Preakness: Not any more
I felt a little guilty taking money out of Pimlico at this difficult time for the racing industry, so I'm now intentionally betting on bad horses and have recently slipped below sea level. So it goes.

ok, how about posting the stats for bedard and sherrill for the last 2 years...
Posted by: jim66 | May 15, 2010 8:04 PM
here's another one...rummage thru and post the stats of all of the free agents the Os should have signed
Posted by: jim66 | May 15, 2010 8:08 PM
blahblahblah..i too read the inane article by the guy from seattle, who basically says, hey, that trade, not so bad. Look, we gave up a bunch of young guys for a guy who has basically sh*t the bed for us, but don't worry, he could be the difference maker this year in our drive to the pennant. And look, if we didn'y make that horrendous trade, and get rid of a bunch of young guys and take on a bunch of salary, we'd never have our CF, and the old GM would still have his job. Boy didn't that work out!! Yay for us!!! Talk about the Law of Unintended Consequence kicking in.
Please, that guy should be working PR for the Mariners. If Schmuck wrote that, he's be fried for being an apologist...it's all water under the bridge folks, the deal is to move forward.
Posted by: jim66 | May 15, 2010 8:23 PM
Sherrill's numbers are from his time with Baltimore.
Bedard is hurt.
Who are the free agents the O's should have signed? If you want to "rummage thru", have at it.
Posted by: Dirk Diggler | May 15, 2010 8:25 PM
jim66, what the hell are you babbling about? I simply posted the statistics for the people involved in that trade, then the Sherrill deal since it involves a player from the Bedard trade.
I didn't spin anything, put my two cents in, approve or disapprove, whatever. People are always pointing to that trade in one way or another, so there's the numbers.
And if you want to talk water under the bridge, you might as well give that up. There's been talk of Tex on this blog today.

Dirk, the point in posting those numbers?
i don't exactly know what the point is in revisting that trade. The Ms gambled, got nothing. They got an injured pitcher and never made the playoffs, which is what I thought was the intent of that trade for them. For the Os, get a bunch of highly regarded talent in here to have at least a few players in the minors. The jury is still out on a few of the guys the O's got back...

sorry... was that the card for the 7th race or something today? Thought this was a Chuckasness post?
What was the attendance today? There is no way there were more than 25k in the infield. Everyone was squished into concert area and beer garden. Turns 3 and 4 looked empty on the blimp view (which the local suck-up networks barely showed. I bet the O's out drew the Chuckasness infield Friday night.
The most important thing to Preakness is a strong handle. What good does 25k people on the infield watching a concert, playing foosball and sucking O2 do for the handle? I would like to think that a 70k infield at $65 a head would have done some damage.
They lost millions today with lower ticket prices, selling beer slightly over cost, distracting bettors with MLB Fanfest-type nonsense and above all else, a puny infield turnout.
Heard a lot about Chick Lang today and how he would try anything to pack Preakness. What the hell does a tent with Madden in it do to promote horseracing? Guess they had to wait until Mr Preakness died to run it into the ground and move it.
I cannot fathom what good today did for MD racing.

apologies dirk...the only time i see those numbers posted is in a a prelude to an AM beatdown...
Posted by: jim66 | May 15, 2010 8:48 PM
omg, Brian Matusz is a magician.
getting outta that sticky 7th inning was pretty nice....but he did do it to himself, getting into it.
Posted by: paulie | May 15, 2010 8:54 PM
Yo,
Ty Wigginton is just trashing AL pitching. Yeah ok he's in a contract year, but considering how he played last year and compared to the rest of the O's line-up, Wiggy has really done a nice job!
I told you so.
The truth will set you free!

Well then, sorry for utilizing smartassery in my reply.
Basically, it was Bedard for 6 players in the end. Bedard MAY be of a help to them. So far he's been what we thought he was (right, Coach Green errr..wayne?), which is an injury prone money pit.
Jones has put up some good numbers, but has a ways to go before being dependable. Tillman remains to be seen. Mickolio has shown flashes amongst the blow ups he's had. Butler seems to be getting worse, but we'll see. Sherrill gave good service and was dependable. Bell has good potential if he can be more selective. Johnson's numbers look good and I don't know anything about him.
So far, Bedard has pitched a season's worth of games in two and change. Just based on Jones and Sherrill vs. Bedard, advantage Orioles, IMO.

