Orioles: The Bergesen quandary
Don't get me wrong. I want Brad Bergesen back in the major league rotation as soon as possible, but I want the 2009 Brad Bergesen who drove hitters crazy with his great command and beguiling pitch selection, not the guy whose confidence took a beating in his first three starts of 2010.
That's why I wonder if it's too soon to bring him back to face the Red Sox on Saturday, even after a solid start for Triple-A Norfolk that seemed to show that he had corrected some issues with his mechanics.
You saw his face as he walked off the mound after his last start. He was clearly confused and devastated. I don't know if you get your confidence back with one minor league performance, and I don't know if you're going to get it back facing a team like the Red Sox in your first game back.
If I was making the decision, I think I'd throw somebody else out there for a spot start and let Bergesen wrap one more minor league lineup around his finger before bringing him back.
Of course, that's problematic because the Orioles are not going to bring Jake Arrieta up for one start and send him back, so they would have to go to a lesser option. That's why it looks like they'll rush back Bergesen.

IMO they should give him at least 3 starts at AAA before considering a move.
If our run to the World Series suffers, so be it.
Oh wait...
Let the kid get right in the minors. Don't bring up Arrieta, Tillman, Patton or whomever until they've proven that they're ready.
Bringing kids up before they're ready because of a need is one of the main problems this organization has had with development.

Peter,
I agree with you on bringing Brad back up.....too soon. I believe he will benefit from 2 or 3 more positive outings and council from Mike Griffin. If Arietta is lights out in Norfolk, why not bring him up...let him get his feet wet in the bullpen. The Rays did it with David Price....can he be any worse than Albers?
Posted by: birdsteelers | April 27, 2010 11:24 AM
I three-gree. Bergy did not go to AAA for a physical re-hab but for a mental and emotional rehab. And one start is not enough to confirm that he is head is back in the game.
Leave in Norfolf for another week. Two more quality outings and you have a better case that he has straightened things out.
Make sure he can repeat his delivery, that the ball is coming out of his hand real good, that he is pounding the strike zone, that he insert anodyne pitching cliche before bringing him back to the majors.
Posted by: teej | April 27, 2010 11:39 AM
Not much else can be said here.
Bergesen is one of the few Norfolk pitchers that has a future in the bigs, so why risk another blow to his confidence when Seattle and Cleveland are coming up after Boston, New York and Minnesota?
If we were close to .500, this would be a different story, but this season is already over, so why take the risk? Why not just give the next two starts that would have been Bergesen's to Berken and/or Hendrickson? If we win, we win, if we lose, we lose. It's not like we have much of a chance to win a game over the next two weeks anyways.

I agree - I said yesterday that I'd like to see Bergesen stay in Norfolk a bit longer and have Simon start a game or two. Simon's impressed the club at various times, he's thrown well in Norfolk - why relegate him to the pen when he's more suited to start? Why was he not considered for a spot start?
Posted by: PeteyPablo | April 27, 2010 12:26 PM
I'd give him a full month in Norfolk before I'd make a decision. In the meantime, call up Simon or put Berken/Hendrickson in the rotation. It's not like we need him right here and now. There are alternatives, so use them until he gets right. Or if not, hopefully Arrieta continues to shine down there
Posted by: dave in glen burnie | April 27, 2010 12:47 PM
Patton is getting shelled at Norfolk, Arietta needs much more seasoning to even think about bringing him up. That leaves Bergesen the number one victim in the Andy Macpahil over hyped pitching prospect sweepstakes. Bergesen had some success last year but the hitters have made adjustments to his nibbling and just off the plate sinkers and offspeed mix. This is less about his confidence and more about his ability to now adjust to what the hitters are doing. That's why he is still nothing more than a prospect. Here we are in Macphail's fourth season and little has changed with the Baltimore Orioles. Pitching prosepects rushed to the big leagues, washed up veterans counted on to carry the team, a bullpen full of Don Stanhouse types, and over hyped postition players such as Adam jones flailing away at bad breaking balls in the dirt.
That's what happens when our GM came into the season planning to lose again for the sake of his "plan."
For all intents and purposes the season will be over on May 5, the Orioles will be 17 games out and falling fast, and the happy talkers will be buzzing about 2011.

