Orioles: Phil Itzoe (1937-2010)
Even though Phil Itzoe worked behind the scenes in the Orioles organization for 45 years, I think just about everybody who was an Orioles fan knew him or knew of him. Just a great guy who never said no to anyone during his 41 years as the club's traveling secretary.
Phil coordinated Orioles travel in good times and bad and did it with great cheer, though it was a difficult job with so many variables that I saw lesser guys on other teams tear their hair out trying to keep everything straight. Not Phil. He was so good at his job that even the out-of-town guys (of which I was one in the 1980s) would call him with their travel-related problems, and he would always find a way to help.
I miss him already.
If you haven't already, go over to the sports section and read Jeff Zrebiec's story.

Phil was a great guy and he will be missed. No matter how crazy the request, Phil always handled it with class and treated you with respect. My sympathies to his family.

Jesus Christ, Wayne, have some f*cking respect....

Wayne, sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot, than to open it and remove all doubt!
Posted by: Scott Graeff | February 11, 2010 12:20 AM
I second that, Nick.
And you know what? Things have turned so badly here to the point that I fully expected to see some garbage like that from wayne or jason on this post.
What a joke...
In response to the thread: I've heard Phil's name before, but I didn't know anything about him. Sounds like a great guy though. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Way to take your d!ckery to the next level, Wayne.

Wayne, you really suck dude. Your whole bad boy image that you are trying to create is so stupid. You really need to just stay away from posting on some of Pete's stories.
Why don't you just go root for the Yankees...it will make your life a lot easier.

So it looks like it's time for George Costanza to step up and take over.

I propose we all just put a moratorium on responding to Wayne; pretend that he and his comments don't exist. He gets off on making everyone p*ssed off at him. This comment should let us know that none of his comments have any real credibility, and he's not even worth responding to.

Pete,
Can't Wayne just be banned? The guy is classless and has basically ruined this blog.

Phil was almost as important to the Orioles success as F.Robby & Brooksie. There are so many things that go on behind the scenes, just to make that game your watching happen.
Phil was the BEST in Baseball. ALL of baseball. He received the Donald Davidson Memorial Award, given to the top traveling secretary in the major leagues to affirm it. He did so many things. In the days, I was fortunate enough to be associated with the Club he was the Traveling Secretary. Those duties were never ending. Air and Ground Transportation, Lodging, Family Tickets and Access. Ahhhh Per Diem money. This is how we all ate.
Back at home, he was planning the next road trip. Still taking care of players Tickets and Family access needs. Which BTW Triples when your at home. The man never missed a beat. NEVER.
Oh and sense of humor. I was caught in it more than once. The duo's of Orioles past, Aparicio-Johnson, Belanger-Grich, Ripken-Ripken, were no match for the Itzoe-Henneman combo.
Before my time, I was told Phil was the PR Director. Back when you really had to work for the facts and numbers. There was no information highway. Heard he was a good as they come. The Orioles are the top rung on that ladder. Bob Brown, John Blake, Rick Vaughn,Bill Stetka, John Maroon, and now Monica Pence. The Orioles maybe expierencing a swoon on the field recently. But never in PR. If you could hand out a World Championship ring in this catagory. The Yankees 26, would pale in comparison.
So to Phil son's Josh (my little Buddy) & MariaLisa. This is a tough one. But believe me, this is a time for celebration. Your Father touched and changed EVERYONE he came in contact. We should all be so lucky to be able to do what he did, year in & year out. He made us smile.
THANKS Phil, you're gonna be missed. It just won't be Orioles baseball without Phil Itzoe!

It's just amazing how people on this blog,Roch's and the Hnagout are always seething to attack someone that dares dosagrees with this front office. No matter how dumb an O's move, it gets praised as McPhail being a genius.
Last year the same people that are having orgasms now about signing Hendrickson were saying how he sucked then,Everybody has Matuz and Tillman fighting it out for the Cy Young award this year when both will probably be .starting at AAA with Berken and Hernandez being the 4th and 5th starters. Tejada will flunk at 3rd and wind up playing SS for a good part of the year. atkins will have a hard time hitting his weight and Gonzo will wind up being the loogy.
Oriole fans are a victim of group think, just like the rest of society today.

