Schmuck heads west
Apparently, I've grown bored with the Orioles' winning streak, because I'm at the airport getting ready to board a flight to Los Angeles this morning. Everybody deserves a little time off once in awhile, and it has been awhile.
I'll be attending a college reunion at my beloved Cal State Fullerton and visiting family. I'll also be bringing my golf clubs along, just for show. The highlight on my drive from the LA airport to Fresno will be a stop at In-and-Out Burger. Hopefully just one, but you never know.
See you on the left coast.

Ah, In-and-Out Burger. A California tradition. At what age is it acceptable to be intimidated by the sketchy skater kids always loitering in any In-and-Out Burger parking lot? I have to admit I felt a little nervous last time I went and that made me feel like an old geezer.
Also: Why is 90% of the In-and-Out Burger menu a secret and not listed? Again, I felt like an out-of-touch geezer.
Also: Although In-and-Out is delicious, Five Guys is still better. But they're expanding faster than Matt Albers's ERA, which could dilute the product.

Pete, did you feel at the end, despite the little fielding gaffe, that when we beat the Yanks last night that it was the first complete victory for the Oriole's this season? I mean there were other spots that could've been better in terms of hitting, but I know that listening to the radio last night, that game was about as smooth as it could be. I really like Simon's poise too. We need somebody like that to step up and grab the closers role. Have a great trip out west.

Pete, you deserve some time away from this train wreck that you have been forced to cover since pitchers and catchers reported. In a season that was supposed to be about"wins and losses" the Orioles came out of the gate to assure that they would never even smell the .500 mark in 2010. I predict that if you return{ I hope you find something better because you are a class act} Trembley will still be here, Adam Jones will still be flailing at bad breaking balls in the dirt, and Miguel tejada will still be kicking routine ground balls in Izturis direction. You won't miss a beat. Have a good trip.

Ahh, Pete. I'll be checking out the new In & Out Burger in Lehi, Utah on my way back to Baltimore next month. As much as I don't want to put money in PGA's pocket, I will be trying to catch a game or two while there because I also need a fix at Boog's!

Did anyone else catch the link to the NY Post on the Insider blog?

I suggest that everyone takes a look at the post after a Yankee loss. It's kind of fun to watch the NY media and fans cry themselves to sleep about it. Especially when they lose to the "putrid Orioles".
Here's hoping for a sweep, just so the Yanks and their fans have to walk home with their tails between their legs.

Steven Strasburg update....Took a ride up to Reading Tuesday because I wanted to get a look at the Nationals prize first round pick. I wanted to see him pitch the first time on City Island in Harrisburg for the AA Senators but it was standing room only that night and I waited too long to try to get a ticket.
The AA Reading Phillies hitters were clearly overmatched by Strasburg. He pitched 5 innings, gave up no hits, struck out six and the only hitter to reach did so on a dropped third strike. He was hitting 97 and 98 on the radar gun and I haven't seen anyone throw that hard consistently in a long time. I'm sure he will be in AAA soon, then on to the nationals by late summer.
Posted by: Gil | April 28, 2010 1:43 PM
How are you going to bring the Strasburg post around to the O's sucking or how AM is a failure? That's all you ever post, so we're waiting.

Posted by: MacFailers hate success | April 28, 2010 2:33 PM
I wonder who MacFail will waste the #1 overall pick on in next yr's draft.
It wont be a player as good as Strasburg.
It will be some cheap pick that saves a few bucks ala Matt (ponson) Hobgood
Posted by: Cheap during the draft too | April 28, 2010 2:36 PM
Just curious...did anyone else notice Montanez's jersey error yesterday?
The accent on the back was over the "e", not the "n".
Posted by: Christopher | April 28, 2010 2:56 PM
And here I was hoping that Montanez' jersey had a completely different name on it.
What's he good at again?
Posted by: jim66 | April 28, 2010 3:22 PM
Was Hobgood a cheap draft pick? I am only asking because I have no idea. I know sometimes things are thrown out there and assumed as fact. I was under the impression Hobgood was a good pick.
Also, wasn't Wieters passed over by other clubs because of his "signability", yet the "cheap" management picked him and signed him anyway... weird....
As far as Strasburg goes... that kid is going to be another Lincecum, sick stuff... Glad they are both in the NL... along with Halladay...
Let's see what we can get done tonight against CC. I hope Guts brings his best tonight, we are going to need him to go 6 or 7...
Hope Simon can keep bringing the heat... that would solve a lot of problems with this team... 7th inning Castillo, 8th inning JJ, 9th inning Simon... It is starting to look like a real Major League Bullpen, even though it is only been 1 game so far... we'll see if it holds up... Add Koji to that and get rid of Albers, we could be ok... keep your fingers crossed!
Go Putrid O's!!! Let's give em another embarrassing headline for the back page of the Daily News tomorrow!
Posted by: Tony P in AZ | April 28, 2010 3:30 PM
Why didn't MacFail draft Strasburgh last year? Huh? Huh? You Kool-ade drinkers got no answer for that, do you?
No, he picked hobb-globin Hob-goods instead to save a few $$ bucks. If it were about getting the best talent, then why go with sign-ability pick like Hob-goods instead of Strasburgh? Same thing we saw in previous yrs with Holson and Parks!!!!
Posted by: Draft during the cheap too | April 28, 2010 3:37 PM
Hey Draft,
I imagine you as a blissful soul. Before posting any more garbage, go check out the draft order. The O's picked 5th. He was drafted first.
And no, it's not like the NFL where you can trade up. To short-circuit another unnecesary stupid reply.
Some additional info: almost half of the first 20 picks were high school kids, so no, the O's weren't alone there.

