Orioles: Next man up
I've been a little preoccupied with the NFL draft and some other obligations today, so I'm just getting up to speed on the Orioles. Can't say I'm surprised at the roster move today, since Justin Turner had not provided an offensive spark and Miguel Tejada's return made an extra utility infielder unnecessary.
Rhyne Hughes deserved the call up. He made a real nice impression on the coaching staff during spring training and he was swinging the bat well at Triple-A Norfolk. He's still swinging the bat well, as evidenced by his RBI single in his first major league at-bat tonight and a second hit in the game.
Now, if Brian Matusz can just hang onto this slim lead. The Orioles have scored first a lot this season, but they have a bad habit of just scoring in one early inning and then waiting around until their opponent whittles the small lead away and wins at the end.
If the O's don't score some runs, I suspect it will happen again, but I'm trying real hard not to be fatalistic, no matter how logical that might seem.

The players need a boost and the only way to get one is with a win. I knew this would be a terrible team, but no one wants to see this. It's hard not to feel sorry for DT as well as some of the players.
Let's hope they hang on......

Pete - I don't usually comment, but DT HAS TO GO. Why he is not using Berken right now is beyond my comprehension. He also didn't even attempt to have that HR call reviewed. Get him out and get Davey Johnson back......

Matt Albers flat out SUCKS. I've never liked him...he's got mediocre talent and is way too inconsistent.
I can't believe he's continually taken a spot away from someone who would actually give us some production.
So much for 3-0 for Matusz.

3 run homer....buy albers a bus ticket to norfolk. Whats the worst season ever for 162 game schedule, 40-120 by the Mets? There will be talk of that soon fo rhte Orioles.

Okay, I have patience usually. But Albers blowing the lead really sucks. He needs to go. Our starting pitchers except for Brad have been doing a great job! We can't hold a lead!

Fat Albers blows another one

What baffles me even more is why Trembley keeps going to Albers in key situations. I haven't faulted Dave for much of this year's problems, but Albers is the worst of 4 or 5 evils in that bullpen.
It reminds me of Mazzilli's obsession with Mike DeJean several years back.
EDIT: Three run HR for Youk. IMO, this loss falls squarely on Dave. He should have let Matusz work out of the jam, and then turned to Hendrickson, one guy who's actually been throwing strikes and getting the opposition out this year.

Albers is the newest version of Baez. It's a shame a solid pitching performance gets ruined by a guy who has no business wearing an O's uniform(even though it's either Terry Matthews or Sir Sydney's old one).
No room for error but once again-same old story-no offense/lousy pen...
I suppose King Peter will wait until the O's are 2-25 before he cleans house.
Another lost season...Hey MacPhail nice PLAN!!!!!!!
Posted by: TerryP | April 24, 2010 9:34 PM
Too bad...... I wanted them to win this game in the worse way. Now it's just getting sad. You have to feel bad for the guys on the field (coaches and players).
DT is putting in the pitchers that AM has given him to work with. To blame him is to really not understand what you're watching.
Any move he makes backfires.... why?
Because most of the players just aren't good enough.
DT pushes the buttons he was given. And now people are actually saying Berken should have been brought in.
Berken.... a player who likely wouldn't be player for any other major league team.
Hey Pete, did you give them another week a few days ago?
Posted by: wayne | April 24, 2010 9:38 PM
Our bullpen sucks. I agree with Christopher--what about Hendrickson? We should go with the hot hand like Berken. Maybe getting Koji back will help too.

Feel bad for DT? Are you f-ing kidding me?This idiot puts Albers out there again to blow the lead? How many times does Albers have to blow games before DT gets the message? Genius manager, this is where Shmuck says any critcism of DT putting in Albers is hindsight....

I just knew once they put the Pillsbury Doughboy in that would be it. I just wished they would get rid of him . Send him somewhere, but out of an Oriole uniform. He is way inconsitent in his pitches. When he gave up that 3 run homer, it did not surprise me at all. Every time Trembley brings Albers in he makes a mess of things. He really gets rattled.

I know Pedroia would have been up with the bases loaded, but why would DT not walk Scutaro to load the bases and put the force on? Isn't that Baseball 101? Not saying that pedroia wouldn't have hit a GS off of albers anyway, but I was just amazed that we weren't loading the bases with only 1 out... Maybe it was the right move to pitch to Scutaro, but I would have walked him...
Posted by: Tony P in AZ | April 24, 2010 9:58 PM
Why does DT use Albers instead of Berken or Hendricks? Because he has pigeonholed his pitching staff and decided that Albers is his 7th-inning pitcher while Berken is a long reliever and Hendrickson is for lefty batters only. It takes more flexibility and savvy than DT has to alter his plan and use whoever is currently most effective. Side note: how many of Matusz's earned runs have been inherited runners pushed across by relief pitchers? Probably more than half!

