Gonzalez hurt? Really? (updated)
Reliever Michael Gonzalez told manager Dave Trembley he was not available to pitch last night because he couldn't get loose. Trembley said that he went to the training room today to check on his new closer and found him getting treatment on his shoulder.
This appears to be another strange chapter in the Michael Gonzalez saga, and it is particularly interesting to me because I was the first one ot ask him during the early days of spring training if he was having a problem getting comfortable on the mound. He mildly rebuked me for my inquiry, since I had not spent enough time watching him pitch to determine whether he looked comfortable or not. It was a fair point at the time.
He insisted his arm was fine and continued to insist that right up until Tuesday night. He did struggle with some lower back soreness about midway through training camp, but that apparently is no longer an issue.
What followed were weeks of wondering why his velocity was not up to his normal standards and why he did so much of his pitching against minor league competition instead of in exhibition games.
Of course, there were also the scouts who passed through Sarasota and wondered about him, some of whom seemed convinced that he was pitching hurt.
Everybody knows what has happened since. He has made three appearances and has been ineffective in all of them, though he managed to get a save in the final game of the season-opening road series against the Rays.
He was up in the bullpen last night and Trembley said there were several junctures in the game when he might have used him if Gonzalez had not declined to pitch.
"He didn't feel comfortable getting loose last night,'' Trembley said.
Gonzalez apparently is being checked out by Orioles orthopedist Dr. Andrew Cosgarea about now. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if he ended up on the disabled list and the Orioles called up Kam Mickolio or Alberto Castillo by the end of the day.
Instant update: And I'm not surprised that the Orioles just announced that Gonzalez has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained shoulder.

Pete -
He has to be hurt. I questioned this as well (along with many others) after his second outing. He has never pitched this poorly in his career, and his saying he's anxious, tight, needing to get comfortable, are all excuses.
Shouldn't a manager or coach or GM call him out and force him to seek a medical opinion? If they find nothing wrong with his arm, fine then. But he has to be injured and he's just not saying anything. What other rational explanation is tehre for his results and now this?

Sorry...didn't read you're last paragraph. I was a bit anxious, tight, not feeling comfortable...... Hopefully they bring up Mickolio.

Pete,
If he is, the only person{including thousands of Oriole fans}that didn't suspect it was Trembley. Was Dave a lookout at Pearl Harbor?
Posted by: Gil | April 14, 2010 12:06 PM
That's total BS. Earl Weaver would have told him to suit the f***k up and get ready when the number is called
Posted by: Anonymous | April 14, 2010 12:11 PM
Adam Jones CF
Ty Wigginton 2B
Nick Markakis RF
Miguel Tejada 3B
Nolan Reimold LF
Luke Scott DH
Garrett Atkins 1B
Craig Tatum C
Cesar Izturis SS
Brad Bergesen RHP
WHAT THE #UCK IS THIS?!?!
Trembley cant get players to play, Macfail cant get money from the owner to get players and the owner is the worst in sport.
The positive... This year might be so bad Angelos may just sell the team.

Pete,
Why is Wieters out of the lineup today?
Posted by: Anonymous | April 14, 2010 12:30 PM
WOW!
This is the swing at anything lineup!
Wiggy Jones and Miggy alone will keep Price's pitchcount down maybe he can pitch a complete game today..
Posted by: Ron | April 14, 2010 12:33 PM
Would Trembley even know who his players are if they didn't have their names on the backs of their uniforms?
He seems to have no rapport with them. Problems, whether concerns about injuries or players' bad on-the-field habits, seem to be beyond his comprehension or sense of control. Whatever happened to the New Dave?

If this lineup wins today I'm going to invest all of my money in Enron stock because we are clearly in bizarro world.

The only thing I take issue with is your usage of the "Really?" shtick. It's gotten old fast.
Gonzalez will be one of those disastrous signings. What can you do? If anything, perhaps it'll be for the best with Mickolio in the wings.

I remember the attendance slogan from 1974. I put the bumper sticker on my dad's 66 Biscayne. It read, "A Million or More in '74! I believe this year's slogan to be "Decreasing Again in 2010! Sell Peter Sell!!