Tony
Hobgood was rated in the 20's or 30's on most boards. He was chosen with the Orioles 5th pick.. BTW, in moneyball, it is argued that you absolutely cannot mess up when you pick in the top 5.
There were several higher rated and more polished pitchers taken after him. Off the top of my head, I know that SS Grant Green was paid more as was Tyler Matzek who were both taken after Hobgood and considered better talents and closer to the bigs
According to the slot system, the Os shouldve spent the 5th most on the draft. However, during the 1st 10 rds, the Os were 15 th in spending on the draft. In fairness, they wound up finishing 7 th overall which is slightly below what they shouldve spent according to the slot system.\
In contrast, the Pirates spent more on the draft than any team in MLB
Draft during the cheap(shamrock),
Strasburg was off the board so its not a good comp, but the Os will have the #1 pick next yr and you can bet ol andy will go CHEAP over talent
Posted by: Cant spend with the Pirates | April 28, 2010 4:10 PM
Just read the New York article, they show that Weiters threw 2 out, Lugo out hustled the ball thru the middle. But The O's didn't win, the Yanks lost. Ahhhhhhhh!

Since any sane and objective person can see that andy went for price b4 talent with hobgood , will u be ok if he does it again this yr with the 3rd overall pick and again next yr when we have another top 3 pick ? the orioles sure draft high with andy in charge
Andy:
Wont sign elite free agents
Wont draft elite talent
Wont sign any elite Intl Players
What a plan!
If other teams are cheap, that makes it ok for andy to be cheap too ?? thats good strategy. With that thinking, Im sure we will be playing in the postseason in no time
Why do ppl who call themselves fans defend CHEAPNESS ??

Hey Pete,
I haven't commented in a while because I was in Army basic training for a couple months. I'm finally done and catching up on a lot of O's action. It might not seem like it to you all, but a lot of things have evolved since January. Not in a completely good way, but it truly seems that there will be some end to this string of bad luck. I'm not saying the O's will even make it to .500, but at this point, I'd call it a success for them to win half the games they have left.
Anyway, I'm out in Monterey, CA now at an Army Language School. Last week I went to In-and-Out Burger for the first time. I was told to order it "animal style" and it did not disappoint! Great food, too bad I had a PT test the next morning at 5am. Craziness.
Well, enjoy your vacation and keep bringing us the news on them O's! Thanks Pete.

Christian,
Thank you for your service to our country. Good luck wherever your orders take you....
As for the O's, we can't be accepting of such failure. Obviously, it's not important in the overall scheme of things, especially when guys like you have more important things to be concerned about. But for the fans of Baltimore, accepting such a pathetic product should no longer be tolerated.
If they did indeed win half of their remaining games, as you suggest, they again will easily be one of the worst teams in all of baseball. They will once again be the laughing stock of the sports world. Right there with the Pirates, Clippers, Lions, etc....
Let's demand better.
Good luck to you sir.....

JoeBlow,
i'll be fine with it. as a matter of fact, i hope he drafts so badly that this year he drafts someone not even on anyone's board. Like, maybe a catcher from Brown University. A left fielder from Cheshire High School. i'll be fine that angelos owns the team. i'll be fine that he's making tons of money.i'll be fine that you continue to be aggravated by things you know very little about and and over which you have no control. I'll be overjoyed to read your constant griping and complaining. Hey, to your point, it might go on for many more years.
Can't wait!!!
Posted by: jim66 | April 28, 2010 7:44 PM
Well,
Not at the game tonight. I love baseball, but man it's tough sitting in the cold with opposing fans dominating the chatter. Even with a win.... and wins are always better than L's, it's a little tough to deal with having your home park taken over.
Tonight, the Yankee's are....well, the Yankee's. There's no question in my mind that they were flat last night. Just the day before, they were at the white house with their championship trophy on display. It must be tough to get up to play the worst team in baseball the next game you play.
Tonight, they're back and showing who they are. Tonight, they look like the best again, and the O's look like....the O's.
Oh, I'll be back out there tomorrow. I hate the Yankee's, but how can you not like how they play the game? How can you no like watching many of the best players in the game?
Those fans though.... they are tough to deal with.
And by the way..... Yes, my friends and I displayed our bags for one inning. We didn't want to go any further, thus giving Yank fans too much satisfaction. But the Bags were VERY well received by O's fans. Very well received.
Trust me folks, the 'it wasn't about this year' posters on this Blog are VERY much in the minority.
More about the Bags and the real fans down the road a bit......
Was that a 'Let's go Yankee's' cheer i heard on TV again just now?
Yeah, I guess it was.......

