Orioles: Roberts' rosy outlook
Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, who revealed on Monday that he was diagnosed with a small herniated disk in his back about a month ago, said that he thinks he’ll be able to take live batting practice “within a week.”
Roberts took groundballs and was able to participate in most of the first full-squad workout. However instead of taking live batting practice, Roberts hit off a tee and did some soft toss in the indoor batting cages.
“I’m not very far behind” said Roberts, who also lifted weights and did conditioning. “We’re just gradually working back into it.”

Pete,
Pat Burrell had a similar injury last year for the Rays and look at the season he had. Fought it all year and was a DH! I know, I know, everyone's back is different, but this isn't a minor injury...

Pete, let's say that everything turns out fine for Brian, don't you think adding Felipe Lopez would still make sense? I think a guy that can play 3B, 2B and SS would be a great addition. I would also like to see Jermaine Dye added to the roster because I don't think Luke is a full time player and Dye still has a lot of pop left.

posted this on an earlier story...
F. Lopez makes too much sense and costs too much for the O's. IMHO, he would have been a better option than Miggy. At any rate, he sure looks damn good now. But, only winners make bold moves. That's not the O's.

Birdland Todd,
Who are you getting rid of to add those guys onto the roster?
Lopez's fielding is about as good as Wiggy's at those positions. Ok, maybe he's definitely better at SS, but I'd expect Wiggy to be better at 1B.
I think Lopez is a case of "the other girl." You know, that thing where you say, "Yeah, my girl's alright, but that other girl..." when that other girl is pretty much the same girl as the girl you got, only maybe she's left handed or something. Sure, it's fun in the beginning, like a kid getting a new toy, but in the end, you're right back where you started.
As for Dye, I don't know that he's gonna give you anything that Reimold can't. Especially if you look at Dye's last few months in the 2009 season. I mean, if you really don't wanna DH Scott during one of his cold streaks, you can throw Pie in left and DH Reimold. You'll get better hustle and speed on the base path with his younger legs... all at a fraction of the cost.

Chris,
Lopez is a contact hitter as opposed to Wiggy and his all or nothing type approach. How many times did Wiggy fail to advance a baserunner? The guy doesn't belong on the team. Lopez was labeled with the "bad attitude," but he still is young enough where he can turn it around plus when you go to your bench, you want a guy to put the ball in play and not just pop it up. I think he could add a lot to the team regardless of Brian being hurt, healthy or somewhere in-between.
I am not talking about Dye instead of Reimold. I think Nolan is going to have an amazing season. He seems very mature for his age and knows what he's doing at the plate. I like Felix as the 4th OFer and I like Chad as the backup catcher, but there are still two spots left to fill and I think Dye can get AB's at DH because Luke isn't a full time player plus listening to guys who know him, they say he is very agile and could be very good at 1B so when you want to rest Atkins at 1B or Miggy at 3B, you put Dye at 1B. I think there are a lot of AB's to go around.

Bergie's injury is definitely material for a sequel to "Dumb and Dumber," but it's too early for the B-Rob situation to get the Camden Yards screenwriters to work on "Doom and Doomer." Still, as someone who has lived with a herniated disk for two decades, I'd sure advise B-Rob to avoid the golf course. If you've got a herniated disk, the torque of a golf swing can put you on your back for a couple weeks.

ok, kjerry - I wouldn't think swinging a bat would hurt too much though? you?

Pete's reply: Actually, any activity that twists the torso is going to be tricky with a herniated disk, at least when it's inflamed.

Todd,
I'm pretty convinced that Wiggy just had a bad year last year. If you look at his pitches per AB last year, they were way down. I don't think that's the kind of player he normally is. That said, I'm not really the biggest Wiggy fan either. But I wouldn't put all the "failing to move the base runner over" thing on him as pretty much most of the O's had that problem last year. I just don't see what you would do with Wiggy if you signed Lopez. You'd be forced to find a trade partner pretty quick and that would lessen his value. I'm not saying they shouldn't try to trade him before the season (personally I think his spot could be filled by Scott Moore, who I think deserves at least half a chance in the bigs), but I think if they're coming from a position of strength, where they don't NEED to trade him, then they're more likely to get a better deal.
As for Dye, I wasn't thinking that you're saying he should replace Reimold, I'm just saying he's kind of unnecessary with Reimold on the roster. Reimold can get DH ABs when Luke is off, which will also get Pie ABs as he can play LF on those days. Plus, he's played just as much 1B as Dye... none. I'm pretty sure a lot of people think Reimold could handle 1B, but it's all speculation as far as both of them are concerned. Also, you have to remember that there are going to be plenty of days where you have Wieters at DH. Between all that, Dye wouldn't be getting that many ABs and I'm pretty sure that's not something I'd be interested in if I were him.