Posted by: Pasadena Nick | April 27, 2010 1:07 PM
What’s wrong with the Macphail loss plan? Angleos spends even less on FA’s and managers. Also the Orioles FO doesn’t need to worry about pesky things like accountability for the bad product because they can blame it on the cheap manager they have. Seems like a slam dunk for Andy and Pete!

There's a big difference between MLB and AAA hitters. Hitters in the bigs are more patient and they probably have access to tapes and the'book'of Bergy. So instead of chasing borderline pitches, they lay off and wait for a 'fat' one.
It's all about adjusting and I say why not give him a few more AAA starts? Then call him up and have him pitch in middle relief for awhile-it's not like he won't get some work!
Unlike others, I'm not ready to write this guy off yet. He's had some success before and I can see him bouncing back.
If we are going to sever ties, why not start with Albers who has clearing shown that he has no command and to add insult to the situation, he can't even show up to spring training anyway close to game shape.
Posted by: TerryP | April 27, 2010 1:21 PM
The question becomes then.....
What happens if Bergesen gets rocked by the Red Sox on Saturday? Then you keep him in the rotation anyway? Then you send him back to Norfolk again? I wish Bergesen well, but I don't see how one outing against Charlotte can flip the switch and reverse his first three starts with the O's (10 1/3 IP, 21 H, 6 BB, 4 HR, 12.19 ERA)

Pasadena Nick, Arietta is having early success at AAA and in a functional organization he would pitch at least half a season there before the FO considered a promotion to the big leagues. Arietta is not Brian Matusz, few are. After Arietta was promoted to Norfolk last year from Bowie he went 5 and 8 and gave up 97 hits in 91 innings to an ERA of 3.93. He may eventually be a successful pitcher in the major leagues but right now he is progressing as pitching prospects should. It would be a mistake to bring him up now, he would get shelled back to Norfolk like Tillman and Bergeson. Let him master the AAA level first.

Nick -
There's this other guy that pitched for the Orioles named Jim Palmer. After his 24-year-old season, Palmer had already thrown over 800 big league innings. He had 59 wins, 36 complete games and 12 shutouts to go along with a nice 2.94 ERA.
Oh, and then there's this other guy named Mike Mussina. By the end of his 24-year-old season, he was close to 500 innings, and had 36 wins, 13 complete games and six shutouts. His 3.25 ERA wasn't too shabby either.
That Dave McNally guy wasn't bad either. 800+ innings, 48 wins, 22 complete games, eight shutouts and a 3.57 ERA by the end of his 24-year-old season.
The reason I'm talking about 24-year-olds? Arrieta turns 24 in May and he hasn't tossed a single pitch in the majors. He's got a lot of catching up to do, I think.
In short, I hope you were joking.

right on peter one start for brad bergesen at norfolk is not enough. he needs to a few more to make sure he is back on the right track. dt might as well pput jayson berken in that starting spot this weekend. the only thing that can happen is that he gets his but rocked. isn't that why he orioles brought these young pitchers up, to find out what they can and can't do. dt shouldn't act like a wet hen when they start getting inot trouble. he needs to let them try and work themselves out of truble. taking a young pitcher out will hut more thank help. i kinda wish that they would get away with pitch counting, although a lot of that started back when paul richards was managing. i don't think many remember paul richards.

Statement: We need to buy bats.
W Response: This year is not about wins and losses. Just enjoy the young prospects.
Statement: Trembley is not a big league manager. He cannot manage
W Response: We've got a great group of young players who will benefit from his teachings. Just be patient
Fast forward to this year:
Statement: Macphail plan sucks
W Response: We need to buy bats
Statement: Trembley is not a big league manager. He cannot manage
W Response: It's not the manager or Andy. It's the players.

Maybe they should start Berken Saturday.
Oh wait.... what's that? You say Berken gave up 45 baserunners to the Red Sox in less than 15 IP in 2009? Nevermind, then.
Bergesen is clearly the best option.

