Orioles: Let Matusz figure it out
Though I understand the logic of removing Brian Matusz from tonight's game after he allowed two baserunners in the seventh inning, I've reached the point -- and I bet Matusz agrees with me -- where I believe he deserves a chance to get out of that jam. Once again, a pitcher gets taken out because he hit the magic 100-pitch count, but I thought the idea was to make these guys go farther into the game.
The fact that Matusz walked a guy and gave up a hit doesn't mean that he's not the best guy to pitch to the next batter, especially when the O's bullpen has given Dave Trembley little reason to be confident that the game isn't about to blow up in his face -- as it did again tonight.
I'm sure Trembley just wanted to make sure that Matusz didn't lose the game after pitching so well for that long, but I bet he'd rather have his fate in his own hands than in somebody's else's right now.
It isn't Trembley's fault that the bullpen can't nail down a game, but at some point he's going to have to find out if Matusz is good enough to get out of a late-inning jam. If not tonight, then when?

As I said in the other thread, I haven't blamed Trembley for much this year - I think he's done the best with what he's had - but tonight's loss falls squarely on him.
I don't know why he keeps bringing in Albers in key situations, but that aside...Pete can you explain to me why we're not seeing more Hendrickson or Berken. I know Berken is a "long" guy, but he and Hendrickson are the only guys getting anyone out lately.
Or why not Castillo? He's in now, but no sign of him last night or earlier tonight. Why not go to the new guy instead of the guys who continue to come up short?
Trembley has been okay so far this year, but his pitching/bullpen management has become very poor as of late.

Pete, I'm about ready to give up on this team. I don't know that I'll make it out of April. And this is from (not a warehouser) but one of the most level, patient, 'go with the flow, just enjoy the game' fans you can find in this town. And a season ticket holder at that.
As for your comments...this team and Trembley are in a no-win situation. The O's have, many times in the last few seasons, been in that exact situation. And simply put: for a bad baseball team, there is no right decision.
In the last few weeks, both Matusz and Millwood went late into games and found ways to pretty much implode on themselves. And, sure, that was the right decision because we all knew the bullpen couldn't hold it. But now we have seen that the starters can't keep it together and the relievers can't hold on at the end.
I was going to say something positive - you know, along the lines of "at least the bullpen made the Sox earn it tonight" - but I have none of that left. It was pathetic and embarrassing to watch this team walk three straight players to give up the loss. But the homerun was just as fitting.
Here's the real game: how many innings will it take the Orioles to score the same 6 runs the Sox put up in the 7th? My bet is at least 20. probably more.

It isn't Trrmbley's fault? Pete, have you seen Matt Albers pitch this season?? The media's job is to hold people accountable. Hold Dave Trembley accountable! What are you scared you'll never get an interview with him if you criticize him? Stop being a Trembley apologist and do your job.
Posted by: JAS | April 24, 2010 10:00 PM
Why is Albers is there AT ALL in key situations? He has proven, time and again, that he'll never be more than a mop-up pitcher.
At least we didn't have to watch Atkins up there flailing away at and beating balls into the infield.

trembley needs to be fired and take albers with him when he leaves...unbelievable that they're going to lose the game.
Posted by: Dave in Buffalo | April 24, 2010 10:06 PM
It is very difficult to lose this many games in such a variety of ways. But if you look closely, you can always find either a questionable move (pinch running for Wieters in the top of the eighth last night while trailing 3-2), a fundamental lapse (not turning a double play, missed cutoff), or lack of hustle (see Julio Lugo). Baseball is a game of inches. Under Trembley we have never done the little things that add up to those inches.

Pete
I understand your point, but a quality major league team takes him out in the spot every time. He was at 100 pitches, but more important had a tough 5th inning where he threw about 25 pitches and was losing his command - got through the 6th OK, but on the leadoff batter in the 7th he was 0-2 and then threw 5 straight balls (one was fouled off) and the last two missed by 2 feet. Trembley left him in to pitch to the lefty, but he threw an 86 mph fastball belt high in the center of the plate. So if you have a major league pitcher in the 7th inning you go to him. That said, they don't have that pitcher right now, but I still don't think you risk your future ace to salvage one game in this debacle of a season.
Posted by: Jeff | April 24, 2010 10:15 PM
Hopefully this at least means the offense is waking up.
All those stranded runners came back to haunt us again though. And who'd have thought that Youk homer would be completely necessary?
This team is making me bi-polar.

What are the O's going to do with Reimold? Like Bergeson he was competing for ROY last year before an injury ended his year and like Brad he clearly is not sufficiently recovered to play right now. It is actually sad to watch him trying to play and he is pressing so badly. I've been saying all year that he has been trying to pull everything while last year he consistenlty went the other way and tonight Brady finally said it. I hate to say it, but the O's either need to send him to Norfolk to play his way back into form or they need to shut him down and put him on the DL. It seems like the organization has no idea what to do.

