Vacation update: Movie review
Since I was in Los Angeles, where this is absolutely nothing to do, I went to see Death at a Funeral with an old high school friend. It's the latest American rip-off of a successful British film or television series, and it was okay. It's hard not to like anything starring Chris Rock, but I thought he was largely wasted. In fact, I thought just about everyone in the movie was under-utilized. It was funny, but it wasn't funny enough.
Which brings me to the reason I came to California in the first place -- to eat every meal at a favorite fast food joint and attend a college newspaper reunion tonight at my alma mater, Cal State Fullerton.
Every year, I get more nostalgic for my college life, which was basically a string of Springsteen concerts occasionally interupted by a midterm examination. I wasn't a particularly good student, but I was a pretty good concert-goer. Unlike some of my classmates, I even remember some of them.

Hey Schmuck, if you get the chance, do yourself a favor and go eat at Wurstkuche in downtown LA. They serve some pretty unique brats including one made from duck and bacon. Really unique place you wont find anywhere else.

Have you eaten at Cole's French Dip or Phillipe's in downtown? Both claim to have invented the french dip sandwich. If so, do you have a preference? I'm personally a fan of Cole's.

Missing some good ball, Pete. O's offense is getting key hits and fighting hard.
I'd say the most encouraging thing is that Adam Jones seems to be adjusting to that low-and-away slider...he's laying off it more and making some contact on it as well.
Glad they had the guts to send Johnson down...he needs to get some confidence back.
UPDATE: 3 RUN SHOT WIETERS!!
Posted by: Anonymous | May 1, 2010 8:43 PM
I don't even want Luke Scott on this team anymore, but if he has to be in the lineup, there's no reason at all why he should be batting fifth. What kind of protection does he offer anyone? Nice to see Jones, Markakis and Wieters heating up, let's face it, they are the present and future of this franchise.
Posted by: Jon in Chicago | May 1, 2010 8:53 PM
very nice to see the O's sending down players who won't perform.
I hope I am wrong about Adam Jones. I hope he keeps proving me wrong.
Weiters power starting to come.
Arietta and Tillman up soon...
Looks like the 3 time all star and leader in NL. doubles wasn't quite washed up yet, eh?
Looks like he was an excellent free agent pick up, eh?
Looks like this team is headed in the right direction for the first time in over 12 years!!!
Thanks AM
And yes, he will be "buying the bats " at just the right time like he said,
I think the plan looks pretty good for being in the 3rd year.
Year number 4 will be special I believe!!!

Getting somewhere?
Posted by: birdwatcher | May 1, 2010 10:29 PM
It wasn't all pretty, but a great win nevertheless.
I feel for those Redsox "nation" fans that spend money to see their team getting hammered.
Posted by: Mesotheliangelos | May 1, 2010 10:30 PM
I feel for those RedSox Nation fans, too, Meso. I feel elation, joy, giddiness. Is it possible that the O's are actually 3-2 against the Sux, after having been 2-16 last year? SWEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!!! Get out the brooms, B-more.

