MASN update
MASN officials still aren't saying a lot about the final makeup of the television crew for this season, but I'm hearing that Gary Thorne recently agreed to a new four-year contract, which dovetails with the five-year deal that Jim Palmer signed before last season.
No work on the replacement for Buck Martinez, but I'm still guessing it will turn out to be Mike Flanagan. That's been my feeling all along, but the Orioles have been talking to several other candidates. They could even go with a rotation of several guest color analysts, but there are some possible drawbacks to a plan like that. The guest commentators are less likely to be as immersed in the day-to-day drama of the club and also could have a tougher time developing good chemistry in the broadcast booth.
Guess we'll know soon enough, but I think the Orioles have a bad habit of leaving these things hanging way too long.

Hey Pete has there ever been a mention of Bill Ripken being the color man, He has a great Knowledge of Baseball and seems to me would make a lot of sense.
Posted by: CAL | February 18, 2010 3:24 PM
I'm really glad about Thorne and Palmer. I think those two make up a really good team and I am glad they will be here for at least four more years.

Pete,
I'll be interested to know how much MASNs revenue will jump with the National's addition of Chen-Ming Wang and the baseball crazy Taiwan market. 23 million baseball crazed people should bring in some serious cash. Will the Orioles be entitled to some of it?
I know that was an off the wall question. Part of me was hoping the birds picked up Wang just to tap into that market for revenue reasons.

Mr. Schmuck,
Why on earth is MASN carrying only 4 pre season games? Wouldn't it make sense to give our budding young stars more exposure and give the local fans previews of Bell, Snyder and others? I hope it isn't a budgetary issue with Mr. Angelos. If it is, he is being penny wise and pound foolish in my opinion.
Do you have any idea why so few pre season games are on the TV schedule?

Denny-
The Taiwanese have better things to do with their time than watch a broken down pitcher.

Peter,
I wonder why Cal is never considered for these things? Personally I think the greatest would be Cal. Maybe he has a lot of other responsibilities elsewhere, which might work against him having an incentive to do so, but I think his presence in the booth would draw a lot of fans back in itself. Speaking for myself, who watches often anyways, but if I knew Cal would be giving commentary, it makes me want to see every single inning.
Also, I think there has been a major trust-deficit that has been created around everything Oriole the last decade, because we've seen unfortunate commentators end up being perceived as mouthpieces for mismanaged regimes. I don't think Cal would suffer any such liability. On the other hand Flanny would be an entirely different matter, since he literally was the old regime. No disrespect to Flanagan and his accomplishments but doesn't that create an awkward conflict of interests that he ends up taking on a very visible public role, which can be described as commentator (critic) of his replacement?

Hey someone mentioned Billy Rip. I would agree with that too. He would make a great color guy.
Posted by: Eddie in NYC | February 18, 2010 4:14 PM
Great point Eddie and your 100% right Cal Ripken would be great but from what I see he does have his hands in alot of other other things. Thats why I think the next best thing would be baby bro Billy. Great baseball knowledge and no ill feeling can ever be put on the Ripken family. Makes alot of sense to me to try and make Bill that offer if he would be interested that is, cause he too has his hands in alot of other things business and Baseball wise these days.

Shamrock,
I beg to differ. I was in Taiwan this December and saw Yankee hat after Yankee hat. They love major league baseball.
Posted by: Denny | February 18, 2010 4:32 PM
Please get MASN involved in making Time Warner cable in North Carolina carry the O's. Two rulings already have gone against TW in court. There are alot of O's fans that would love to see them THIS season
Posted by: Jeff Ellis | February 18, 2010 4:32 PM
Why don't they just replace Martinez with a chalkboard? Same voice and same insight.
Posted by: Doug | February 18, 2010 4:40 PM
Yes, the Taiwanese do love major league baseball. So why would they want to watch the Nationals? (Rimshot!)
As for announcers, I'd love to get more of Dave Johnson. The only one I really dread is Rick Dempsey.

I live in Rochester so I have to listen to that tool Michael Kay all the time with the YES network. Anywho, Ken Singleton is likely the best color commentator I have heard around the majors. With his connection to Baltimore, what are the chances we can get him?
Posted by: RV | February 18, 2010 5:07 PM
Why dont we get Pete... With all his filler posts you know hes good for 3 hours of BS every game!!
Posted by: Anonymous | February 18, 2010 5:48 PM
Why dont we get Anonymous (Wayne) if we want to hear the same boring BS for 3 hours a night!!!
Posted by: Kramer | February 18, 2010 5:50 PM
How could MASN afford all Anonymous`s (Wayne) alter egos??? (multiple post indentities)
Wayne a leopard cant change his spots and a boorish predictable complainer cant hide his negativity!!
everyone knows its you , your not fooling anyone
Posted by: Retread | February 18, 2010 5:56 PM
WEAK VERY WEAK "Old Anonymous Wayne" LMAO, dude is so weak he bashes Pete? Getting pretty old bro, like i said in about four posts back take the same line of BS to a Yankees Blog, you two jokes deserve each other.
Posted by: CAL | February 18, 2010 5:56 PM
How about Jim Palmer if he is indeed interested in a full time gig!! I have heard he is really busy with other things in his life but his insight to the game is off the charts!
Posted by: Wayne | February 18, 2010 6:04 PM
Cal..that wasnt my post you were referring to in the Bergesson or first day blog.
I guess anyone can be imitated..lol
PS I dont post negative comments about anything Orioles , so that way you will know at least when it is actually me
Posted by: Wayne | February 18, 2010 6:12 PM
Thorne and Palmer are a solid team....get Flanny back, too!
But Mike, be yourself, let it all hang out! You are a funny man--don't hold back. "One day it's Cy Young, next day Sayonara."
Posted by: John from Kensington | February 18, 2010 6:47 PM
Never understood the hating on Thorne.
And yeah, like other have said, I'd support Billy, he's pretty good on air.
Posted by: Sam | February 18, 2010 6:54 PM
I do not like Thorne, especially when all that stuff happened with Schilling. It just shows he likes to talk about nothing. I think Palmer does an excellent job and would like for him to do it full time. What happened to Lowenstein and Mike Reghi? They were a great duo. What would be wrong with Tom Davis doing the games?
Posted by: Michael | February 18, 2010 7:12 PM
If Flanny gets the gig, I'll just fire up the chain saw and turn the sound down. Same result. I wish it was Billy Rip but he's too opinionated for the O's brass. Kinda like Palmer used to be before he watered it down.
Posted by: Bob F. | February 18, 2010 7:26 PM
Now if MASN would just stop being so cheap and televise a number of spring games. No doubt the four they're doing piggyback off of YES and NESN.
Spring training games where you see the young players are among the most interesting. Its a real shame we get so few.

