Terps: What a heartbreaker

Yes, I was in Clearwater earlier today to do some pregame stuff on the Orioles, but when that driving rain started to fall and the outlook seemed bleak for getting the game against the Phillies started, I bolted and returned to Sarasota to watch the Terps play Michigan State in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Of course, the rain ended and my colleague Dan Connolly was left holding the bag at Bright House Field. I'm so ashamed.

Not sure I made the right decision. It was a terrific game and it was a heartstopping finish, but it's going to take Gary Williams and the Terps awhile to get over that 3-point buzzer beater. They had staged one of the great NCAA tournament comebacks to take the lead twice in the final minute, and I've got to think a victory would have taken them at least into the Elite Eight.

No disrespect to Northern Iowa, but they probably had their moment in the Madness. I doubt Michigan State will have much trouble with them.

The Spartans fired the three with abandon all day and made so many of them that the game really shouldn't have been close at the end. The ball bounced their way at several critical moments, but that's part of the game. My favorite frustrating moment was late in the second half when the Terps forced a five-second inbound turnover and then disrupted the inbound on Michigan State's next inbound under the basket, only to see their deficit rise five points in the process.

Their comeback, however, was heartstopping and Grevies Vasquez went out with a terrific closing flourish, not that he feels too great about it right now.

The better team won. Other than a lucky win over Duke, Maryland lost to every other single team in the tourney field. They even lost at home to William & Mary. *L* And those hideous uniforms have to go down in history with the all orange Orioles uniforms as the absolute ugliest in the history of sports.

uhh..

They split vs GT, Clemson, Duke and swept FSU.

Only other teams they played in the field were Wisconsin and Nova.

By that count, they are 5-5 vs the field. Get your act together!

strike that... 5-6. Left out Wake.

MD beat FSU twice, Clemson and GT, and beat VT, the first team out of the field. You're right, the Duke game was the anomaly; the one they lost. Their only loss by more than 12 and the only time they were soundly beaten in the final 3 months of the season.

Doesn't matter what they did during the season. They lost today so the season is over. Lack of rebounding, poor shooting, turnovers, poor defense on the 3-point shooting, and they didn't wake up til late in the second half. All that cost them the game.

They showed that they had terrific heart, but Mich st played without there 2 starting guards most of the game. They were totally out rebounded and mich st got most of the loose balls. Md didn't play with any intensity until the last 5 minutes of the game. With that said Gary didn't let them quit and they did give us some great moments this year. Great year and good luck to the 3 seniors.

Now that the disappointment is beginning to fade, an objective look at the season will show that the Terps had a year that exceeded all expectations. They played with tremendous courage and won some very exciting games - the best year that the team has had since the 2002 National Championshipship year.

Michigan State may had had their starting guards out, but look how the repllacements played! The injuries may have worked to their advantage. Greivis and company staged a comeback that was incredible and they deserve tremendous credit.

Gonna miss all three seniors and thanks to them for a memorable year that was a long time coming.

Cue Wayne and Gil blaming the loss on Macphail in 3...2....

Would love to know how the win over puke was lucky?

Credit to the MSU kids. Most would've folded once MD took the lead.

At least we have the Orio...ah crap.

I'll blame macphail for not signing Tex.

Today, the twins gave Mauer Tex type money. If the small market Twins can afford to pay that kind of contract, why can't one of baseball's richest teams do the same ?

Cue shamrock defending the move in 3.2.1

Only 6 months til football season

I am sick and tired of the constant beating on the O's. It's old news. I get it, it's been 13 years since they were relevant. But in that same time frame your beloved Ravens have brought ONE title. I know you will defend it by saying playoffs, but let's compare apples to apples. I see it Ravens up 1-0. The O'd have by far their most exciting, young, talented team that they have had in years can we at least let the season play out before you all jump ship. I'll still be sitting there in the lower reserve rooting for them as they make leaps and bounds and ultimately WILL contend sooner then later.

Going to miss these three seniors - despite Mosely and Williams., next year will be a long one with Bowie and Tucker in the backcourt ....

geeeesh....sorry wrong forum for my rant....all apologies!!

