Ravens interested in T.O.? Say it IS so.
When I read Kevin Van Valkenburg's report from the NFL combine that John Harbaugh has opened the door to the "return" of Terrell Owens to the Ravens, I almost spit out my granola.
OK, it was three Egg McMuffins, but who's counting. The possibility of the Ravens making another run at T.O. is almost too delicious to contemplate -- at least from the perspective of a sports columnist and a blogger. If that really happened, I might actually set up a cot next to his locker and just live there all season.
I'm not holding my breath. Ravens fans remember what happened when the Ravens traded for T.O. a few years ago. He made such a stink about not wanting to play in Baltimore that the trade ended up being rescinded. I'd like to think this is a forgiving town, but who are we kidding?
Hypothetical scenario: If T.O. could guarantee that he'd catch 50 balls next year and make two game-winning plays, would you want him?

At some point, they need to finally address the need for young wideouts. A team with Stallworth, Mason, and TO as your top three? Got some age there.

To answer your "T.O" question - HELL NO!!!

omgosh the ravens are interested in me!

Lower Level Midfield Ticket to Ravens games: $130
Concession Beer: $7
Terrell Owens pouting, then glaring and yelling at Joe Flacco for failing to look in his direction on a given series: Priceless!

I have to think this is just pre-draft misinformation, as well as a bit of driving the market price up for anyone who does go after TO. Even if we didn't want him- why publicly state we're out of the bidding and help another team get him on the cheap.
Given the trade ordeal in 2004 as well as the specific accusations he made against Newsome I really think this is out of the question. As well- Harbaugh was there when everything disintegrated for TO and Andy Reid; do you really think he would welcome the same personal risk here, especially when Harbaugh's done well so far and isn't desperate. Harbaugh always makes these kind of magnanimous comments to the press, sometimes right before he's about to push someone out the door.
That said, if we could get TO on the cheap, and add him to a hopefully-signed Mason and Stallworth; that would represent a major upgrade of our receiving talent without even wasting a draft pick or assuming a huge, long-term free agent contract. The Ravens would be more free to pursue their "best player available" draft strategy (perhaps landing the #1 CB we need), maintain their flexibility to pursue a true #1 WR through the draft or trade, and gain an option to pick some high-upside WRs in the middle rounds to develop across the coming year. If TO would sign a low-priced one- or two-year deal with a lot of contingent money, why not?

TO is a cancer.
Posted by: O's Fan in Montana | February 28, 2010 1:35 PM
If you really want to destroy the team, why not take direct action? Just blow up the clubhouse. Then tell the fans to pound sand.
Why take the slow, cancerous route of a T.O.?
T.O. should be Totally Outtathequestion!!
Posted by: kjerry | February 28, 2010 1:44 PM
If the Ravens wind up with Stallworth and T.O. this offseason, (insert something clever about turning my attention to other things when football rolls around).
The Ravens need more character and fewer characters. Honestly, this s--- is ridiculous.
Posted by: Grant | February 28, 2010 2:07 PM
Ozzy: just say N.O. to T.O.
TO = Team Obliterator
Posted by: Ferg Deluxe | February 28, 2010 2:08 PM
To you dumbies..that watch gumpo Skip Bayless and say TO shouldn't come not only need to learn to think for themselves...but learn football. T.O would be an awesome addition.. He had 856 yds and 5TD on a team with NO OLine OR QB..
And also to you moronic Over-fans.. we're talking about a player that doesn't drink or abuse drugs... works his tail off everyday...and plays hurt (did y'all forget about the broken leg in the Super Bowl) and never gets in trouble with the Law. He's a 1st ballot HOFer and he'd be the best WR to play in Baltimore since Raymond Berry. BUT YOU SAME DUMMIES WOULD TAKE BRANDON MARSHALL WHO IS ONE SLAPPING OF HIS FIANCE AWAY FROM GETTING SUSPENDED OR VINCE JACKSON WHO'S IN JAIL RITE NOW FOR HIS, WHAT 3RD DWI.. Get a grip folks....
Posted by: The Guru | February 28, 2010 2:35 PM
Okay, so... Wasn't character issues one of the reasons that the Ravens wouldn't pursue Brandon Marshall?
But they sign Stallworth, and are now possibly considering T. O.?
Did I miss something?

Football news.........really?