Greg -
Honestly, what's the difference between 3-21 and 4-20?
Obviously, we'd all love to see Bergesen succeed at the big league level, but that just wasn't happening this year. And if you really think that he's got everything figured out after one minor league start, I don't know what to tell you.
What's happening here is that Andy has backed himself into a corner. He thought he could get by this season with two mediocre veterans and three rookies in the starting rotation, but the wheels are starting to fall off quickly. Bergesen's already experienced a major setback and the wheels are about the fall off of the "David Hernandez: Fifth Starter" project. Things are probably about to normalize with Millwood and Guthrie as well, as Millwood's walk rate is unsustainable (for him) and Guthrie has defied all logic with a HR/9 rate that's well below his career mark.
And guess what? If Hernandez falls apart and Millwood and Guthrie start struggling, we're left with no reinforcements. Sure, Arrieta's looking good in AAA, but look at what happened to him last year. He dominated at Bowie but couldn't sustain that performance when he moved up to Norfolk. And the gap between AAA and MLB is insanely bigger than the gap between AA and AAA. So, it makes the most sense to leave Arrieta at AAA for most of the year, and maybe call him up in September. But, unfortunately, he's probably going to get called up in June or July, get torched just like Tillman did last year, and have to go back down.
And speaking of Tillman, he's got a 6.11 ERA in four starts and he's only lasted about 4 innings per start. And what about Troy Patton? He's got an 8.00 ERA in four starts. And Brandon Erbe? A 7.98 mark in three starts. Sure, things could change in a hurry for those three, but for now, the cupboard is bare. There's no margin for error. It's Millwood, Guthrie, Matusz, Bergesen and Hernandez and that's it.
And hey, up until this point, four of those five have been pitching pretty well and we've only won three games. Sorry to ruin your day, but imagine how bad things could get if one or two more start struggling...
Posted by: not brooks | April 27, 2010 2:36 PM
Bergy had a chance to claim his spot in the rotation and he did not do it. Give the next guy and shot to claim it. I would bring Arrieta up give him a chance to claim the spot. Pitch Bergy out of the pen along with Simon. Outright Albers and send Mickolio down for more seasoning.
We are one stiff shoulder, broken finger nail, tv commercial accident or food poisoning away from needing another sub. They will all get more chances to make more starts before all is said and done. Who are your best five? That is the only question.
Millwood, Guthrie and Matusz are the top 3. Bergy, Hernandez, Tillman, Simon, and Arrieta are fighting for 4 and 5.

Pete - I don't think the lesser option is an option; maybe if the Orioles were flirting with the .500 mark and could afford to throw someone out on the mound with a less than likely chance of winning, but not at a time when they desperately need wins whereever they can find them.
I'd love to see Arrieta called up, but can't see that happening, either, given the oft-stated position of MacPhail not to rush pitchers to the majors if it isn't necessary.
Although Bergy may not have his condidence fully back by Saturday, he did get a big boost the way his sinker was working, so I don't see him having a meltdown.
Still, this is so much like the O's season, where nothing comes easy. Take the last game at Boston, where they finally get that much needed win. Far from a laugher, this one was in doubt down to the liner that fortunately was hit right at Wiggy.
Let's hope that that, along with the awakened bat, is a sign of thing of good things to come. If the Orioles can win two out of three against both the Yankees and Red Sox this homestand, then they still may be able to turn this season around.
I'm cautiously optimistic on that point. Let's go O's!
Posted by: Ken Francis | April 27, 2010 3:30 PM
Fat slob Albers should have been waived to make room for BPP simon!
Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2010 3:41 PM
Pete,
I can not believe this is even a discussion point for O's management. I'm glad Brad bounced back on Sunday - 14 ground ball outs and 5 of their 7 hits were ground balls. But he still gave up 7 hits and a HR. There is no doubt he should get at least two more starts down there to 1) see if things are really fixed and 2) rebuild his confidence. The worst possible thing that could happen is for him to come up here and get shelled again. if that happens 10 great AAA starts won't help and his year could be a wash out. Also, the Sox are hardly the team you want to test a guy searching who is searchnig for his command - they don't chase bad pitches and they'll drive up his pitch count. I don't care if they started Albers or Julio Lugo for that matter - what is one more loss if you are supposed to be focused on the big picture. This is just crazy.
Lastly - no way you bring up Arrietta - after a rough intro to AAA and an ugly spring he has had 3 nice outings - about 15 more and you might have something to think about.