I didn't know Phil as well as I did his brothers and parents. But him be a kind hearted soul as he was is not surprising knowing how his parents were. Mr. & Mrs Itzoe owned Itzoe's newsstand down the street from where we lived in New Freedom, PA. WE would walk down to pick up a newspaper and Mr. Itzoe always greeted us with a smile and a wave of his cigar. We didn't have any money, and he would also give us a piece of candy or let us hang around his shop or play his pinball machine. On Sunday mornings on our way to church (we would walk to church) and he would pick us kids up and take us there. Phil's mother, Bonnie, loved us kids and we would sometimes sit with her up in the balcony at church. So Phil had some wonderful, kind, ways instilled in him growing up and passed his kindness and caring on to the players. What a wonderful legacy to leave behind. We will miss you, Phil.

To Kevin, thanks for your email and for such an incredibly thoughtful and fitting tribute to Dad - it brought a tear to my eyes. Rarely have I met a person who so consistently put the needs of others before his own and did so without ever asking for anything in return. Thanks for sharing some of the great memories about Dad!

Have you all ever thought about just ignoring the idiotic posts by Wayne et al.?
I mean, the more you respond to their posts, the more they will keep coming back for more. I rarely post anymore because there is no baseball talk, just a bunch of insults and catastrophic thinking.

For years I taught American History and Culture, and along the way picked up many video clips and quotes that helped me teach about life while I taught the subject manner.
I feel that the words from one of the clips I use would be useful at this time. For the last several weeks, I believe that the conversation on this blog has deteriorated dramatically.
The following comes from a very brilliant movie, "Ratatouille":
"In many ways the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read.
But, the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things … the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something … and that is in the discovery and defense of the new."
I don't believe that fans should blindly agree with everything that the front office does. Butt I have compassion for people like AM, who have the very public responsibility for turning around an organization that significantly lacked the assets or the capacity to match its competitors.
I have stated that I believe the front office to be competitive, but not particularly creative. Their competence will restore the Orioles to a winning record in the future, but unless they demonstrate the necessary creativity, it will still fall short.
That said, competence is what the Orioles most needed in 2007 when AM took over. As a former mentor of mine once said, "Creativity is a privilege given to those who have mastered the basics." I hope now that the organization is learning to master the basics, the creativity will soon follow.

Phil was a man who epitomized class, humility, and all that was best about the "Oriole Way." He was respected by everyone. He will be missed greatly. It's another sad loss for the organization.
Rest in peace, Phil.
(And I second banning comments in poor taste, especialy when it concerns someone's death.)
Posted by: The Big E | February 11, 2010 8:21 AM
European Prof i just sprained a couple synapses. Good thing I drink a lot of beer to weed out the weak ones.
you're right, its easy to criticize. takes no brain, takes no creativity.
AM has turned things around and has the Os on a good track. I have my doubts about the 'demonstrating the necessary creativity' part.

I've heard his name for years but never really appreciated what he did.
The posts by Tessie, Kevin Allen, and Josh Itzoe helped fill in my image of the man.
It's a sad day for O's fans to hear of the loss of someone who worked so hard for the organization for many years. My condolences to his friends and family.
Wayne, seriously, your post could not have been more inappropriate.

Just a little old lady remembering way back to high school days in New Freedom , Pa. Phil was still in "grade school" when I was a freshman but he used to come to school early and just sit and "look" at me-- guess he was moon struck. I have never forgotten him-- such a nice kid.

A personal story about Phil's efforts and generosity:
I was going to take my son on a road trip to two weekend Sox/O's games in Boston but couldn't get tickets, as expected. I called his office and explained my plans and my dilemma to an assistant. Basically, could he get me tickets, that I'd pay for? Not only was he able to get me tickets, he wouldn't let me pay and also provided some travel info so that we could find the O's for some additional "Bird Watching".
He had no idea who I was, short of being an O's fan, but left a fond and lasting memory for me and my son. Rest in Peace Phil.

STOP
That was NOT my posting earlier. It was ignorant and crude.
I promise you, I will do everything I can to have the device of the person who sent it flagged down. Yes, this is a threat to the ignorant piece of garbage who posted as my name under such a sensitive subject.
It may take a minute, but if the SUN doesn't help me, I have my own contacts who can get the job done.
To anyone thinking devices can't be found, you're wrong. Someone else offered that it could be done a few weeks ago, and I've since found out it's true. You will be found!
Pete's Blog has simply gotten ugly lately. People can love the O's and people can be angry at them (like me), but when people resort to the kind of things they've been doing lately, it just shows a sickness within.
My condolences to Mr. Itzoe's family. While I didn't know Phil, I have a friend who knew him very well and always spoke highly of him. RIP!