I am so impressed with Rhyne Hughes. He is not intimitated by Boston at all. He plays like a real pro. talk about poise. That young man has it. I see a real future for him. Maybe he can lead this team around.
Posted by: Tessie | April 24, 2010 10:03 PM
Wow, 2-3 run dingers in one inning(kind of Earl Weaver-ish). Have we even had ONE 3-run Hr this year?
I guess you can blame most of this loss on DT but really, with the sad sacks down in the 'pen, chances are someone else would have coughed up the lead.
We don't have ONE guy that has been consistent. Sure, Hendrickson has been OK but do you expect him to get 9 outs, especially against the RHand lineup?
Oh well, back to NHL hockey...

albers has more appearances than any other Orioles reliever. Can somebody tell me why?You have Berken who has looked great out of the bullpen, and Castillo who looks good, and Hendrickson who has done a good job both this year and last and yet you bring in Albers after once again leaving Matusz in an inning to long.Did you see the look on Matusz's face after the end of the inning.Pure and utter disgust.Trembley who somehow after ending last year with 98 losses, was determined by the power that is,Angelos, not McPhail to have the team heading in the right direction. So I wonder what direction 2-16 is headed in.It's still April and we are already out of contention. How long Dear God before Somebody pull the plug on Trembley please, before he runs all the young talent we have. How about that Izturis, even though I thought he was safe ,swinging at the first pitch with Montanez coming up.He's fast enough to put pressure on the defense by bunting.Another horribly managed game by Dave Trembley.Only on the Angelosers would this man have a job.The Oriole Limbo-How low can we go before Dave has to go.By the way,to some of the posters on here, you were McPhail apologists early in the year, and now you're saying that it's not Trembley's fault that we're losing because he doesn't have the players. We have three sacrifice bunts all year in 18 games. There are multiple players who have more than that.Unfortuntely just not on the Orioles.

i am not a mat albers fan either. i have to ask the same question. why does dt bring albers in more often than other relievers. is albers shoulder still bothering him. when and if koji comes off the dl albers should get the ride to the minors. if i read the schedule correctly the o's & the yankess at camdon yars tuesday thru thursday. rain is in the fordast. maybe it will rain hard enough so that they will cancel the games
Posted by: leonard | April 24, 2010 11:40 PM
Wayne, clearly AM blew it with the bullpen, but you are letting Trembley off the hook way too easy. Trembley had a significant say in who he brought north - he completely missed what every scout in baseball apparently saw - that Gonzalez was hurt and not ready to pitch and he sticks with his guys regardless of results and there is no accountability. If Gonzalez doesn't blow those first two saves and they start out 3-1 a lot of things could have been different. Koji wouldn't have hurt either.
Hendrickson has been solid and yet on Friday he gives him one batter - Merideth walks one guy and he's out, but Albers gets to suck night after night.
I agree there are no great options out there and even Johnson can't seem to handle a pressure situation right now. There were not many great options out there, but it sure looks like Rodney or even Matt Capp were better choices (and no more money) than Gonzalez. But ,managing bullpen match ups is what makes some managers and destroys others - Dave is managing with desperation and you can see how all these guys are pressing and things go from bad to worse. Pitchers can't succeed when they pitch afraid to fail - that's what makes 3 different guys walk their first batter last night - including Johnson with the bases loaded and tonight was just ridiculous. How do you leave in Albers after the HR and then bring in Mikolio to pitch to Euk - Henrickson at least is a veteran - and who cares about righty lefty in that situation.
I think you should give Berken the benefit of the doubt - he had a solid minor league career - took his lumps last year, added two new pitches and looks like a different pitcher, I think if you go back to last year his real problems came the second time through line-ups, and he has good enough stuff to be a middle guy on 2/3 of the teams in MLB.
Posted by: Jeff | April 24, 2010 11:57 PM
@Jeff, Burt and Leonard
I know Albers had a good spring, but he has a hole in his arm which he's been pitching with for 2 years this August so without surgery he's not the same guy that was perhaps the star of the BP when he got here. He needs to have surgery or they need to cut him. Not being cruel, but how many times is he allowed to mess up and get the ball the next night? Hendrickson can start so the fact they are using him for a batter here and a batter there is pretty insane since he has the stamina and because like it or not, Mark is the best guy in the pen.
Looking at the games on Friday and Saturday, the O's blew the games with the BP. Guthire has surprised me in the way he's rebounded and Brian is one of the few reasons to watch this team, but I have to ask why Dave didn't pull the plug on Ohman on Friday night when clearly he lost command and tonight he brings in Matt Albers who's been getting lit up? I don't care if this KC, San Fran or Boston, no manager should still be in charge of a club that needs to win for almost 2+ plus weeks to get back to . 500 and it's only April! Pull the damn plug!