As I said in the last thread...
I know Pedroia would have been up with the bases loaded, but why would DT not walk Scutaro to load the bases and put the force on? Isn't that Baseball 101? Not saying that pedroia wouldn't have hit a GS off of albers anyway, but I was just amazed that we weren't loading the bases with only 1 out... Maybe it was the right move to pitch to Scutaro, but I would have walked him... am I wrong?
Posted by: Tony P in AZ | April 24, 2010 10:26 PM
With All Those Pitchers Not Being Used Why Go To Albers All The Time? No Wonder He Gave Up The First Homerun The Guy's Arm Is Being Overused.
Posted by: Stephanie | April 24, 2010 10:26 PM
I'm with Jeff on this one Pete. Matusz pitched a gem, but he was done, I would have pulled him then too, but why oh why do you bring in Albers? Talk about gasoline on a fire.
Not just another loss, but yet another really demoralizing loss. Another excellent start wasted, another bullpen breakdown, and even with the late show of offense in the 9th, another game where the O's kept getting men on base and just left them there. Please God, make it stop.
Posted by: Roy | April 24, 2010 10:28 PM
Let me first say this is not one of those angry rants. Albers needs to be released - not sent to the minors, but released. He had one good 2 month run 2 years ago, but since then has been out of shape and incredibly inconsistent. He is supposed to be a sinker ball specialist, but has been killed by the long ball. There is absolutely no chance that he turns around and becomes an effective pitcher. it looked like he had a decent spring, but that's spring - he can't throw his breaking ball for a strike and eventually he puts a non-sinking fast ball in the hitting zone and it's game over. Koji will be back next week and Albers should be the one to go. Next will be Mikolio, but he has good enough stuff to give him a little more time. - I think he is Daniel Cabrera though - fun to watch, but will always be wild with and ERA of 9.00
Posted by: Todd | April 24, 2010 10:29 PM
I agree somewhat...but not at all.
In order for him to make the next jump, Matusz needs to learn how to pitch on a near empty tank. He's had several starts where his stuff would sometimes be there, sometimes not, but he always manages to find a groove. It's that last inning where you see his command get a little uncharacteristically wobbly, and he allows a baserunner or two, where he needs to find a way to get those batters out when his stuff isn't as sharp as it was when the game started. I definitely agree with Peter that he needs to face these situations eventually.
My only concern is that we forget that Matusz ran thru the minors and by most other standards, he might be called rushed. It's only a credit to his talent and polish that he's taken to it. He's a college pitcher with some real mileage on the arm. It's something to monitor, esp. in a young pitcher who might not actually have built up the physical stamina yet to take the beating of a 200 IP season.
Even Jim Palmer who was a workhorse needed 3-4 seasons, mixed in with an injury, when he was Brian's age to acclimate to a full major league season.
Posted by: Eddie in NYC | April 24, 2010 10:30 PM
2 3- run jacks in the same inning-hard to even imagine. Albers, Kam whatever his name is. That was atrocious pitching.
Well, somebody better figure it out.
How about pulling a Piniella- take Hernandez and put him in the pen and get somebody in here to be the #5.
I mean somebody figured out that Atkins needs to sit, so something with that bullpen.
I can't believe what i just watched.
Posted by: jim66 | April 24, 2010 10:33 PM
Hope springs eternal - Jake Arrietta was dominant again in Norfolk - 7 innings 0 runs, 2 hits, 1 BB and 11 K's !!! ERA 0.36 - that's what a phenom is supposed to look like. He clearly is passing by Tillman and will probably grab the 4th spot in the rotation before long. If by any chance Bergeson can bounce back to form, maybe Hernandez can go to the pen and give them a swing a miss guy that they so badly need down there, BTW I don't mean that as a demotion for Hernandez - he has done everything you could want from a 5th starter.
Posted by: Jeff | April 24, 2010 10:36 PM
Brian is a saavy pitcher. He would found a way to pitch out of the jam. How DT can bring in the Doughboy to blow the game, time and time again. His history speaks for itself. Poor Brian. I feel so bad for him, Hernandez, Millwood and Guthrie. What a shame. A year when we finslly have some good starters, and we now have a lousy offense and bull pen. Keep bring the AAA kids up to bail us out.
Posted by: Tessie | April 24, 2010 10:42 PM
Tony P
Reasonable question, but while still holding a 2 run lead, I don't think you put the go-ahead run on base in the 7th inning. Also, Albers has struggled with control and hasn't gotten the ground ball consistently so I'd worry about a repeat of last night (walk in a run) and finally you have to think you have a better shot to get out Scutaro than pitch to Pedroia followed by Martinez. The real question is why Albers in that situation. The only reliable reliever is Hendrickson and Trembley has used him for one batter in this series.
Posted by: Todd | April 24, 2010 10:42 PM
The red sox were jumping on Matusz in the previous inning. Trembley can't make the BP pitch better, but he can notice how horrible Albers has been and perhaps give Berken a try.
Trembley's days are numbered. It happens to all O's managers. I think it says a whole lot more about the franchise than it does about any one particular manager.

Thanks Todd... I was wondering why no one else was mentioning that... I guess I am not any better than Dave T!
Good comeback by the boys, at least they showed some fight! I like what I saw from Hughes tonight...
Posted by: Tony P in AZ | April 24, 2010 10:47 PM
Matt Albers? Seriously? As soon as I saw him warming in the pen I knew it was over just as everyone not named Dave Trembley knew it.
Posted by: Tom M | April 24, 2010 10:48 PM
matusz is young and its early in the season. I see no reason to keep him in the game. there has to be a better option than albers though. as we get into june and july, i would be more in favor of letting matusz go to higher pitch counts. its deflating to lose again, but its a long season and we should have plenty of more chances to see matusz take on a similar challenge later this year, and we can leave him in then.
Posted by: joe | April 24, 2010 10:52 PM
Simple stuff. If you can't get Scuttaro out in that situation, and worse yet give him an inside fastball to hit and he of all the hitters in that lineup beats you for a 3 run hr you cannot pitch in the major leagues.
Let's try out that rule. The bar's not set too high is it?
I mean, how many excuses out of that bullpen are they going to stand for?
Next one up.
Posted by: jim66 | April 24, 2010 10:54 PM
Tom M, you are absolutely right and so is Todd about releasing Albers - remember Dave - "accountability". When did Andy decide middle relievers had to be rejects - how about trying someone like Tillman in the pen - put a real pitcher with a live arm out there - just like Palmer started in the pen. If Andy had signed a real closer, you could push Johnson back to the 7th (since he clearly can't handle pressure any longer), Koji in the 8th and then have a veteran presence in the 9th with Hendrickson and Berken handling the earlier innings and long relief. Let's get rid of guys that have had 3 surgeries and are living off a decent stretch 3 years ago.
Posted by: Jeff | April 24, 2010 10:58 PM
I agree. It is time to bring some fresh blood to the pen. The only good news is tomorrow should be the end of the line for Trembley - with them returning home and day off Monday, it is time. I know people say the bullpen isn't his fault, but 1) he brought them north, 2) he has been over managing because he is desparate - he should have just left Henrickson in last night instead of treating him like a lefty specialist and 3) he brought in a guy tonight in game situation that has clearly been off his game. By the way, besides maybe Hendrickson who has been the O's best reliever - hint was a much maligned starter a year ago - Let's double down on that and try one of the other young starters in the pen - just like Phil Hughes last year

albers has more appearances than any other Orioles reliever. Can somebody tell me why?You have Berken who has looked great out of the bullpen, and Castillo who looks good, and Hendrickson who has done a good job both this year and last and yet you bring in Albers after once again leaving Matusz in an inning to long.Did you see the look on Matusz's face after the end of the inning.Pure and utter disgust.Trembley who somehow after ending last year with 98 losses, was determined by the power that is,Angelos, not McPhail to have the team heading in the right direction. So I wonder what direction 2-16 is headed in.It's still April and we are already out of contention. How long Dear God before Somebody pull the plug on Trembley please, before he runs all the young talent we have. How about that Izturis, even though I thought he was safe ,swinging at the first pitch with Montanez coming up.He's fast enough to put pressure on the defense by bunting.Another horribly managed game by Dave Trembley.Only on the Angelosers would this man have a job.The Oriole Limbo-How low can we go before Dave has to go.By the way,to some of the posters on here, you were McPhail apologists early in the year, and now you're saying that it's not Trembley's fault that we're losing because he doesn't have the players. We have three sacrifice bunts all year in 18 games. There are multiple players who have more than that.Unfortuntely just not on the Orioles.

