Buckle up!

trembleyap.jpgIt could be a bumpy ride today. There has been speculation all week that manager Dave Trembley could be replaced at the end of this series, so it's possible he will be managing his final game today at Yankee Stadium.

If so, it's hard to imagine him going out on a high note, with the Orioles closing out the Yankees series against C.C. Sabathia. Kevin Millwood is still looking for his first victory of the year, so maybe this is a reverse lock.

The Orioles fly home after today's game and are scheduled to open a three-game weekend series against the Red Sox tomorrow at Camden Yards.

Who will own it?

When the change is made -- and it seems inevitable -- the interim figures to be third base coach Juan Samuel, but we'll just wait and see how things play out.

Oh yes about Galarraga's perfect game the Commisioner of Baseball should intervene just like was done for Brett's pine tar incident. O h I almost forgot about our Little league team the Baltimore Orioles will be swept today -Nuff said!

Maybe the Baltimore Horribles will lose this evening 30-3 to bookend the disastrous managerial career of Dave Trembley.

Excuse me, 30-1 since the Sorrioles can't score more than 1 run per game.

If this is his last game, I hope he goes out with a win.

I understand frustration with the team and its losing ways, but I don't understand the hostility directed towards the players and manager. Sure, they stink, but why are you so angry at them for it?

Blah blah blah. How long have we been speculating Trembley would be fired now? I'm starting to think MacFail is truly asleep at the wheel. But oh wait, he doesn't want to scapegoat Trembley. He's concentrating on "improving" the roster with the likes of Alberto Castillo and Rhyne Hughes.

We know firing Trembley isn't going to turn the O's into a winner. But it sure would be nice to see the front office do (not just say) something that indicates they are not satisfied.

Trembley seems like a good guy, but when nearly all of your players have regressed to the point that only a few would start on other teams...well...it's the right time to fire a coach.

The next best step would be to shake up the whole staff. No reason to keep the Crow. He's not bringing much to the table.

And maybe we can finally get serious this off-season. Anyone have a list of the free agents yet?

It is hard to just lay this on Trembley. I definitely believe he knows the game, but lacks the intensity to make his players accountable.

I have not liked Samuel as 3rd base coach with his numerous blown decisions, Crowley is beyond his prime and it now appears quite clear that McPhail has made serious misjudgements in player potential.

Schmuck, nice touch on the "Who Will Own It?" MASN nonsense.

WHO WILL OWN IT INDEED MASN? WHO WILL OWN THIS ABJECT DISASTER OF A TEAM?

WHO WILL OWN IT? MACFAIL? ANGELOS? WHO WILL OWN THIS STINKING TURD?

WHO WILL OWN IT?

can Juan mete out corporal punishment? I went to catholic schools, sometimes it works. The O's are in my territory and its hard. I get grief you wouldn't believe. My armor is pockmarked and my spirit is sagging. I'm walking away from the TV more and more. Bregenson's body language told the story. I thought my NJ Devils were a bunch of quitters, but this team is bringing it to a new level. What is the definition of a leader?????

And how will firing Trembley do any good? Unless they bring in a proven manager, like Bobby Valentine, and stop hiring lifelong minor league guys and base coaches, the results will be the same. Don't waste time 'promoting' someone from within because there will be change with the players.
Keep Trembley through the end of the season and then hire someone who can light a fire under these apathetic (and pathetic) players. Fire Crowley, too - although he can go now.

Trembley might be a good baseball man, but that doesn't mean he has the tools to be a good manager. This team truly lacks intensity and its fundamentals are sorely lacking. That sort of thing has to be laid at the feet of the manager and the staff. Maybe his true calling is to be a teacher, not the head man.

And I don't think MacPhail can be faulted for over valuing his players. All through baseball, these players have been highly touted and even with all the problems this year, there's no reason to think they can't rebound. After all, they are all young, Jones and Wieters are virtual babies when it comes to the Majors.

But my question is this. If you are going to replace the manager, does it make any sense to make one of his coaches the head guy? I'm sure Samuel has had some input into some of Trembley's decisions and certainly, if you are going to include the coaching staff in the blame for the team's lackluster attitude, why would you make one of those coaches the manager? I understand he would just be the interim guy, but still.

Pete, could you give some insight into how this process goes? Does the team make inquiries to guys around the game they might want before deciding to replace the current manager? And suppose Samuel, maybe out of loyalty to Trembley or some other reason, doesn't want the job? Do they talk to possible interim guys before hand and gauge interest?

Thanks.

Wally Backman is the answer...don't leave new york without him. Mets stink too so if the O's wait too long, he will get that job...Fire Trembley, Hire Wally and lighting a fire under our team won't be a problem too much longer...

