Maybe it's just me but...
...it would seem that when your lineup is in an unprecedented funk and you're down by a run and you get a leadoff double -- as the O's did on more than one occasion tonight -- you might try to do something to move that guy over and put the tying run at third with one out.
Instead, they might as well have erected a statue at second base. That's on both the hitters and on Dave Trembley. If you're waiting around for a big inning to produce itself at this point, you've either quit or you haven't been paying attention.
David Hernandez deserved a chance to win tonight and nobody was willing to give up an at-bat for him. That's a damned shame.
Mariners 3, Orioles 1.

Dave should have called for the bunt. He should also fine Lugo for jogging down to first base. Why was Luke Scott still in leftfield late in the game. That fly ball should have been caught cost a run

A lot of these games are being lost by the team not being able to execute simple things. To me, that's mostly on Trembley. If they can't do it, it's because they weren't prepared. If they weren't prepared, that's on Trembley. If they won't do it, it's because he called for it and they don't respect him. If they don't respect him, then that's on Trembley.
Managing is not crossing your fingers and hoping things go the other way. Managing is making things happen and Trembley ain't doing it.
And cut Lugo. Don't just fine him. Cut him. Send a message.

It's not just you, but it probably should be. This is not a team that should be giving away outs right now.
Posted by: Steve D. | April 21, 2010 12:40 AM
Chris in Hawaii,
I disagree. It's not Trembley's fault that the team doesn't do the simple things. Guys at the level should know how to play the game right. It's not Trebmley's job to tech them execution. Also, I can't blame Trembley for lack of talent on this team.
I blame Trembley for the fact that he cannot figure out how to win games. That's what he gets paid to do. Baseball is a game of strategy, and Trembley lacks the strategic vision.

Batting Izzy and lugo next to each other in the lineup….Brilliant! Tremblay is the best manager ever for a rebuilding team. Lets sign him for a seven year contract.. we can collect the 1-5 pick in the draft each year…
Posted by: Anonymous | April 21, 2010 12:49 AM
They should be doing whatever it takes to score runs. The players need to put the team first and not their .225 batting avg's. Even Markakis should have bunted......
On the other hand, we would have just left the runners stranded at 3rd instead of 2nd.....
Time for coaching change before it gets "too late".
Posted by: jongermany | April 21, 2010 12:50 AM
Mesotheliangelos,
Yeah, I forgot to add the option where he's just not calling for the things that need to be done. If he's not calling to move the runner over from second with no outs in a one run game, well, then guess who's to blame on that one?
So I agree with you that Trembley lacks the strategic vision.

Lets go shopping in the minors and swap a few hungry players for lackadaisical ones:
My list: Adam Jones for Xavier Avery (lets see if he can play or not, I don't care about his age: Heyward can play in Atlanta). Maybe this would wake Adam Jones up a little bit. Another solution is that maybe he should be playing in LF as opposed to CF.
Next: Rhyne Hughes for Luke Scott (HIS BAT IS PATHETIC, Nothing personal on him just his hitting approach).
Let Justin Turner play 2B, See you later Julio Lugo!!!
And Someone and anyone please rip into Nick and tell him to play ball.

i've got a highlander that can fit about 7 guys in it. i'm willing to donate it to the o's if they'll promise to put lugo, jones, markakis, crowley, trembley, roberts and gonzalez in it to take a looooong drive out of town for the next 5 months.

Andy MacPhail and the weather people are the only ones I know that can be wrong 90% of the time and still have a job.

Lets take this one step further and drive it off a cliff
Nothing personal.. We just need Andy to make trades and get talent on the field

Was Trembley shitfaced tonight during the game?

Not true. The crow and Kranny also have that job security
Posted by: Dick | April 21, 2010 1:10 AM
We've gone from absurd to ridiculous.
Adam Jones is just mailing it in now, and I don't mean to pick on Adam -- he's not alone. I wish this team had some leadership to refocus some of these guys.
The Orioles have to play .420 ball from here on out to avoid a 100 loss season. Frankly, I would love to see them play crummy .400 ball right now. I'm not sure they can play consistent .400 ball and avoid that unpleasant mark. I hope so.
For those of us (including me) who hoped they may be able to win 74 games, the Orioles would have to play .500 ball from here on out to reach that mark.
Not many thought they could realistically play .500 ball for the entire season, so it's entirely unlikely they can do it for the entire season minus a couple weeks.
Thankfully there is one well-run team in this town.