Pete... I think he's hurt. I think we all know he's hurt, really.
My question - is there any action a team can take if a player is hiding an injury? I know its a tricky situation and hard to prove, but it seems fair to me.
You're hired to do a (very) specific job. There are rules and allowances in place that allow you to get healthy if you cannot do that job. But to intentionally conceal or avoid treatment for an injury? That seems absurd and professionally unethical.

Pete,
Tim Kurkjian made an omnious comment on Baseball Tonight Monday. He said a scout told him Gonzalez looked like he had "Steve Blass Disease". Now while I agree his mechanics look like a disaster (but who am I?), how is Gonzalez presence in the clubhouse. Does he seems rattled and down?

How bout put Gonzo on DL and send down/release Albers. Then call up Mickollio and anyone who has a chance to miss some bats once in a while.

Thsi lineup is weak - we need more pop in it. Why not have Turner at 2B, Miggy at SS, and Wiggy at 3B?
Would prefer to see:
Pie LF
Tejada SS
Markakis RF
Scott DH
Wieter C
Atkins 1B
Wigginton 3B
Jones CF
Turner 2B
Pie's seeing the ball well now (even Lefty-Lefty), and we could use his speed in the absence of Roberts. Would also like to see Turner in there - brings a spark plug mentality. Izturis/Lugo, to me, are the same player, and while Izturis is a better fielder, tehy can't hit anything but a single 1 every 4 AB, so put Miggy back at SS. Not like he'll forget how to play 3B...
Posted by: PeteyPablo | April 14, 2010 12:59 PM
Hadn't thought of it that way, Dick. Greedy Petey gets taken!
I feel much better now. Thank you.

I dont understand why we keep playing Izzy at SS when we got Miggy.
Posted by: Don | April 14, 2010 1:03 PM
As I posted on Roch's blog, Gonzalez coming down with an injury was forseen. WHen Andy spends this much money and it flops, he has to protect his butt by coming up with a rogue injury.
DT only can put the pieces on the field which Andy gives him. Andy can only give DT the pieces Ole Pete gives him permission too. Not too hard to do the math on where the problem is.

Don -
I know, especially when we could use Wigginton at third, and then see what Turner can do.
Is anyone going to object to having Wigginton versus Izturis in the lineup? Are we that set on having Izzy at SS for his fielding?

Petey Pablo:
I don't get why you think (and others I've noticed) Turner is such an upgrade on a guy like Izturis/Lugo. Because he had some hits in spring training? Please.
And if Reimold is not going to start against a lefty, then he shouldn't even be on the team.
Plus, catchers almost always get day games off after night games.
These are all basic managerial moves.

If only Steve Blass Disease (which started in '73) had struck its namesake 18 months earlier than it did ('71 WS)!
This 46 year old certainly remembers the '74 bumper sticker Mike mentioned. One thing about our attendance history: those who say "you never had Yankee and Red Sox fans take over the ballpark in the old days" don't have the greatest of memories. Even in the best of times - particularly before the 1979 attendance boom - there were significantly higher numbers of visiting-team fans for those two than the other clubs. It may not have been the 70-80% like it seems today (probably about 30-40%) and they didn't have as many chances to cheer since the O's usually won, but a bunch of them were always there. And the less than 50% of the time the O's lost, their cheering could take over the place back then as well, like today.

What is this, the pitching equivalent of Glenn Davis?
Anytime Atlanta lets a pitcher walk be wary. Be extremely wary!
Looks like EVERYONE in this pathetic organization was asleep at the wheel on this one.
Hopefully. this gets the annual "pitching joke of the year" out of the way early. Or is this just the beginning??????
Posted by: Gus Smegma | April 14, 2010 1:14 PM
Hey Pete, I know Angelos has nixed contracts before because of phantom injuries to pitchers. So I have to assume the O's examined Gonzalez prior to the deal. Is this correct? When would have gotten hurt? He seemed to arrive injured and never threw properly.
Posted by: Mikepcfl | April 14, 2010 1:16 PM
Kenny,
Lugo and Izzy suck. Miggy needs to be playing SS

Why would you suggest a guy that everyone thought had no range anymore a couple of years ago should be playing shortstop for us again? And who would you suggest play third? Wiggy? So you want to upgrade offensively and downgrade defensively? It's one of the few good points so far how well the team has played defensively. Meanwhile, forget about it, it ain't gonna happen anyway. They're not going to all of a sudden move Tejada back to short and dump Izzy. Stop bringing up points that won't happen.

