Watching Wakefield

It's interesting to watch the way hitters approach knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. I've heard them describe facing a good knuckleball as "trying to eat soup with a fork," but I'm always amazed at how eager they are to swing at it.

If you're watching Wakefield, who is the reigning knuckleball king, you probably have noticed how many of the K-balls he throws that end up up out of the strike zone, yet the Orioles hitters keep finding themselves in a two-strike count where they have to swing at the one that dives into the dirt.

Maybe I'm just an armchair warrior, but I've been counting strikes and balls -- based on location and not outcome -- and I think the best strategy is to stay completely off the knuckleball until there are two strikes. I'm guessing Wakefield would be behind on the count a lot more and would have to go to that 74-mile-per-hour fastball to keep from walking a bunch of guys. I could be crazy, but it sure seems like swinging at the knuckler early in the count right now is an exercise in futility.

You're not crazy at all, Pete.

Unfortunately no one (like their batting coach maybe?) told that to the O's today.

Miguel Tejada has seen 4 pitches in three ABs. And in two of those ABs he had guys in scoring position and swung at the first pitch.

Pathetic.

How does everybody like it now. 2& 16 soon to be 2&17 and there hasn't been one word from our illustrious Gm. Not one word about what is going on and how he intends to try and fix. it. Something even if it is a lie to try and bring a calming effect to a team in shambles.Andy you ought to be real proud of the job you have done with thsi team. And finally as much as i wanted Dave t fored at the end of last year , you ought to be ashamed of yourself for hanging him out to dry. If the fans of this town don't wake up and boycott these upcoming home games in protest then something is drastically wrong. This has to stop and stop now. The fans of this town have to show there out rage for being lied to. What a shame.

At least Hernandez is off the hook.

Congrats on your first no-decision, David!

I guess that's called progress...

Pete,

Did you see where Dave Trembley asked the second base umpire for his phone number instead of arguing the force out call at second base?

Even if Castillo retires Ortiz, I'm not for this pitching change. It's waaaay too by the book. Didn't matter when we went to the lefty last time vs. Ortiz, did it?

By the book is the best approach right now...Trembley's already getting enough undeserved criticism.

The reason it didn't work with Hendrickson (vs. Ortiz) is because Trembley panicked and brought him - and Berken - in without enough of a warm-up, like he did with Albers on Friday.

Trembley's starting to panic and THAT is what's starting to cost this team. Prior to this series, Trembley was hardly at fault (if at all)

PS: That bunt had me holding my breath. I'm surprised more guys don't do that (and practice it more) against the shift.

here it comes...

Who is gonna close? Johnson has pitched the part of the 8th and 9th. and now we are in extra innings.

Meredith...then who knows

billy hall's 1st rbi of the year!

what happened to koji?

OK...I have not been a fan of changing Managers but after this game Trembley should be done. He is almost managing to lose the game. I feel for him as the players have underperformed and injuries, but what gives w/ JJ pitching more than 2 innings?

Dude, have you been watching the O's?

Meredith was the ONLY other option...there was no way Ohman, Mickolio or Albers was coming in. Johnson had been effective for 1.1 IP, so it was smart to let him start the 10th. I think he should have come out at 7-5, but Trembley did nothing wrong going with Johnson in the 10th.

Seriously we need to save our bullpen , put a AD on Monster.com or craigslist for relievers, closers. Cause it seems they are going to be the issue all this season.

wow! cle meredith on the same the day. No worries!

winning is like better than losing....

Some food for thought...3 years ago McPhail thought he was a genius pulling off the Bedard trade. The Mariners GM soon was fired & we thought in 1 or 2 years the motherload he brought in would lead us to the Promised Land. We're still waiting...Tillman is getting slapped around in AAA & only Jones has really worked out. In the meantime, Seattle has a new GM & he's cleaned house & brought in some exciting talent. The Mariners are once again moving upward & are playing good ball while the Orioles, in a year they were supposed to really hang tough, are playing the absolute worst baseball to be found anywhere. Trembley can not be held to blame for this disgusting on field product...there is only 1 man that assembled these amatures & imposters & that is McPhail. If he fires Trembley, then he better fire himself too!

this beat down of tillman has reached ridiculous proportions. he's 22 yrs old, and is down at AAA learning a couple of pitches. If he's just so bad, explain why he's the first named mentioned in any trade talks? Cause anybody who knows anything about major league talent knows he's nothing but tons of upside.
The deal is to get him up to the major leagues with an out pitch. The kid could spend the next 4 months at Norfolk throwing fastballs and curves and going 12-4, but what's the sense of that? Anybody out there tried to learn a new pitch or two recently, and get real live hitters out with it? Didn't think so...

Repeating what I wrote elsewhere (mostly in response to Christopher):

Again this misses the point of what David Trembley does not do to help his team win. No one blames him for everything that has gone wrong during this awful start to the season. But he certainly has his share of the blame. The list of faults from failing to make certain his players are ready to play from Spring Training, to having players play fundamental baseball, to acting like a manager and making it known that poor or lackadaisical play will not be tolerated, to being fluid in making your line-up and your offensive approach, to handling the bullpen, etc etc etc There is plenty of blame to place on the manager so lets not say he does not deserve to be fired.

Lets not forget the "I didn't notice" Lugo's lack of hustling on a play the other day. That's not the first time the coaching staff was not paying attention.

The man just wants to post a line-up and take a nap until he think he needs to take a lefty out to face a righty and vice-versa.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