Posted by: Baltimore Heat | April 27, 2010 4:05 PM
I'd like to see Bergesen get another minor league start or two, let Simon start that game.
I hope Miggy is right about the Yankees being a good team for the O's to get back on track with. I still believe that this team has much more talent than they have displayed on the field so far, and I expect them to finally start winning a few games. They showed some heart coming back to win their last game against the Sox despite Trembley's effort to give it away, and now they are rested and at home.
Of course "home" when the Yankees and Sox are in town doesn't mean what it once did, but you take what you can get. They all know that DT's job is in the balance, and they seem to like him, and they all know that the fans are giving up on them. If these players have what it takes to be real contenders some day, then this is the time to show some of it.
I will stick with my stubborn optimism, and predict they take 2 of 3 from the Yanks. This team is better than it has shown so far and they will prove it over the next three days, I hope.

Wall Street has been selling people a bunch of garbage and getting rich for years now. In the NFL, a league where they have a salary cap and the avg rebuild to respectability is about 2 yrs, the Rams are going on 5. The Lions will never get there.
The NBA? Jokeville, salary cap and all! So if you really think Angelos is doing this all on purpose, and hiring guys to carry out some evil scheme to continue losing, well, he may not be alone. And it doesn't look like there's much you can do about it. On second thought, I guess you could wish that you owned a piece of it...

Birdfanman,
I would have to argue that Hernandez has been pitching better than we expected so far this year... I think he had one rough outing, but has pitched pretty well for us his last few times out...
I think we are fine 1-4 in the rotation, the question is who is going to grab that 5th spot?
I really don't think starting pitching is the real problem with this team, outside of Bergy's meltdowns, we have been getting some solid SP. As far as the bullpen, I like what little I have seen from Castillo and we'll see what kind of help Simon gives us... Our problem this season has been 50% Bullpen related and 50% Lack of productive hitting. Fix the pen and once these guys get out of this swing-at-everythink funk we should level off to play .500 ball the rest of the way... Unless Trembley keeps ruining the bullpen by over using guys and going back to the well when the guy has shown he hasn't got it (Albers, Johnson in the 9th Inning, etc.) and these guys really forgot how to hit! Let's hope for all our sakes this team turns out to be as entertaining as we expected before the season started... since it looks like Dave T is still going to be around for a while, what else do we have to look forward to?
Posted by: Tony P in AZ | April 27, 2010 5:32 PM
Tony -
Hernandez has been beyond lucky. If you take out his start against Oakland, he's got nine walks and only eight strikeouts in 17 innings.
If you're walking that many and not striking anyone out, you're bound to blow up eventually. Throw in the fact that Hernandez hasn't given up a home run (which is borderline miraculous) all season, and you've got a recipe for disaster.
Prediction: Hernandez falls apart in his upcoming home start against Boston and then gets destroyed in his start at Yankee Stadium.
vs. Boston: 4.1 innings, 5 ER, 5 BB, 1 HR
@ New York: 3.2 innings, 7 ER, 4 BB, 3 HR
I sure hope I'm wrong...

One of the many intelligent things that Earl Weaver did was to use long relief as a bridge between starting in AAA and starting in the majors. Not only Trembley but most current managers skip this step, and too often the AAA star struggles with the pressure of starting in the majors. Long relief is a better transition for the youngster, and also the team has less to lose if it turns out the pitcher isn't ready after all;
a failed start costs the team a game, while a failure in long relief merely turns a loss into a blowout.