Pete's reply: Really.
Posted by: Det Munch | February 28, 2010 2:49 PM
I think it would be best if T.O. would be teamed with a veteran QB (Favre or someone even older) PLEASE............
Posted by: NormO's | February 28, 2010 2:53 PM
Absolutely.....
Because you see everyone, it's about winning - nothing less!
Draft a young receiver, allow a couple other youngsters to grow, and let TO, Stallworth, Mason and Clayton have at it.
The Ravens are already a deep playoff team (2 years running). To get over the top, you must add the required missing elements.
Rent TO for a year or two, draft a developing WR, and enjoy the passing attack.
To those always wanting nothing but 'young developing players'... see the Orioles. Also see - constant losing!
It's always and ONLY about winning people!
Posted by: wayne | February 28, 2010 3:05 PM
Settle down, Guru.
If it's about winning, and only winning, then you definitely say N.O. to T.O. He has successfully torn apart 3 of the 4 locker rooms he's played in: San Fran, Philly, Dallas.
Do I want that kind of cancer on a team I route for? Nope. Don't want Brandon Marshall either.
I don't give a rat's patootie whether T.O. is a first ballot hall of famer or not. The Ravens were right to go after him 5 years ago when he mattered. Now, he's on the down side of his career, drops too many balls, is no longer a game-changer, and is widely considered a clubhouse pest. No one is scared of T.O. anymore, no one game-plans for him, and they haven't been doing so in a while. Ask yourself why.
Yeah, sign me up for some Totally Overrated. I'm such a dummie.
Posted by: Ferg Deluxe | February 28, 2010 3:19 PM
For as much commotion as he would cause with us (the fans) he would not be a bad rental for a year or 2 as the youngsters get ready to take over. Plus Joe would love to have 2 or 3 threat options!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!GO RAVENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: MICHAEL T | February 28, 2010 3:22 PM
I can't stand T.O., but ironically I love his show. Go figure??
Posted by: Kevin In Iraq | February 28, 2010 3:38 PM
If it resulted in him doing a touchdown dance on the Steelers' logo at Heinz Field just once, I'd say take T.O.
Posted by: BaltoJim | February 28, 2010 3:43 PM
TO idemnifies all that is wrong with the NFL of late. A petulantly childish demeanor, a failure to practice the most elemental of fundementals and teamanship, and certainly without the guts to catch anything over the middle where he might actually have to take a hit. A tremendous waste of obvious talent, in an over paid obnoxious package.
Posted by: Bill_H | February 28, 2010 4:15 PM
Guys like Guru give football fans a bad name. And, guys like TO give players a bad name. TO is a 37 YO obsessed with personal records at this point in his career to elevate his status in the HOF. He's not about winning and his me,me, me gets old fast with a young QB and offiensive line trying to gel. He fits best with St Louis or Detroit IMHO.
Posted by: zigzag | February 28, 2010 4:29 PM
Wayne, you sound like a steroids dealer. Winning without class is bogus. And, using your logic its OK to cheat. I guess guys like Jeffrey Mayer are heroes to you if they do it to ensure an O's win. Guys like you and Guru are what's wrong today in sports, government, society......

I would have liked Ravens to contiune weed out character or clubhouse cancer type players . However , there are 3 things to consider before signing T.O.
1) Do the Ravens contiune to stand pat with WR corps and let RB Ray Rice to contiune to lead team in receptions ?
2) Would the Ravens draft rookie WRs and put them to starting jobs by default ?
Are they willing to gamble that they would perform ?
3) Can the Ravens sign T.O. for one year only ? If yes , then that means T.O. will have very short leash .
The Ravens are a playoff caliber team , any veteran WR ( BMarsh , Boldin , VJacksn , MFloyd and even T.O. himself ) would be upgrade for Ravens WR corps . Do we really want watch Clayton disappear on field , and DWilliams in the doghouse for another year ????

