Vacation update: I'm so ashamed

So far, the only thing that feels like it's on vacation is my self-discipline. I tried to get through the drive from Los Angeles to Fresno yesterday with only one stop at In-and-Out Burger, but you probably know how that ended.

Badly?

Tastily?

Well, both. If you've had the No. 1 combo from In-and-Out, you understand that I had to make the second stop in Bakersfield. Now, before you show your ignorance and joke about what else there might be to do in Bakersfield, you need to show a little respect. The town may be the butt of some jokes in California, but it's the birthplace of country music legend Merle Haggard and was the home base of fellow country star Buck Owens.

If you want a less upbeat travelogue. Bakersfield was also the site of the infamous Onion Field murder, which was chronicled in the best-selling novel by Joseph Wambaugh and a 1978 movie starring James Woods, John Savage and Ted Savage.

Pete - what's your take on In & Out versus 5 Guys? I've had both and I like 5 guys. I took some of my west coast friends to 5 guys a few weeks ago and they (begrudgingly) admitted 5 guys was better. One friend raved about the fries for nearly 20 mins!

Pete's reply: I can't believe that a whole bunch of people all decided 5 Guys was better. I'm sure tastes vary, but I've had a lot of both and I just don't agree. I don't think it's even close.

The Neilsen Company projected today the Baltimore Orioles are the number 8 most hated team in MLB...WONDER IF ANGELOS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I guess that fans do get it like Wayne afterall....

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5146663

"Some of the others making the not-so top 10: Chicago White Sox (No. 7), Baltimore Orioles (No. 8), New York Mets (No. 9) and Los Angeles Dodgers (No. 10)".

PS please sell the team peter angelos you are a failure

PS

Baltimore is not a small market team the VA MD DC area is large enough market to fund an MLB team. We should be able to play the Sox and Yanks with no problem if we had a real owner and FO. We are sellouts and whores.

You forget this gem from The Rolling Stones Pete.

Far Away Eyes

(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield
Listening to gospel music on the colored radio station
And the preacher said, "You know you always have the
Lord by your side"

And I was so pleased to be informed of this that I ran
Twenty red lights in his honor
Thank you Jesus, thank you lord

I had an arrangement to meet a girl, and I was kind of late
And I thought by the time I got there she'd be off
She'd be off with the nearest truck driver she could find
Much to my surprise, there she was sittin in the corner
A little bleary, worse for wear and tear
Was a girl with far away eyes

So if you're down on your luck
And you can't harmonize
Find a girl with far away eyes
And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

Well the preacher kept right on saying that all I had to do was send
Ten dollars to the church of the sacred bleeding heart of Jesus
Located somewhere in Los Angeles, California
And next week they'd say my prayer on the radio
And all my dreams would come true
So I did, the next week, I got a prayer, and a girl
Well, you know what kind of eyes she got

So if you're down on your luck
I know you all sympathize
Find a girl with far away eyes
And if you're downright disgusted
And life ain't worth a dime
Get a girl with far away eyes

Pete, that's not shame--that's indigestion. We're proud of you!

I know you'd probably rather not think about work/ the O's, but since the Sun is still running your article on the 22 years since 1988 O's on its website, I thought I'd mention that the Tampa Tribune today reported that Rays attendance is at an abysmal season low, despite the team's major league-best won-loss record. They only got 10,000 per for their games against the A's.

I know it's a different situation than the O's (Rays have a terrible stadium far from the center of the region's population) but I thought it was an interesting plight the teams share.

Annon

I agree with you that Baltimore is not small TV or Sports market . Based on Census , the city itself is losing population , but counties of Baltimore , Harford , Carroll , Howard , Anne Arundel; Frederick plus the Eastern Shore areas also growing rapidly . The fact that Baltimore has only O's and Ravens means there should be balance with ticket inventory versus population .
Throw in the MASN and what do we get ?
Nice decent sports market .

Whenever Angelos said that Baltimore is small market and therefore , cannot afford the payrolls other than Yanks/RedSox/ Dodgers/Angels , we will know Angelos is lying through his teeth .

Speak for yourself, you gutless wonder. You won't reveal your identity, but you have the gall to refer to the people on this blog as "whores and sellouts". I am neither, and you can stick your remark up your gutless giggy!

Pete,

I was born and raised in California. You need to get the In N Out burgers with grilled onions, and also give the 'animal style' a try. Trust me. And In N Out is the best burger there is, without doubt whatsoever.

Speaking of In N Out, that reminds me of the Orioles. You know why? :-)

You are forgiven for IN and Out transgression, if I am absolved of mine when I visit Roy Rogers when I come east. BTW: Fun Fact - Joe Wambaugh's kid punched me in the nose at the Crystal Bay Club in N Lake Tahoe in the early 80's. It did not end well for him as I was a cop at the time.

dave taylor

This area as a whole are sellouts and whores for letting the Orioles become this joke. Last night summed it up. Angelos went out of his way to make Baltimore New York for the night. We are all to blame!

As a wise man says from time to time on this blog:

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE!!

What, only New Yorkers can find Tracy Morgan hilarious? C'mon. I would have been psyched to see Morgan throw out the first pitch.

And Pete, next time you're in an In and Out, kiss your fries with your fist (and your burger with your lips).

Wow, these comments are absolutely priceless. There is nothing better than when two people start attacking each other on a personal level or a MLB franchise. Please, Dave Taylor, anonymous, etc. don't give up the fight, you all provide some serious entertainment for people sitting at a desk all day

Absolutely Hilarious

hahhaa I do this to escape my desk...