Primary responsibility falls on the listless selfish players. Still, it was very disappointing during his post-game interview when he said he didnt notice anyone not running balls out. He needs to call someone out and Lugo is a prime candidate after this game. Also, these guys are clearly too selfish or inept to move the runner over so Trembley should start giving the bunt sign in those situations.
Posted by: Mike H. | April 21, 2010 1:14 AM
Trembley was watching his new Avatar DVD during the game and let Luke Scott handle the decisions on the field.
Posted by: BAGHEAD | April 21, 2010 1:17 AM
Dick,
I hear you, but MacPhail is the guy who brought Scott, Lugo, Jones, Atkins, Gonzales and others to Baltimore. Crowley would look like a genius if he was hitting coach for the Yankees. I would argue that considering the pitching is not the problem right now, Kranitz has done a somewhat good job. Also considering he doesn't have a whole lot of good pitchers to work with.
Posted by: Mesotheliangelos | April 21, 2010 1:18 AM
Trembley will be fired tommorrow or before the Red Sox series. No chance they let him lead the team in Boston.
Posted by: Jason | April 21, 2010 1:23 AM
OMG, did Schmuck actually criticise Trembley!?!? Pete, did you suddenly feel a dropping sensation between your legs beforehand because that would explain this post.
Posted by: JAS | April 21, 2010 1:27 AM
I know the Orioles quit after Seattle got to 3 runs but why did Trembley take Ohman out and put in Ponson Jr? That was a white flag kind of move but again they quit long before so its moot lol

Trembley didnt have time to manage tonight because he was busy updating his resume and searching for work on his blackberry

This is what we've been talking about since early in ST Schmuckster! Could you not see the glaring difference between the Rays, for instance, and the Orioles in every department of on and off field behavior? It was clearly obvious to many of novices down there taking a gander at this "phase" of the rebuilding. Adam Jones drove a flashy red sports car in Sarasota. Which tells me he's young, dumb and not getting very good advice. Can't you see Pete, it's pervasive, like a virus. This team is cursed. I say, blow it up! Indoctrinate it now with new blood, but certainly from the top down first. These baby birds are being led astray. Straight to slaughter. Time for heads to roll, as if they were shot from a grassy knoll. No warning. Boom, here's your walking papers. Put an end to these mystery capers. When will Luke Scott learn go hit lefties? Ans: Never. Bah bye, c ya, don't let screen door hit ya. Not just one, or two must go, startingg w Lugo, but half this sorry lot should get shot, out of a cannon, punched even, by Jim Mcmannon, and then banned like Roids, from leading us on. Has anyone ever seen a team look so lifeless, so content w medocrity? So acquiessent? And Angelos cries of an uneven playing field yet ok's the signings of inferior talent in an effort to fulfill the charade of "competitiveness" only long enough to hinter up to the trickle down trough of shared revenues of the Yanks & Sawx. If Gonzalez shud be sued for Grand Larceny, then surely this owner warrants some form of punishment for all these wasted years. I know. Make him sit and watch every stinking inning these turds play, in this, the new Oriole way.

Do it, do it, and do it now before the Yankees come to town. Fire Dave Trembley and put him out of his misery!

Thank you Peter. It's about time the media showed some leadership by calling the birds and Trembley out. This is the pattern since Trembley took over. Too many men are left in scoring position. Too many times is there a man on third with one out who is left stranded. Life long O's fan. This is depressing. Only positive thing in this town is the Ravens

Adam Jones continues to blow tiny bubbles chasing down batted balls. That's his signature and he probably has a mantlepiece full of his bobbleheads in his $500,000 condo.
Where have you gone, Mr. Frank Robinson? I know a punk kid that needs you to kick him in the ass.
Posted by: Don Ho | April 21, 2010 7:50 AM
It's not just you Pete. Many people here have been complaining about the O's inability to advance runners since last season or longer. What's irritating is that the clubs who do have some power in the lineup, like the Rays and Yankees, all bunt and steal more than the O's do. I know Earl was a big believer in the 3 run homer and didn't like to sacrifice, but he actually had more than one player on his team who could hit. I've been saying since last year that this team, with its conspicuous lack of power, needs to get much better at small ball, but under DT nothing ever changes.