Boys & girls, we need to lighten up, love the blOriOles unconditionally, take what the team is giving us: lots of losses. Not just this season, either. The blOriOles lead the AL in franchise losses (or so says the Baseball Almanac). Counting Saturday's defeat by the DedSox, the blOriOle franchise has lost 8,932 games.
Ok, so it's not as many as the Female Juvenile Equines, whose 10,000+ is the most for any franchise in any sport. But still, it's the blOriOles gift to us, and we should acknowledge the generosity.

Don't you understand?
Inside DT's brain the left hemisphere first part followed by the right hemisphere two thirds through and then thwhole brain together closing
Berken is the "5th inning guy" he can't pitch in the 7th or 8th
Hendrickson is your "situational lefty" he can't even pitch a whole inning as his arm may literally fall from the socket.
Albers is your "7th inning guy" He doesn't even pay attention to the game till like the 6th inning and then he dozes off after 1 out in the 8th (cause that's not "his inning""
Johnson is your "8th inning guy" I know one time he was left in to pitch the 9th by mistake and we accidentally won the game but he MUST stay in his role.
The roles are not flexible. These roles are made of iron and steel.
Gonzales is/was/will be immediately upon reinstatement to his role our 9th inning guy...... well, he was, now I'm feeling kind of panicky cause my great slotting isn't quite "What what do you mean 10th inning" and what happens When I need someone in the 3rd inning? Arrrggghhh does not compute....error error not registering must have rolls must have order....Where's my doughboy??
"What do I do when I bring in Mark for a lefty and then the other manager brings out a righty AHHHH!!!! Someone get me some Stromboli and Micholbi" ,.....does not compute....I SAid order in this pen now sit down and What? We lost before I could get my situational righthander "what? I don't have one of them.
coming soon.... a day in the mind of DT during lineup makeout time

First 10 games 1 - 9
2nd 10 games 1 - 7
See NO improvement. DT has mismanaged the Os so much, has he also managed the fans OUT of the season?
Posted by: birdwatcher | April 24, 2010 11:37 PM
DT ponders another lineup...
Ok no Roberts check....
next choice Who swings at lots of balls in the dirt? jones? check I believe his bubbles may get into the pitchers head early and Jones may actually call me out if I hit him below 6th.
Next Montanez I don't know why but you don't know why not, so go....
Nick? No, he takes too many pitches to be your leadoff hitter, we need someone who will swing and miss alot to show that we are coming right after them....
Plus if Nick hits leadoff he will vacate his "slot" There will be no one capable of making the 3rd out of the inning after Jones strikes out and and next player grounds out.
"What? Nick has a great eye? Well, so do fighter pilots what's your point, "
Look Nick will get his share of at bats at the top of the lineup when Roberts comes back.
you see the lineup is like modern art where anything goes except orderliness. we don't want the hitters to get too comfortable in their spots, That
s why I believe over 120 combinations should be used in making out lineups. And never put your guy with the best OBP batting leadoff because that's too predictable.
Look, the only time you get real regimented and predictable is when slotting relievers... "Did I tell you how I slot my relievers? Wait, why are you running away......
Listen...
Castillo He's my 8th inning guy when we are behind That's his role He does really well there What? Johnson? ahhh does not compute error Grrhh!!!!!! Hurry hit control alt delete NOW must have no order must have order!!!!!!!
I love ya Dave but somethings gotta give...Come with me now

Please let Dave say goodbye for some very relaxing ice fishing.
When an Oriole die-hard like me has had it--completely--please understand that it is time for a change.
This was supposed to be the season when Baltimore flexed some muscle and showed baseball that the rebuilding was blossoming.
2-16 is more than embarrassing. We are the laughingstock of baseball.
Dave's a good guy. Make the next Oriole manager a good guy, who can fight, pitch-by-pitch, and show the team in the dugout every night--by his leadership-- that the Baltimore Orioles are going to win.
Posted by: Barry | April 25, 2010 12:05 AM
Pete,
I seldom agree with you on anything baseball, but personally would have left Matusz in the game. Not that good teams would do this because the GM would have gotten the manager some decent arms that could get guys out. But that didn't happen here in Balmore, so Dave must deal with what he has been dealt, and when I managed asked myself, can I bring in anything as good as I already had on the mound and if the answer was no and the Pitcher had no problems I left him in!
But I'll keep saying it all year, I told you so!
The truth will set you free!