Chris in Hawaii
Its not just Morgan throwing out the first pitching wearing a Brooklyn shirt lol even though that was pretty sad.. Look how pathetic it is now when NYers come to town!! I barely even saw an Orioles fan in the place…

Pete,

With you out of town who at the Sun is going to cover the Lingerie Football League tryouts this weekend?
http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/bs-ae-lingerie-football-20100427,0,7710355.story

.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: That was just amazingly poor planning by me.

Rusty,

Is Amber Theoharis trying out for the Lingerie Football League?

Anonymous,

You're a coward!!!! Post your real name and address while you're at it. If you're so ashamed of this town and of the O's then get out!!! We don't want you and we don't need you. It's easy to bash a team when they're down no matter how long it's been. You're dislusional and irrationale when it comes to your conclusions!! Spare us the agony and please move to New York.

Are the Orioles improving?

1st set of 10 games 1 - 9
2nd set of 10 games 3 - 7
3rd set of 10 games 0 - 1

4 - 17

Pete, what do you and the bloggerheads think of my idea for a new Adam Jones bobblehead? It will depict Jones leaning over the plate flailing pitifully at a bad breaking ball in the dirt while blowing a bubble. The caption will be "Fleer Strikes Out."

What's the matter, not enough humor left in the season for the healing power of laughter?

Gil & the rest of the naysayers,

We get it!!! The Orioles are bad. We don't need to be reminded of this day in and day out. There's absolutely no need to beat down on this team more than they already have been. I'm a diehard Orioles fan and season ticket holder. I love my team. It absolutely kills me to have to watch them struggle the way they do. The last thing we need is fairweather fans beating them while they're down. It's funny but these same bashers are nowhere to be found when the O's win. You don't like the O's?? We get it!! Fine it's justifiled. You've made your point over and over. Time to move on or shut up!!

Peace!!!

Girardi is "upset" and "frustrated" at Guthrie for plunking Posada. Girardi says Guthrie has no "command" and "hits a lot of people."

What a joke.

Typical NY Yankees self-aggrandizement.

CC hit 9 guys in 2009, same as Guthrie. Burnett his 10. Joba hit 12!

Think Joe has a problem there?

Here are more of my comments: http://curseofdaveyjohnson.blogspot.com/2010/04/typical-ny-yankees-self-aggrandizing.html

BECKETT HAS HAD A FEW BAD STARTS ON A GOOD TEAM, TIME TO KICK HIM TO THE CURB ALSO. GIVE THESE KIDS A FEW MORE THAN 3 STARTS BEFORE WRITING THEM OFF.

Kenny, we are in rare agreement here. Of course Guthrie has no command, If he did he wouldn't have given up 35 home runs last year. But you go with what you got and since Macphail says we can't compete with the Yankees and Red Sox in payroll, they get Sabathia, we get Guthrie. I guess he is inferring that the Orioles should get some pitchers who have better control, so that his million dollar lineup doesn't get plunked. He'll have to take that up with Macphail. As long as he is the GM in Baltimore Girardi's hitters may be ducking when playing the Orioles. He should stop whining anyway, I remember a day back in 1993 when Yankee pitcher Tim Leary hit several Orioles including Chris Hoiles, breaking Hoiles' wrist.

He should stop whining anyway

Says Gil as he whines about MacPhail for the millionth time.

The O's high despised ranking is a surprise for a couple of reasons. Other than a few diehards here, no one seems to care one way or the other about the O's, except the teams that beat them so why would they give a bad rating?
Baseball is dying a slow death in Baltimore and in other cities as evidenced by dwindling attendance. Hate is a pretty strong work-apathy is more like it!
Even in this once lively blog, the posters are the same hard-core group; many who come here to complain or pick fights with those who happen to have a difference of opinion. I guess you could say that many here 'despise' the O's but personally, disappointment is more accurate.

Wayne: I wear a bag while you watch masn

Just so I get this right...you pay good money to go watch a team that is owned by a guy you despise, GM'd by someone you've called a disgrace, play a losing brand of baseball that you alternatively laugh/rant about, wear a bag on your head during the game, then callout others who post on the blog as the idiots, then complain yourself about the namecalling.

Does that about sum it up? Or am I missing something?

Posted by: The WorldHasSlippedOffItsAxis | April 29, 2010 2:23 PM

Gil:

For what it's worth - Guthrie said the same thing after he was told of Girardi's comments - he wished he'd have had better command too, so that he might have won.

Girardi's a joke. Managing a 200-million dollar club chock-full of All-Stars and free agents ... tough work. Takes a real genius to pencil Jeter/A-Roid/Cano/Granderson, etc. and have CC, Burnett, etc. on the mound.

But it's just BS that he would make comments about Guthrie like that. He should be apologizing to Guts - not the other way around. He has every right to come inside on these overpriced prima donna Yankees who think they own baseball.

Kenny,

Girardi should know Guthrie cant pitch... hes seen the tape on Guthrie plunking people... Guthrie has even came out before and admitted even he cant pitch.. I guess if anything we should all just be mad Guthrie is a starting pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles...

I understand though why Girardi is pissed though when a bad player injures a great one and all...

WTF?!?!!?! IM WATCHING NBA THIS IS JUST SAD.... WHO IS THIS PERSON BEING INTERVIEWED AND WHO THE SCHMUCK GIVES A CRAP OMG HAHAHAHA THAT ON TOP OF THIS HORRIBLE INFIELD.... SCREW THIS

So who will be throwing out the first pitch for the Boston series?? Mark Wahlberg?? I know the Orioles like to welcome the other teams fans and make them feel at home and all

Girardi is a guy who forgets that is managing ARod, Jeter, Tex, CC and this year's MVP - Cano, and all along the way he decided he has something to do with their winning. What kind of moron makes comments about like that about an opposing player, particularly when his team regularly leads the league in beanballs - ask Mike Piazza. Matusz has awesome command, so he should drill Cano.

