MacPhail "less confident" about Roberts

The Orioles officially have stopped denying their concern about the Brian Roberts situation. Andy MacPhail said today that he already had instructed his major league scouts to begin scouring for alternatives in case Roberts is not ready to play on Opening Day.

"We're already started the process of lining up whatever options we need, depending on how long we think he's going to be out,'' MacPhail said. "Every day that goes by you have to be less confident because that's one less day to get at-bats and repetitions."

Dave Trembley has been saying all along that he feels Roberts will be ready on Opening Day, but even he seemed less convinced today.

"It's on my mind,'' he said.

Orioles win... Theeeeeeeeeeeee Orioles win!

And they take a commanding lead at 3-8 over the Nats (0-10) in an attempt to avoid last place in this years Grapefruit League!

Yes, it's only ST, but these two clubs, the bottom 2 teams in their leagues, have made it interesting.

Opening Day Lineup:

Felix Pie
Adam Jones
Nick Markakis
Miguel Tejada
Luke Scott
Garrett Atkins
Matt Wieters
Justin Turner
Cesar Izturis

Let the lynching begin!!!!

Back in the USSR, when the news media said the Premier had a "cold" you knew he had pneumonia. When DT and AM say they are "concerned" about BRob, you know it's something major. This does not bode well. I stand by my earlier statement that I hope the Os give someone in the organization a shot at the job first before going for a stop gap outside the organization.

No leadoff guy--check

No cleanup hitter-- check

No ace--check

No chance at the playoffs-- check

Ha Ha Big E, what a great analogy! And when they said he was resting comforatbly you knew he was already dead.

Get ready, Macphail may actually be forced to trade some prospects! O me, will it ever end!

Check, please....PRICELESS (unfortunately).

I wrote a post right after Roberts announced his back injury. I said athletes ALWAYS down play the extent of the injury and it would appear I'm right. When my disk flares up, I can't even put on my own socks. My prediction, greater then 50% chance Andino is the starting 2B this year. Hope his bat continues to get hot.

Gil -

Come on now. I'm sure there's a cheap option left in the bargin market. I hear Ramon Martinez is still looking for a job. And you really think AM is going to trade a prospect?

Silly you!!!!

Sorry Dave, I lost my head for a moment.

Cgeck forgot one

No fans check

Magic number is only 162

Pete,

Why hasn't Felix Pie been playing? Is he still hurt? Ever since they said he "tweaked" his quad again he's played sparingly and didn't play at all this weekend.

Thanks

Apparently Pie is hurt again; this time his shoulder. I've never seen a guy pull up lame everytime he runs the bases like Pie. The guy is injury prone and I'd start looking at takers for him in a trade. We have Reimold, Scott and Montanez who can play in left.

As far as BRob goes, back problems don't just go away; especially when the dics is involved. I don't see Roberts playing in half the games this year.

make that disc; not dics....Freudian slip.

No ace? Have you ever heard of Brian Matusz? We're not gonna be great this year, but I have a lot of hope for the future!

MacPhail knows baseball, but there are plenty of us out here who know "backs."

If Trembley's success this year depends on W/L then now would be a good time for hime to tweak his resume.

Put Reimold on the DL and lets protect our asset.

Justing Turner or Abreu is an excellent replacement for Roberts. It sounds like me to McPhail does not have enough confidence in the farm system to use these 2 guys. The are much better than Andino. Even Wiggie would be better than Andino. Replace Andino with Abreu

talking about the "future" is the best way to avoid accountability about the present

we've been talking about the "future" for years

presumably when macphail came on in 2007, 2010 was the future, therefore the future is NOW

Why don't you guys grow up? Injuries are a part of baseball. Stop trying to place more blame at the feet of Angelos, MacPhail, and Trembley. Look at the Mets last year, and they play the "spend, spend, spend" game. Heck, look at the Mets THIS year. Get a life. Be a real fan, quiet down, and let's see what is what, ok?

Go O's!

Injuries are part of the game, and part of the GM jobs is build enough depth to overcome a couple injuries. It's ST, we have one guy out and already most are writing off the season. So lets set the record straight. We weren't gonna win with Brob willing the league MVP. The GM has no plan and flying as cheaply as he can by the seat of his pants. Beyond a 4th outfielder and a few stiffs who can fill in the OF, we have no depth, let me guess for you Kool Aid drinkers that must be someone fault other than AMs of course!

I told you so!

The truth will set you free!

Wow - where is the "improvement" over the last 4 years? This is awful.

Oh well, it's not this year or next year, but the year after, right? Always, the year after next....

Paul,

Did you have to put that in print?

People, welcome to the 2010 Baltimore Oriole opening day line-up.

Folks..... this is a really bad baseball 'team'.

Oh yeah, this is why we didn't even consider Chone Figgins - redundancy at the top of the order.

I wonder if this is an omen of things to come. At the year 2099, when we look back at the last 100 years of Oriole baseball, and what do we see? Will we see Oriole Magic, or futility?

We might as well cancel the season. How long would it take until somebody noticed?

What a bunch of whiners. Go root for the Yankees.

brian,

so matusz and his 5 career wins is already considered an ace ?

he MIGHT become an ace, but lets see something a little better than A 4.63 ERA AND 1.48 Whip before the coronation ceremony begins

At one time people were gushing over a prospect called luis matos labelling him the next carlos beltran, so lets not get ahead of ourselves. Matt Riley was rated as high as Matusz (reaching i believe #3 overall on BA) and is now trying out for independent league baseball

For evey prospect that pans out, there's 100 that doesnt amount to anything. Your insurance agent might have played in AA for all you know

The mets lost over 1400 games to injuries and still won more than the Orioles last year

This year, Reyes and Beltran will start the season the DL and they'll win more games than the Orioles this year too.

Oriole fans cracking on the Mets ?

Must not be paying attention

I'd be surprised if the O's do not trade for a stopgap 2B soon. What are the options? Wiggington is, shall we say, not the type of athlete who projects as quickly learning to play a position which requires quickness and agility. Andino is our entire middle-infield bench, so if he moves to 2B we'd need to trade anyway to replace that. Abreu needs to be at AA; better to trade cheaply for someone else's not-MLB-ready guy and ruin him than to ruin our own prospect. I am not happy.

150 - 250 days
This Orioles team is one of the worst ever. He cant keep his job if they lose close to 100 again.

Bob Arctor = Brian Roberts

Fans "less confident" about MacPhail.

Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