Edgemere J is smoking that good stuff

Joey,

The O's will start spending once they get that new regional sports network from MLB

Oh wait........ Um........Nevermind

To C'ya: go troll on some other board. What a loser you must be go troll on this site.

Anyway, the Terps should be proud of their run. They played a team that is very well coached and pulled out an amazing win. Gary again got more out of his kids than most coaches and we got to see a star born in Vasquez.

I have come to the conclusion that we as Orioles fans have every reason to remain skeptical until we put it all together and start winning ala Tampa. Otherwise, it's all a bunch of talk! Remember when we had Loewen, Cabrera, Penn and company, and THEY were supposed to help us become a winner again? And before them, we had hopes for many pitchers including Ponson, Riley, etc.

I mean, the Royals, Pirates, Reds, and fans of many other horrible teams are feeling the same way, and front offices are supposed to get us believing there is a "plan" when the truth of the matter is, you just pray the prospects pan out, especially when you are reluctant to fork up millions of dollars like the Yankees and Sox to get the premier players to sign. Heck, if the Orioles were winning every season and paying top dollar for the best free agents would we be saying "Good job Kansas City, you're doing it the right way!" The answer is a definite no, but yet we are sitting here trying to remain faithful, hoping that this "plan" starts bearing fruit.

Wayne, and the rest of the skeptics have every right to remain skeptical. We have all just spent Approx. 1/6-7th of our life span watching a very bad take the field each year. It's frustrating!

So here we are, praying that Matusz, Tillman, and Bergy, Reimold, Pie and company help bring this team back to respectability. Otherwise, we'll wait another 2 years and pray kids like Lebron, Bell, Snyder, Erbe, and Beato come around

Don't forget the Twins, they just gave 185 million to Joe Mauer

They are big spenders too now. No way can we spend with the likes of the Twins

They gave their hometown boy 185 million

I doubt half these idiot even watch any college basketball, let alone watched MD prior to March. The team improved tremendously over the season and won the ACC.

It was an amazing comeback only to lose on a buzz beater. Grevis scored 10 points that were as clutch as clutch can get. Could not be more proud of the Terps.

Since the dopes really have no knowledgable response may I suggest your old stand-byes.....blame Gary's lack of recruiting, Peter Angelos, or the Ravens not drafting Randy Moss for the tough loss today.

clint sounds like a real jerk

Clint, Maryland didn't win the ACC or do you call a tie a win? Duke won the tourney so drop it. They got outplayed today.

The regular season is what counts in the ACC. 13 - 3. Maryland..ACC Champs!!!

Would have won if they pressed for the last 6.6 seconds

Would have won if they pressed for the last 6.6 seconds

Wow...

As a former live-long Spartan fan living in Maryland, I can't believe what I'm reading. Michigan State was supposed to get back tot he Final Four and are thrilled to have advanced past a pure, toss-up game.

Maryland was picked for the middle of the road in the ACC...and ended up as co-champs of the toughest conference in all of Division-I basketball. The Terps have N.O.T.H.I.N.G. to be ashamed of.

If Michigan State had lost today, I would have no problem admitting it came at the hands of a worthy opponent. Be proud of your team, Blue Crab State!!!

The Write Referee - good thoughts. Believe what you are reading. It's the same people who comment all the time about baseball and everything else they think they know about.

Just a heart wrenching loss!

I literally fell out of my chair when the last shot fell. Then I do what many do... continue watching in disbelief, hoping the outcome won't stand... It can't possibly stand...

But it did!

GV carried the team on his back the final few minutes. He simply wasn't going to allow MD to lose. Was one of the best efforts I've ever seen from a Terp player (the last few minutes that is).

I loved the Terps this year. You know why? Most of their games were meaningful! As a fan, that's what you ask for, because if a team is playing meaningful games most of the time, they'll win it all from time to time.

Pete, you absolutely made the right decision today. Yes it hurts, and yes, the buzzer beater was painful. But wasn't it fun? Wasn't the ride enjoyable?