Wayne,
You enjoy your misery,
I'll enjoy the hope
Posted by: smitty | May 1, 2010 11:05 PM
I would say that more wins already against the Red Sox this year than last year is "getting somewhere"..with many more games to go.
How bout that bum Hobgood they picked?
He's starting to throw pretty good
How bout that throw in Patton that we got for Tejada?
How bout the trade that included Tillman?
Yeah, it's coming together
Posted by: smitty | May 1, 2010 11:10 PM
Looked at Tillman's stats after smitty's post.
Last I checked, he had a 6 something ERA. It's down to 4.05 now to go with 21 strikeouts and only five walks. He must be throwing pretty good these days.
Looked at Hobgood as well. He looks ok, but fellow 2009 draftee Ryan Berry is tearing up the league.
PS - Fun that they've got two wins against the Sox. A series win, huh? What a novel idea!
Posted by: not brooks | May 1, 2010 11:33 PM
nb You don't have a clue..
1st no hitter in 4 years for that league by Tillman..he's pretty special by most accounts and only like 22
Berry is like 4 years older and played college ball...
way more upside to Hobgood.
Our lower levels are chock full of good pitching prospects..You can either believe baseball people or you can believe the spin and hype on this blog
Don't fight it man you'll have to admit you were wrong about the plan either now or later...just get it over with
The truth will....you know the rest
Posted by: smitty | May 1, 2010 11:51 PM
smitty -
No need for the lesson on our pitching prospects. I'm right there with you.
Sorry I missed the news on Tillman. I work two jobs and, while I soak up as much baseball as I can in my free time, sometimes I miss a few things. If I miss something else, I'll let you know and you can get me up to speed again.
Also, despite the fact that I'm not as well-informed as you, I do know that Berry played college ball. And, for the record, I wasn't saying that he's going to be better than Hobgood in the long-run. Just that he looks at lot better than Hobgood right now.
And as far as the plan goes, I'm sticking with my original thoughts. The pitching will be good, as long as guys aren't rushed to the bigs, but unless Andy buys a big bat, this team isn't going to win a thing.
Posted by: not brooks | May 2, 2010 12:42 AM
I second Wurstkuche and I live right down the street too!
Posted by: Heitzie | May 2, 2010 1:31 AM
not brooks you are right, we need the big bat. While some of our players (Jones, JJ, Albers, Reimold) have had some trouble lately, one of the biggest problems is the lack of a big bat.
This is not the be all end all (see Texiera) but knowing there is a guy in the lineup who can knock in 1-3 runs with 1 swing of the bat is a big confidence booster in the rest of the line up. The O's lack that right now.
I absolutely believe we are a better team than 6-18, but not that much better. At best we have the talent to be a .500 team, and that is with a lot going our way. So far, it seems we have to count on everything going the other way.
I am still personally on the fence with the whole Andy McPhail experience. Our starting pitching has improved drastically with him. So has our minor league club. The big test is going to be Prince Fielder. He could end up staying where he is at, but if he hits free agency, as most expect, it has to be our highest priority of the decade to get him.
I know that it will be easy to say that a player of his caliber just won't want to play for the Orioles, but the office has to ignore that. He may or may not end up in the black and orange, but the O's offer has to at least match, if not top, the highest offer on the table.
It isn't a great puzzle, and won't be totally complete until everyone can actually put the pieces where they belong, but right now we are missing a huge piece, and based on the projected free agent market, Prince is probably the most likely candidate to fill the position. Besides, anything is better than Atkins.

Schmuck I am with you on the O's. They have enough talent to be around a .500 team. However, I also believe that after 12 years of losing, the O's have a major culture issue that AM has not addressed and which needs to be addressed before the O's ever become winners. (They should have started by not bringing Trembley back!) They need players like Dustin Pedioa (sp). If you watch him, he is a winner and has the confidence that he is going to beat you every time. He will do whatever it takes in the field or at the bat - but he’s going to beat you. Recently I was very pleased to hear Tejada say bring on the best (Boston and the Yanks) as it may bring out the best in the O's. That is the kind of confidence the O's as a team are lacking. The manager should be the one instilling that kind of confidence, but Trembley looks for excuses and with BRob and MGonzalez on the DL, he has them. I said it before and I will say it again, we need to shake things up to change culture of this team and organization. The players need to go all out the minute they step on the field and anything else should not be tolerated. I can remember when the O's were winning; we seem to plug guys in like with average talent Lowenstein and they would produce because it was somehow expected. Today you plug in players and they fail because somehow it OK on the O's. If the O’s are ever going to be winners, as much as talent, the O’s need to work on instilling a winning attitude through out the organization.

As you all know i am one of the orioles harshest critics. However besides showing some heart the last 2 nights i finally have to give them some credit for finally doing something right. And that is sending down Jim Johnson. instead of sugar coating the situation like they always do. He has been strugglling since last year and everybody always seemed to ignore it saying he will be alright , his arm isn't tired enough for his singer to sink or he doesn't know what his role is. He has just stunk up the field and by sending a so called veteran down they get instant creditablility with all the other players. Now when you don't perform anybody can and should be sent down or removed. What is all thsi bull crap every night with i am sorry i let my team mates down or i know it was my fault , either perform and be accountable or find another place to play.. So my hats off finally to the decision makers on thei team for finally doing the right thing instead of dancing around the issue. Good Job.

The real victim here is Kevin Millwood. Bergeson pitched like crap and gets a win, Millwood has a 3.38 ERA and is 0-3.
O's need to finish the deal and wax Beckett and his 7.22 ERA today.
Anyone else think York Revolution lefty76ers forward Mark Hendrickson was left in 3 batters too long last night? That got bad fast.
Posted by: SHAMROCK | May 2, 2010 9:32 AM
Shamrock, I agree with you about Hendrickson being left in too long. Also, why did Trembley feel compelled to bring in Simon to close the game with a 3-run lead after Meredith easily got three batters out in the eighth? Isn't Simon coming off Tommy John surgery? After using him Friday night, why use him unnecessarily so he is now unavailable to pitch today? Even when there is some improvement in other areas (like hitting the long ball), Trembley's misuse of the bullpen continues to confound me.

