Orioles: Pregame Dave

Dave Trembley just held court in the dugout and updated the media on some of the issues of the day:

He said that Brian Matusz will be on a 50-pitch limit today against the Twins, but his pitch repertoire will be up to him. The last time out, he worked mostly on his fastball and changeup, but Trembley said the coaching staff is not dictating what pitches he works on early in the spring.

"We don't call pitches anyway,'' Trembley said. "I think the guys out on the field should have a much better feel for what's going on than guys 60 yards away."

Dave conceded, however, that Matusz requires less micromanaging than the average pitcher of his age and experience.

"Matusz is a four-pitch pitcher,'' he said. "That's how he pitches. I told somebody the other day, he's special. That's a great compliment."

Injury update: Trembley said Justin Turner probably will be ready to play tomorrow...He also said that Brad Bergesen will be held to a 35-pitch limit in his exhibition debut on Wednesday.

Hi Pete,

I am beginning to become concerned about Nolan Reimold's recovery. Is he day to day, or has Dave Trembley touched on the issue lately? I think he was originally scheduled to play Saturday, and I see he is not in today's lineup.

If Bergesen isn't as quick to return to form as most have him pegged in doing or if it does turn out that Tillman does need a little more AAA seasoning, who replaces them in the rotation? Hernandez and Berken?

Pete i will continue with this brian roberts injury until i see him playing . I still think we are getting the run around,

Pete's reply: I don't know what you mean by getting the run-around. He's hurt. Everybody knows he's hurt. It's an issue. Will he be ready for the season? It's the kind of injury where they'll think so until proven otherwise. All I can tell you is, I watch him work out every day and he looks loose and active. But back injuries are very tricky, so it's possible it'll be one of those things we're talking about all year.

Is the game going to be on the radio?

I'm wondering the same thing as Gil.

What's the deal with Reimold? Should we expect to see Felix Pie and Luke Scott starting in left field on Opening Day?

Pete's reply: No, but it's an issue until he is pain-free.

Both of them?

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Scott turned one catch into an audition for Lost -- now in its final season; see it before it goes on DVD.

"That was a great episode of Lost"

Heckler 1: "Well, at least the show's got the right name"

Heckler 2: "Yea, I couldn't follow any of it!"

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
