A cartoonish Peter Schmuck

schmuck-cartoon.jpg

When I heard that one of the great sports cartoonists of our time – Mike Ricigliano – had been asked to do a caricature of me for my blog and other promotional purposes, my head swelled up even more than usual.

I hope this doesn’t sound egotistical, but I think Mike captured the essence of Schmuck – from the huge noggin to the embarrassing wardrobe to the love of any endeavor that requires a ball, a bat, a puck or a menu.

You’ll be seeing Mike’s artwork here on the blog, in some advertisements for The Sun and on a series of wacky T-shirts that will be available soon. Let me know what you think.

Shouldn't you be saving that turtle instead of running him over?

I agree it is you!! Hope Balt Sun realizes that between you, Jeff Z, and all the other excellent sports writers on the staff it would not be such an excellent newspaper.

I agree with Chuck - kinda looks like you're about to step on Testudo. Could also question the B-ball but don't want to be indelicate

First off it shows you running, highly unlikely and you also look rather svelte, how much did that cost you?

He was a little generous in the mid-section....

Excellent!!

It's not very realistic. There's only one hot dog.

I spotted one inaccuracy already. That hot dog would be half-eaten by now. So would the turtle.

Hey Pete,

Being a sports writer is job many of us dream of. Is it as cool as we imagine (and as it is depicted in the cartoon)? We know you can't disrespect your profession or employer publicly, and you wouldn't boast about what a great job you have, but maybe you could say what like best and least about covering sports for a major newspaper. What would you do if you weren't a sports writer? What path did you take to get where you are? Would you do it again?

Pete,

My son and I are planning to reveal our inner Schmuck by wearing the tshirts at the April 10 O's game. Look for us in the first row behind Toronto's dugout.

Cheers,
Tim

Nice touch filling your shirt up with all those Baltimore Sun bursts.

Any chance that Ricig can work in a wild-eyed thoroughbred?

One hot dog? Really??? Just one?????

I think Mike got this one wrong - I've always pictured you as running toward the food court and walking back....

LOL!

Pete -- do you know if Mike Ricigliano will be doing the cartoon-per-game for the coming O's season?

I loved that last year.

Pete, you may have hit upon a great idea for your own line of men's fragrances: "Essence of Schmuck ". At a store near us? Soon? BG

good one Bill...."Essence of Schmuck"....a fragrance of esskay hot dogs, mountain dew, piney car freshener and a splash of aqua velva. Sold at a discount store near you......

Great cartoon Pete,

That bird though.... it's flying waaaaay too high.....

Aren't you supposed to be holding a can of Diet Dr. Pepper?

Looks great, Pete!

LOVE it! But where's the Diet Dr.Pepper??

Glad there was a Hockey puck in there.

Don't want to go ACLU on you!

............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Can't believe you would misrepresent me as an anti-hockey guy. Don't your remember the concussion I got at the Caps fantasy media day. And I'm going to the Lightning/Rangers game tonight in Tampa. So there.

Why is there no picture of a raven? C'mon Mike, a football just doesn't get it!

Jealous, Pete. Hockey is the only sport I haven't seen live...Last game I went to was Miami at UNC in college basketball. It was UNC's 2000th basketball win. Too bad 1000 of the wins have come against the Terps...GO TERPS!!!

Congrats on the charicature by Ricig....he is one of the best and I am very happy to hear that he will be contributing to the blog. Meanwhile, leave it to Wayne to lay his negativity on it. My hero....NOT.

That picture is hot fire!

I want a shirt.

Pete...

Just making sure...

Someone needs to stick up for hockey around here!

ROCK THE RED! GO CAPS!

Is that you or Jim Hunter...HAHA. Great I can't wait to buy one, have them made into Hawaiian shirts!

Now you can reveal your inner Schmuck by wearing a "Big Schmuck Fan" or "got Schmuck?" t-shirt with Pete's caricature drawn by Ricig. Visit www.gotSchmuck.com to order!

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
