Millwood rocked
Guess I picked the right day to miss an Orioles roadtrip. Kevin Millwood just got hammered by the Detroit Tigers for six runs on seven hits in just 2/3 of an inning in his Orioles competitive debut. Millwood had hoped to pitch through three innings and maybe continue throwing in the bullpen. He threw 30 pitches before being removed.
The good news. The Orioles meteor shower continues. Ty Wigginton just homered off Justin Verlander in the top of the second. That's No. 10 of the spring for the O's, with almost all of their fourth exhibition game to go.

Not Brooks,
Is it OK to worry now? I mean, our "Ace" just got shell shocked! I agree Tillman has looked impressive but I am OK with signing Washburn, and giving Tillman one more year in the minors.
I was hoping Millwood could duplicate his record and ERA from last season this year, but it's safe to say he is going to struggle in the AL East ha ha.

Typical Millwood. Next outing he'll go two innings and give up nine runs. By the end of camp his ERA might be down to about 16.00 or so. As long as he gets in his work and stays healthy, that's the important thing.

That's an article from last year's spring training with Texas. He gave up ten runs in three innings in his third start. Like I said, this is typical Millwood. Nothing to lose your head over.

Milwaukee -
Seriously?
Millwood's got a career ERA of 3.84 vs. the Red Sox (15 starts) and a 4.86 mark vs. the Yankees (9 starts).
If I'm wondering how he's going to fare vs. the AL East in 2010, I'm looking at those numbers, not 2/3 of an inning in Spring Training.
And what would be the point of sending Tillman back to AAA? He's dominated there once already, and he's taken his lumps in his first stint in the majors. Moving him back to AAA (which doesn't seem like it would be much of a challenge for him) would just stunt his progress.

It's his first time pitching against guys that aren't wearing his own team's uniform this year. Give him a break. That's part of what Spring Training is for.

worried? its his spring DEBUT! who cares? this is about getting stretched out and not getting hurt...even though it sounds like he's lucky he didn't take one of the noggin

Regardless of what happenecd today, we should sign washburn. Ppl think JW would be "blocking" the youngsters, but thats irrelevant.
He got off to a hot start last yr. if he can repeat that again this yr, then we can flip him for prospects after 6.1. If he doesnt, well at least we would be spared from seeing the likes of Berken in the starting rotation anytime soon
Cant lose really
Beane loves signing vets to flip for prospects. IF oak is out of it, sheets will be bringing oak something back. it only costs a little payroll and the o;s have lots of room in that dept

Repeat after me:
S - P - R - I - N -- G.
T -- R -- A -- I -- N -- I -- N -- G.
It ain't the 7th game of the World Series.

jason thanks for the payroll updates, i'd lost track.
Wonder if Washburn would take a minor league deal that flips to ML deal if he makes the squad?
Downside is, sending Tillman down to where he's dominated doesn't sound like a great idea, unless he's getting rocked toward the end of ST.
All that said, its time for the Os to commit to sending tillman out for at least the first 1/3 of the season to see what happens unless ST scenario above.

Just look at this guys fantasy auction value...... Nothing else need be said!

Well, there is one other thing that could be said, like.....
See 2007 and 2008...........

I told you so! #1 starter, inning eater who is 35+, won just 13 games for a team that scored 7 runs a game and were paying $10 M for this? And Chen Ming Wang cost $2M???????
The truth will set you free!

It's only March 6th and the I told you so's are already starting.
Awesome.

KEITH!!!!!!
WANG IS HURT!!!!!!!!!!!!
You know, HURT? Rhymes with BURT, infields are made of DIRT, covering my chest is a SHIRT. . .
You are right though, Wang's stats will be better from the first run Millwood allows, SINCE WANG'S ERA WILL BE 0.00 UNTIL HE COMES OFF THE DL!!!! Of course, this all goes without saying that today it is MARCH 6TH, NOT APRIL 6TH and Wang is coming off a season he posted a 9.64 ERA.
Wang finalizes deal with Nats: Pitcher Chien-Ming Wang and the Nationals have finalized a $2 million, one-year contract. The deal includes the chance to earn $3 million in performance bonuses. A right-hander who turns 30 on March 31, Wang had spent his entire five-year major league career with the Yankees, who allowed him to become a free agent in December when they failed to offer a 2010 contract. He made $5 million last year, when he was 1-6 with a 9.64 ERA and his season was cut short by shoulder surgery July 29. He is not expected to be able to pitch until sometime between April and June. "We don't have a date where we're saying that this is when we want him to come back and pitch," Nationals manager Jim Riggleman said. "He's going to come back and pitch when he's ready."
(Updated 02/19/2010).
Injury Report
Shoulder - Out until at least early May
(Updated - 2/16/10)
Replying to you is more futile than trying to get my dog to stop barking at the neighbor or random inanimate objects in my backyard.
I would say, "Please prove me wrong", but I know you won't. Over/Under until your next mindless statement 2.5 days.
Hows that for some truth???

Shamrock -
Keith will rant and rave until the end of time about Millwood's 5.12 ERA in 2007/2008.
But Wang's 5.78 ERA in 2008/2009 and the fact that Wang only threw 24 starts in that time? That won't come up.

Not worried. Keep working on your stuff, Mill'd and if you get hit around, who cares! Come the season, all will be fine. Put your guns down people.....breathe...
NOT worried.

Once again....I'll save some of you Baltimore sports fans from having to use your brains and tell you why he got rocked...and mostly....why it doesn't matter.
The 2 priorities for a SP in the spring are to: STAY healthy..and get his arm and body used to pitching every 5th day for a LONG season.. Now I'm sure he's not happy with getting shelled...but he was more concerned with locating pitches where he wanted them... There is no need to worry....