Anonymous:

I'd love to see the quote where Guthrie "admitted even he cant (sic) pitch."

Are the Orioles going to play sweet Caroline instead of country boy tomorrow??

Kenny,

I am not going to post guthries crazy quotes on here but if you follow the orioles you would know..
All guthrie does is plunk people and play like shit!! Then he makes smug remarks like he cant pitch... the guy is telling the truth!! Listen!

HEY HEY HEY!

HERE I COME!!!!

WOW! They probably told Albers if he didnt pitch well tonight the buffet would off limits in the clubhouse…

Anonymous:

So let me get this straight ... you can't find any quotes where Guthrie admitted he can't pitch?

1. I have followed the O's very closely since the '70s.
2. Guthrie hit 9 guys last year. Same as CC Sabathia.
3. It's an important part of a pitcher's game to come inside. Few O's did it in recent years and it was part of the reason they had little success.
4. Guthrie had one bad year and everyone turns on the guy.
5. Don't blame him for taking fault for a bad performance last night. Isn't it refreshing to hear a guy say, "I'm sorry fans had to pay money to see me." At least he cares. I wouldn't call them "smug remarks." No one works harder than he.

Kenny,

Hes a bum. No serious team would start him. End of story.

Right, no team wants a guy that pitches 200 innings a year, doesn't get hurt, and has a lifetime 4.29 ERA. That makes sense, "Anonymous."

Allright Kenny next time Cano gets up we need to bring in Guthrie to plunk him... Agreed??

As I said earlier tonight on the "Orioles Insider" blog ... Cano's a beast. He will be in the MVP discussion this year. Good for the Yankees - they really needed a bat.

I M wearriing a Bagget oVer MY Haed is I look at tihs Bolg

Is Wyane and GiL GONe Yeeet???!!!

They got bats other than Cano... Tex and aroid will come around.. Red Sox are the ones who need a bat.. They are just like us with a collection of 2 and 3 hitters all over the lineup

Hey Gol (and Wayne if you are out there) I know you guys hang out together on here.

You really don't like Macphail or his moves this offseason?

Really? Cmon man! I thought you were still deciding.

Finally you admit you hate the way Macphail has tricked everyone and wants to lose...

Don't take so long next time...Tell everyone you don't like what's going on...
Go on record again....

I mean "cause all us positive folks we Love losing man. We hope we can lose for 3 more years and then winning will be even sweeter.

"Success is counted sweetest by those who ne'er succeed, to comprehend the nectar requires sorest need...."

Why do I always have the feeling that the guys who ask about wayne and gil are actually wayne and gil?

Part of me thinks Burnett looks great tonight. The other part of me realizes the O's make most pitchers look good.

Sorry Gil Iknow you are are a Gil and not a Gol....

Gils Gols Gals i feel a schong coming on

In response to my line, "Good for the Yankees - they really needed a bat," Anonymous said:

"They got bats other than Cano... Tex and aroid will come around.. Red Sox are the ones who need a bat.. They are just like us with a collection of 2 and 3 hitters all over the lineup"

Guess my sarcasm didn't translate online. I do realize the Yankees have some other bats in their lineup. Their nightly 7th or 8th hitter would be batting 4th in Baltimore.

Who exactly is this Kenny and is he really from Pikesville????

What's up with Mariano? The guy must've made a deal with the devil. Will be 41 in November and hasn't lost a thing. Great as ever ... and he was great. Almost unfair.

Since the start of the '08 season he has 89 saves and has blown THREE. Gonzo almost matched him in a week.

This team should be better - WOW do we miss Roberts ( jones should be batting last and playing the field where he is told) Jones has the worst on-base percentage on the team. Scott should bat 8th or not at all. Please hire a new Manager I really think it got to start there, he has definetly lost this team. What manager dickers with his centerfielder to play in or out. JUST DO IT!!! OR SIT!!! Like com'on how can players take leadership like that, this is a team in need of desperate tough love or at least some toughness without the love.

Is Xavier Avery able to play CF? Can he displace Adam Jones?

And is there a better alternative then Luke Scott?

I don't think I sayed he would be displaced. He should be pushed down the order till he hits with some discipline. As for Scott, I don't care who replaces him, he is the streakest hitter in baseball and how do hang your hat on that. To much cold not enough hot, give someone a chance. Jones should become a star but he'll need a few hard kicks in the a$$ first. Enough Babying.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........................................

Another depressing loss. What to say?

The O's ran into a very good pitcher at the top of his game. True, but that argument might be more convincing if they didn't make EVERY pitcher they face look like Cy Young. I don't see players slacking off; everyone, or almost everyone, seems to be playing hard. They're doing their best. They're just good enough. TB, NY, and Boston (even Oakland, Seattle, and Toronto!) have better players. We might have a few of comparable talent, though not yet comparable accomplishment (Wieters and Matusz), but on the whole, not.

What's obvious is that this season was lost in the winter, when AM and PA didn't do what they needed to do. The critics on the blog are quite right about that. Whether management's passivity was due to overconfidence, incompetence, or just plain cheapness are open questions. We can surmise but we don't know. Peter Schmuck has said, with conviction, that PA desperately wants to win. The doubters say that PA doesn't give a damn and cares only about money. Who's right? No way to know. What's pretty obvious is that when you add up the potential fan base and income from MD, northern VA, southern PA, and DC, not to mention MASN and revenue sharing, this is not a small market team. A $120m
payroll would seem quite feasible.