More on Trembley...Why didn't he pinch run for Wieters in the ninth? Wieters was the tying run. Lugo would have made it to third on Luke Scott's single. This mistake didn't cost us the game tonight, but it easily could have. Trembley also left Atkins on third with one out up one run in the eighth on opening night when Lugo was on the bench. These are easy calls, and he keeps screwing them up. Can anyone explain this?
Posted by: Jim | April 25, 2010 12:16 AM
2-16!
I predicted 63-99 at season's start. Extrapolating from current numbers, the team's on pace for 18-144. So, assuming things can't possibly stay this bad forever, maybe something like 35 wins, 127 losses is probable.
127 losses! Beyond belief--that the Baltimore Orioles, once baseball's proudest franchise, is being talked about this way!
Today's infuriating loss, like so many before, is directly attributable to Trembley, MacPhail and Angelos. Trembley, for once again demonstrating that he is the stupidest manager in baseball and that he can be counted on to do exactly the wrong thing in managing a game, MacPhail for assembling this pathetic team, and Angelos for refusing to spend the money needed to improve and, perhaps more importantly, for refusing to trust baseball matters to powerful and effective baseball men (like Gillick and Johnson) who would not play second fiddle to him and who insisted on freedom and absolute control of all baseball decision-making.
Angelos has neither the security nor the inner strength to welcome such men into his domain, so remains stuck with the procession of subservient incompetents who have collectively driven this franchise into the ground.
To return to the current moment and to try to salvage something from this train-wreck, a few suggestions.
1. Fire Trembley immediately. Put the bench coach in charge (if necessary for the rest of this year) until a deal can be struck with a manager who has shown success in the majors--my first choice would be Johnson, but if PA can't bring himself to stomach that, then Valentine.
2. Fire MacPhail immediately. Choose a good baseball mind from within the front office (assuming there is one there), whoever that might be, to run things until year's end, and then bring in a successful, aggressive, ambitious (and preferably youngish) GM to take over and start a REAL rebuilding effort, rather than the spin-factory that fans have been insulted with over the last three years.
As far as the actual team is concerned..., where to start...?
Release, trade, send down, or otherwise get rid of: Albers, Atkins, Gonzalez, Mickolio, Ohman, Meredith, Izturis, Lugo, Scott.
Reconstruct the bullpen around Williamson (whom anybody less out of it than Trembley would recognize as the team's best current reliever), Castillo, and Berken. Add to the pen from the minors, or, through acquisitions from the outside--SMART acquisitions this time, please, made by somebody other than MacPhail.
Bring up Arrieta to replace Bergeson in the starting rotation. (Everyone's swearing Bergeson's fine physically; I don't think so. I suspect the injury from that imbecilic commercial is still hampering him.)
Move Tejada (who's a real baseball player, and who, even with advancing age and declining abilities, is a pleasure to watch play) back to SS. Play Wigginton at 2B every day, and then move him to 3B, once Roberts returns. Keep Hughes at 1B for an extended period, say 2 months, and if that doesn't work out bring back Aubrey. Keep Montanez at LF, although he's pretty hopeless with the bat, because we seem to have no options there. Acquire a big bat for LF as soon as possible through trade. Put Reimold on extended DL and then send him to AAA until he's healthy and back to last year's form. Trade Pie once he recovers; the team can't afford any more of AM's pet projects. We need a legit, consistent, big-time bat in LF.
Fire Crowley, Kranitz, the bullpen coach, Samuel, the base-running coach, and whoever's responsible for strength and conditioning immediately. Use stopgaps from the minors to fill in until the new manager arrives, and then give him freedom to bring in whomever he wants. If the manager is a major figure, the coaches will be commensurately accomplished and successful, because, once again, a powerful manager will not be threatened by powerful coaches, and will know who the best coaches are.
All this will mean essentially writing off this season, but this season is over anyway. All this will also cost quite a bit of money, especially the eating of several stupid contracts from AM's reign, but an awful lot of damage needs to be repaired, and repaired quickly. Otherwise, this franchise is headed toward a genuine catastrophe, which, might, in the not distant future, see the end of professional baseball in Baltimore.

I am happy to see Hughes playing for the O's, but no one can convince me that Lugo should be the one staying and Turner should be the one going back to the Tides. Lugo is hitting .111 and he's not even hustling. I actually would like to see the O's send Reimold down because he's not close to 100% and I think time to work at a slower pace in the minors will serve him well.
I am not a DT fan and was against his return to start the 2010 season, but whether you like him or hate him, he has to go. This is O's team is a disgrace.

Jim Palmer wrote in his book, "Together We Were Eleven Foot Nine", that Earl Weaver, despite often wanting to remove Palmer in tight situations late in a game, wouldn't do it.
Why not? Because he knew he didn't have anyone in the bullpen who was as good as Palmer was, even after 100+ pitches.
I think that's really the situation we're in right now with Matusz. It's not like we've got Mariano Rivera in the pen to replace him. When it's a choice of Matusz after 100 pitches or a fresh Matt Albers, I'll take Matusz every time.
It's time for Trembley (or whoever will be replacing him after today's game) to recognize this and let Matusz sleep in the bed he makes.

Someone needs to tell Dave Trembley and Andy MacPhail that the base on balls is still allowed by the rules of baseball. Anyone surprised Markakis has only two RBI? The three batters in front of him are Jones (OBP .235), Montanez (OBP .182) and Izturis (OBP .255). If there is no one on base you can't drive them in. It is very obvious that batting 1-2 need to be Markakis/Wigginton take your pick). Batting 3 should be Jones (he's fast and strikes out alot so you won't have so many GIDP) and then Wieters (Slow but better than Tejeda) and then hope for the best. This team is hideous and repulsive beyond words and constructed so badly offensively that it has no chance of winning. At least they can make the best of a bad situation with a little thought. BTW, I saw last night Jim Edmonds was signed for only $850,000. Even as a broken down 40 year old he still had an OPS over .800. Why not sign a guy like him to teach the young guys how to get on base rather than wasting millions on Tejeda.

Albers pitched the night before -- and not well. There were fresh arms available, and pitchers the Red Sox hadn't seen as often, or at all.
It was good to see the offensive rally -- a little spark that fell short. But this is a team that's sleep walking, has no leadership, has no fire. I live in Red Sox country and root for the Orioles (at least up to now). When the camera focuses on the Orioles dugout I see a bunch of blank stares. Trembley looks like he's just sleep walking, or baffled as to his next move.
So instead of a burning desire to win, they are tentative waiting for something to happen that will assure a loss. Leadership can help cure that.

Its amazing to see someone like Brady come in the booth and know more about the players than trembely does and he's right there with them every day. i just don't get the media's softball treatment of mcPhail and trenbley this year.McPhial has spent stupid money the past two years on players nobody else would touch.I guarantee you Gonzalez has more than arm problems. nobody acts that flaked out in games unless there's a mental problem also. Ohman is a bum who can't throw strikes so is Miclilio like I've been saying for 2 years.

How do all of you kool aid drinkers like this rebuiding plan now HOW DO YOU LIKE IT NOW. I told everybody who would listen that this season would go down as one of the worst in oriole history. Thanks ANDY you had to bring back a lame duck manager to baby sit instead of mange. HOW DO YOU ALL LIKE IT NOW.everything that i said has come true so far so keep on bashing me , gil, wayne, and everybody else who tried to tell you what was going on. This team is in complete shambles . Once again thanks Andy you actually have set this team backwards instead of making progress.

When I saw the title of this post, I thought it was referring to Matusz figuring out that he had signed with a franchise that was not going to get any better and that he should get on the phone with Boras to get him out of Baltimore!