Here we go again. Another year is lost and now we we will have 13 straight losing seasons. One person is not going to make a difference. A total housecleaning at the end of the year is in order. We need a manager who knows how to "light a fire" under these guys. How about Rick Dempsey?

NO RICK DEMPSEY!!!

NO FORMER ORIOLES!

If you've been associated with the O's for the last 25 years, you've been associated with a loser.

If they hire a former Oriole, all my O's memorabilia will end up in a box outside the warehouse because I won't need it anymore.

Please, do away with Crowley before Trembley. Everyone else on the team has been replaced over the years, so why has Crowley been the lone survivor when the team's offense has come under fire so often? And, why do people want Dempsey as manager? The guy's a goofball hack. Furthermore, our last 3 managers have had zero experience managing at the major-league level. Let's at least *try* to learn from one mistake and get someone in here with actual credentials.

I will beleive it when I see it.

I don't understand the frequent mention of Bobby Valentine. If he was that good he would still be a manager. The Orioles need a manager who is young, aggressive, and NOT a babysitter. They need somebody who isn't afraid of the players and isn't afraid to lose his job.

See: Earl Weaver, 1968.

It seems logical that if you're re-building a team and have a lot of young developing players that you would want a coach with plenty of experience to share. Hiring first-time coaches would seem to complicate things as now we have to develop a coaching staff along with the players.

I see people mentioning Valentine. Any other veteran coaches out there?

The O's will light up CC today and give Dave the chance to leave with a little dignity.

I feel sorry for Trembley. The Orioles are presently constructed are inferior to the other teams in the American League East. However, Trembley is clueless and has probably been responsible for a handful of losses with the way he has mishandled the bullpen. He needs to be the second person fired.

Like many others I don't understand why Terry Crowley constantly survives the managerial changes. I guess Angelos likes him. As a ballplayer Crowley was average at best and as a hitting coach he is awful. He is ruining these young players.

While we are at it lets fire Flanagan, Anderson, and Thorne and bring back Proctor and Lowenstein. Oh, I know, Angelos likes Flanagan also!

Ummm. Last playoff appearance managed by Davey Johnson. Time for Mr. Angelos to admit he made a mistake, a BIG mistake. Maybe, just maybe, Davey would be big enough to take the job.

I hear Brian Billick is looking for a job.

Fire everyone! Well there's enough blame to go around. While Trembley isn't the best manager he certainly wasn't given the tools to win. His mistakes are compounded because of the quaility of the players he has. he's been shoved into a corner. replacing him isn't going to make much of a difference. Mac Phail might have been successful once however it seems that the old proven game plan doesn't cut it this time.

I keep hearing these radio adds trying to get people to attend Orioles games. They call it "Bird Land". I think they might have better juck, and get a LOT more laughs (and interest) if the just admit the obvious. It's not Bird Land ... it's "Bird S**t Land" ... LOL !!!!

I wonder which one of the good old boys will get the full time gig ??

I guess DT has one more day to burn out the bullpen.

No way Bergy should have been pulled last night. Sure he was struggling, but games are ON your starters. You need them to give you innings regardless. It keeps your bullpen fresh & toughens your starters.

Ken,

Y cant u ever be straight up about anything ?

U really think

"All through baseball, these players have been highly touted"

WTF ??

U really believe the rest of mlb thinks "highly" of lou montanez and scott moore as macfail to constantly clog up a major league roster with useless players?

Smart ppl on this blog warned of all the problems with the Atkins and MGon signings too

Even casual fans know that you dont just avoid getting legit clean up hitters for yrs at a time

Even casual fans know that you need a true ace and not just an innings eater.

True aces dont go 0-5, no matter how bad their team is. Granted Millwood has had some tough luck-- thx in large part to the fact that MacFail built a defense with half the IF playing out of position. LOL

AM even managed to turn a weakness into a bigger weakness by grabbing corner IFs doing worse than the vaunted Huff/Mora tandem did last yr

Why do you feel the need to be dishonest about virtually everything regarding AM ?

The Orioles did what few teams have been able to do at Yankee Stadium ... silence the crowd. Yawn!!

hire me! i can't do any worse, and since i haven't played since little league, the players KNOW success will be on them to deliver. no more scapegoat = players playing better ball. give me the job angelos!

Please don't fire Trembley. That will make me go away!

