinking though?

Wayne-

Actually going back and reading makes me giggle. You are like shooting fish in a barrel. Maybe you should go back and re-read what I wrote, seeing as how you have difficulty reading what others write because you are busy coming up with unrelated questions that clogs the blog with nonconstructive dialog.

What part do you no longer understand?

Was it the part where I pointed out the historical stupidity of OPS as it pertains to Cal Ripken?

The part where I mentioned how Cal threw side arm to first?

The part where I suggested you get your own blog and stop treating this like the wayne blog?

The part where I explained that I was mocking you and not segregation of the MLB?

PS- I split a glass of wine tonight (note- glass, not bottle). A delightful Ravenswood Zinfandel. I did not see the bottle, it might have just been the Vintners blend as it seemed a little less flavorful as the Lodi Zinfandel they offer.

Ishmael: Okay, you want to bowl for some big money, eh? But I'll lose my entire bonus check because I'm so *bombed* (smiles)

McKnight Bowl Bartender: You get that way from ginger ale?

Roy: Nah, he was sniffing glue in the parking lot.

That's the last time, wayne. That the last time you ever make me look bad in front of those kids, you hear me? I make $31,000 a year and I have a home and I'm not about to throw it all away on some punk like you. But someday when you're outta here and you've forgotten all about this place and they've forgotten all about you, and you're wrapped up in your own pathetic life, I'm gonna be there. That's right. And I'm gonna kick the living sh!t out of you. I'm gonna knock your d!ck in the dirt.

best line in that movie... Vernon was one a bad a$$. Just thought it fit.

PS- Don't accuse me of being racist over this post... Im just funnin'...

wayne...

You ought to spend a little more time trying to make something of yourself and a little less time trying to impress people.

and the rest of the Wayne supporters?

You think he's funny? You think this is cute? You think he's "bitchin," is that it? Let me tell you something. Look at him - he's a bum. You want to see something funny? You go visit wayne in five years. You'll see how g*ddamned funny he is.

Keep in mind...

The next time I have to come in here I'm crackin' skulls.

In conclusion...

Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.

PS- can't believe I missed part of the Sandlot to see guthrie give up a 3 RBI HR.

RICHARD,

Yes........... Someone with originality, even if you are just a re-use of another name.

No matter... that was GREAT stuff.

And you got it... I'll do my best to make something of myself sir. I'll get right on that.

I think i can
I think i can
I think i can
I think i can
I think i can

Wayne didn't get it.

He's a neomaxizoomdweebie.