Pete,
I LOVE going to see films when in LA.
The etiquette of film goers in LA is A+, for I guess obvious reasons. As soon as the lights go down the Silence if deafening. Even eating popcorn is silent. It's paradise...
Posted by: paulie | May 2, 2010 11:42 AM
Of course I also LOVE going to Red-Sox and Yankees games when the O's win, too.
There are just so many of them, you're voice is gone halfway through the 7th!!
The incredulous look of the Sox fans last night was worth the price of admission.
O's fan:
"Your little Red Sox just lost a series to the Worst team in Baseball, comments?"
Sox fan:
"Oh yeah, well, we'll be in the playoffs..."
O's fan:
laughter.
"you think you guys look like a playoff team loosing to the Orioles???"
...and then they explain to O's fans how the O's aren't are as bad as the record indicates, or how good the talent on the team really is...oh yeah, and how much Dice K stinks.
fun.
Posted by: paulie | May 2, 2010 11:57 AM
With everything that has happened to this team... With being the worst franchise in the game.... With having to endure being the continued laughingstock of baseball....
I still enjoyed the last 2 nights - somewhat!
Winning always matters and it always beats the alternative, 100 out of 100 times.
Still though, having out of town fans taking over your home park is more difficult than can be put into words. For you who don't attend series such as this, you can't possibly feel the embarrassment by just watching on tv.
Oh sure, it's nice seeing Sox fans walking out of the Yard in disgust. Problem is, it shouldn't be like this in the first place.
Let there be no mistake, this is like a home series for the Red Sox. The good thing for the O's however, The Sox have a losing home record in 10'.
A sweep would be fun by the way. That would really piss the Sox fans off.
Don't know about you, but I believe Sox fans are 10x worse than Yankee fans. At least the Yanks can boast about 27 WS's. They're allowed to be obnoxious. Sox fans however, define classless.
Posted by: wayne | May 2, 2010 12:39 PM
I hope we don't go with the Sunday lineup because a sweep would be a big confidence builder for this team especially the way they had to fight for both wins.
A few weeks back I was hoping JJ would go to the minors because his confidence is shot since he attempted to be the closer when George was dealt, but my only concern is that I hope they don't leave him in the minors for just a few games because I don't like the fact Bergy was brought up after 1 minor league start. I honestly believe he needed 4-5 starts to shake off the rust of missing so much time at the end of 09 and dealing with the injury from the commercial. He got the win, but didn't look good and I would hate to see him up and down all season because they rushed him back.
Very impressed with Simon, as he seems to be one of the few pitchers to realize what an opportunity there is for anyone to pitch in the BP. He's looked good all 3 games he's played. The funny thing is Koji could be a huge X factor as a setup man because I think both Cla and Castillo are pretty good in the 6th and 7th innings, but the O's don't have a setup man so hopefully he comes back strong and the BP becomes a positive.

I'm glad the team is showing some life and things have turned around at least a bit, but I only hope this doesn't save Trembley's job. He is so clueless right now it is unbelievable.
Just some recent examples:
1. Last night in the first inning with Nick is on first with a run in - there is no way, the combination of Dice K's delivery and Martinez throwing - gets Nick on a steal, but he doesn't send him - I suppose to "keep the hole open for Weiters - Weiters hits into a double play
2. Then an inning later, he send Wiggington, with Hughes up and no one out - a) Hughes more likely to strike out, b) Wiggington will be easily thrown out - result strike out - throw out dp
3. Today - Jones on first - Nick up - Jones doesn't steal - double play
4. This one is really unbelievable - chance to sweep the Sox and you sit your 3 hitter - you want to give him a day off behind the plate - DH HIM!!!!! Scott is a joke - O's DH's are 11th in the league in batting.
5. Last night - up 2 he has Hughes holding the runner - I was behind first base screaming to play behind - literrally on the last pitch to Drew he moved 2 steps off and made the diving play to get the second out - before that - that's a hit. Any coach of a 12 year old team knows that baseball 101 -
it is hard to watch - he obviously knows baseball, but I think the game just goes too fast for him sometimes and he seems to make his next move based on his last failure.