Millwood pitched a no-no on this day in 2003. (And Phil Hughes had a no-hitter into the 8th inning of his start last week vs. Oakland.)
Read about it at:
http://oriolesshallreturn.blogspot.com/2010/04/another-millwood-no-hitter-in-offing.html
Not only am I predicting Millwood's first win tonight, I am also predicting A-Roid gets into a scuffle with T-Bone Shelby for "unknowingly" breaking unwritten baseball tradition by crossing the first-base-coach's box between innings.

And speaking of orange, you should probably change that background. I'm looking at your blog on a 17" screen and that's waaaaay too much orange, especially since the content only fills about half of the browser window.
Moving on to your prediction...
I'll say the Yanks win 8-2, backed by another solid start from Phil Hughes and home runs by Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson.
A-Rod will probably do something ignorant again, but since there isn't a person employed by the O's who's got half the balls that Dallas Braden has, nothing will happen.

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I'll play around with it and see what I can do. I'm certainly a rookie when it comes to blogs, and that's probably apparent.
I agree on the Braden bit. I love fiery players, and I'm pretty sure this roster doesn't have one. Seems George Sherrill had some. Millar definitely did.
I wish Angelos would rescind his ridiculous facial-hair policy. Wouldn't you love to see Nick up there with his off-season beard? Here it is for those of you who missed it: http://www.baltimoresun.com/media/photo/2010-01/51814144.jpg

Trembley should get some credit from some of you haters for starting Rhyne Hughes 3 games in a row and benching Atkins. (But again, it's a no-brainer, although the O's management is always slow to make these types of moves.)
Don't think we'll see Hughes face CC though, unless he really lights it up.

Hughes is getting the Maddox strikezone. The homeplate umpire has added six inches to the width of the plate, at least for lefthand hitters. Let's see how he does with Milwood.

Adam Jones, terrible at bat. Questionable pitch, on 0-1, swings, double play. HUGHES had just thrown eight, EIGHT, balls to the preceeding hitters. Where do you hide this guy in your lineup?
Posted by: Jay Peterson | April 27, 2010 7:54 PM
Jones. I don't even know what to say about him anymore. I cringe when he's up at the plate. He can't hit with 2 strikes, so it affects his entire at bat. He has learned nothing in his 2+ yrs at the major league level. Nothing. He had a chance to do some damage and as usual, failed.
Millwood should have been out of that inning 15 pitches ago.
Disappointing as usual.

Over the Winter, A M failed to get a longknocker. They have NONE! This, of course, is another thing that is going to jump up and bite him on the ass. The O's better think of something before everybody forgets to go to The Yard.

this might be a tad bit off topic , i mentioned in my comments about paul richards starting the pitch count. i would recoment reading the book (THE WIZARD OF WAXAHACHIE). the author of the book is warren corbett. the forward is by brooks robinson. the introduction is by tony la rusa. i haven't finished reading the book, but i am about half way through. i think it is quite a book about paul richards.

I remember last year when they sent Ray down to the minors to get straightened out, but less than 2 weeks later, he was back in Baltimore getting clobbered. I think Bergy should be down in the minors for at least 4-5 starts because the last thing you want to do is bring him up and he gets lit up. Take the time with him because guys like Hendrickson and Berken can alternate the starts till Bergy is truly ready to stay in Baltimore and not go back and forth to the Tides.

BECKETT HAS HAD A FEW BAD STARTS ON A GOOD TEAM, TIME TO KICK HIM TO THE CURB ALSO. GIVE THESE KIDS A FEW MORE THAN 3 STARTS BEFORE WRITING THEM OFF.

not brooks,
There's plenty to be negative about this year, but why is it that any O's player with any success is just lucky and all so many of you just predict ongoing failure. Hopefully your predictions for Hernandez will be as accurate as Tuesday's game.
Hernandez is a completely different pitcher from last year - he is throwing making progress developing his change-up and breaking ball and is consistently keeping the ball down. Yes WHIP is too high at 1.5, but he has stayed composed and battled out of trouble. He has been the victim of of some shakey defense and 3 of his 12 runs were given up by the bullpen after he departed. The same has been true of Matusz. Too bad a 25 year old pitcher has to get hammered while he's learning to pitch in the majors.....