I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Itzoe socially a couple of times in the many, many years that I worked in downtown Baltimore. He was a true gentelman, the kind of person who was actually interested in what you were saying to him. My condolences go out to his family

Fyi,
It's already pretty obvious who posted as my name. I'll wait before I say anything though. It'll also be up to the SUN to if they'd like to contact this person directly, before I do. Just know that this person, under different names, will start to go on the defensive. Also know that this will be my last post under this subject, as I won't get in a battle with this person here, when post should be doing nothing but showing respect to Phil.

You've further extended my point - there should be a Log In name with a password. It won't end the trolling completely, but it might if only one person is allowed their own blog name.
To all,
It's not wayne who is ruining this blog, obviously. At the very least, he almost always keeps it to baseball or sports. It's the cretins who jam up the blog with incoherent personal attacks. And to those, seriously, grow up.

Yup, Mr. Itzoe was a good dude, one of many the Orioles had working for them during the glory years right up until today.
Those were the days when the Baltimore Orioles were the epitome of class and professionalism and Phil Itzoe fit right in.
Both my father and my uncle dealt with Mr. Itzoe on a daily basis, they were with the AP and I got a chance to meet Mr. Itzoe many times. The stories he told! He didn't spare anyone and the things he said, in a laughing way, about our heroes of the playing field, it was hilarious.
And wayne, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, but the cynicism and negativity you display on a regular basis, well, all I can say is, I hope it wasn't you.
Let's hope Mr. Itzoe's passing puts everything into perspective and we can get back to being a classy blog while still maintaining our points of view.

I will always know Phil as "Josh's Dad".
While I did not know Phil personally, I had the privilege of working with and becoming friends with his son Josh, who spoke of his dad often. I learned of many of Phil's accomplishments with the Os. But I believe Phil's greatest accomplishment was being a great father and example to his son. If Phil was anything like Josh, he had integrity, character, a strong work ethic and a gift of wanting to help others. Josh, my thoughts and prayers are with you, Jess and your family. Hang in there. How many traveling secretary 's get this kind of recognition on their passing? This in itself says everything about Phil Itzoe? Furthermore, how many people spend over 40 years in the same capacity with the same employer? While I never met Mr. Itzoe, I certainly new of his work and good name. May his legacy live on and he rest in peace.

Pete
Wayne is asking the Sun to help him identify whoever posted at Feb 10, 11:57 pm. While I realize that it wouldn't be something you'd want to make a habit of doing, given the sensitivity of the subject of this thread, I think you should help him out.
I don't know how savvy you are with computers, but if not, everything you receive has a source IP address. Your computer tech could see where the offending post originated, and with a simple yes or no answer, say whether it originated from the IP address that Wayne uses. Your guy could do that in a couple of minutes with little effort.
How about it, Wayne. Care to join me in asking Pete to do that. He most likely can't identify the individual specificly, but he likely can give a yes or no confirmation with your clearly expressed permission to do so. How about it.

I had the pleasure of working for the Orioles PR department part-time during three really good years: 1969 - 1971, while I was a sportswriter at the Sunpapers. The Orioles front office was the model every other franchise tried to copy. This was because of people like Phil Itzoe, Bob Brown and others. Front offices today have at least 10 - 12 people to do what these two men were doing virtually by themselves then. True professionals. True gentleman. Real class. RIP Phil. It's quite a testimonial that so many people remember you fondly; even those you only touched briefly.

freeman,
I am with you! The SUN can EASILY determine the exact 'real email' and device from any poster. I have asked the Sun for their help in the past, and I'm doing so again. I've also asked Pete to put some kind of security so that random names won't be allowed without being verified first.
I have already contacted the SUN, and I'm waiting for a response. I am also personally doing what I can in order to find the device and real identity of the person involved. If the Sun won't help me, I will spare no expense.
I don't care abot my 'baseball cred' when it comes to this blog. I do care however, when people take things too far. Love the O's, hate the O's, but don't do the kind of things that happen to me this morning.
While I said I wouldn't respond in this subject area anymore, I wanted to say thanks to those that know doing what the creep did above is something I'd never do. He WILL be found out though!
All that said, this Blog subject is about Mr. Itzoe. My friend who knew him told me a little bit more about him today. He's certainly the kind of person I wish I had gotten to know. I know my friend feels like a better person having known Phil. God Bless his family as they get through this tough period!