Read between the lines. With games each day there is no time to work on mechanics with Gonzalez. And, putting him in earlier in games just digs a deeper hole for Trembley and McPhail. They've got to find a way to send him on a rehab assignment and due to union rules I think that can only be done after a trip to the DL. The O's are building a case for DL. I'll say it again. What were Trembley and Kranitz smoking during Spring training when this could have been addressed.

Kenny - GREAT post. Unfortunately, most of us know this, but some people just want to throw around stuff to bad mouth Trembley. He's doing a fine enough job messing up as it is.
Peter - you asked Gonzales a question based on your experience. It's not a "fair" point for Gonzalez to "challenge" you. He should give you an honest answer and if proves you wrong, so be it. ANother example of a player trying to bully a writer.

Kenny -
Wake up. This team stinks right now and is need of a kick in the pants. And you just want to continue with 'basic managerial moves'?
I'd be fine if they demoted Reimold - he's probably still recovering from his injury. So get better at AAA, and recall Lou. And if we are going to use Wigginton and Lugo at 2nd base, why even call up Turner? Why not call up someone like Aubrey or even Hughes?
We need some spark, some energy right now. I don't see Izturis doing that - I could see a Turner, fighting to prove his worth in the big leagues, doing that.
This team is lifeless and I don;t understand you and others who want to stick with the status quo approach.
I hope I'm wrong and Izturis and Tatum go 3-8 today with 3 runs and 2 rbi.
Posted by: PeteyPablo | April 14, 2010 1:46 PM
Petey:
You're misunderstanding me. My point is that when things are going bad, there's no reason to make them worse. Fans always cry to dump this guy and bing this guy up and so on and so forth, but that's usually not the answer. Reimold is a guy that SHOULD be playing every day according to your logic, not being demoted for a guy like Sweet Lou (who I like) who has fewer talents and tools than Reimold. And Tatum deserves a chance to play as well, and if that's ever going to happen, it's going to be in a day game following a night game, particularly when they're playing again tomorrow. Just think these things through, PeteyPablo, they're really not going to make the changes you are suggesting, no MLB team would.

How about that! Miggy just made an error at third. I didn't see it, but I'll go out on a limb and say Wigginton would have a better chance making that play, considering he's only played 3B over 500 games in his career....
But instead, we have a SS playing 3B, a 3B playing 2nd, and a true 2nd baseman sitting on the bench.
Smartly played!

the orioles ought to send mat albers back to the monors too. he does not send me. no doubt about it it,it is not fair to the team to not tell them that a player is playing hurt

Kenny -
I completely understand you. You prefer to stick with the basic managerial moves to lighting a fire under these guys. Your philosophy is that this will work itself out, and to stay the course. I just happen to disagree with you.
I would prefer to see some changes in the lineup that make sense. I'm not sure why you think other MLB teams would not consider Tejada at SS, Wigginton at 3B, and Turner at 2B - all their most natural positions based on their career plating time. As for Tatum giving Wieters a day of rest, I understand, but the timing isn't all that good. We need Wieters' bat...couldn't we have waited until Sunday for the switch?
If Turner's not going to play, keep him in Norfolk Bring up a bat. Reimold should play, IF he's healthy which it seems he is not. So let him recover at his own pace in Norfolk.
Just consider something other than the the basics, Kenny, consider some changes, that may seem radical to you, but really are not once you analyze it a bit.

Between the one month gap from the time Brian was hurt till he told the O's FO to Gonzo not being truthful about his arm, this has been a whole new level of what else can happen?
I agree with PeteyPablo, put Miggy at SS because the team needs all the offense it can get plus you then have the option of Atkins or Wiggy at 3B or 1B so you at least have some pop plus you can cut Lugo and give his AB's to Turner.
My biggest fear was that DT was going to be fired quickly once the season began and the next guy would be stuck with coaches he doesn't know or doesn't want and that's what's going to happen, but I have this bad feeling that Datz will be the new skipper.

When Gonzo was with the Braves he was fine, if he is injured it had to have happened during the winter at home...playing sandlot. My concerns are not with the team persay, but when is the City going to awaken to the fact that Peter Angelos doesn't want a winner because it is too costly.