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor,
God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.
Fading light, dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night.
Thanks and praise, for our days,
'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky;
As we go, this we know, God is nigh.
Sun has set, shadows come,
Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds
Always true to the promise that they made.
While the light fades from sight,
And the stars gleaming rays softly send,
To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend

I'm done getting upset about the pathetic performance of the O's organization! I am using my entertainment dollars on things worth wild! I can still get my baseball fix by attending Hagerstown Sun's games. While I will always be an O's fan, I no longer can support the direction this organization is going in. You might see a shift in the way things are done when and if the last 9k paying fans stop attending.

STUPID & IGNORANT FANS.....
To blame Trembley for any of this makes you the premier ignorant fans in baseball.
This man is a puppet. This man paints by numbers. The numbers MacPhail gave him. To not understand this makes people in Baltimore dumber than usual.
The names don't matter. Whether it's Gonzales, Albers, Johnson, why does it matter? Oh, but now everyone is acting like Trembley should just put Hendrickson and Berken out there every night. As if these guys are great relievers. Good Lord people. Do you hear yourselves?
The minute Trembley is fired, you all will feel SO much better. But guess what you imbeciles? You'll still have the same pathetic bullpen and the same anemic line-up.
Just look at this ridiculously stupid Blog. Look what you people are actually saying. You are actually blaming the MANAGER for an of this. You are actually blaming the manager for the CRAP he has to put out on the field each night.
And as for Matusz? You people act like he's the next coming. Look around the league you morons. There are young pitchers who are doing just as well, if not better, who don't start to lose it every time they reach the 7th inning. You don't think Trembley wanted to keep him in the game? Do you think maybe that Trembley has been given ORDERS to keep him to a strict pitch count?
Put the blame where it's suppose to go. Andy MacPhail is terrible, and he is actually making baseball in Baltimore before he arrived look good. In other words, he's doing the impossible.
Yeah, fire Trembley. That's the answer. Baltimore fans make Philly fans look BRILLIANT.

I'm as disgusted as anyone at the start of this season, but it has little to do with the long term success of any rebuilding plan. Reacting to rashly to this would be the worst thing they can do. Look at the facts - starting pitching was AM's first priority and it is dramatically improved and getting better with guys like Arrietta on the way and personally I think Bergeson will straighten out his physical and mential issues. Yes the bullpen stinks, and Andy deserves 80% of the blame for its horrid performance, but does anyone think that group of characters is Andy's long term plan for the pen. I hated the Gonzalez signing, but you figured he would at least be serviceable for a year of two and still may be. Kioji's health was a gamble, but if he is in there, they probably have a few more wins.
Does anyone think Tejada or Atkins are part of the long term plan? Weiters is continuing to improve, Nick is Nick and if Roberts isn't hurt you add another couple of wins thus far, if only for the games they lost defensively. Jones has been disappointing, but I'm not ready to throw him overboard yet and when healthy Reimold can be a legitimate middle of the line-up guy - they have to decide what to do with him right now though.. Yes, that's a lot of ifs, but that's what rebuilding is - 4 years ago we had nothing like this to point to - No Matusz, now Weiters, no Jones, No Arrietta, Tillman, hernandez etc...
No one thought this team would play .500 this year. If they had one decent reliever this team would be 7-11 or better which would group them with a lot of teams.
Trembley needs to go - in part because several of these losses really are his fault and in part just because that's the way it goes when you go 2-16 - something needs to happen to release the pressure.
But to say it is going backwards is just simply ignoring the long-term aspects of what is developing.

I am not short on criticizing Trembley for his unusual (and often without reason) moves.
Removing Matusz at that juncture in the game will not be one of mine. Unlike the extra inning loss where Matusz eventually got a no decision, he was not allowed to face the go-ahead run after pitching well and well into the game.
Two points.
One, Matusz is still young. Very Young. It is important not to burn him out as many other phenoms have done from overuse due to success. Again, I point to The Kiddie Korp of 1960, Wally Bunker, Doc Gooden, the Billy Ball A's, etc.
Two, Matusz has not deserved the stature of being a one-man band on the pitching rubber. There is no doubt he is the Orioles' best player. There is no doubt the bullpen is an afterthought of plug-ins who are nearly everyday players themselves despite the improvement in the starting rotation as a whole.
The collapsing bullpen and team batting slump is no reason to keep Matusz in there. Let him earn his comparisons to Jim Palmer rather than look at the rest of the team and say he's Palmer II by default.
I don't want to say what's the difference between 3-15 and 2-16 even assuming Matusz would have pulled a Houdini as I still root for every win. However, looking at Matusz long term is the same as looking at the Orioles long term as he is the real deal.
Trembley did the right thing there.
Now, about Matt Albers ...
Posted by: waspman | April 25, 2010 9:21 AM
FInally Pete says something intelligent. The other posters are dead wrong that every other manager would have pulled Matusz. In baseball pitchers always earn the right to win or lose the game. He should have definitely been allowed to pitch to the next batter. A walk and a single isn't exactly falling apart.
On the flip side, Albers. Trembly failed as a manger twice. Albers sorely lacks confindence so Trembly inserts him into the pressure cooker again...where was Hendrickson or Berken? FIRE TREBLEY FIRE TREMBLEY now!
Posted by: Steven | April 25, 2010 9:27 AM
Yo, Barry enough with the poems okay, and you too white feather. We feel bad enough as it is without the somnabalistic sonets...On to another subject... What? No one up on the idea of changing the team's name. Come on. Do it. Ya see, that way the O's aren't losing, it's those Baltimore Titanics. Change the name, it's been done in the past. The Phillies changed their's to the Blue Jays after a really horrible season. Pittsburg(h) and Philly became the Pittsadephia Steagles, for the duration (of the second world war). Even the Yankees tried the "Highlanders" handle for a couple of woeful seasons. (Before they got the Baltimore Babe, which changed everything of course.)I don't care, I'm going to do it on my own. From now on the Orioles haven't lost a game, it's those damn Titanics, and Peter Angelos Esq. is the skipper. GLUG, GLUG, GLUG.