If you're going to fire the manager, then some players need to go as well. This isn't all Trembley's fault. Why is Atkins still wasting a spot on the roster? I've been a fan 25 years, since I was born, and this year I am actually beginning to pay more attention to the Nationals. What's funny, is I wrote the Orioles about this. I told them it was unacceptable what they have on the field, and fans deserve WAY better, and that the Nationals seem to have things moving in the right direction. The lady that wrote back told me to be patient. WHAT? 13 years is patient, any longer is INSANITY!

this team is 3 games ahead of the '88 team which lost 21 straight. and still has 10 games in a row with ny and bost coming up.
all in all though this is a joke. how can even think about keeping trembley one more inning. the orioles are the laughing stock of sports. may the schmuck be with you.

@Just another MacFailure,

ey dude, ud prolly gt ppl 2 read yr thorts, f u knw h2 spel n wrt n en.

Translation in English for the rest of you guys (had to do it, because I don't think he can read English):

Hey dude, you would probably get people to read your thoughts, if you knew how to spell and write in English.

As much as this is a piece that needs to be done, upper management needs to admit some of its mistakes too and take action.

Carlos Delgado, Gary Sheffield, Darin Erstad, and Jermaine Dye are all still available.Put Atkins on the bench now. Scott's a flake too.

Also plenty of proven FA relief talent out there too. Or why the heck not bring up Arrieta?

The only way the O's inaction makes sense is that Angelos gave MacPhail a hard budget to stick to and won't change.

Nice article Peter.
If it is Samuel, more losing will come. We need someone who is not going to cater to these veterans. We need someone to take the bull by the horns.

The sad part about it, this is McFails mess. He is reaping the harvest he has put together.

Until the culture changes from the top down, there will be more and more losing to come.

Censorship is a bad thing!

I don't understand all of this hue and cry about the fate of Dave Trembley. He's the manager of the worst team in major league baseball that has shown no possibility of improving under his helm.

Sure, it's not all his fault, but there's no reason NOT to fire him. He'll survive (although it's unlikely that any other MLB team will hire him as manager).

Where's the sentimental concern for his predecessors Sam Perlozzo and Lee Mazzilli? How about all the former players that were cut or sent back down to the minors? Who cries for Brandon Fahey and Jeff Fiorentino?

This team stinks for a million different reasons, but something has to give. There are 4 months left in the season - is this team just supposed to limp along for the next 109 games without making any changes?

What kind of bats would MacPhail be able to buy at the end of this season if he made no changes to management of a team that will be lucky to win 50 games?

What veteran will want to play for a team after seeing the fate that befell staff ace Kevin Millwood thus far this season?

Trembley was unlikely to figure into the long-term plans of this club anyway, unless the team performed extraordinarily well under him, so this that ain't happenin', it was only a matter of when and not if he was to be fired.

Schmuck's anti-Trembley column earlier this week was a real disgrace, a high-tech lynch mob. (I'm not addressing this comment to Pete as I once did as he seems to have little interest in reader feedback--he just posts and forgets.)

He had the audacity to pretend to be sooo sympathetic for Trembley, shedding some crocodile tears and coming up with one of the sickest analogies I've read in a long time by liking Dave to an animal needing to be euthanized.

It doesn't speak well of the Sun's standards that it permits its writers to engage in such personal attacks. [Note to Tim Ryan: Why are you allowing this? It's not like there aren't thousands of aspiring journalists coming out of college who can't write just as well or better. If Schmuck isn't willing to clean up his act, then it would be in the best interests of the Sun to replace him with someone who doesn't stoop to kicking a man when he's down.]

In truth, Trembley's been managing a glorified Triple-A team all year. Last night's game is a perfect example, when the Orioles started fully five players who clearly belong in the minors based on their performances so far this year: Bergesen, Jones, Moore, Patterson and Wieters. How can that be on DT? Yet that's how he's been constrained as a manager all season.

MacPhail promised in the offseason to get Trembley players to make the team more competitive, but only Millwood has lived up to his reputation. Tejada has given the effort, but hasn't been as consistent as the O's had hoped. Gonzalez was damaged goods and it's amazing he got through the physical. (Maybe the team needs to look at having more intensive examinations.) Atkins was a huge, huge risk from the start, who MacPhail should have known wasn't likely to produce, given that he'd struggled the last three years for the Rockies and was now being asked to find his swing after switching leagues and being thrust into hitting game in and game out against pitchers in baseball's toughest division.

Furthermore, it's now clear that none of the rookie phenoms from last season is ready for prime time. (The exceptions being Berken, who went from starting to relieving, and perhaps Hernandez, if he's able to make the same transition work.) Consider these players, all of whom the Orioles had high hopes for going into the season and all of whom belong in the minors where they could work on their game:

Brad Beregesen - Clearly he's been affected by the injuries and can't find a consistent release point. And if he can't find the sink on his fastball, he's in trouble.