The ride is all I ever talk about!

A few observations from the game:
1) With only six fouls, why didn't MD consider fouling during the final possession (for instance, once MSU got across half-court, make them take a few seconds inbounding the ball again rather than having us on our heels in transition)?
2) It's a shame MD didn't have a time-out during their final possession, since you have to think they would have tried to hold for the last shot rather than give MSU the ball with 7 seconds left.
3) Jordan Williams has made great strides this year and I'm looking forward to seeing him continue to develop into a dominant force in the ACC, but is he incapable of dunking? When you're 6'10 and 260 pounds the finesse moves are nice but you need to be able to take it up strong, force the ball in and get fouls. He looks like the real deal but it would be nice to see him get a little meaner next year.
3) With good players returning from this year's solid campaign and a few good recruits coming in, I hope Gary can build in a strong team-oriented culture next year. This year (the last 4, really) seemed all about Greivis, and Maryland needs to be better-balanced in order to be a true threat for the national championship. And on a personal note, it just gets tiring listing to commentators talk non-stop about one player (Greivis's NBA prospects, Greivis's player of the year hopes, Greivis's family on senior night).

Tonight was certainly a good opportunity wasted. MSU was very vulnerable, especially with the Lucas injury, and given Kansas's loss Maryland was looking at a realistic shot at the final four if they could take advantage and win this one. Gary will be thinking about this game for a while...

I LOVE this tourney. That was a wrenching way to lose after fighting so hard to come back. But when I saw the Michigan State guy with the busted tooth crying at the end, I was reminded of what it means to these kids. It's refreshing to see that this time of year. What a great game.

Yeah it's sad Write Referee. But most on here bashing the team aren't Terps fans. They're haters or trolls who haven't a life and look to hit with cheap shots when youre down.

Today was about as tough a loss as I can remember. Easy to be proud- but harder to take when victory was within grasp. The difference between a great week of hype leading to Friday- and now avoiding espn all week like the plague.

Congrats on the win tho. We picked the wrong day to play the Spartans. Just on fire today.

it would have Almost been better if they stayed down instead of taking the lead at the end.

killed me.

great game.

Andrew:

With six fouls, any subsequent foul would have put them in the bonus (7 fouls and a team reaches the bonus and 10 is the double bonus)and gave them a chance to win the game at the free throw line. Not something you do up by 1. You only employee that up by 3. I thought the same thing because I thought they only committed 5 fouls in the 2nd half. Once I heard they had committed 6, I understood why they didn't foul.

I'm proud of the Terps! This is a team with one decent rebounder against the #2 rebounding team in the country. Did anybody - anybody think they could win with 3 minutes to go? Give props to MSU, they hit the big shot when it matter. By the way, is anyone covering Summers yet? Go O's - Matusz 14 wins this year and a run at ROY.

Pete - The Terps lost because they only played for 39.54 minutes instead of 40 minutes. What on earth were they thinking when they didn't contest the final inbounds pass?

That's the real frustrating moment for me. Their comeback was predicated on some of the best pressing I've seen all year and yet at that critical moment when the game was theirs for the picking they let the Spartans move the ball up the court.

Very sad way to end the season after a heroic battle to come all the way back and take the lead. What could have been.

I have to take exception with you a bit on your Koji article, Pete. You're all over Trembley for saying he's not concerned, but according to the quotation you provide, he didn't even say that. He said at this point he's not "alarmed."

There is a big difference between being concerned and being alarmed, won't you agree? Sure, he should be concerned given Uehara's history of similar injuries, but I think he's right to let this drama play out a bit before he becomes alarmed.

After all, maybe this isn't a severe hamstring injury. I'm sure that's what Trembley's thinking. Pete, you've got to cut him a little slack considering all the other issues he has on his mind. This guy's got a laundry list of them and I think you should lighten up somewhat.

Ken F,

Was your last post about Koji for real? Were you being serious or sarcastic?

I will agree with you though, that Koji can't be blamed for anything. When the O's acquired him, he was what they thought he was......past him prime and injury prone.