So why isn't there a better team on the field? I suggest two possible reasons, which are mutually exclusive--one or the other may be true, but not both.

1. The owner cares about winning, but has put his confidence in a GM who is a mixed bag of strengths and weaknesses. AM is in the process of restocking the farm system and has traded for some good young players. These are necessary steps and will strengthen the team in the long run. His weaknesses: he sometimes makes terrible mistakes in evaluating talent (Gonzalez, Atkins), doesn't understand the importance of hitting (BALANCED teams win championships), is hung up on the Cubs organization and their products, is unresponsive to international talent (Sano, Chapman), is slow and passive in the face of opportunity, seems to be terrified of risk, settles for second or third best with alarming regularity, thinks that a team made up of good young talent fresh up from the minors can defeat teams that have some of the best players in baseball, and seems congenitally incapable of signing top tier players. In sum, the weaknesses outweigh the strengths, by a large margin, in my view. The owner, however, obviously disagrees.

2. The owner really doesn't give a damn, and cares only about maximizing profits.

Assuming that 2 is false, and 1 MAY be true (in whole or in part), what can we--bloggers, fans, baseball media--do to help things along in the right direction? Calling each other names on the blog, while fun for a bit, gets old. (Lead posts about burger joints in CA also don't do much for the cause.) Here are some ideas. Would love to hear yours.

1. Baseball media start making a fuss, and I mean a BIG fuss. Peter Schmuck's recent piece on how angry fans are getting was one of his best columns and a good start. More in this vein would be very helpful. No one likes to be called out in public; such a campaign would produce results, I suspect.

2. More fuss at home games--boos, paper bags, signs, etc.

3. Maximum pressure via media, blogs, letters to PA, etc., DURING THE WINTER, which is WHEN THINGS COUNT. If everyone loses focus then in favor of football, management gets a free pass to sit on their hands for another year.

4. Last resort--stay away from the Orioles. Just don't go. Embarrassingly small crowds will have an effect.

5. ?

Cynicism isn't the answer. Let's DO something!

Sorry, error in line 4, above. I meant, of course:

They're just NOT good enough.

How about that Burnett ? Did he really shut O's down tonight ? Only 3 measly hits ? I guess that what happens when you PAY MARKET RATE for talent .
Too bad Yardsale MacPhail doesnt understand that .

What is O's batting average for RISP ? Something like .150 ? Wow , Batting Coach Terry Crowley is such a genius . Maybe O's should nominate Crowley for Hall Of Fame !!!!

4-18 , and the beatings contiunes.........

Holy Iceberg ! Only 26 thousand Yankee fans tonight ?

In-and-Out is better than 5 Guys, although I only went to an In-and-Out only twice -- once when my daughter did an internship/vocational camp at Loyola Marymount and once when I drove back from Indian Wells to fly out of LAX.

Ahh, but these days I must watch my sodium count (and other things), so neither is on my to-do list. Good for you, Pete. I think.

I do check in even though I haven't been posting. I have nothing to say.

Matt Albers does remind me of a right-handed Brad Pennington, though -- in how they pitch, that is. I don't know how they eat their burgers.

Allan,
With regards to your comment on Burnett, can you really say "that's what happens when you pay market rate for talent"? You make it seem like only top pitchers can 4-hit the O's... we all know that's not true and have proven it several times this season already!

Enjoy the Vacation Pete... Trembley will still be here when you get back and so will the L's...

The more I eat Five Guys, the less I like it. Most times, I can hear my arteries clogging. No comparison to In 'n Out. Wifey and I took a trip out to northern Cali a couple years ago, ended up eating In 'n Out two nights in a row. It was money. And the paper hats the folks wear are nifty, too.

Pete, McPhail gets one more chance this winter to fulfill promise and "buy a bat" for first base. If they do not, I am out. I live in Phoenix now and will watch the Angels on MLB.TV, a good team that plays like the Orioles used to.

What is on the animal style burger and in and out?

LOOKING IN THE DUGOUT LAST NIGHT, I THINK I SAW ROY HOBBS SITTING THERE. MAYBE WE SHOULD GIVE HIM A CHANCE ONE OF THE NAMES I'M HEARING IS PHIL GARNER, BUT THAT'S JUST SPECULATION WHY NOT TRY LEE MAZILLI AGAIN

Here extending the longest wish that you DO NOT RETURN! Get lost in SAc!

A Fan:

Excellent post. Articulate and well-written. Wish this blog was full of those.

I happen to think the only one of your ideas that really could be implemented is #1. The media does have the power to get something done. And I'm not saying constantly berating the owner/GM/organization will do any good.

The problem is, as it seems to me, is that The Sun is not going to launch an effort to irritate one of their few big advertisers. In today's print market, there's little if any ad dollars rolling in. You think Tribune Media is going to let the measly sports writers of The Baltimore Sun tear into a sizeable chunk of their ad revenue? I mean, look at the Sun's website every day - there's always Orioles ad banners.

The bottom line with The Sun - and with the Orioles organization - is that money talks. Don't expect anything other than a surface criticism here and there.

So is Wayne now going by fan. What's his new handle?

Pete. Enjoy a double double and a strawberry shake for me. I miss In N Out. Also, I hope you find a good job opportunity back home. It's obvious now that the Sun is pushing you out the door. I have to dig now to find your blog on the Sun site. Pathetic. You need to find a real news organization to work for and a real baseball team to cover.

Mr. Angelos, please sell the team!