is the rose off the bloom? yep
Posted by: jim66 | May 15, 2010 9:36 PM
4 walks and 3 hits from the pen tonite. only a matter of time before a closer with a whip of 1.5 spit the bit, in horseracing terms.couple more of those and its next up all over again.
Posted by: jim66 | May 15, 2010 9:41 PM
dammit Simon.
goes back to the little things.
Jones K on junk in the dirt. STOOOPPPP!!!!
Pop-ups on 3-1 counts.
Can't score runners off 3rd w/ less than 1 out (no... Trembley tries to steal second? What does Patterson do? Fly to center.)
Simon should have been gone after the 2nd single. He is a mess. On the tight rope all year.
Posted by: SHAMROCK | May 15, 2010 9:41 PM
no sham, this goes back to not having a bona fide major league closer available, or maybe even on the roster. Almost every win has been a real chore for this team.
We all know it takes about 3 games for the scouting reports to get around the league.
Pull back the curtain, and what have you got? Another hard throwing guy who has barely a clue where the ball is going when it leaves his hand...
Posted by: jim66 | May 15, 2010 9:53 PM
Simon is about as much of a closer as anyone else on that bullpen roster, and honestly, that is not saying much. He's not even a year removed from TJ surgery. He's just the only guy the Os have now, and in a few weeks, if things move ahead as is normal for this year, Wayne will dump him and he'll be back at Norfolk, tired, and trying to find the strike zone.
He's a feel good story and all, but he almost coughed it up last time out, and today he figured he'd finish the job.
I'm practical, and figured 75 wins or so this year, with some improvement from the young players would be about it.. But damn, holding tryouts for the closer position in mid-May ain't exactly the way to get it done.

What people are forgetting is.... because Jones was shipped out, Seattle now has one of the best CF'ers in the AL. You can have Adam:::-)
Posted by: Thank you Andy - From Seattle Sam | May 15, 2010 11:05 PM
and you still have a losing team with a hefty payroll that this year wasted a few minor leaguers for a one-year stab at the playoffs, have a 40 yr old guy way past his prime at DH, and a free agent second baseman that cost you a decent chunk of change hitting a robust 185. Nice work.
You wear it well.
AM has got nothing on you.
Posted by: jim66 | May 16, 2010 12:46 AM
Haha Seattle Sam
jim66 FTW
Posted by: Dirk Diggler | May 16, 2010 8:47 AM
Good points all Jim66. I'll still take our CF'er over yours every day. It's not even close. And I'll also take my chances with a team that attempts to make a run rather than never having a clue or a chance in hell out of the gate. Our front office will keep trying. Your front office will continue to be the joke it is known to be. I just wish Seattle were a little closer to Baltimore so we too could take over your stadium like everyone else does.
Posted by: Thank you Andy - From Seattle Sam | May 16, 2010 12:08 PM
OK, and what then do you do when you run out of minor league talent to trade and money as you end up with a bunch of underperforming overpaid free agents?
Don't look now, but for all that offseason maneuvering, your team has a couple more wins than the O's. And the O's took 2 of 3 last trip in. Hey, I wish the Os were in the ALWest! They'd be right in the thick of things...
Posted by: jim66 | May 16, 2010 1:09 PM
4-2 against the Orioles. I realize the concept of winning is foreign to guys like you, but at least our guys are trying and everyone in baseball will put money behind our chances over yours, every day. And are you still doing that whole Al East crying? How about you beat the AL West teams first, then start crying unfair about your divisional fate. Until then, you really need to stop kidding yourselves. 4 and 2 is 4 and 2 is 4 and 2. Last I checked anyway.
Posted by: Thank you Andy - From Seattle Sam | May 16, 2010 1:30 PM
at least our guys are trying
Means nothing, wins and losses mean something. Ask Wayne, Gil...and the list goes on and on..One day wins count, next day effort counts...go figure
Not crying about the AL East. The O's need to be a lot better to compete in the AL East - they cannot even beat teams in the AL West. No argument there. But you are naive to think the AL West has as good a teams, top to near bottom, than the AL East. That is just silly, and you know it. Your chances are enhanced because you play in a weaker division.
And after all that, you still have just a few more wins.
Posted by: jim66 | May 16, 2010 5:56 PM
Lost 2 of 3 to that juggernaut in Cleveland
Be reasonable people. They are rebuilding. You cant expect to beat a team smack dab in the middle of rebuilding
