News item update

Just a little housekeeping note here, but if you've noticed that I have not published a "News item" column in a couple of weeks, don't be alarmed. Because I'm at spring training covering the Orioles pretty much exclusively, I'm going to concentrate on the O's in my column for the next few weeks, but the "News item" columns will resume either at the end of spring training or when I get my sense of humor back -- whichever comes first.

In the meantime, I'll try to pop a random "News item" and "My take" in here once in awhile. Here's one now:

News item: The U.S. bobsled team won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics for the first time in 62 years.

My take: I hope one of the guys got to shout "I'm going to Disneyland," since that's where a lot of Americans got their first taste of what it might be like to ride in a bobsled. Still remember my first time on the Matterhorn. I never missed bobsledding on ABC's Wide World of Sports after that, and I still miss Jim McKay, God rest his soul.

I don't know if I speak for many others (but I have a sneaky suspicion that I do). I used to read the Sun religiously and have gradually over the years been forced to go to other sources for the news coverage I want. But I still check every day to see if there has been a new "News Item" posting. Hate to put the burden of an entire newspaper, hundreds of jobs, and the credibility of a proud-but-weakened city on your shoulders, but......please find it within your creative, knowledgable and plentiful realm to give us a column or two each week.....or every day!

Ditto David Berman. Too few people have senses of humor anymore, and (God forgive me for giving you any reason for a bigger head) yours is priceless.

I thought I was the only one flipping through the sports page three times this weekend looking for that feature. :)

Pete - when spring training winds down why don't you do a special "News Item" column of your favorite moments from your time down there?? You can sprinkle in a few about the O's too. haha.....

Orioles - Orioles - Orioles

I've been checking online to see if I somehow missed your "News Item" column the last couple of weeks. I'm glad it will be back after spring training. Enjoy Florida!

Given the budget cuts that the Sun has done to the Sports Department. I am shocked that they are allowing you to travel to Floria and not making you depend on wire reports.

About Peter Schmuck
Peter Schmuck wants you to know that, contrary to popular belief, he is more than just a bon vivant, raconteur and collector of blousy flowered shirts. He is a semi-respected journalist who has covered virtually every sport -- except luge, of course – and tackled issues that transcend the mere games people play. If that isn’t enough to qualify him to provide witty, wide-ranging commentary on the sports world ... and the rest of the world, for that matter ... he is an avid reader of history, biography and the classics, as well as a charming blowhard who pops off on both sports and politics on WBAL Radio. That means you can expect a little of everything in The Schmuck Stops Here, but the major focus will be keeping you up to the minute on Baltimore’s major sports teams and themes, whether it’s throwing up the Orioles lineup the minute it’s announced or updating you on the latest sprained ankle in Owings Mills. Oh, and by the way, that’s Mr. Schmuck to you.