I love the Orioles, but at this point I'm rooting now for the Orioles to continue their implosion all season long so that something drastic will happen. I'm rooting for Trembley to get fired soon, for AM to lose his job at the end of the season (he's leaving in 2012 anyway for Selig's job so why wait a year for a change?), and most of all for Mr. Angelos to give up. It's going to be at least 5 years until the Orioles have a winning season given the state of their organization. And that's being optimistic I think. I'd have much more hope for the team if the one person who has been consistently with the team for the past 12 years was gone: Peter Angelos. There's no one else to blame, people. Unless you want to blame Ernie Tyler.

I'd have much more hope for the team if the one person who has been consistently with the team for the past 12 years was gone: Peter Angelos.

You forgot about Terry Crowley.

"You forgot about Terry Crowley." ~DCB

Good point, but I think by now discussing coaching and players as the cause of the longstanding failure is moot. Yes, the players play and the coaches help them be better players. But the problem with the Orioles is corporate. They are poorly run from the top down, and the top is ultimately responsible for what happens at the bottom. A company that is run with excellence creates an environment for success, and that is established by ownership.

I know people compare the Ravens and Orioles, but it is a valid comparison from a corporate perspective. Mr. Bisciotti appears to set a professional tone of excellence. Whenever I read a public expression from him, it is professional, positive, and full of confidence in his players and organization. Whenever I read a public expression from Mr. Angelos (which is very very rare), it sounds like disingenuous defensiveness from criticism (e.g. recent Ripken story in national media). The tones from each leader/owner are in STARK contrast. This is just one sign that tells me that the Baltimore Orioles are an inferior corporation, and that the cause for their inferiority is inferior leadership at the ownership level.

There is simply no other excuse. I can agree with some of the criticisms of Andy McPhail, just as I agreed with criticisms of Mike Flanagan, Jim Beatie, and Sid Thrift. The bottom line though is that Peter Angelos hired all of them. He holds the lion's share of blame for the failure of this corporation. I understand that he makes plenty of money in failing, and maybe that's enough for him. Who knows? But regardless, he has shown that he does not have what it takes to be an owner of a major league organization, save money. If he respected himself and the fans who love this team, he would sell it and enjoy the years that he has left in comfortable retirement. He's too old to think he needs to prove himself, and too old to need more money.

The saddest part of all, though, is that none of this makes any difference. I'm a nobody and my opinion counts for nothing. It's his team and he can do what he likes. I just wish that things were different.

I am finished until Angelos sells the team. Its been fun everyone!

Kenny, watch yourself, Pete gets awfully touchy when anyone begins to indirectly question his journalistic integrity. You have stated the obvious from a logical business perspectivei and in fact, Pete and Kevin Cowherd are the only two writers for "The Sun" who openly criticize the organization and the team. As to an earlier comment you made, I only post under my own name and you can confirm with with Pete if you like. I have exchanged private communications with him about the phantom posters to see if there is a way to stop it. He is exploring options.

Let's beat the dead horse a little, Kenny. Andy Macphail is in his fourth season and it is his job to put a Major League product on the field. The responsibility for this debacle rests soley with him and his one dimensional startegy. The Orioles have made progress with the farm system but at the pace
Macpahil is going, and the direction, there will be no epiphany for the team in the forseeable future. Macphail lacks vision and flexibility and frankly if this embarrasment contnues for another month or two, he should be terminated. He had his chance, gambled, and lost. As to who might replace him, sometimes in business a move is made and a virtual unknown is brought in to effect change. In this case it is not so much who to replace him with, but more to just replace him period before he does further damage.

Now, I think the fans do need to make a little more noise directly to the Orioles organization, rather than on the blogs. I have had many conversations with Greg Bader and I can tell you that he and Bill Stetka like to hear from the fans. They will return your calls. I have expressed myself to them several times and I have not gotten the boilerplate support for Andy Macphail that you get if you email the Orioles.

If you want some action and some movement on the part of the organization, call Greg Bader and Bill Stetka. Call Peter angelos office. Then get on here and tell us what they said. I am not talking to you directly kenny, because I know you are not afraid to pick up the phone and probably have.

Call the Orioles and tell them that you do not like what is going on..

This team is an embarrassment to the fans and State.

Fans should be down on MacPhail. He promised to buy the bats to become competitive. And what did he do, the same thing he does every year. Goes out and buys what is left over on the FA market and tries to sell it to the fans as "improvement" Atkins is giving the O's the same thing he did in Colorado last year....nothing! With a nice one-two punch in the middle of the lineup, we might have salvage a series this weekend.

Andy...THE PLAN IS FLAWED and YOU must be held accountable for your lack of action over the years!

In 12 previous seasons, all of them losing ones, the Baltimore Orioles have lost 1.7 million paying customers from their attendance, or 47 percent of the house. It may get worse. A 4-18 start, Baltimore's worst other than the 0-21 debacle of 1988, threatens to cut interest even further. The Orioles face a business model nightmare: irrelevant by the time school lets out and the peak drawing season begins.

Baltimore appeared to moving forward with young players such as Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Matt Wieters and Brian Matusz. But, according to one rival executive, their model was flawed. "They took good young players and surrounded them with non-tenders, veteran guys who can't play," the executive said. "It's a brutal combination."

The Orioles' investments, meager though they may be, in players such as Garett Atkins, Mike Gonzalez, Miguel Tejada, Julio Lugo and Cesar Izturis have not advanced the club. Look at their roster: they have few valuable commodities any other team would want. And Wieters, Jones and Markakis (five home runs combined) have exhibited little power.

The Orioles are last in the AL in offense, have scored three runs or less in 15 of their 22 games, and squeaked out three of their four wins by one run -- leaving them this close to another 1-21 start.