When is someone on an O's broadcast going to point out that O's pitchers give up 2 or 3 hits per game on balls in the hole at 2nd that 9 out of 10 second basemen get to with ease and Wiggy doesn't get within 5 feet. I know he's giving all he has, but I'm not sure it matters how well he hits to jusfify his defense.

jim66,
Perfect timing - Tillman was dominant in his last outing - made one bad pitch for a homerun, otherwise was unhittable - of course that's nothing compared to what's happening in Norfolk right now. I love when the geniuses on this site prove how much they know about baseball.

Posted by: jeff | April 28, 2010 9:42 PM
Wayne,
A little defensive? I don't think anyone was commenting on the problems with O's but about a post that a 22-year old pitcher is "a bust" after 2 bad AAA starts. There's plenty to be critical of without nonsense like that.
Posted by: Jeff | April 28, 2010 9:50 PM
i think the post was simply in response to the rant against Tillman you seem to have inspired. I thought it was funny. Whatever. He pitched a no-hitter tonite.
Posted by: jim66 | April 28, 2010 9:51 PM
jim66,
I don't see the earlier rant - didn't realize you were joking - I was responding to Todd's post - anyway too much Sabathia tonight
Posted by: Jeff | April 28, 2010 10:06 PM
guthrie decided he was going to try and pitch to the middle of the plate and restrict movement on his pitches, and go with that. That curve he threw to Cano was vintage 2009.
But the game starts with a bouncing ball by Atkins that goes for a double. Then my fav Montanez in left botches Johnson's ball and it's all downhill.
Wieters got schooled tonite, but hey, not so unpredictable with CC throwing. Sabbathia can actually command a few pitches and it usually ends up where he intended.(intended understatement).
Nobody got hurt tonite, did they?
Nobody went crazy because the O's lost? No bridge jumping? Nobody stepped in front of the No 9? Good.
Posted by: jim66 | April 28, 2010 10:21 PM
Did anyone really expect a win tonight against CC?
Kills me that Hendrickson only gets credit for one run tonight and one inning pitched.
Relieved Guthrie win a man on and two out and promptly gives up two base hits to allow the run, and then of course gets the out. No runs to his name.
Then in the 6th, gives up three more hits and his lone run, leaves with two gone and Meredith gets the out with runners on to end the inning.
Really not a fan of the E.R.A. rules as it applies particularly to relief pitchers. Inherited runners need to account for something, even more so when the guy just needs one out.
Hendrickson certainly has been pretty good thus far, but 5 hits in one inning pitched with just one run credited to him is ugly.

The O's losing this game was basically a lock, let's all be realistic. Sabathia beats them all the time and Guthrie was due to struggle a little. I'm hoping they can score a few runs off Burnett tomorrow and give Matusz some support because I'm pretty sure he'll pitch well enough to win tomorrow.
Posted by: Jon in Chicago | April 28, 2010 10:32 PM
Jeremy definitely reverted to '09 form tonight. He came out keyed up - was overthrowing - falling to first base and missing up in the zone. That slider to Cano was BP quality, If see Jeremy hitting 95 mph like he was in the first two innings you can assume he has no location and less movement. In '08 and so far this year he was an effective 92 mph down in the zone. Hopefully this week and not the last 3 starts is the aberration. If he is pitching well come July he could bring some decent prospects....

Jon in Chicago:
CC is now 10-1 lifetime vs. the O's in 15 lifetime starts and 6-1 at OPACY.
Let's go Matusz! Nothing would be sweeter than shutting up the Yankees bottom-feeder fans at OPACY even for a few hours.

