Orioles: Reporting day
The Orioles are filtering into the clubhouse on the official reporting day for pitchers and catchers, and we've already had a group interview with Koji Uehara, who says his elbow feels good.
"Compared to last year, it feels really good,'' he said through interpreter Jiwon Bang. "I threw yesterday at the minor league complex and it felt good."
When somebody asked him about his chronic hamstring issues, he was a bit more circumspect.
"So far, so good,'' he said.
Uehara is slotted as a middle reliever this year, but he said he hasn't heard that officially from the Orioles.
"I haven't really spoken to the skipper or the front office yet,'' he said -- and Jiwon really did use the word "skipper," but my goal is to stay in the major leagues all season. We'll see what happens."

Hamstring problems can linger. Maybe that is why Koji has a new personal trainer/masseuse. More strength. More flexibility. Less running.
Probably a good course of action.

This guy will be right up there with the Eaton's of the world as far as terrible Andy signings. Not only was he over the hill, not only was he no longer a starter, not only was he damaged goods, but it also made everyone in Japan who wasn't aware of Baltimore baseball, understand how no one will want to come here in the future.
Where's wayne when you need him. I can hear him now 'hey Pete, enough of about Koji'.

Thanks Dr, waspman,
The guy is coming off a season ending elbow problem which he says 'compared to last year, it feels really good', and then says 'so far so good' about his hamstring.
Now don't we all feel so much better about this team going into this season?
You can't make this stuff up!

Arm problems can be caused by leg problems. It doesn't really take a doctor to know that.
Saying, "So far, so good," about a hamstring injury maybe something that is said for years afterwards. I know this from personal experience and finding out that it is not all that uncommon. The fact Koji worded it as such tells me he's not BS'ing anyone.
I find that rather refreshing.
It hasn't changed my opinion of this team in general or my prediction of 74 wins in 2010. I'll piss and moan when I think it's appropriate, but I'm not going to do it just out of habit.
I leave that to those who do make stuff up.

I really don't understand how Koji's injuries make the O's look bad in Japan. If anything, it would give us synpathy over there because we havent gotten alot out of Koji yet.
And while Eaton was a disaster that everyone but the front office saw coming, Koji was a good gamble. He obviously wasnt as durable as we hoped for. But when he did pitch, he showed great stuff that was worth a risk. Signing any pitcher is a gamble. We all ask the FO to spend money and in this case they did.
Koji has a good chance to contribute in 2010 and at least earn some of that money.

74 wins? Wow, 7 games under 500. A significant achievement in Baltimore I suppose.
As for Japan, it's not the injuries. It's that very few knew about baltimore baseball other than Cal before. Now there's an awareness of baltimore baseball in Japan. An awareness that the orioles are always one of the worse teams in baseball. Great for future signings, wouldn't you say?

I want to make sure I read this right --- " but my goal is to stay in the major leagues all season. We'll see what happens."
Oh boy... that gets me excited, we have a guy who hopes to stay in the bigs...he was a bad signing and only AM was excited about it.

Just a waste of money. Ten million on a broken down relief pitcher. Three halfwits at 5 million each a year or one very good major league player at 15 million. Stop budget shopping. You can date a 10 or you can date five 2's...

What would you "Koji has made Baltimore a joke in Japan" yokels have the Orioles do? You complain that they never even try to sign anybody, harping that the team says "we'll wait until we're good before we sign anybody who's any good," then you moan and groan because they signed a guy when they're not very good and you think that that has damaged all future chances to sign anybody. Folks, you can't have it both ways here.

The O's will suck. Last place. Remember I said this.