The Orioles need to gain some momentum rather quickly, but the schedule is working against them. They still have 13 games left in a 22-game stretch against the Mariners, Yankees, Red Sox and Twins -- and they are 2-7 nine games into it. They have lost all seven series to start the season.

History also is working against them. The 2010 Orioles are only the 12th team since 1900 to start 4-18 or worse. Here are the only five clubs to do so in the past 40 years -- and how badly they ended up.

Smart ppl were saying the same thing all winter long

So who is the best prospect for next year's draft. We have a lock on it.

Teams With 4-18 Starts Since 1970
Team First 22 Games Final Record
1988 Orioles 1-21 54-107
1992 Royals 3-19 72-90
1997 Cubs 4-18 68-94
2003 Tigers 3-19 43-119
2010 Orioles 4-18 ?-?

STARTED 4-18 OR WORSE

HEY ANDY HAS 2 OF THE 3 WORSE STARTS SINCE 1970!!!

Were Garrett Atkins' stats from earlier in his career just inflated because he played in Colorado? It seems very likely watching him this season. He doesn't even look like he can hit a home run right now with that awkward stance. The way Lackey is pitching, a good team would've scored at least 6 or 7 runs against him tonight.

Trembley gets exactly what he deserves tonite, Playing that stiff Atkins got him what?
A strikeout and a DP with the bases loaded and no outs. Hey Daye, Hughes is here because Atkins sucks. Did you forget?
Obviously. Somebody gotta go this week.

ATKINS IS THE WORST SIGNING OF THE DECADE!!
The one thing you don't want to do with bases loaded and no outs is hit a dribbler to THE PITCHER!!!!!

Sucked everything out of that inning for the team... I hope Hernandez keeps dealing...

I meant the last 10 years... I know the decade just started... it's been a long week!

No way the Red Sox don't find a way to win this game. Or just as likely, the O's find a way to lose it. Hernandez was done in the 5th but got a lucky break. He never seems to be effective for more than 5 innings probably because his control isn't very good.

It was only a short time ago that I posted that the Atkins signing would go down in history as one of the worst signings ever made by the team. I said it would rival the signing of Earl"big Money" Willaims. I was crucified on the blog for that prediction and you know who you are. How do you like it now?

Atkins road ops 2007-2009 = 650

All other numbers declined for 3 straight yrs

Only dopey Andy didnt know this apparently

Gil,

You're not the only one who hated the Atkins signing. Get a grip

still thinking about In-and-Out Burger…

How many times does Johnson have to come into a game in a big spot and fail before Trembley doesn't put him in that situation? I'm stunned that the game is now tied (soon to be a loss) after the O's offense failed to deliver in a big spot earlier in the game. The 1962 Mets won 40 games...can this Orioles team win 41 games?

Ok, maybe atkins should be removed from the roster so there is no temptation to play him anymore. This game is on his at bat.

How about putting Hernandez in the bullpen? Hmmm.

Berken-out. Out. Way Out. Walking the 9 man with 2 outs is inexcuseable.
This team puts up with too much crap from mediocre ballplayers with no more upside that guys they got throwing at AA.

Gil,

Yes, you and wayne beat the Atkins thing to death. And you were right. More right in fact, than anyone could have imagined?

Listen to how the Boston fans react when the Sox score. They have totally taken over Camden Yards. If you were a foreigner watching the game, not knowing where they were playing, you'd think Boston is the home team.

This can't be defended. The Orioles can no longer be defended. Andy Macphail's experiment has failed. It's time for another change. This team is just so sad....

Jones head is invisible. Thanks for taking the bat out of Nick's hand you dope.
This team is pretty much beyond belief.
If you didn't see it, there is no way in hell you'd believe it.

Walt = Wayne or Gil

Why, oh, why is Jim Johnson still on this team??

well, it looks like the doghouse ain't big enough to hold this crew of stiffs.
Johnson working his way toward the 5th inning. He's just horrible.

Drew is a professional hitter. Just sits there waiting for the big dope to make a mistake, cause they know he can't throw it in the same place three times in one at bat.
Voila- smashes the dopes fastball.

If I was DT, I'd quit.

Johnson was so good in 2008, I figured at least the O's have a very good set-up man for the next few years. Unfortunately, he appears to have been a one-year wonder that gets progressively worse. Kinda like this team. Can't wait for those charts to start where they match up the 2010 Orioles with the 1962 Mets game by game.

So here we go again. Meredith comes in, gets the only guy he faces and Simon starts the 9th! Why? Was the Simon-Pedroia matchup much better than the Meredith-Pedroia matchup. Overmanaging by a bad manager is a terrible combination.

atkins. 0-4, 2k, DP, fly ball
nice job tonite

If i'm a manager, i ain't going down with atkins name in the last lineup i make out.

As bad a signing as Atkins looks, Tejada is the polar opposite. Professional ballplayer.
Accepts challenges. Produces.
Shows up to play every single game.

Great win! Miggy was huge tonight. Hernandez is a solid starter, but needs more run support. Great to see Albert pitch well tonight.

Is it just me, or are the Redsox just mediocre without Manny Ramirez. They ran him out of town, but clearly miss his bat.

The lesson for the O's here: throw the kitchen sink at SD for Adrian Gonzales. One power hitter can make a huge difference.

I liked when Jones loafed out of the box with 1 out with a tie game. If he was hustling, he wouldve been on 3rd with 1 out, but no he's standing there watching when he shoulda been running.

WE won this game but THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT HUSTLING!!!

Gil likes me more than he likes Garrett Atkins.

The Orioles won, but it's an ugly win. Atkins shows that he is among the steroid washups (any batter who was good 2-3 years ago but now sucks was on steroids imo). Adam Jones' pause at the plate was unconscionable. When you are struggling for a win, you don't stand at the plate after hitting a ball, no matter how foul you think it is. The pitching was presentable, but we had to trot out too many. Luckily Beltre gave us a few runs.