Glad to see the O's bring up some new blood, especially someone like Rhyne Hughes who is doing a pretty decent job in Norfolk. That's how it should work: do well and get promoted.
I am not on the Fire Dave Trembley bandwagon. He has an awful team to work with.
But with the calling up of Hughes, I'd like to see the O's shake things up and do what needs to be done. That is, if one isn't performing at the major league level, send them down to the minors. Jim Johnson, Matt Albers, Nolan Reimold, Adam Jones, and anyone else mired in mediocrity should go back to the minors to work things out.
It is probably too soon, but the O's might need to start thinking about swallowing some of that $$ they spent on free agents and outright release some of these guys, like Garrett Adkins and Julio Lugo.
And in the meantime, bring up some more young talent and let's see what they can do.
Posted by: Mark | April 25, 2010 8:57 AM
I give the O's credit for battling yesterday. They did not quit even after giving the two 3 run homers. It shows that with reasonable support from the bullpen, we could be competitive.
That being said, it is silly and just plain ridiculous to think that Albers and Mickelio (sp) have any chance of getting any one out. It is like throwing gasoline on fire. It is really time to we look around for some bullpen help now and cut ties with those who cannot do the job. It is really that simple. It does not matter where we get them; we need to change out all of the pitchers that have proven that they cannot do the job at the Major league level. How can we put guys like Albers in with the game on the line? The results are predictable 100 percent of the time and when you can predict the outcome before the pitcher comes into the game, it is time for a change. These pitchers are not major leaguers; the O's need admit that and move on. The sooner we do that, the sooner we will start winning.
Posted by: MAKA | April 25, 2010 9:10 AM
What message is being sent to the team when Albers is not only allowed to stay on the team but is being used time and again in crucial situations when he is NOT a major league pitcher? AM nad DT are enabling the losers on this team by keeping them. Albers, Johnson, Reimold, Iztarus and the ist baseman whose name I choose not to remember need to go to Norfolk. Bring up Arrietta to take Bergesen's spot. Bring up anyone to take Albers and Johnson's spot, bring up whomever to take Reimold's and Iztaur's spot (Scott Moore at SS?) do something to let these loser's know their continued lousy performance won't be tolerated. Trade Tejada for a decent reliever. Trade Scott for the same. Go young and find out what you have. Could the O's have a worse recordif they do these things? The plan is failing.
Posted by: Tom | April 25, 2010 11:25 AM
I have been a defender of DT. The whole, Rome was not built in a day thing.
However, calling on Albers in this situation is a horrible move. Is Albers better than Matusz after 102 pitches? No. Is Albers better than Ohman (0.00 era)? No. Hendrickson? No. Any other picher in the pen? No. Albers has been Bergenson bad.
You are 2-15 with a 2 run lead on the road and you have lost 4 in a row. You need a win in the worst way. Now is the time to think outside of the box. Put the script in your back pockett and give the team a chance to win the game. You have to go with the best pitcher available right now. That would be Matusz (let him pitch), Hendrickson or Ohman. Is tht murderers row? No. But it is the best you have. That is what you have to go with.
I would say DT is done as well. The next off day may be his last. I was thinking he needed to win last Wed. vs the Mariners to keep his job into the Sox series.
Posted by: birdfanman | April 25, 2010 11:53 AM
I have to agree with previous comments that Albers is just not cutting it. It appears to me he is only on the roster in an effort to make a bad trade look good (Tejada 2 years ago). The Orioles appear to have someone at Norfolk who could probably do a much better job if given the opportunity and that's Chris George. George has a great ERA and strikeout to walk ratio plus previous major league experience. However, the Orioles probably won't consider this move because George is a left handed pitcher and the Orioles have some egg headed notion that they can't have more than 2 lefty relievers at one time. In my opinion it doesn't matter if a guy is left handed, right or a basket case, if he can get the job done then he's your man.