Thank you for exposing this Peter a little better: Like I said yesterday twice - THIS IS ON THE PLAYERS.
It's too bad, Trembley seems a good guy and a good, knowledgeable baseball guy, but these guys ain't playing for him. This roster needs their collective a$$ kicked, and Trembley can't do it.
THIS IS ON THE PLAYERS!

MacPhail put together this disgraceful group.Put him on the next flight out of town. What's his rebuilding timetable now?10 years.?What a 'genius'.
Posted by: Paul | April 21, 2010 8:44 AM
So finally after two years plus of this incompetent manager you found something to criticize him on?
Just the other day you and the rest of the Sun people were defending Trembley. The man will not or cannot help his team win but can certainly help them lose.
We might be 10 games out of first on April 21st. Ten games but if this guy is still in the clubhouse when we play the Red Sox I'll be thoroughly disgusted with MacPhail.
Posted by: Mick | April 21, 2010 8:55 AM
Good post Pete. Don't give these BUMS a free pass anymore.
Posted by: Groundskeeper | April 21, 2010 8:57 AM
The players will never be inspired to reach their potential under a manager like DT, which is a big problem. And Crowley can't seem to teach right-handed batters how to hit lefties, because he didn't bat right-handed. Justin Turner, who can hit better than Lugo, should be playing EVERY game at 2nd while Roberts is out.
Posted by: norman | April 21, 2010 9:51 AM
What bugs me the most is the O's think they are the 27 Yanks, no hit n run, no bunt, no move the runner, why after a guy walks on 4 pitches does the next batter swing at the first pitch, no one works the count to make the pitcher work, baserunning is a joke, coaches let runners get picked off, when you are down by 3 in the ninth and every batter swings for the fence is a joke, again trying to hide injuries w/Roberts should have been on the DL in spring training he was not ready to play , you cant be game ready with 5 at bats all spring..bring back Davy Johnson let PA kiss up and let Davy who has worked with young guys handle the job, if a guy screws up pull him they do that in football, there is no I in team.....G
Posted by: George Williams | April 21, 2010 10:04 AM
Just let Trembley go and hire Cal as manager. How can a team keep losing the same way over an over again without any improvement. Its so annoying. Whats up with Adam Jones by the way, hes been playing so pathetically, two right down the middle fastballs strikes and then he swing at a nasty breaking ball.
Posted by: will | April 21, 2010 10:08 AM
Thank you for this post. I was saying the same thing last night. Its frustrating when the offense has been so dormant all season yet our manager does not do try and manufacture runs.
Also, I agree with your other blog about lack of fire on the team. Any other manager would have been all of the first base umpire when Izturis was obviously safe on the barehanded play that Lugo made in the 2nd inning. This team almost looked like it lost interest in playing after the 5th inning, maybe we need to see someone get thrown out just to show that they care.
Posted by: justdubbs | April 21, 2010 12:12 PM
HEY MR. SCHMUCK......
I've been saying that for a year now.... Trembley doesn't play good fundamental baseball.
This happens all the damned time...
Leadoff guys get on and he fails to try to move them up.
That's why I keep saying:
MIKE BORDICK manager
CAL RIPKEN bench coach
MIKE FLANAGAN pitching coach
B.J. SURHOFF batting coach
JEFF CONINE first base coach
EDDIE MURRAY third base coach
SCOTT McGREGOR bullpen coach
Posted by: Bear the Birdfan | April 21, 2010 1:24 PM
Normally I don't put much stock in what the fans think (including here). But this time they're right - the O's need somebody to light a fire under them and kick some ass. Enough with the patience. It's time to blow up at the players - and to make some significant changes in the roster. How much worse could they be?