This organization is pathetic. Fans should be outraged, even when they get a rare win.

Mr. Angelos, please sell the team!

When Koji comes back, time to move JJ to middle relief for a while. I think our boys, Dave and Andy ruined this kid by pushing him into the closer role last year and destroyed his confidence. He looks scared to death in tough spots. There is no excuse for a guy with a 95 mph fastball with great movement to be getting hit like this - I don't agree with all the naysayers that want to give up on him, but he needs to step back and start over.

By the way, some folks on this blog need to take a breath when a reliever gives up a couple of hits or a run (like Berken) - Just think how many runs the O's have gotten off the Red Sox bullpen in the last 4 games - basically almost every bullpen in baseball stinks right now.

So does anyone think Luke Scott or Atkins look like major league hitters. I realize Ortiz and Texeira are both hitting under .150, so maybe you the two O's are just off to the same slow start, but they just look so overmatched. Before everyone goes crazy, I'm not comparing them to those two proven great players - I'm just using them as examples of slow starts. The problem is Trembley still thinks its June 2009 and keeps batting Scott 5th, where he kills rally after rally. I'd say by the end of May, if they are no better, both need to go.

I don't think JJ is lost, or even that he isn't still close to the same he was a couple years ago. He is a set up man. He can bridge into the 9th by pitching a great 8th.
I know the HR came in the 8th but he didn't start there. Look at his stats even into last year when he came in to start the 8th and how well he did.
Now I agree that as a reliever on a Major League club he needs to be able to get outs in other situations, but Trembley has managed him so terribly.
Every time he comes in to close, I know he's going to blow it. He just doesn't have the temperment to come in and close a game. And right now he doesn't have it to come in a pressure situation (1st and 3rd in a one run game).
Maybe he needs to spend some time in Norfolk, but I think a few appearances where he comes in the 7th or 8th and starts the inning and gets out of it cleanly will get him back to that more dominant form.

Also, Jones needs to be batting 6th or lower for a while until he starts to wake up. He had a good game at the plate today, but his base running was horrid.

Kenny

Thanks for your response. I've enjoyed several of your posts. You're right of course to point out the commercial symbiosis between the Orioles and "The Sun." But to assume from that that "Sun" writers are therefore cowed into submission is a bit unfair, and probably unwarranted. On any decent paper there is a strict firewall between Editorial and Marketing--no pressure tolerated--and I very much assume that the same holds true for any of the Tribune group, including "The Sun." So, one must, I think, take Peter's views at face value--they are his own. Further, as Gil pointed out, Cowherd and Schmuck are the only writers on the paper who criticize the organization at all, although, compared to other cities, the taps on the wrist are of the mildest kind. Also, the dependency works the other way, too: if the Orioles don't advertize in "The Sun," there aren't too many other mass outlets around, at least in the Baltimore area. In short, it's in the interests of everybody for the team to get better, fast, and the incompetence with which that movement is being handled is enough to drive a grown man to drink.

Gil,

You're hard-headed and unsentimental and I appreciate that about your posts. The only way to solve problems is to see them clearly and analyze them rationally, and you and Kenny are forces toward the light.

I honestly think that open airing of management's blunders in the press is the only way to influence decision-making by PA and AM. They owe us nothing; it's their team. But, in the final analysis, they need us more than we need them, and as businessmen, they are aware of that, I'm sure. So, what we think, and how we act--as consumers--matters to them, which is why I wrote what I did.

A pleasure communicating with you both, even in this indirect way. Let's hope tonoght's win, ugly as it was, will lead to better things--although, given the team's many, many holes, not to mention the miserable oleadership from the dugout, I somehow doubt it. Ah well, tomorrow's another day....

just 4 back of the Royals now. we can't compete with the skanks and sux. $hit, we can't compete w/ KC, Texas or Oakland!

In and Out? 5 Guys? Oh Puleeze . . .
Whatta Burger in Texas tops them all

A Fan,

This season was lost between the last pitch of 2009 and the first pitch of 2010. Rather than upgrade the level of proven Major League talent, Macphail hoped to buy more time for his plan by keeping the fans placated with a sub par but slightly improved product. He never intended to win this year, however he never intended to lose this bad. By not striving for excellence Macphail has cheated the organization, the fans, and the city and should be fired as soon as the Orioles are 20 games out in May...which won't be much longer.

Call the Orioles and demand change at the GM postion now.

Hey Gil,

Man, it's been tough out there. Last nights crowd was so overwhelmingly pro Sox, that my friends and I were actually laughing. One friend in particular went along with the 'Let"s Go Red Sox' chant a few times. His reasoning?

'If the O's give you nothing, you might as well at least try to have fun'

Of course we were able to raz him pretty good when the O's one at the end. Hey, we enjoyed it while we could, knowing it'll be a rare occurrence.

All in all though Gil, this team is just so ridiculously bad. I mean how can baseball people pick up a guy like Atkins, pay him good money, then witness him perform the way we KNEW he would? The way his track record suggest? Wasn't it there for everyone to see?

I was never against the signing of Miggy. In fact, if we brought in a legitimate 1B, along with a top of the rotation pitcher, along with a closer, along with still another bat, bringing in Miggy was a fine move.

But when Miggy becomes the best player on your team..... Well then we have problem Houston.

I don't know if you've been to the games yet Gil, but it's bad. Aside from a few unconditional fans, people just don't care about the O's anymore. Not really. Instead, they show up for a night out, or to watch the other team. My friends and I? Well, we show up yes, because we're dumb enough to have sent in a check months ago. But we also go because we love baseball. Not Oriole baseball mind you.... just baseball.