Gary Thorne in my side is absolutely awful.I turn off the tv and listen to the radio. He averages about 8-10 mistakes a night.I hope they put somebody more charismatic to team up with him.I agree Billy or Dave Johnson would be good choices.Man I miss the days of Mel Proctor and Bro.Low,they can make a boring game worth watching just to listen to the two of them.Flanny will be the pick because the last thing the Orioles want issomeone besides Palmer telling it like it really is.Flanagan will toe the company line so he can keep getting paid.
Posted by: Burt from Essex | February 18, 2010 7:44 PM
Gary Thorn is a moron. i cant stand to listen to him. he doesn't know anything about baseball.
Posted by: Will | February 18, 2010 8:16 PM
Four more years of Palmer? Isn't there a statute of limitations on Earl Weaver stories? Maybe this year, we'll hear something new...like, how Robin Roberts was Palmer's first big league roommate...What? He said that already?
Posted by: Chris Joseph | February 18, 2010 8:27 PM
2nd BurtinEssex...Does anyone actually "listen" to Thirne and all the errors he commits per game/season. I love it when is doing other gigs. 4 more years and to think you had Jon Miller. Ha!
Posted by: Randy in SC | February 18, 2010 9:31 PM
Pete, you should have a caption contest on some of the pics this yearstarting with the Tremblay/Weiters pic:
Tremblay: We're gonna get em this year Matty my boy!
Wieters: Stand up when you talk to me skip...oh wait.
Posted by: cush | February 18, 2010 9:32 PM
Pete,
I contacted MASN several months ago asking them to please not hire Flanagan. In my opinion he was awful the first time around and I doubt he will be any better now. He is so boring. Why won't the organization just get rid of him. He cannot broadcast and he was a disaster as the "GM".
Bring back Brother LO!!!!
Posted by: Mike | February 18, 2010 9:39 PM
The wayne impostors simply won't go away. It's amazing!
As for MASN criteria's.....
1) Shill
2) Oriole Shill
3) Angelos Shill
4) MacPhail Shill
In fact, many on these blogs should apply......

I am so sad that Gary is going to be back for 4 more years. I get sick of listening to him cheer for the other team more than the O's
Posted by: will a | February 18, 2010 10:07 PM
I probably won't watch some games if Flanagan is working. He's too much a homer for me. That strategy got him a good job for many years with Angelos's Orioles. Good for him, bad for fans.
Posted by: George | February 18, 2010 10:43 PM
hey pete have you ever posted something without making an error? the backspace too far from the rest of the keys for ya?
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: As my former schoolmate Kevin Costner said in Tin Cup, perfection is unattainable.
Posted by: mike s | February 18, 2010 10:59 PM
I think Kevin Millar and Jeff Conine would be a good color guys
Posted by: Boomer | February 18, 2010 11:51 PM
Flanny is the play by play equivalent of watching paint dry, but I'd like to hear some stories about his time in the front office
Posted by: Anonymous | February 19, 2010 10:25 AM
The Ripken boys? No can do. Bill would need a 15 second time delay with his potty mouth and he is way too opinionated for O's management. Cal is too busy and they both would need to take a huge paycut if it was a full-time gig. Little league baseball $$$ been berry-berry good to the Ripken boys.
Posted by: Rob K. | February 19, 2010 11:15 AM
t'aint ken singleton available? wasn't he the color man for either the jays or the red sox?
.............................................................................................
Pete's reply: Yankees, and he's not available.
Posted by: ravensfan21218 | February 19, 2010 4:42 PM
Why dont we get AM, he aint doing anything the last 3 months or for the next 9 months!!
Posted by: Anonymous in honor of wayne | February 19, 2010 7:41 PM
If thats the case lets just hire the Yankee announcers as the Os will always suck but we could have great announcers...
now Pete that would be a good "filler" topic to stash in your back pocket on a day when you feel like mailing it in!

Well if they're looking for an apples-for-apples replacement for Buck Martinez, I have this old grinder motor in my garage with badly worn bearings.
Just turn it on between plays and everyone will think Buck changed his mind and stayed.

I get my O's news from Schmuck and play by play from Joe Angel. Who cares about MASN?