Wayne,
I'm the one who commented weeks ago that devices can be found. The person I was referring to at the time went away for a while, but has since come back the last couple weeks. You should go after this person, and if you don't have any luck, please say so and I'll help on my end.
Honestly, I don't know how you put up with people like HAL above who make things so personal. I checked out comments as far as I could go back HAL, and you are wrong. Wayne's comments are not similar at all.
Lastly, I think it's pretty easy to see who it likely was who pretended to be wayne. Wayne, look at the comments from last night around midnight. See who the people were, especially when someone used your name around that same time. Seems pretty obvious to me.
Still, finding out for sure, and finding where the device is, can possibly make things a little better around here.
Pete, wayne and others have reached out to you and the SUN for your help in this matter. Before today, it didn't matter as much, as there are jerks on every Blog. Today went over the line though, and you should help the guy out. Seems fair.
As for the subject of today, thanks Pete. Phil seemed to be one of those great unsung hero's that every organization can't do without. Here's hoping the Oriole family all come together to celebrate the life of this wonderful man.
Posted by: larry | February 11, 2010 7:12 PM
Phil was just a great guy who was loved buy rich athletes and temps alike. He had no ego and he always went out of his way to help anyone who needed it.
Phil represented everything that has ever been good about the Baltimore Orioles.
Jon w,
I have never seen Pete accuse Wayne of have multiple names. I for one don't believe he does. What I have seen is Pete make jokes that maybe he and Wayne were the same guy. Sometimes, I think they are.
Wayne, I too believe you. It really is wrong that someone has gotten a big laugh at your expense today. It's also wrong that so many fell for this trick earlier today.
Pete, you have to do something about the guys who are ruining your Blog. I actually have fun seeing people go at it from both sides. There are many, like Not Brooks, Doug, Gil, Ken, Wayne, Chris In Hawaii, and others who go at it from their own points of view. It's just not so easy with others, and it seems very evident that many are using multiple names in order to prove their point. It really is worrisome on many levels.
Posted by: bob | February 11, 2010 7:42 PM
I very confused at this point.
This was a post to honor a fantastic individual who worked tirelessly for the Orioles organization in Mr. Phil Itzoe.
Wayne's comments were inappropriate. No question or debate about it.
But aren't these comments moderated before they are posted? The real question is why were they allowed through. They should have never been approved.
It's sad to see a post that was made to honor a man who made so many positive contributions, be turned into a discussion on Andy MacPhail.
RIP

Jergs,
I believe it's been well documented that those comments were not from Wayne.
Instead of even talking about it, why don't you practice what you preach above and take the time to honor a great man in Phil Itzoe.

God bless you Phil and your family! It does appear that Phils last act may have been his greatest in shutting up Wayne!

Yet another very inappropriate comment under another name attempting to disparage Wayne.
Warehouser, you are likely the imposter yourself and I hope Wayne or the SUN reveals your real name and information.
Posted by: doug | February 11, 2010 9:17 PM
Warehousers and Realists - cut the crap. It's one thing to argue about an organization and discuss its members as an 'individual.' It's another to transfer anger at the entity to the real people within it.
RIP Phil. Your service was appreciated and admired. Thank you.

Wayne and his pretenders all need to go away. They have ruined the blog section of The Schmuck Stops Here for me and many, many others.
An IP address means nothing, people. It changes when a PC moves from place to place. A single public IP can be shared by hundreds of people in a single company. ISP's change client IP's all the time, and don't often keep a record. Even if "Wayne" and/or his impostors always used the exact same machine, with the exact same IP address mapping, the ISP that hosts the IP is not going to give up the address to some lame-o admin at The Sun, all in an effort to rectify someone's hurt feelings.
I.T. is not magic, people. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean that it is. It's real work, done by understaffed, over-worked departments of professionals. No one has the time to hunt down and map IP addresses, DHCP leases, and address translations to see if some MORON is imitating some A-HOLE we should all be ignoring to start with.
Sorry for the rant, Pete. I'm just sick of Wayne, and those who supposedly impersonate him.