The typical fan is tired of not just the losing, but the never ending talk about the 'kids'. You know..... The O's front office thinks the average fan is so stupid. They believe most fans buy into the 'kids' theme. But they don't Gil... Not anymore.

Fans see what happens when you rely on players like Bergesen and Reimold. They see through the hype on players like Bell and Snyder. And while it's nice to see Tillman throw a no hitter, and to see Arieta doing well in AAA, real fans know that pitchers are the biggest crap shoot of all.

Oh sure, it's great to have a player like Matusz doing pretty well. But other teams have good young players as well.... they just don't try to sell them as being the totl answer.

But why do fans like us know all this, while execs like AM obvious don't?

My answer to that question is simple actually..... Because AM is a fraud as a baseball exec.

He may be a great person.... and I hear he's a very nice man. But baseball wise, he's an absolute fraud.

And his record over the past 20 years, and especially while with the O's, proves it.

All that said, the weather is amazing, thus it should be an enjoyable evening to watch a baseball game.

Hi Wayne,

I went to opening day as a guest of another company and have not been back since. I only bought a 15 game plan this year{it will be my last} and have been giving the tickets away. I don't intend to attend another Orioles game and waste any more money on this disgrace for a professional baseball team again. I'm done. I'll check in on MASN. I bought two front row season tickets to the York revolution and I am enjoying the competition. It may not be major league baseball, but it baseball just the same. Brooks Robinson is a part of the ownership group and he helped the Mayor of York throw out the first ball on opening day. Brooks had some touching things to say about the game of baseball from Little League on up at the ceremony and it's too bad it wasn't covered by the Baltimore media.

I am going to Clipper stadium tonight in Lancaster tonight to watch Matt Riley make his first start for York against the Lancaster Barnstormers. I hope Riley's arm holds up, he has thrown well in his two brief relief stints so far and has hit 95 on the radar gun.

Call the Orioles and demand change at the GM position now.

All the AMN haters - I don't understand - do you think PA gave him free reign to sign whomever he wants and just passed on them - Like last year PA said, sure spend up to $200 million to get Tex, but AM just decided he didn't really want him?

I agree Gonzalez was a poor choice among the available relievers, and Atkins was a crap shoot, but exactly which front line FA did he pass on the last two years? Personally I would have committed to Hughes at 1B and signed either Matsui or Vlad to DH, so we could be rid of Scott, but neither of those guys make a long term difference.

Meanwhile, under AM the O's are rebuilding their minor leagues and producing some quality young pitchers. He has made some decent trades and will likely make a couple of more this year.

I know you guys blast this argument, but with the pitchers maturing the true test for PA will be the next two FA classes, where there will be some real difference makers.

It is so easy to rip the guy every day, but I never see you guys offer up an alternative plan or suggest specific players he could have added.

Maybe we can go back to this winter and the David Hernandez and Michael Aubrey for A Gon suggestions......

Just a suggestion - sit back and try to watch a game. No excuse for 5-17, but if Gonzalez doesn't blow the first few saves and they start 3-1 and if B Rob isn't hurt they could be close to .500 right now. I see real improvement over the last 10 days, 3-4 in the first 7 against the Sox and Yanks and in another week when they get out of the AL East maybe they can win a series or two and chip away at this poor start against some of the weaker teams in the league. Remember they are 1-5 against the Rays and last time I checked they were smoking just about everyone.

I know I'll get attacked as warehouser, kool aid drinker, etc... and I've tried to stay off this blog, because you guys ruin for everyone that just wants to try to enjoy baseball season.

Hey Rocky, where have you been? Not Brooks, blancione, Wayne and I recommended possible signings, trades and moves all winter. We talk baseball here, Rocky, and apparently you can't handle the truth. It's ridiculous to even suggest that Macphail should get another two years. Why not another two years after that?

Call the Orioles now and demand change at the GM position.

Gil,
You and your ilk's version of talking baseball is whining about AM. That's it. Oh, and saying Atkins will be bad. WOW. Way to go out on a limb.

I'm going on record and predicting the sun will rise tomorrow.

I'll be back to tell you I told you so.

Call the Orioles and demand a change in the GM position now.

Gil, Sorry I meant suggest something that you could actually make happen if you were the GM. There were just all stars hanging around waitnig for Andy to call right? I need to go back to ignoring you guys because because if you think this gets turned around in the time AM has had so far you are ridiculous. Sit back, have a beer and actually try to enjoy watching a baseball game for a change.

Pete sucked me in with the talk of fast food.

Then everything else is still all the same. Quite unfortunate.

I'll just ask the same questions I asked this winter since everyone else is repeating themselves.

Who do you sign at first base? Jim Thome? Rhyne Hughes has one less HR and a higher BA by 60 points. He's been up what, a week?

Who do you sign for LF? Matt Holliday is playing well, but $20MM better than anyone else? No. Slight upgrade and that's with the revolving door of injuries. Jason Bay? Please. .267 and 1HR. Such a shame we didn't jump on that for $9MM this year.

Who do we sign for starting pitching? John Lackey for $10MM? His 4.50 ERA is worth every penny there. Only winning games where the Sox put up 6 or more runs. Ben Sheets? $10MM and he's 1-2 with an ERA of 5.00.

So yes, everyone's right. Spending less money on just about equivilant players has been a disaster. If McPhail listened to you all, we could have $40MM tied up in Ben Sheets, John Lackey, Jason Bay and Jim Thome with the exact same record....at best.

Awesome.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills.