Interesting comment about pitchcounts. I argued this many times on your blog several months ago and you expressed your view that the team knew best. I now welcome you to the land of the obvious. It took you a long time to get here but welcome anyway.
Posted by: abc123 | April 25, 2010 9:40 AM
The Orioles relievers cannot command the most basic pitch in baseball, which is a good four seam fastball low and on the outside corner. If either Mikolio or Albers could have located that pitch, maybe a ground ball results. Maybe Wieters isn't calling for the pitch, which also makes me wonder. Maybe Trembley isn't calling for Wieters to call the pitch in those situations, which also makes me wonder.
Pitching in and up in those situations against the Red Sox gets you two three run home runs. If that's where the Orioles were actaully tring to go in both situations, then it is time to remove Dave Trembley.
Posted by: Gil | April 25, 2010 9:47 AM
You are correct Peter! That's what we've been saying right along. This is why Trembley HAS TO GO. Fire him! He just does NOT know when to pull a pitcher. And isn't Alber's state of the "art"? This is the worst bullpen in major league baseball history. I've had a thought which is rare in itself. Bring up the entire
Bowie Baysox and send the O's down (Trembley with them). Bowie is doing real good this year. And since the O's would probably be losing at the single A level I think this should be considered. Perhaps keep a couple of the O's up here. And what a waste of Wigginton this year. He's hot but it just doesn't matter. I'm still on my earlier prediction of 2-160. Amazing. And yesterday's game. 6 runs on 17 HITS!!
Such a remarkable WASTE!~!
Posted by: oldetoys | April 25, 2010 9:58 AM
It's a miracle... I agree Pete.
Well said. We aren't going to compete this year, so why not let the youngsters learn how to get out of there own jams. If he loses it, he will at least learn what he needs to do differently next time.
The 100 pitch count is a joke and always has been.
So is Trembley.
Posted by: Boo Bird | April 25, 2010 10:04 AM
That is the most sense you have ever made, Mr. Schmuck. I could not agree more. Let the kid get out of it. Let the kid blow it. Let the kid start a bench-clearing brawl. Just let the kid do SOMETHING. The bullpen can't blow it if they're not in there. Let's let someone else blow it for once. Or maybe, just maybe, let's let someone else play actual baseball.
Posted by: Anonymous | April 25, 2010 10:21 AM
As hard it may be to believe, making sure Matusz makes it through to 2011 healthy and improving is more important than the (then) 2-15 Orioles beating the Red Sox in late April. I think you can criticize the choice of using Albers, but I don't think you can criticize the choice to lift Matusz.
Posted by: Mitch | April 25, 2010 10:28 AM
Mitch,
You must be new to this blog. The kool aid drinkers were predicting 85 wins--check the archives
"This is the best team going north since I've been here" -Said Andy MacPhail--
He really believed it too. He thinks Atkins was an "impact bat" too. Not a joke
Posted by: best team heading north since Andy's been here | April 25, 2010 10:32 AM
If Matusz is the guy we all think he is, then he didn't want to come out. He deserves the chance to win it or lose it right there. And he's the best we got. I would want to play for a manager that believed in me as a player and Trembley had the chance to show that and didn't.
Posted by: Ryan Martin | April 25, 2010 10:38 AM
I find it interesting that former Arizona manager Bob Melvin was at the game last night with one of the Boston Globe reporters! One could be forgiven for putting 2+2 together and coming up with 5. Could Trembley's replacement be getting his homework in under the radar Pete? Melvin has an apartment in New York where his daughter goes to school so he spends a lot of time on the East Coast. Anything to start a rumor!
Posted by: Patrick | April 25, 2010 10:38 AM
So, so tired of this 100-pitch talk. These are grown men who get paid millions of dollars to throw a baseball. Yes, I know that is the reason for such a ridiculous measure. Because no one wants to be the coach who blows out the arm of a kid who will make the team millions of dollars. But cheese n' h. rice. Let him pitch. Let him throw 115 pitches. **GASP**
Mitch....the Baltimore Orioles owe the city of Baltimore a winning team. NOW. We have sat on our thumbs for over a decade, waiting. We get paid fractions of what they do, and we do our jobs better. That is the loser talk that has brought the O's to this point. "Just keep him safe in bubble wrap until next year. Because next year we'll be good." And that is how we prime all of our players to excel on winning teams. Because we all know that as soon as he can, Matusz is going to a winning team. As he should. So over/under 4 years for Matusz in pinstripes?
Posted by: Anonymous | April 25, 2010 10:42 AM
Yeah, Matusz was tired, time to come out. The HR looked like a pop up to me.
Trembley should have pinch run Guthrie for Wieters.

Bring out the BAGS.....
Professional sports teams at the highest level are ALWYS suppose to attempt to win NOW.
Does that mean the World Series? No. Does that mean the Post Season? It doesn't have to.
It means win more games than you lose. It means being competitive. It means playing meaningful games.
This organization has lied for so long that we just sit and take it. Then PA hires a GM who won 20 years ago, but has been one of the worst in baseball since ......and we all take the bait.
No longer...
AM is a fraud.
This team is incredibly bad.
Yes, they have a few decent players, with a few good prospects. Overall though, they are horrid.
You think Seattle would like to have Jones back? If they did, they wouldn't now have one of the best CF'ers in the AL.
Our two BEST prospects, Tillman and Bell, are having disastrous years thus far, but now people saying it's all about Arrieta. Good luck with that.
MASN's post game told us there were good signs yesterday because some of the bats came around.
NOTE TO MASN....
The LOST the F'ing game. That's ALL that matters.
Because I give them my money, it doesn't mean they're allowed to rip me and so many other loyal fans off. It doesn't give the the right to stick it up my axx every year. Yes, I take it, because I give them my money. I'm an idiot - guilty. Doesn't mean I can't be mad about it.
Yes, I'm a HATER. I hate that this organization shoves this shxt down the fans throat every single year.
I HATE that PA put a FRAUD in charge of this team.
I HATE that the warehouse has control of much of the media, thus we have to hear the never ending BS from non fans like Mark V on 1057thefan and pretty much everyone at MASN.
WE are witnessing another disaster in Baltimore everyone. Just because we seem to have a stud young pitcher and possibly a long term catcher, you think things are great. THEY'RE NOT!
We are watching Dog Shxt on the field each night.
The dude who posted above was right. You can't blame DT. Whoever he puts out there (Albers, Johnson, Gonzo) are terrible. These are the players AM GAVE HIM.
Why can't you see that?
AM is destroying this team to the point that they're unwatchable before the end of APRIL.... The end of APRIL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why isn't everyone embarrassed to be a Baltimore Oriole fan?
You may say you're not..... But how many of you will be at the Yard when the Yanks and Sox are in town?
Thought so....
I WILL be there and for the first time in my life, I will bring a Bag to the game. My friends are doing so as well. We feel it'll be a better statement than leaving the seats empty.
Start making up your BAGS people. Be creative and hopefully ESPN will show that the fans in Baltimore are in fact, prideful, as well as embarrassed.

