Radio update: Joe Angel's back

The Orioles never seem to be in a hurry to get their broadcast talent under contract, which explains why the the radio play-by-play team has been in limbo for the entire winter. Now, it appears, the situation is getting resolved.

Just talked to Joe Angel on the phone and he confirmed that he will be back for the 2010 season. I'm hearing Fred Manfra will be back, too, but haven't been able to get hold of him and the Orioles have yet to make an official announcement.

"This is where I want to be,'' Angel said in a quick telephone interview. "I've left Baltimore twice and come back twice, so this obviously is where I want to be. I'm ready to go."

During the past month, Angel was under consideration for a similar role with the Los Angeles Angels, who are searching for a replacement for Rory Markas, who died suddenly of a heart attack in early January.

If Joe Angel WASN'T back, I would be highly pissed.

That guy is pure gold.

Angel has a great voice and calls a good game, but he can get a little weird at times.

I am not a Manfra Yoda fan. "Fly out in the 4th did Roberts!"

"Do or do not... there is not try!"

When the O's are dogging it, Joe is always on the top of his game, keeping us laughing and maintaining that old fashion radio fun. Glad he's back!

Glad to hear it. The O's have had some terrific announcers through the years. It took me a bit to get used to Joe's sense of humor when he first took over, but I have grown to enjoy the way he calls a game. Sure, some of his jokes fall flat, but he manages to make even Orioles games entertaining to listen to, and for quite a few years now, that's been no easy job.

Great news, I love Joe Angels' style and willingness to call out players and the team.

Fred Manfra is a good sidekick for Joe, handles the flood of commercials they put in their broadcasts so Joe can focus more on the game.

Fred is lame for the fan being a company man, no criticism, no insight (that he is willing to share unless it is wholly positive), but he is diligent reading commercials.

Gold, Jerry. Gold.

Without Joe's blunt commentary and awful puns, listening to the Orioles play would be a lot like watching them
play: very frustrating. Now, who replaces Buck Martinez? Brady Anderson? Dennis Miller? George Stephanopolis? Peter Schmuck? The world awaits an answer!

I missed Joe Angel and Jon Miller doing O's games together back in the day. They kept me on the radio and in stitches. I'm glad the O's have the common sense to keep Joe Angel on the airwaves here. If not, I wouldn't be happy.

Now if the O's can only finish above .500 this year....

Jason C in Florida gets to do the color on an Oriole game.......

{"Growling with Anger...}

If Tejada had gotten off his lazy f**king a** and actually hustled down the left field line, rather than just scratching his stinking crotch, he might have caught the f**king ball and gotten these hopeless bast**ds out of the inning" What a sorry bunch of losers." Good night Jim, that's it from here.

NO ONE is in Jon Miller's league.

that said, Angel is a solid announcer, and kinda funny (i am still using 2 jokes he made in a blowout game, couple years ago). I wish Jimmy Hunter could be his partner. Jim is a GREAT radio man; a little too silly on the TV side.

J, it's just not that funny anymore

So glad to hear Angel's back. That guy is hilarious.

I think Angel is too over-the-top. He tries too hard to be the class clown. He's not a natural like Jon Miller.

I'm more worried about TV. If they bring the walking Xanax Flanigan back, I may have to turn the sound down. Here's hoping Palmer is available more this year.

I sill say make sure the 7 second delay dump button is handy and let Billy Rip do it.

Glad to hear Angel is back, he's certainly the best thing we've had since Miller left. I enjoy listening to him.

Manfra, not so much. He's decent at explaining what happened after the fact, but I'd prefer someone who can tell me what's happening *as it's happening.* I pretty much rely on crowd noise when Manfra is doing PBP.

Another year of Fred "Wait until the play's over so I can edit my original call" Manfra? What did we do to deserve this?

Duke of York - EXACTLY.

I'm glad Joe Angel is back although when I read Peter's headline, I thought maybe he had hurt himself or had hair removal from his anatomy.

There must be better choices than Fred Manfra but I suppose waiting until now to find one isn't the best course of action. If he would cut his prattle by 50% he'd be 100% better.

Joe Angel is just as good as Jon Miller is.
Quit trying to make Miller some kind of audio god.
After Angel has been here to stay for awhile, he will become just as storied as Miller became and will have earned the same recognition as Miller now has.
We are fortunate to have had them both.

Enjoy Joe Angel for the most part. One pet peeve: wish he would stop calling a ground-rule double an "automatic double". It isn't a baseball term and is as irritating to hear as the "fair pole".

I like Joe Angel,I endure Fred Manfra, but for anybody to say that Joe is as good as Jon Miller is either related or delusional or both.On the TV side Gary Thorne has a great voice but makes 5-10 mistakes each and every game, and to the Jim Palmer basher,I'm pretty sure rehab stats don't count, after all, they had several Orioles players leading off every inning to get some at bats in.Wish I could recall the specifics but I know I am right on that one.

Manfra is a cheeseball better suited for veg-o-matic commercials.
Angel, yes.. but manfra should have been gone years ago.

Hey Duke of York, if you take a radio to the park with you it is absolutely hilarious to see how long it takes Fred Manra to figure out what happened and relay it to the audience. Last year the Orioles were already throwing the ball around the infield after Mora speared a line drive when Manfra announced that Mora had come up with the play.

Get Miller back at any cost. And by the way...Automatic doubles and ground-rule doubles ARE two different things. a ball that bounces off the warning track and over the wall is an automatice double....same rule in every ballbark. A ground-rule double is a park-unique rule, i.e. a ball gets stuck in a garage door or something like that.

Why did term "automatic double" ever start, a few years ago? Unecessary.

"Multiple RBI" still bugs me, too. First 100 years of baseball, it was "2 RBIs," plural. NOT 2 RBI. I get it, already.

WHAT'S ALL THIS FUSS ABOUT JOE ANGEL'S BACK ???
BRIAN ROBERTS IS THE ONE WHOSE BACK WE HAVE TO BE WORRIED ABOUT !!!
jOE ANGEL CAN CALL A GAME JUST FINE EVEN WITH A BAD BACK !

(oh... you meant Joe Angel IS back... )

NEVER MIND.

Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