And they still brought the guy in..... And it turned out to be great PR as well..

The Terps got hosed by the refs again.

If those idiots had read a rule book, the Spartans would have only had 3 guys left by halftime.

The Spartans held, grabbed, pushed, hacked, over the backed us to death and the refs let them do it. If that's the way the powers that be want, (junior NBA) then please change the rules. I think the game would be much better if they didn't.

RichS:
spoken like a true Maryland fan... blaming the refs. you sir are sad.

ACC Fan: If Maryland did not win the ACC, why do they have a banner hanging in COMCAST that says, "2009-10 ACC Champions"?

Joey...

In defense of not signing Tex... I wanted more than anything for the O's to sign Tex. It simply wasn't going to happen for a variety of reasons, most having to do with him wanting to play for the Yankees and not the O's. This isn't XBox, there are human needs and wants involved and not just click X to sign your guy.

RichS-
Nah... none of that going on. Just hard core, blood and guts, 51-46, no shot clock, peach basket in a metal cage big ten basketball!!! The way basketball was supposed to be played. All ball and not baskets! ha!

Ken Francis,

I think Pete was illustrating Trembley's dilemma with Uhehara more than Trembley's attempt to downplay the injury.

Politically the Orioles and Trembley are stuck with the Uhehara problem. As we see now, Angelos attempt to penetrate the Japanese market was ill advised and Macphail picked the wrong aging player with a history of leg issues, probably because he was being pressured by the owner to act. Now the team is between a rock and a hard place and have to be careful not to "dishonor" Uehara for the fear it may deter future Japanase players from signing with the organization.

This is what happens when Angelos gets involved and pushes his GM to make a politically correct move that Macphail probably would not have done on his own.

If anyone thinks that Angelos is no longer calling the shots they need look no further than the signing of Uehara.

RichS-

There was a pretty silly non call late in the game the Mich St guy that practically landed on Jordan Williams shoulders going for an O-board. Hayes late lay up could have been a 3-pt play as well.

Heartbreaking loss, but all in all, a great season for the Terps this year. I think it's fair to say that they surpassed all of our expectations.

On the Mauer contract: This essentially means that Matt Wieters is going to be in a different uniform in six years. $23M per over eight years for a catcher!?!? I can't wait to see the list of excuses our future GM, and whatever fans are blindly following him, make up if Wieters does live up to his promise...

"He's a Scott Boras client!"

"He's a catcher, so he's probably going to get hurt!"

"We can better use that money on our up and coming prospects!"

"We need to use that money for Joe Freeagent!"

Can't wait!

LOL...the regular season in the ACC is NOT what counts; because of the imbalance of the schedule you twit!

Duke is the TRUE ACC Champ no matter how you idiots want to slice it...They won the ACC tournament which identifies the true ACC champion.

If you really want to get to the nuts and bolts of it, Duke is the real ACC regular season champion too based on head to head scores; 22 vs. 7.

The win in CP over Duke was somewhat lucky as Vasquez hit two lucky shots that only go in at home. You saw the Twerps real color in their losses to GT and MSU.

And boy are you going to SUCK next year. You can't replace the heart and soul AND scoring of Vasquez...welcome to the NIT next year biotches!

Not sure we should have pressed in the last 6 seconds but we let them move the ball upcourt with relative ease. We didn't stop the ball and they set up for the game winner. When I saw how easy they got to the arc, I figured we were screwed. It's a shame but we were down by 16 at one point.

Hey Scott I admit you're ACC Champs. You earned it. You're also right about GV. It will be impossible to replace him, but that is the case with any great player. But taking a cheap shot at the Terps and projecting them to be an NIT team next season is a bit classless on your part. Show a little respect for a team that played its heart out Sunday

Scott..I think the proper spelling is Beotch...Beotch

nb-

Lets hope he turns out to be Mauer with Power. Resigning him to a Gazillion dollars is a good problem to have.

MacPhail gave Sammy Sosa well over $100 mil in chicago. Its not completely out of the realm of possibility for him to extend him.