Ferg,
You define classless. To rant against wayne in this subject area show your true colors. Wayne is negative, and people can like him or not. You though are simply a disgusting person you needs leave the blog. In fact take all your other names with you.
Pete, thanks for the Blog subject. Love wayne or hate him, he never displaysthe kind of junk this so called Ferg just displayed. There are ways to make the blog beter Pete. See the comment from Not Brooks above.
SOme of us know who this Ferg guy is and he's wrong about finding address. You want to play Ferg? I will team up with wayne and anyone who wants to expose ignorant people like yourself. It's time someone finds out where you and all your alias's live. And I'm being serious. You've disrespected people long enough.

I AM A BIT CONFOUNDED AS TO THE REASON ANYONE WOULD WANT THE ORIOLE TEAM TO FILL IT'S "O".
THE "O" HAS ALWAYS BEEN A HOLLOW LETTER CONSISTING OF A 360 DEGREE ARC WITH NOTHING INSIDE IT. WE FANS LOVE CALLING THE ORIOLES THE "O'S" FOR SHORT.
WHY IF THEY FILLED IT IN, IT WOULD LOOK MORE LIKE A HOLE THAN A LETTER OF THE ALPHABET.
i JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHERE SOME OF THESE CRAZY IDEAS ORIGINATE.
(oh..... you say it not "fill it's O" but rather "PHIL ITZOE".... ???)
oh, that's different.
NEVER MIND.
Rest in peace, Mr. Itzoe.

Pete,It is definitely a sad day and my condolencesgo out to the Itzoe family and the Orioles is they will be hard pressed to find anyone to replace him.As far as Wayne goes,I have never read anything he's writen that would make me even think he posted that comment.Yes he hats the current state of the Orioles,as do I,and the actions of the offseason to me seem to have created more question marks than answers.Yes,it's a little exciting to know spring training is coming, but I for one do not see any indication of us finishing at.500,much less contending in the next two years.Hopefully I'm wrong, and rest in peace Mr.Itzoe, truly a class act in all respects.I said several months ago I would limit my post after an attack on my myself by a coward, who didn't even have his facts straight, but this one deserved a post.So go for it Wayne, unmask the imposter. And once again to the Itzoe family and to Phil's co-workers,and even writers like Pete,my condolences, the job he did will be missed, butthe man he was will be missed even more.

I will proceed assuming that you think you are talking to someone else. I am *not* some imposter. I've posted on these blogs as "Ferg" for a very long time, and have never used another name. I have an account on the forums as "Ferg Deluxe", and my first account on the forums way way back in the day was simply "Ferg". This is back in the days of 1998 and 1999, the days of "Phillysoc" and "OBird" and their knock-down drag-outs about who was the better 3B, Brooksie or Mike Schmidt.
I submit to you that I've been posting on the website of the Sun for longer than 99% of the people here. I'm sure there are some veterans from then who have been here longer.
How my post above was "classless" is beyond me. As a long time IT professional I stand by my assertion that an ISP is not going to disclose private information about one of their subscribers (whether it's me, or Wayne, or whomever it is you think I am) to settle a petty internet feud.
Love,
Ferg

Similar to O's Fan 4 Life, I had the need to call on Mr. Itzoe when the Oriole's played at Fenway. Tickets were impossible to buy because the park is so small and scalping is almost legal. Phil suggested I call him in Boston when I arrived. Can you imagine a traveling secretary telling a fan where the team hotel was? Upon arrival I called Phil and he told me the tickets would be at the Will Call window at Fenway Park. A man of honor. What an extraordinary gentleman. I hope the Orioles again recognize his contributions at the beginning of or during the 2010 season. My condolences to the Itzoe family.

Sadly I just learned of Phils death yesterday. I just cried and cried as he was such a wonderful soul and although I hadn't communicated with him for six years I thought of him often!! I knew Phil through the years I worked in the hotel business out her in Anaheim. I had the joy of working with all the American league teams and it was always a treat seeing Phil those 6/7 days a year when team was in town. Knew Josh since he was 7ish and travelled with Phil and then he played ball out here later. How much he lived and so proud of Josh!!!! Was so happywhen Phil remarried and a glorious time with his daughter MarieLisa! Phil Itzoe thank you!!! You were a major player in my career and a friend!! You had the respect of so many and define class!!!
