Dinner for Schmucks

So, I'm hearing that the new Paul Rudd/Steve Carrell movie -- Dinner For Schmucks -- has sparked some controversy over the appropriateness of the title. The television networks apparently are going to restrict commercial trailers of the movie to 9 p.m. and later, and the producers of the film will have to walk a tightrope in some foreign markets.

If this is something that you find interesting, you might want to check out this New York Times article on the subject. Or you can check out the trailer below:

Personally, I don't see what all the commotion is about, but that's what I thought back in California when I tried to get the word on my personalize license plate. Or when I tried to bond with relief pitcher J.J. Putz.

I've got only one problem with Hollywood exploiting the sacred Schmuck name to sell a movie. I haven't been invited to any premiers or screenings. You'd think being the most famous Schmuck in the mainstream media (if you don't count Bill Maher) would get you that much.

(if you don't count Bill Maher)....

That right there is funny!

I'm no Maher fan, but let's not forget about Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. Although I think they're more in jackass territory.

I find it a good idea to avoid talking politics since every one has their own opinion. One thing we can all agree on, however, is how god awful the Orioles are.

CIH,

for once we're on the same page. though I'd call Rush & Glenn much worse than that... f-head $h!t faces, perhaps. gee, now i sound about 13. but, so do they!

funny film/trailer, funny about networks and Schumuck, funny too about John Maier.

Have you seen the documentary "This Film Not Yet Rated" (2006) about the Politics/Power/Process of getting Films rated...unbelievable! Lots of John Waters comments in the film about vulgarity and word play.

and "Dinner For Schmucks" story reminds me of "The Last Supper" (1995)...just not nearly as dark.

Seriously, I hope I never meet Rush or Glen Beck as I don't think I would have it in me to not practice some Tony Jaa knee-bombs on them.

Oh, and today's loss officially OFFICIALLY signifies we are the worst team in the majors. Any time you can't work more than a single walk off a guy throwing 55% (rounded up) strikes, you have an awful approach at the plate.

paulie,

Dinner for Schmucks is a remake of the French film, The Dinner Game.

And I saw This Film is Not Yet Rated. Good stuff.

Wow, tough schedule.

MLB is merciless making us play the Royals right after the Indians

We were in it the whole time right up until the end

This was one of those moral victories

Woo Hoo

no moron,

moral victories are when you play a team tough that you have no business playing with. (ie splitting with the 1st place twins)

the past three games have been unmitigated disasters.

cute screen name though, cool guy.

If you are a major league team, no other MLB team should be "so tough that you have no business playing with them" lol

unless of course, the team is assembled by andy macfail. then the toledo mud hens are out of your league and so tough that the os have no business playing with them

CIH,

yeah, I'd known it was a remake, I guess I was trying to keep it simple.

funniest parts of "This Film Not Yet Rated" are the image of John Waters trying to explain "feltching" to the Ratings Board, and Kevin Smith thinking the NC-17 rating on "Clerks" was from the Girl-friend's Quantity of admitted Oral performances.

you are right. every night every team should be as good as their opponent, thus the entire league should finish 81-81.

There will always be superior and weak teams. When a David can compete vs a Goliath, that shows progress (moral victory). Did David have any business messing with big G? No.

Now when David is playing against his little sister? Shame on him for sucking.

But, I do like that you latch onto the literal meaning of every word. makes your responses smart. That and how much AM ruffles your feathers.

Keep making excuses Shammy poo

Your boy Andy does too

The Os gave a valiant effort against the mighty juggernaut from the rough and tumble al central.

Cant keep up with the Royals, not when Andy is putting together the roster. He might be on the verge of actually figuring out that Atkins stinks.

I posted Atkins wretched numbers all winter. Apparently Andy is incapable of pulling up stats about players. Someone get that man an internet connection!

Shamm You are always overjoyed when we lose by 3 instead of 6
U must be overjoyed with 1 run losses

U love "losing better"

"They were in it the whole game

At least we werent blown out"

It was a moral victory"

These are the stupid things that you actually say. I wouldnt even try to make it up because no one would believe someone could be such a loser

Are you from Calvert?

There was some dopey apologist on the fan today gleefully braggin that the Orioles were losing but "it was closer than last yr".

I cant believe that there is another living being who would say something so moronic

It had to be Shamalama Ding Dong

Speaking of the AAA Toledo Mud Hens

For 5/17/10

MUD HENS ATTENDANCE: 9,879

ORIOLES ATTENDANCE: 9,299

True story

I have an early draft of the screenplay if you'd like that in lieu of the screening or premiere. Let me know.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