Adam Jones - The biggest disappointment of all, because he's regressed from an All-Star to someone who'd at best be a fourth outfielder. Pitchers love to face him because they've learned he'll consistently get himself out by swinging at pitches out of the strike zone.

Brian Matusz - He's close to being a decent major league starter, but close doesn't win ballgames. He may be tipping off his pitches.

Nolan Reimold - Like Bergesen, he may not have completely recovered from his injury. From star of the future to bust? Too soon to say, but he's not the same player.

Chris Tillman - Still young, still unproven, was unable to crack the 25-man roster coming out of spring training. Finally made it back, but hasn't pitched enough for much of an evaluation.

Matt Wieters - No O's prospect has had the hype in more than a decade. Another Mauer? Not yet, not close, even even in the same ballpark. The lack of power is disturbing. At least he's proving himself as a catcher.

Of course, I'm not even counting other disappointing performances, mainly Markakis. Some would question whether he should be so labeled, as he's hitting around .300 and has a great on base percentage, but for a player with his talent he's still underachieving: next to no power and failure to regularly come through in the clutch are two of his biggest offenses. A fine player, but he set the bar high for himself and has yet to reach the next plateau.

And we haven't even looked at the situation with Brian Roberts. He looks like he'll be coming back soon (fingers crossed), but his absence for most of the first two months of the season has had a domino effect on the rest of the lineup--without him in the leadoff role, this promising offense has turned into one of the worst in all baseball.

And Koji Uehara's injuries have had a similar effect on the pitching staff similar, albeit to a considerably lesser extent.

In sum, very little of what's hurting the Orioles right now can be laid at the feet of Dave Trembley. Anyone who's read my comments with any regularity knows that I've been critical of some of his in-game moves, but he certainly doesn't deserve to be run out of town on a rail as Schmuck wants. In fairness, he shouldn't be fired at least until after B-Rob's been able to come back and possibly jump-start the offense (the idea that an interim manager should get credit if that happens would be ridiculous).

Rumor from outside Baltimore is that after todays game Dave Trembley will be fired. Replacement to join the team after the game will be Bobby Valentine, who will be joining the team before it departs from New York.

bring Davey Johnson back..he will fire up the young O's

Since the o's are in NY, I hear George Costanza might be available for our new GM. Can't be any worse.

AGREE with what Ken wrote. Thanks!!!

Thissounds exactly like a bush league move the Orioles would make.Fire an incompetent manager and replace him with an incompetent 3rd base coach and keep an incompetent pitching coach and batting coach and bench coach, who is supposed to be in charge of positioning in the infield and fundamentals.Makes perfect sense if you're McFail and Little Peter. And if they bring in a different manager and don't let him hand pick his own staff absolutely nothing will change. As Lee Mazzone said when he left this is the most dysfunctional, disorganized, undisciplined team he has ever seen.I for one totally concur.

The Orioles need "an interim" from outside the organization, who can manage and provide a blueprint to MacPhail for winter changes and some help for the new manager to come. Replacing for the inside continues the dysfunction.

An comment, a suggestion and a random funny observation:

Comment - I believe it was Sparky Anderson who said "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken s**t." Very, very true in this case. You can't manage execution.

Suggestion - If the Orioles lose a game on a costly error again, set up a rule that requires them to wear the next day their 1971 home uniforms. If I recall, they were Orange. ALL Orange. Keep 'em all polyester, too.

Random funny observation: I took the train to D.C. today and was reading the Sports page of the Examiner. Their back pages now have ads for "natural male enhancement." These were opposite a panel advertising that their commentators will now have available "additional column inches." Unintentional hilarity ensued.

Rick dempsey should get a shot at managing the orioles evev if it is on an intrem basis , maybe he would lite a fire under these guys

Anyone who suggests Rick Dempsey for manager should be tasered in the testicles repeatedly until a new manager is named

That is all.......

This year is done. Who cares if BROB , PIE, Gonzo or whoever else on the IR comes back. Take off a year and make a full recovery. Time to think next year and push back our collective dreams of a .500 season to 2012. Next year we will need:
3B SS LF 1B probably a starter or two when we trade Guthrie and Millwood. If we draft another HS prospect, add 4yrs until they are ML ready. Since we lose our second round pick, God only knows who we will wind up with in the third round. And with our track record of picks--this year looks to be horrible. We can only hope for first pick next year.

Can we call Tire World and see if Lou Brown is available? He may have a guy on the other line about some white walls...

It's not Dave Trembley's fault, It's George Bush's fault.
George Bush hates the Orioles.