"He's a catcher, so he's probably going to get hurt!"

See Piazza, Mike- Final 3 seasons for the New York Mets 2003-2005

310 games
288 Hits
50 Home Runs
150 RBI
.265 BA

Not exaclty worth the $48 mil he made in the same time period.

shamrock, were'nt you just saying how much better extensions were than signing free agents ?

well over 100 million ??

LOL

Missed that one

If by well over, you meant well under, you would be right.

The largest extension Sosa ever got from AM was 72 million.

You're only off by 28 million, but no one expects you to be honest or accurate

http://www.latinosportslegends.com/2001/Sosa_signs_extension_with_cubs-031801.htm

AM"s largest contract is 72 mil (sosa)

PGA"s largest contract is 72 mil ( tejada)

IS the fact that these guys are about 100 million off of current prices the reason, elite free agents "just wont come here"

Sosa made over $100 mil in his time with the Cubs. I didn't say it was in 1 contract. Keep in mind the 17mil in the last season with the O's was a part of the deal.

Extensions to catchers are not particularly wise as they tend to break down (ala Piazza).

Do you sit around all day waiting for me to comment so you can reply with 3 posts? I love it. What are you a blog vigilante? You have a good evening talking to yourself an accusing others of being multiple people.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/sosasa01.shtml?redir

wayne - Concerning Koji, you asked if I was being serious or sarcastic. Actually, I was talking getting one's semantics correct: Pete was jumping on Trembley for what he seemingly perceived as the skipper's lack of concern, while Dave said he wasn't "alarmed."

Now I wasn't trying to get in Trembley's head to figure out whether he really is or isn't concerned or whether there is reason for alarm, simply to point out that he never expressed a lack of concern, just of alarm.

The last time I checked the dictionary alarm and concern have different meanings, so I was chiding Pete for not being sufficiently nuanced in his article, that's all.

Gil - You may be right about Pete's intent with the article. Certainly, Trembley is known for his reserve when it comes to dealing with the media.

I don't know that I'd agree with you that the attempt to become a player in the Japanese market was ill-advised per se, but certainly choosing Koji was a calculated risk that hasn't worked out too well so far.

While he's past his prime, I think he still has enough left in the tank to be real asset to the team when healthy...but can he stay healthy enough to contribute. Big question that so far has been answered in the negative.

I'm still not sure he's going for another extended stay on the DL and hope not, but I'll confess that "strained" and "hamstring" were the last words I wanted to see together in a sentence with "Uehara."

wayne and Gil - The post about Koji addessed to you two is mine. I clicked send before entering my name/email. Sorry for the mix-up.

72 million dollar max - Your post about the supposed skinflint habits of Angleos is highly misleading.

In 1998 Angelos signed Albert Belle to a 5 year, $65+M, which in today's money would average around $17M a season. Might not sound like much since we've seen the advent of the $20+M contracts we've seen in more recent years, but for it's day it made Belle the highest paid player in the game.

Theres nothing misleading about it. He's had chances to sign players to higher contracts since then and has chosen not to do it

Thx for playing.

Oh my bad.

When we're on the subject of extensions you just thow in lifetime earnings and/or multiple contracts into the mix.?

"Lets hope he turns out to be Mauer with Power. Resigning him to a Gazillion dollars is a good problem to have.

MacPhail gave Sammy Sosa well over $100 mil in chicago. Its not completely out of the realm of possibility for him to extend him "

Silly me, we're talking about the Mauer extension and you say how AM gave Sosa 100 million?. I guess that I should have known you really meant lifetime with a team instead of extension. You're not going to admit that you're being disingenuine here either. I knew you would try to twist it after you said it. If your lies went unchallenged, you would have been happy with people believing AM would spend 100 million on a given player on a contract extension as you clearly implied here

Ironic, that the biggest e stalker on the blog accuses others of being a blog vigilante. You stalk wayne and jason and then go around pretending to be both just for good measure. You have more identities than anyone could possibly keep up with, but you can keep on thinking that it's not obvious if it makes you feel better