Winning without Class sure beats Losing with Class any day of the week and twice on sundays
If you want Class , go watch Figure Skating

Let's take a closer look at those Terminally Offensive stats.
He had only one game with 100+ yards.
Terribly Ordinary caught 60+ yards in only 5 of 16 games this year; he put up less than 50 yards 9 times.
That 829 yards looks somewhat decent until you consider that almost 200 of those yards came in a single game, and 98 of those 200 came on a single play. Not exactly an example of consistency, unless of course you consider the consistent string of 30- and 40-yard games.
Essentially, Tedious Oaf had a 600 yard year if you consider the 15 games that weren't a statistical aberration.
Yeah, he's a game changer alright.
But what about that offense? Isn't it crummy? Well yes, yes it is. They ranked near the bottom in total yards. They were essentially the same offense the year before and Lee Evans put up 1000+ yards. After the addition of Too Old, Buffalo's offense actually got worse. If Terrifyingly Offensive was a difference maker, don't you suppose that the Bills offense would have gotten just a smidge better? I mean sure, it was a crappy offense, but doesn't the addition of a supposed superstar game-changer mean that the offense would get at least a little better?
Nope, it dropped 8 spots. Do I think that it's all due to Tragically Obnoxious? Certainly not. But he didn't help, not one bit.
He's nothing any more. He's a has-been which is funny to say, because he's almost a never-was. Team Obliterator's teams have never won anything. Philly's SB run occurred with Truly Obsolete looking from the bench with an injured ankle/foot.
Just say N.O. to T.O. Make him somebody else's 600 yard problem.
Put him in the HoF -- his stats are worthy. He'll be known as the best receiver to do absolutely nothing but leave unhappy teams in his wake.

Well said Allan,
Only and Always about winning!
This isn't Little League everyone. Your parents aren't in the stands hoping for a nice, clean game. This is the big leagues - where the big boys play.
WInning matters!
Posted by: wayne | February 28, 2010 5:37 PM
Winning and character generally go hand-in-hand in the fans mind. For years the Patriots had nothing but 'character' and the won a number of Super Bowls. Then the streak ended and the character flaws 'appeared' as team members and coaches grumbled about this and that. The fans too noticed the sudden appearance of character flaws that were there all along, but where icinged over by winning. That story repeats itself, just new teams cycle in all the time.
If TO could revive the Raven's passing game and put W's on the board, the fans would love him. That being said, I don't think he has it any more.
Posted by: dedalus | February 28, 2010 7:45 PM
The ravens biggest weakness is too glaring and has been the same for too long to not look at EVERY possibility. I'll leave it to the coaches to look at the film and decide why TO's numbers stunk last year. You're not gonna have 52 choir boys on any team in the NFL. HEY WAYNE, I'm with you on this one! If he can make em better, get him.
Posted by: cush | February 28, 2010 8:55 PM
As an Eagles fan, let me tell you right now that you do not want him on your team. He's selfish and only cares about stats, not winning. Stay away.
Posted by: Doug | February 28, 2010 8:59 PM
The dude can still play. Ask anyone who's trying to tackle him in the open field.
As to him being a disruption in the locker room? Ray Lewis and John Harbaugh have that under control.
Yeah i think T. O. can help.
Posted by: onceawarrior | February 28, 2010 9:13 PM
T.O. is more trouble than he's worth. The guy is on the downside of his athleticism and his attitude is total garbage. One game without enough passes his way and he'll start crying like a damned child. Obviously we need some speed and toughness at the WR position but this dude is not the answer. I believe we should concentrate more on an effective pass rusher than spend millions on THIS clown.
I still believe Brandon Marshall would be a better fit for us. Even Vincent Jackson...just not crybaby boy.
Posted by: sikspakk | February 28, 2010 9:51 PM
As much as I would love a player like TO, I just don't know if he has enough left in the tank at this point to make it worthwhile for the distractions (even how little they may be) that we would have to put up with.
"That's my quarterback"
Posted by: Frank | February 28, 2010 11:09 PM
I watch football. TO has butterfingers! He is a washed up bum!
He does not have explosive speed anymore. He is hard to bring down IF he catches the ball.
I hope Ozzie agrees with me.
Posted by: Ken from Brunswick | March 1, 2010 12:09 AM
Peter-
The one thing about TO is, even though his ability is nowhere near where it once was, for some reason, teams still double-team him.
That could be huge.
I still say, if thats what they decide to do, then they HAVE to grab a WR early on draft day. They can't be THAT old at the position.
But, we know Ozzie, watch, he'll draft an OL or a DT or something. He is the firm believer in best player available. It hasn't hurt him yet I guess.
Posted by: Ryan | March 1, 2010 1:29 AM
TO pretty much behaved himself last year in BUF and even thanked the fans. I guess it's easy to be jaded but maybe TO has improved on that front.
TO, despite his age, has only missed one game in the last four years. He is ALWAYS fit. And even with BUF's anemic offense and dunderhead coach last year, he did still managed more than 15 yards per catch.
No one has ever accused him of taking plays off. His complaints usually are because of not being thrown to enough. Being an aging, fit veteran who is highly interested in being involved sounds as much like Derrick Mason as it does TO. Remember, Mason was wimpering during the 13-3 year but was happy as a clam when the Ravens fell to 5-11.
The price he will likely command should be reasonable.
I also find it funny a PHI fan chimed in as a TO basher when an injured TO was one of the few Eagles to show up the year they played in the SB.
I am not sold on TO. The quote he attributed to Ozzie would make me think it would never happen. But if it did happen, the 2010 receiving corp could end up being a very effective compliment to the running game and buy time if the Ravens acquired some necessary young talent.

Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho!
This jerk T.O. has gotta go (somewhere else, please)
Posted by: kjerry | March 1, 2010 6:30 AM
Thanks Wayne !
The Ravens' recent comments by the owner and gm has stated their willingness to be flexible on character or class risks . Why?
Because they WANT TO WIN
Posted by: Allan | March 1, 2010 7:47 AM
Wayne and Allen, if its all about winning does that mean its OK to fix games, cheat, use stimulants and steroids, etc. Is that OK with you guys? Is it OK to chop block and perform other manuevers to injure or otherwise deliberately try and injure your opponent? Is head hunting cool if it leads to a win? By the way, professional sports is not about winning its about money! You may find my desire for integrity and sportsmanship childish. I know lots of win win win guys like you. You've sucked the life out of high school and rec. travel baseball teaching your kids to rely on things other than talent to win.

I would have no interest in T.O. at all.............. PLEASE don't bring him to Baltimore!!!!
Posted by: ScottP from DE | March 1, 2010 9:15 AM
zigzag,
Last I checked, I've not asked for any team to sign someone who fixes games, cheats, uses stimulants, chop blocks, tries to hurt an opponent or head hunts.
Never!
So please take your high school/rec travel league speech elsewhere as it was inappropriate to bring up in this conversation.

Wayne , myself and others prefer good playmakers that can impact a team"s chances to compete .
Your take on game fixing , stimulants , cheats , hurt tactics , etc, etc,
Isnt that the respondsibilty for commitees , judges , directors , owners and coaches to worry about ? The sports world is not full of innocent kids or teens , these are professional atheletes , where on field results ( like winning for example ) impacts their livelihoods .
By the way , did see you how winning the hockey gold impacts the Canadian public ? Or even the Saints SB victory in New Orleans streets ?
Life is too short to fuss over petty things .
Posted by: Allan | March 1, 2010 1:53 PM
Wayne and Allan, look, the issue isn't your point its how you tried to make it. It started with me saying I wanted them to win with class. Allan's retort was " Winning without Class sure beats Losing with Class any day of the week and twice on sundays If you want Class , go watch Figure Skating", then Wayne piled on with "Only and Always about winning! This isn't Little League everyone". You guys exploited the word class and I in turn exploited Wayne's choice of the words Always about winning and your juvenile reference to figure skating and little league. If you disagree with me that's cool. A gentile rebuttal is welcomed. Just be prepared to look in the mirror when other use the same tactics deployed by you. And, recognize at some point your voices fall on deaf ears when civility is discarded for want of puffery. I think we're all done with this. Peace out.
Posted by: zigzag | March 1, 2010 4:28 PM
Ok, ok. Lets cut TO a one year deal, with some provisions.
1. He must wear a muzzle, 24/7, between July 15 and February 7.
2. Failure to do so will result in his dismissal and a non-negotiable fine equal to 2.5 times his contract.
Posted by: Chris | March 3, 2010 1:04 PM
The main question behind TO isn't just his playing ability and how the fans of Baltimore feel. Let's be serious; if he gets work done on the field, the fans will change the beat of their drum to praise and cheering.
The main concern is how will he fit in with the players? One of the best things about the Ravens is their team unity. They play together, lose together, and rarely have you ever heard them complain about another player publicly.
I would hate to see what happened in Dallas happen in Baltimore. The team choosing sides and not standing together anymore.
But hey that's Dallas. I would like to think that the Ravens have a bond that can't be broken. But only time will tell.