I really believe there is some small reason for some optomism on the bull pen. Castillo looked good most of the time last year and last night, Uhara is throwing well andmay be back soon, berkman and hendrickson have shown some consistency johnson and ohman look to stay, now to sort out the rest and find some one from bowie or norfolk to try. Albers and mikolio look like they have regressed and need to go down.

Trembley will keep putting Albers into the games until his arm falls off. He's appeared in 10 games thus far, and if Trembley has his way Albers will appear in every game the rest of the season, or until he's so worn out that fans begin booing him and he gets demoted.
Posted by: James | April 25, 2010 12:08 PM
Well said wayne.....but Tillman is no longer a 2010 prospect. Matusz and Bell are listed as our top 2......but I agree with everything else.
Just for spite, I'm going to show up to a Sox and/or Yankee game. And I'm with you, wayne, I'm bringing a bag too. But it's going to be in the LF Upper Reserve and the food will be from the outside venders only. And I'm bringing my own beer in a Camelbak
I place no fault on Trembley. No manager in MLB past or present could win with this current team. He's been thrown under a bus and I feel sorry for him. You can say "bunt the ball more" or you complain that he didn't bring in Victim XYZ from the bullpen, it doesn't matter.
Either way, this is a failed season. The blame should be placed on the top brass. They didn't do what was needed to make this team competitive, plain and simple.
No matter who the manager is, whether it's DT, Davey Johnson, Joe Giardi, Sam Perlozzo or the ghost of John McGraw, this team is set for failure.
As for you headhunters, stfu. What better solution is there? Is it hard to figure where the problem lies? It's in front of your faces every night. But yet you think firing the manager is going change the fact that this team completely sucks. Just shut up. No manager makes all the right moves. I'm not a huge fan of DT either, but damn, I'm also not blind to the fact he has nothing to work with.
Whether this team is 2-15 or 5-11, they're still terrible. There's no denying it

This is for 'Embarrassed for you people':
Is name calling really necessary? Do you have an anger problem, that necessitates calling us bloggers names? I don't like the Oriole situation anymore than any of us bloggers, including you, but how about if you refrain from calling us 'stupid, ignorant or morons.' I'd venture to say that unless you are a professional ball player, you're guess and opinion is as good as ours. So let's keep the comments mature. And I wonder if you,me or any other rear seat bloggers would not cave under the pressure the manager or players are under. Yes, I do think, in my opinion, that getting rid of DT would be a big plus. The problems have been stewing for 2 years now, every since the big 30 run loss..(Not sure the exact number, but it was catastrophic.) There isn't very good discipline with these young guys especially Adam Jones and Julio Lugos. I am very concerned for Jones' attitude taking professional advice.
So tone it down a little.

Wayne , gil, i truly don't believe despite being 2&16 and being in total shambles nobody is blaming andy one bit. These fans are almost cult like, andy has put the entire town in a trace. This is totally unreal what has to happen before everybody wakes up. Please just tell me what has to happen Please tell me. They are the laughing stock of the entire league. They are unwatchable and the Ky derby hasn't even run yet. Wake up people please wake up.

Hey dave,
This is just a Blog and doesn't really mean much, but I do hope people show their dismay at the Yard in some fashion.
Only problem is, I don't believe AM cares at all about what the fans feel or think. I truly believe he's 'that smug'.
At least I get the feeling that DT hurts inside. Hurts when he puts in players that AM gives him, only to see them fail time and time again.
How do you think DT felt when he was left to bat Lugo in a key situation the other night? Or when he had to put Albes in last night? Or Johnson? Or Gonzo. Or even having to bat a rookie, in his first game as a major league, against Paps at the end of the game?
How do you think DT feels when he has to write Atkins in the line-up, or when he has no one to put in the 4 hole?
I mean it just goes on and on. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge DT fan. But the guy really has zero chance to succeed. Zero...
I love your idea of bringing your own food and beer.
Too bad it HAS to be like this.....

Peter,
Are the O's saying anything abouot Reimold. It is sad watching him try to compete when he is clearly not physically ready to play. If he isn't healthy enough to play they need to put him on the DL - If they think he is healthy, they need to either put him in the line-up and let him find his stride or more likely send him to Norfolk to play his way back into shape. Clearly this playing once every 3 days and pinch hitting in game on the line situations is not helping him nor the team. Yet AM and the team remain completely silent on the topic. Do you hear anything?????

Freaky quirky ball bounce?
Base running blunder?
Fundamental faux pax?
No clutch hitting?
Managerial boneheaded move?
Angry Baseball gods?
Or a combination of all this, seasoned with bad luck and snake bites just for good measure?

tomnit,
4 or 5 of your list fall on Trembley and I think the gods will be happy when is he is gone.

The season is lost anyway and the research is pretty clear that the risk of injury goes up in a big way when young pitchers throw too many pitches. Gotta protect the future star here.

If you bring a Camelbak they won't check it at the gates. My father sometimes pries off the lids of Mountain Dew bottles and pours beer into the empty bottle...... they can't tell the difference at the gates because beer and mountain dew are almost the same color lol
As far as AM, I believe that he really believes in what he's doing. What I can't believe is/was his refusal to get AT LEAST a clean up hitter this season. I know we've been through this, and I know I said I was skeptical, but now it's obvious. You're right. He failed this team and his manager. In fact, I had the feeling the whole time, I just didn't think it would be this bad.
I'll also say that I think he cares about the fans. But he's so bullheaded that he's his worst enemy. Or maybe closed minded and lack or perception would be better to describe him.
And Trembley, I can see it in his face. Like I said, I feel bad for the guy. He's going to get either fired mid season or non-tendered. I don't know which to hope for him. Firing him would be showing mercy

Responding to Pete's topic.......
I don't grasp the unwritten 100-pitch rule. If it's the first start of the season or the first couple starts coming off injury, that's understandable. But here are the two biggest excuses for pulling a pitcher at 100-pitches:
excuse #1 - It's early in the season and there's no need to stretch him out this early. or......
excuse #2 - Well, it's August and we want to be able to save his arm down the stretch.
So pretty much, there's only a 2 1/2 month window when a pitcher is allowed to throw more than 100 pitches. And normally it's if he's given up 2 runs or less, no matter how well he looks in the late innings.
I still think "closers" and the save stat is the most overrated thing is baseball

Dave,
I'm not debating the need for a clean-up hitter - at least for a couple of years unitl Weiters learns how to turn line drive singles into HR's, but which available clean-up hitter did Andy pass on that would have helped this team? Please don't say Matt Holliday because that was never going to happen. My point is it wouldn't have mattered and the real test is what does Angelos let him do when Gonzalez, Fielder and others become available in a year or 2.