Jeff:
I think Cano could hit Halladay throwing marbles his way right now. He has 14 hits in his last SEVEN games. That's more hits than Luke Scott (13), Nolan Reimold (10) and Garrett Atkins (13) had going into tonight's game.
Posted by: Kenny from Pikesville | April 28, 2010 10:44 PM
Wow,
Tilman shuts up the whiners for a day or two, and that article about the trade not being so good and "Tilmans a bust" jokers
Adam Jones will not end up being the best part of that trade

Will the REAL Jeremy Guthrie please stand up! Now it's time to bring up the Andy Macphail over hyped pitching prospect of the week? Who will it be? Who will be the next Orioles AAA pitcher to get shelled back to the minors, brought back, then shelled back again?
It's gotten so bad that even the Yankee fans aren't even showing up at the Yard to watch the beat downs anymore. And the FO was counting on loyal Red Sox/Yankee fans to pump up the attendance this year. Uh Oh. Holy empty seats, Batman!

Far fewer Yank fans, yet they still overwhelmed the O's fans last night.

Wayne, it's funny that all they have left is to invoke the name of Brian Matusz, who we both said was the real deal all along. As far as Macphail is concerned, even a blind squirrel stumbles over a nut on occasion.
I think it's hilarious to watch Adam Jones temper tantrums at the plate now that major league pitchers won't routinely throw him belt high fastballs down the middle anymore. It's just not fair, is it Mr.{chuckle}Gold Glove? I think we need a new bobblehead of Jones flailing at a bad breaking ball out of the strike zone while blowing a bubble. We can call it "Fleer strikes out."

Here's how much the idiots on this site know about baseball.....

For some of you... how about suggesting MASN just show the games from Norfolk? I mean you know so much about the game, right?
You can pull out your Oriole jam jams, and sing 'can't wait til 2013'.

Mr. Why make it personal toward me.
Phony hypocrite. At least you posted your personal attacks under wayne for once instead of Anonymous.
And by the way..... Yes, my friends and I displayed our bags for one inning. We didn't want to go any further, thus giving Yank fans too much satisfaction. But the Bags were VERY well received by O's fans. Very well received.

Excuses. If you had balls and cared about your pseudocause you wouldn't give a damn about the Yankees(note: Yankees, not Yankee's) fans getting satisfaction.
Haven't you said over and over the O's are a laughing stock? That the Yankees are so much better blah blah...do you think you're going to give them satisfaction? I think the standings do that. They don't care about you wearing a bag for 15 minutes. To think such just shows how delusional you are.
Wait for those marbles to drop before talking about doing this or doing that. You either don't do it (99%, FanFest et al) or half-ass it when you actually follow through (1%, bags).
Go pay for the 2011 season tickets, Angelos enabler. Keep encouraging Pete to call out the O's while going to the games, hypocrite.
I don't give a damn what weak excuse you throw out there. For as much hate as you spew out there about the front office and about how the O's are so terrible, no excuse justifies it.
Cry to Pete and Gil about it getting personal. It only gets personal when you do. Check yourself and you can post all the boilerplate drivel you usually do. Keep it up and expect the same in return.

Enjoy you vacation Pete. I love in and out too, but also carls jr. makes a pretty tasty burger and also fat burger makes a good one.

Well, at least the O's lost this game early. Fans didn't have to tear their hair out watching the O's bullpen (nearly) lose the game.

smitty and your gang of alias's,
Why so obsessed my friend?
I go to games while you write post on blogs. I wear a bag while you watch masn. I tell it like it is while you haven't been accurate with anything about the O's to date.
Oh, and as for anonymous tags, that's you my friend. everyone knows you're the mean anonymous (hypocrite hunter, etc).
Me, I'm never ashamed (as you are) to just go by god ole wayne. Even when you use my name, it's cool.... just good ole wayne.
Oh, and in case you've forgotten....

Adam Jones is playing very poorly, which is agreed by many posters: The thing I cannot understand is why he won't listen to anybody and play back a few steps in the field. The example of this is when Nick Swisher hits the ball into left/center field and Jones misses it by about three feet. It cost the team two runs at that very moment (verdict would be out whether or not they give up any runs, it was 1st and 2nd no outs, and then Swisher hits a triple). To me if he catches the ball it saves two runs.
PLAY BACK A FEW STEPS AND CATCH THE BALL ADAM JONES!!!

Jones looks totally lost out there. He had a hit the night before but it doesnt make up for his bad play and im sorry that bunt he laid down sucked he made A-Rod get a web gem.
Send his punk ass to AAA for a few weeks.
Oh wait who esle do we have any better to play center??

Wayne: I wear a bag while you watch masn
Just so I get this right...you pay good money to go watch a team that is owned by a guy you despise, GM'd by someone you've called a disgrace, play a losing brand of baseball that you alternatively laugh/rant about, wear a bag on your head during the game, then callout others who post on the blog as the idiots, then complain yourself about the namecalling.
Does that about sum it up? Or am I missing something?

Andy Macphail is Doctor Parnassus

Dan F.,
Corey Patterson is now with Norfolk. Maybe the O's could swap Patterson with Jones!

Macphail would never allow that. He tells Trembley what to do.