I notice the Lou Montanez Fan Club has been awful quiet...Bitch about Pie and his 350 Avg, replace him with a guy with an OBP half of that. Too funny. I know, Lou looks like a ballplayer. Does it look like Lou cant hit major league pitching?
If the O's pitchers are trying to command the outer half of the strike zone, and are missing as badly as they were last night
(I can't imagine anyone dumb enough that they'd try to get a guy out pitching inside in Fenway Park unless they are throwing 95+ or have the last name Riviera), is it safe to assume that these guys pretty much have no clue where the ball is going when it leaves their hand?

WHERE IS WEITERS? IS HE INJURED?
Posted by: Jay Peterson | April 25, 2010 1:40 PM
It was the right time to relieve Matusz - he was tiring, and the tie run was on base. Unlike an earlier start, in which Matusz tired but was allowed to put the go-ahead run on base (which was allowed to score, naturally), Trembley pulled him at the right time.
That said, Trembley screwed up with his handling of the pen both nights. Friday night, he pulled Hendrickson, perhaps our best reliever after one pitch (sac bunt) for no good reason. Last night, he uses Albers, a waste of uniform space this season and last, instead of Hendrickson or Berken, because he won't deviate from set roles He does not do the primary job of a manager.- put his team in the best position to win games.

Jeff
I think if MacPhail had any balls, he would've included one of his precious prospects in deal for a solid clean up guy.
If he's that shrewd of a GM like everyone out there thinks he is, he would've made it work.
Or even if it wasn't a legit clean up hitter in the FA market, something along the lines of a power bat. I mean, come on. Tejada and Atkins being the highlight of the 2010 offseason? I know not much was out there, but that's pathetic.
Beltre just made 2 errors and the O's 3,4 & 5 hitters couldn't capitalize. There's 1 example

Jim66, well said. Of course I don't manage a major League team, but Baseball is Baseball, only the talent level changes. I have coached and managed in High School and College and still manage a 14 to 20 year old American Legion summer team. These are high school All Stars. I have always stressed the value of a good four seam fastball low and on the outside corner and I insist that my players gain command of that pitch.
I want them to throw it 75% of the time.
I was amazed last night that both Mickoilio and Albers were pitching up and in in those situations. If they were trying to go low and away and ended up going up and in, they don't belong in the Major Leagues. If Trembley didn't call for pitches low and on the outside corner he doesn't belong in the major leagues.

I purchased a 13-game plan back in January because I felt this team had a chance to progress.
They really need to make a move with Trembley. But only do so if you intend on hiring a manager with actual major league managing experience.
And I think MacFail needs to address the fans and enact some type of plan to move this team forward. It's obvious the farm system only solution isn't working. They are going to have to trade a prospect or two for a viable power hitter.
Posted by: Charles | April 25, 2010 2:19 PM
as if this team needed any other crap, just another bull---- call by an umpire feeling the need to get in the middle of a simple call and getting it all wrong.
Whe you're going bad, and not the greatest team to begin with, and on the road, you get no calls.
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: I agree with the sentiment, but could you clean up the verbiage just a touch?
Posted by: jim66 | April 25, 2010 2:31 PM
But but but but the national media said this was a promising team. They can't be wrong!!
Can they ?
But,I read it in Sports Illustrated
Trembley isn't the one to blame, but he's gotta go anyway, just to put the heat where it rightfully belongs. Andy MacCheap&Delusional
Just be careful what you wish for, Angelos likes to go CHEAP on managers too.
Look for a no-name mgr who has never managed in the majors before.
Substandard talent, inexperienced managers, and an obsolete GM and ppl still wonder why the team never wins

jim66, Gil,
Couldn't say it better. Low and away is like Fundamental. Especially coming in with men on. Basic fundamental.
and jim, of course Lou isn't Pie...he's Lou!!! I don't think I've ever accused the guy of super-duperness, but I'm a believer. For no particularly good reason...

Texas stole 9 times last time they faced wakefield
Why arent the Orioles stealing ?
Posted by: Well ????? | April 25, 2010 2:45 PM
what a gutsy performance today so far by Hernandez. He is without curveball, and is moving the fastball around enough to be effective. Pitch count a little high. He's 24, and he'll learn efficiency as he goes.
But he looks like a totally different pitcher than last year.

Hi Peter----good points, agree 100%.
By the way, someone needs to teach our fleas---Izzie, Andino, and Lugo how to BUNT.

What happened to Kenny?
Posted by: South Park | April 25, 2010 3:00 PM
Man on 3rd, 1 out with our #4 and 5 hitters up
Can't score
Posted by: The offense will be fine | April 25, 2010 3:00 PM
Guy on 3rd and we don't score with the bottom of their lineup coming up... I fully expect that non-run to bite us right now.
Posted by: Chris in Hawaii | April 25, 2010 3:03 PM
Kenny got banished from the blog for suggesting that the Orioles bunt in the first inning with no outs and the #3 hitter on deck and the clean up hitter in the hole

It's time to shake things up. If that means firing Trembley, than do it. I've been supportive, mostly blaming Crowley for the team's lack of hitting, but something needs to be done. How long do you let a manager allow his staff to flounder until the manager is fired in the real world?
Posted by: San Diego | April 25, 2010 3:39 PM
Runners on base for 6 of 7 inn and only 1 SB attempt???
Old and decrepit Valddy stole 3 last time Tx faced Wakefield and VMart

ugly-ugly-ugly how can this team tolerate the relievers they have . Do anything. Bring someone up from the rookie league. Don"t allow the fans to suffer this way. Get rid of the entire bunch even if you have to pay them. No one should have to tollerate this.

Pete, sorry about that,I'll clean up the verbiage. Those are the type of no-brain calls the umps need to stay out of. It was not even close, and as I watched it about 5 times, I couldn't figure out what the ump saw. Same as the Atkins bunt the other night. Even Jerry Remy on the NESN broadcasts said the ump blew those two.
On a side note, I think John Lackey is the second coming of Maddux-Glavine. Throw enough pitches anywhere close on the outside and it's a strike. After a while, NESN didn't even put up the strike-zone frame. Maybe out of embarrassment. There were a few pitches to Jones and they were not even close. Adam ended up aggravated and took himself out of the AB.
